Hoole Christmas lights countdown Local residents and local businesses have come together to ensure the annual Hoole Christmas Lights switch on for 2018 is a roaring success. The Christmas lights switch on is set for Saturday 24th November and plans are progressing well for the annual event, which is a firm fixture in local calendars. This year’s switch on will see a return to the original format - a family focused celebration in the centre of Hoole. Plans for the evening include Christmas craft activities for children and families, mulled wine and festive food at the Community Centre. Father Christmas is also expected to make an appearance! Other entertainment will take place along Charles St and Faulkner St, both before and after the switch on.

12 Tel 01244 350398

Commenting on the plans, chairwoman of the community group, Linda Hobbs, said: “It’s fantastic to see so much interest from local people, businesses and organisations in the Hoole community. The support we’ve received so far has been overwhelming. We’re working to take the Christmas lights switch on back to its roots and support the original aim of a fun and family friendly event in the heart of the community.” The Hoole Christmas Lights community group meets at the Community Centre at 7pm each Wednesday. Membership is open to all residents, churches, businesses, organisations and interest groups in the local area, so if you’d like to get involved, please contact hoolechristmaslights@outlook.com or come along to the next meeting.

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

Parents told to stay off the zig zags Parents of children at Hoole Primary School have been warned to keep their cars off the zig zag lines on Hoole Lane. PCSO Keith Bartlett says parents have failed to heed his warnings – so now he will start to dish out £100 fines and 3 points on the licence. The problems arise on the school run, when parents drop off or pick their children up. A number of parents have parked up illegally on the zig zag lines – which are there as a safety measure. PCSO Bartlett said: “I’ve been politely asking people not to park there, giving people the chance to move their cars but the problem persists so now we’re adopting a zero tolerance policy. “The lines are there for a reason – so that the children can cross safely – so the people who park there are putting the pupils at risk.” He also noted that photographic evidence can be submitted and used as evidence – so even if PCSO Bartlett isn’t there, drivers can still be prosecuted.

Thieves use the back alleys HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned to watch out for people loitering in alleyways around the back of terraced houses in Hoole. In recent weeks there have been break-ins at homes in Hamilton Street and Burgess Street where the burglars have got in round the back. An attempted break-in on Hewitt Street was thwarted when the thief was challenged by a neighbour. It is believed that the thieves are pretending to be tradesmen looking for work but, as PCSO Keith Bartlett says, bona fide sales people would use the front door. He says: “They have been going round the back alley and then, when challenged, saying they are looking for work. In the recent burglaries, they’ve smashed the glass in the door to get in. “If you see someone suspicious in the alleyways, don’t hesitate to call us on the nonemergency number (101). It’s better that we can check them out.”

Beer and wine shop moves out of Hoole One of the best-known businesses in Hoole is packing up and moving to Handbridge. Chester Beer and Wine is moving from its premises in Charles Street after 13 successful years. The independent store has been run by Sam Jackson, with help from Sue Mason and Dave Calver, expertly selling a huge range beers, wines and spirits – many locally sourced. But they are moving out following a change of landlord – and now they are seeking funding help for the move. Owner Sam says: “Just after the success of our second beer festival in August we received the devastating news that our beloved shop would have to close. A new landlord had designs on the building which didn’t include us, and we would have to find a new home. After 13 years of hard work building a successful business in the heart of the Hoole community, we were given just a matter of weeks to find new premises. “We didn’t want to go down without a fight, so the race was on to find somewhere suitable. We struck gold straight away, with a fantastic vacant premise in the beautiful, historic suburb of Handbridge, on the banks of the River Dee. “Chester Beer & Wine has been part of my life for so many years, and I have put heart and soul into it, along with Sue & Dave, who love the shop as much as I do. I am determined to make our new venue a success, not just for my own sake (and the life savings I invested!), but also for Sue & Dave, who

