Rotary club’s first lady president Members of the Rotary Club of West Wirral were delighted by the installation of their first lady President, Jenny Schwarz. This year’s theme in Rotary is ‘Be a gift to the world’; Jenny, with her background and experience, readily fits into this mould. Heswall resident Jenny trained as a physicist at Birmingham University and taught for the whole of her subsequent career at Wirral Grammar School for Girls, retired in 2007. She has visited India 10 times at her own expense, most recently earlier this year, to help in the Rotary-sponsored aim of eliminating polio from our planet. This has involved help with the vaccination of children under the age of 5 years to prevent the re-introduction of the disease. In recent time she has fostered young writer and young musician competitions, taken part in providing mock job interviews for 16 year olds, collaborated closely with the formation of a club for 12 to 18 year olds with learning difficulties, helped renovate a hospital in Tanzania and helped raise funds for Rotary’s ‘End polio now’ campaign.

16 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com Schools merge COUNCILLORS have approved plans to merge Pensby Boys’ and Pensby Girls’ High Schools for the start of the autumn term. The two schools had been struggling with falling numbers and consequently financial problems. Wirral councillors heard that numbers had reached a peak of 844 girls and 836 boys back in 1999 but that these had fallen to 510 and 380 respectively by January of this year. The two schools have worked closely together since 2010 under a single governing body and one head teacher but new intakes remained low. The amalgamation will mean that the Boys’ school will close and all pupils will be housed in the Girls’ school which will become a mixed sex secondary.

Taxi takeover Wirral Satellite Cars has acquired Heswall Taxis, it has been reported. The deal means that the Birkenheadheadquartered company now has over 300 taxis, making it the largest taxi firm on the Wirral. Andrew Jordan, manager of Wirral Satellite Cars, explained that the acquisition gives significant growth in the fleet, drivers and overall demand in Heswall, Irby, Pensby and the surrounding areas. The Bowen Technique

What is it? The Bowen Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using very gentle pressure. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points of the body to perform Bowen’s unique sets of rolling-type moves which stimulate the muscles and soft tissue of the body. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. It is believed that the Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself and clients report the experience of pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy.

hoW Does it Work? One of the least understood areas of the body is the brain. There are something like 600,000 signals that travel from the brain into the body every second and these in turn come back to the brain with information which is then interpreted and sent back out. In the case of the Bowen move, the brain is unable to do this instantly and needs more information to form a response. As it is, just when the brain is asking for more info, the therapist has left the room, and therefore the brain has to send specific signals to the area in order to gauge a response. If the client is lying down, the immediate response is nearly always

One of the more difficult elements to come to terms with is how little is done during a session. In addition, the client may well walk out of the treatment room having felt little or no improvement over and above a sense of relaxation. However, the reactions to Bowen in the days following a treatment can often belie its soft and gentle approach. Stiffness, soreness, headache and feeling like “I’ve been run over by a bus!” are common. All excellent signs, they demonstrate that the brain and body have started the process of repair. This process, when started, is generally rapid and it is not uncommon for even longstanding pain to be reduced or resolved in two or three treatments. Most sports or work-related problems can often be dealt with within the two or three treatments, making Bowen not only good remedial treatment, but cost effective for the client as well.

MiGraiNes Although musculoskeletal problems such as frozen shoulder, back and neck pain account for the majority of conditions brought for Bowen treatment, it can also be helpful with more organic problems. Clients have reported significant improvements with asthma, migraines, irritable bowel, infertility and other reproductive problems. Even hayfever has been brought to Bowen. There are no such things in this life as guarantees and this can be said of Bowen as well. If the body responds to the treatment, then it can and will start the process of repair. Much progress in Dawstone Park Following the inauguration of the Friends of Dawstone Park, in the spring, work has now started on the improvements. The photos show members working when ten members planted 2000 mixed geraniums in the four flower beds. In the previous week the beds had been prepared by 11 members. The visitor will also notice that the ivy on the top wall has been tidied, and wild flower seeds sown in two patches under the wall. Further working parties will be held during the summer; the first took place in July with the task of improving the paths and hedges at the entrances to the park. Looking further ahead, there will be an event in the Park on 29th August. Plans are being formulated, but will be in the form of a picnic, supported by a number of activities for children, live music, stalls, refreshments, etc.

Photo winners have a Great War theme Heswall Photographic Society held their Annual Exhibition of Prints at Ness Gardens. Members of the public were invited to view the images and vote for their favourite . The votes have now been counted and HPS are pleased to announce the winners in the ‘People’s Choice’ competition. The first and second placed winners were on the theme of The Great war – the public clearly had an empathy with the subject this year.
