Golf course operator goes bust A big question mark hangs over the future of Hooton Golf Club after the private operator went bust. Mack Golf, had been running the Little Sutton club on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council, which owns the course. But in early October Mack Golf ceased trading with immediate effect which forced the closure of the course. Cllr Louise Gittins said: “We are waiting to hear from the receivers that have been appointed to act on their behalf and currently the golf courses have been closed. “This is very disappointing news and we are now looking at options for the future running of the courses.”

MP blasts walk-in centre closure Ellesmere Port & Neston MP, Justin Madders has condemned a proposal by Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to close walk-in centres, just months after the Eastham facility reopened following a public outcry. A fifth of patients using the popular facility in Eastham are from the Cheshire side of the border and would face a much longer journey to the Countess of Chester or Arrowe Park if they wish to access walk-in facilities in future. The CCG is proposing to close walk-ins at Eastham Clinic, Victoria Central Wallasey, Miriam Medical Centre in Birkenhead, Parkfield Medical Centre in New Ferry and Moreton Health Clinic. The only walk-in facility on the Wirral will be at a new Urgent Treatment Centre at the Arrowe Park site, which NHS England is requiring the CCG to open by December 2019. A consultation has been launched by the CCG, but keeping the walk-in centres open is not one of the options being looked at, despite being extremely well regarded by the public with 93.6% of patients saying that they would recommend them to their family and friends. Mr Madders, also a Shadow Health Minister has branded the consultation as “fundamentally flawed” and argues that the closures will lead to huge problems at local A&E departments. According to the CCG’s own figures, 46.3% of those who attended WICs or Minor Injuries Units did so because they were unable to get a GP appointment. The CCG has also stated that, “a recurring theme across multiple Wirral surveys and reviews was patients reporting attending A&E because they could not get an urgent GP appointment.” In 2016/17, this equates to 38,415 attendances at walk-in centres, which could potentially have presented at A&E instead.

Commemorating centenary of World War One Little Sutton Methodist Church, on Chester Road, Little Sutton, will be commemorating the end of World War One with events from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th November. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Sutton man charged with threats to kill A 23-year-old man has been charged with making threats to kill and being drunk and disorderly in a public place following an incident in Chester. Police were providing emergency first aid treatment to a man on Watergate Street when one was threatened by another man. Michael Stephens, of West Park Drive, Great Sutton, was subsequently arrested and charged.

Accused of growing cannabis A man has been charged following the discovery of a large quantity of cannabis plants at a house in Exeter Road, Ellesmere Port. It is alleged that police found more than 300 cannabis plants inside the house and arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of being concerned in the production of a controlled drug of class B. Colours before winter N

ovember is an in between month between autumn and winter but often has late colour from leaves and berries.

I love Acers and there are many that will suit small gardens. Their requirement is for a sheltered site, not in an exposed windswept location. They also need a moisture retentive and free draining soil so heavy clay will never suit them. They often grow under the canopy of taller trees and like semi shade or sun. Acer palmatum Bloodgood or Fireglow have purple leaves that turn red in autumn. Another variety with pale green leaves is Katsura and they turn orange and red in autumn. Eventually these trees can reach 4m tall but it takes time! You can grow them in pots too and brighten up darker spaces but remember to repot every few years. Colour from tree leaves comes from Malus or Crab Apples, oak trees and cherry trees. Another good plant for autumn, that is not often seen is Chinese Lanterns or Physalis alketengi franchetii. This is a perennial that gradually spreads and has boring green leaves until autumn when the orange lantern pods shine out. This plant likes any moist and well drained soil in semi shade or sunny spot and will gradually increase. Fun for Halloween decorations. Berries can be found on the easy to grow Pyracantha which have long needle like spines but have white flowers then the red, yellow or orange berries in autumn and winter. They will grow on any soil and in any situation including exposed positions. Cotoneasters are also great especially for bees as many flower in early spring but they save the best show for autumn and winter with red berries. Cotoneaster dammeri is a prostrate shrub (to 12ins high) that will drape over walls. Or for a larger shrub that can be pruned to size, try Cotoneaster lacteus. Both will grow in sun or light shade and just need well drained soil to do well. Many cotoneasters are evergreen too. Work to do in the garden is mainly tidying up flowering shrubs by pruning to shape once the leaves have fallen off so you can see the framework. Cut out long or crossing stems to negate the plant. Finish moving and splitting perennials before the frosts start. Also complete planting tulips and other spring flowering bulbs.