are the best employees in the world. We are so excited about the new premises and our move to Handbridge. We are hoping that it won’t be goodbye to all our lovely customers, we are only across the river after all, and we are looking forward to meeting lots of lovely new customers and forging new friendships. “So, things are looking peachy you may think – why do we need help from all you lovely people?? Well, the honest truth is that a shop move is expensive, I mean, really crazy expensive. We have such a mountain to climb guys – the sheer scale of moving 13 years’ worth of stock and memories is a huge task in itself, but the biggest burden is a financial one. Dear friends we have to find capital to pay for, among other things, removal men, new fridges, cabinets, shutters, furniture, signage, solicitor’s fees, surveyor fees, license application, decorating, joiners & a plethora of other skilled tradesmen to make our new shop look gorgeous. “You have all been so amazing over so many years and I have loved seeing you all go through your life’s journey. I have watched over you all as you have lived your lives, met your life partners, had little ones who have grown and flown, and have felt privileged to have listened when times haven’t been so kind to you. “Well life hasn’t been so kind to us lately and now we need your help. We are hoping to raise £20k to cover our moving costs and make our shop as wonderful as it has been in Hoole. Please give or buy what you feel you can, every penny is appreciated more than you can imagine. Everyone who donates will be invited to a reopening party.” A Gofundme page has been set up to raise money for the move. Left: owner Sam Jackson at the Handbridge shop Top: the Hoole premises

World War One centenary commemorated in Hoole A Chester-wide ceremony will take place at Chester Cathedral, as is customary, at 11am on 11th November. From 2.45pm on Sunday 11th November 2018 all are welcome to gather at the War Memorial, when Hoole and Newton propose to gather for a local Service of Remembrance and to mark the centenary of the Armistice. The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Alex Black, wishes to be able to attend. Then, at 3pm there will be a short Service of Remembrance, followed by a joint service at All Saints’ Church. Detailed planning is underway, and arrangements and an Order of Service will be available in September. It is hoped that it will be possible, given the likelihood of larger numbers in attendance, to process from the War Memorial to All Saints’ Church. It is also hoped that the schools will take part in the joint service. Refreshments will be served at the end of the service. The occasion is being supported by local councillors for Hoole and Newton and by the Flookersbrook Trust.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Colours before winter N

ovember is an in between month between autumn and winter but often has late colour from leaves and berries.

I love Acers and there are many that will suit small gardens. Their requirement is for a sheltered site, not in an exposed windswept location. They also need a moisture retentive and free draining soil so heavy clay will never suit them. They often grow under the canopy of taller trees and like semi shade or sun. Acer palmatum Bloodgood or Fireglow have purple leaves that turn red in autumn. Another variety with pale green leaves is Katsura and they turn orange and red in autumn. Eventually these trees can reach 4m tall but it takes time! You can grow them in pots too and brighten up darker spaces but remember to repot every few years. Colour from tree leaves comes from Malus or Crab Apples, oak trees and cherry trees. Another good plant for autumn, that is not often seen is Chinese Lanterns or Physalis alketengi franchetii. This is a perennial that gradually spreads and has boring green leaves until autumn when the orange lantern pods shine out. This plant likes any moist and well drained soil in semi shade or sunny spot and will gradually increase. Fun for Halloween decorations. Berries can be found on the easy to grow Pyracantha which have long needle like spines but have white flowers then the red, yellow or orange berries in autumn and winter. They will grow on any soil and in any situation including exposed positions. Cotoneasters are also great especially for bees as many flower in early spring but they save the best show for autumn and winter with red berries. Cotoneaster dammeri is a prostrate shrub (to 12ins high) that will drape over walls. Or for a larger shrub that can be pruned to size, try Cotoneaster lacteus. Both will grow in sun or light shade and just need well drained soil to do well. Many cotoneasters are evergreen too. Work to do in the garden is mainly tidying up flowering shrubs by pruning to shape once the leaves have fallen off so you can see the framework. Cut out long or crossing stems to negate the plant. Finish moving and splitting perennials before the frosts start. Also complete planting tulips and other spring flowering bulbs.

Many motorists caught on Hoole camera The Hoole Road speed camera continues to catch out speeding drivers. Between January 2016 and May 2018, the camera caught 8,718 speeders. The camera is so effective because drivers coming round the corner from Hoole Roundabout don’t see it until it’s too late and the road is relatively wide at that point, yet the speed limit is 30mph.

Hoole History Corner

Dave Rees, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, continues the history of Hoole’s HOOLE HOUSE On 11 August 1915 Hoole House was opened as a Red Cross Auxiliary Hospital following its donation by Mrs Wardell Yerburgh and the closure of Richmond House. Unfortunately, this has led to some confusion with Hoole Bank in the remaining records.

who joined in the enthusiasm of 1914, were in action for the first time. The resulting long casualty lists meant that more hospital space was required at home. In January 1917 the Local Government Board wrote to the Guardians of the Chester Union Workhouse in Hoole Lane requesting its use for treating wounded soldiers. At that time there were 370 inmates, who all had to be relocated. As part of the arrangement the existing nursing staff at the Workhouse would be employed in what was to be renamed, for the duration, Chester War Hospital. Master of the Workhouse was James Martin, his wife Elizabeth died in 1915. His son Percy Martin, 24 Battalion London Regiment died of wounds 22 January 1917. James himself died a week or so later. This left his daughter, Annie without her parents or brother. She was taken in by the family of the Clerk to the Guardians George Hull.

Hoole House required “fitting out” for its new role and this was paid for “to the uttermost farthing” by James H Welsford, a previous tenant of Hoole House, a shipping line owner operating from Liverpool. Two of his ships had been impounded by the Germans at the outbreak of the War. There was a formal opening ceremony, guest of honour being Sir Alfred Keogh, Surgeon General, with the depot band of the Cheshire Regiment playing. Hoole House provided 70 beds and 42 men transferred from the closing Richmond House.

Meanwhile, the Workhouse required conversion work. This was under the direction of Colonel Hugh Huleatt, the senior Royal Engineers officer at Western Command, and father of Helen. This took several months including providing electricity and telephones. Chester War Hospital opened on 27 August 1917. It provided 550 beds initially. This was extended to 600 beds by December 1917, with plans for further expansion. Such a large hospital required a large staff, in addition to the existing Workhouse staff, additional Red Cross Volunteers and Royal Army Medical Corps officers and men were employed. This photograph from February 1918 shows approx. 190 staff.

Tragedy was to strike the Welsford family, when one of the sons, George Keith Welsford, an Observer in 11 Squadron Royal Flying Corps was killed in action. Agnes Kirkpatrick Norie who had received her nursing training at the Oldham Royal Infirmary between 1896 and 1899 became the Matron. She was succeeded by Amy Marshall. A photograph of one of the patients, Sgt Sidney Webber in September 1916 shows that the house still retained the horticultural features installed by Lady Broughton 90 years earlier; other items relating to Sgt Webber are in the Cheshire Image Bank.

CHESTER WAR HOSPITAL Warfare intensified on the Western Front 1916, including the Battle of the Somme where the Kitchener Volunteers

Staff at Chester War Hospital February 1918 At the front and centre we can see Matron Vera Spencer Jones, and to the right as we look the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel W T Prout. His son was killed serving with the Cheshire Regiment on the Somme in 1916. In December an appeal was set up to raise £100 to fund the construction of a “hut” to provide space for the patients to enjoy some recreation and relaxation and for extra items for the coming Christmas celebrations.

ole’s hospitals and their role in World War One. KING & QUEEN VISIT CHESTER

CASUALTIES AT THE HOSPITALS

On 14 May 1917, the King and Queen visited Chester and met staff and patients from all the local Red Cross hospitals in a ceremony at Chester Castle. Sister Mullin led a party of 10 nurses and 25 patients from Hoole Bank at the parade. From Hoole House Matron Amy Maskell led the party of 20 nurses and 25 patients. One of these was Henry Masters, Worcestershire Regiment who was presented with the Distinguished Conduct Medal by The King.

Unfortunately, the care received at the hospitals was not always sufficient and 2 deaths at Hoole Bank and 2 at Hoole House are known. Chester War Hospital received higher numbers and more serious cases were transferred from the other hospitals. As a result, over 60 deaths were recorded here. There were also three deaths among the staff. In some cases, for staff and patients a Memorial service was held at the Chapel of St James the Less attached to the former Workhouse, now the Judo Club.

FORMALISING SUPPORT TO THE HOSPITALS A dedicated railway platform which became known as the ‘Flanders siding’ was built at the Chester Railway Station behind the Queen Hotel on City Road to receive the wounded off hospital trains Support was required to transfer these wounded men to whichever local hospital they were allocated. This was provided initially under the BRCS/St John’s Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) system using two loaned motor vehicles and two ambulances borrowed from Manchester. In July 1916 it was more formally organised as a Transport Section under Commandant Thomas Wain, covering the whole Chester area and out to Hawarden and Wrexham when needed. A Finance Committee was set up, under Colonel Hugh Huleatt (Helen’s father), to raise additional funds. This resulted in extending the fleet of ambulances available to 16, 12 ambulances were based at the Thomas Street depot, five being still privately owned. The unit was demobilised at the end of August 1919 having dealt with 74,841 patients. Practical support to the hospitals, in the form of making splints, rolling bandages and knitting items, was provided by the Red Cross Supply Depots (Working Parties). There were two active in the area. One under Mrs Margaret Frost of Newton Hall, the other under Lady Ellen Hall at Brookside, Hoole Road (currently the Shanghai Chinese Restaurant). The support in terms of entertainments for the wounded patients also became more formalised with the formation of the Chester Military Hospital Entertainment Committee, unsurprisingly Helen Huleatt was heavily involved. This was done in March 1917 and from then organised 124 concerts and 24 river picnics for the patients.

Formerly Chapel of St James the Less

CLOSURE 1919 Although the Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918 and the fighting finished, the wounded still required care, and this carried on for a further six months. Hoole House closed on 26 May 1919 and Hoole Bank on 27th with Farewell Parties being held. Both hospitals had treated over 1,000 patients each. For Hoole Bank we know this was 1,120 of whom 262 were Canadian with only 2 deaths, one attributable to wounds received on the Somme, the other to a pre-existing medical condition. Chester War Hospital continued for a while longer, the last patient leaving in August 1919. Over 450 staff worked at or supported the three hospitals of whom approximately 80 were from Hoole or Newton. Many of those prominent individuals mentioned were officially recognised for their services by the nation or the British Red Cross Society. l The next event of HH&HS is on Wednesday 21st November, the topic is ‘A World War 1 Miscellany’ including input from Dave Rees whose talk will focus on the celebrations / commemorations for the Armistice and into 1919.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER This month I am attending a birthday celebration of a very good friend of ours; Sue and I have known this person for over 20 years, this means we have lots of shared memories, including some very happy ones and some equally as sad. We were looking through some photo albums which recorded some of these events through some specific photographs at christenings, weddings, holidays and Christmas times. We had great fun looking through old photos and it certainly stirred up lots of memories as we remembered the stories that lay behind each of the photos. To be able to remember is wonderful; the brain’s ability to store, retain and recall information creates memories. As we get older memories become more important to us, remembering our childhood, remembering loved ones who have passed away and remembering those special occassions we celebrate within life. Of course not all memories are happy ones, one of the amazing dimensions of remembering is that emotions are attched to our memories, so when we remember someone or some event we encounter afreash the emotions that belong to that memory. November is a month for remembering and as a nation we remember 2 specific things: Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot... Words of “Remember Remember” refer to Guy Fawkes with origins in 17th century English history. On the 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason. The following year in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King and Parliament to commission a sermon to commemorate the event. This practice, together with the nursery rhyme, ensured that this crime would never be forgotten! Then on Remembrance Day, the 11th November, we shall be remembering 100 years to the day the end of the First World War in 1918. The day when the armistice was signed in Northern France, at 5am. Six hours later, the fighting stopped, and to commemorate this there is a two-minute silence in the UK at 11am. This year

44 Tel 01244350398

is a very special occasion and to mark the 100 years anniversary and recognising that this year Remembrance Sunday, is the Andy Glover has lived in Hoole 11th November with his wife Sue for 30 years. here in Hoole the 4 churches Andy began at Hoole Baptist are coming Church, on Westminster together for a Road, as Youth Pastor, before special wreath becoming the Pastor and laying ceremony now Team Leader. at the Hoole and Newton War Memorial on Hoole Rd at 3pm followed by a Memorial Service at All Saints at 3.30pm. Everyone in our community is invited to these 2 special occasions. The poem called ‘For the Fallen’ will be read aloud at these occasions; the most famous stanza of which reads: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. I don’t know if you’ve ever given any thought to the fact that God remembers. God is omniscient, by definition. That means He knows everything there is to know. He knows everything that has happened in the past. He knows what is happening at present. And He knows what will happen in the future. This means that all we have done, good and bad, are all known to Him. He has perfect memory of each and every thing including the wrong that we’ve committed. When we remember some memories we will have feelings of regret and remorse, sometimes we would wish we could change something that was said or done by us or to us. By experiencing God’s forgiveness we can ‘move on’ from these feelings. God does not mysteriously and suddenly “forget” all the bad and wrong things but because of the death of Jesus he chooses to remember them no more – this is the hope of the Christian faith, forgiveness from God via the experience of knowing Jesus enables us to forgive and be forgiven so that we can be free from the effects of some of the bad memories that we so easily remember and become entrapped within the emotions of these memories.
