CCTV appeal follows bar attack Police have issued CCTV stills of a man police would like to speak to following an assault at a bar in Heswall.

The details of the assault, which dates back to May, have only just been released to the media.

A report was received shortly after 12.20am on 12th May that an 18-year-old man had been struck in the face with a glass on the dancefloor of Paradox nightclub on Pensby Road, causing a laceration to his lip and chin.

He was taken to hospital where he required stitches.

Officers have released a CCTV image of one man they wish to trace, as he may be able to assist with their enquiries.

Detective Inspector Brian O’Hagan said: “This was a shocking incident, and the offender who struck the victim caused him a very deep laceration to his lip.

“We want to speak to the man pictured as we think he may be able to assist the enquiry so I would encourage him, or anyone who recognises himself, to make himself known.”

Thornton Hall Hotel wins Best Afternoon Tea Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa is celebrating after being crowned one of the UK’s top afternoon tea destinations.

The hotel fought off fierce competition to take the title of Best Tasting Afternoon Tea of the Year 2018 in a hotly-contested live final in central London yesterday.

Thornton Hall was one of 16 finalists in the inaugural national contest, and the only one based outside the capital.

And the team from the hotel’s awardwinning Lawns Restaurant triumphed in the taste stakes with a presentation of its traditional Great Wirral afternoon tea which was served to judges – including the pastry chef from the House of Commons - at the venue on the banks of the River Thames.

The Thornton Hall team travelled to London to prepare ahead of the event at the Westminster Boating Base.

Competitors, including five star London hotels like the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and The Stafford, had to serve two guests while being watched by a team of five judges who marked them on presentation, service, taste and overall experience.

Awards being contested were Best Tasting, Best Presentation and overall Afternoon Tea of the Year.

The Lawns Restaurant’s traditional

afternoon tea includes a choice of more than 20 varieties of loose leaf tea.

Finger sandwiches with seasonal fillings and served on wholemeal and white bread are accompanied by homemade cakes and fancies and freshly baked scones, with bespoke jams and curds produced specially for the hotel by Pant Glas Bach Preserves in North Wales.

Hotel general manager Geoff Dale said Thornton Hall was proud to have brought the trophy home to the North West.

He added: “To be up against many five star London venues and win is quite an achievement.

“I’m so proud of the whole team- the Lawns’ head chef Chad Hughes, our pastry chef Ellie Fletcher and restaurant manager Abdallah Othmani.

“As we were the only countryside hotel we also took our view with us on two pop ups with photos of our gardens, so the judges could really get the Thornton Hall experience.”

Alison seeks inspirations through verse Heswall poet, musician and teacher Alison Schultz is publishing a new volume of poetry, to be launched at West Kirby Arts Centre in 2nd September. The poems reflect on family life and the beautiful location.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

After the dry spell.....

A

fter the dry period in early summer that caused some plant to die, many late summer perennials will be flowering less.

Plants that enjoy the dry weather in late summer include Echinops ritro or Globe Thistle. They will grow to 1.5m tall and have soft thistle shaped leaves with tall stems bearing golf ball sized blue flowers. The need support but do well at the back of borders in full sun and well drained soils. Another blue plant is the Eryngiums or Sea Holly.

These are shorter plants, to 75cm tall with teazle like blue spiky flowers. They also love full sun and well drained soils.

Veronicas are perennials with small and tall varieties in pink, white and blue which are good for sunny positions but need more moisture. Another good plant for sun is Verbena bonariensis which has tall stiff stems topped with heads of small purple flowers. Again, it takes up little space in the ground and lasts for weeks. Not hardy in severe winters but it will self seed.

Those of you that have permanently damp soil, late summer is great for flowers. In August the purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria has tall spikes of magenta pink flowers. A quirky plant for those with damp soil and space for it to wander,try Lysimachia clethroides (up to 60cm) with its white foxtail flowers. They remind me of meerkats on the lookout!

If you have an established hellebore plant in the garden, look under the large leaves and you may find small seedlings already growing. Pot them up or move them out into more space so they can grow on.

Keep beans, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes well watered in summer. Once the squashes and pumpkins have grown to size the foliage should die off gradually. Keep them outside to ripen the skin and keep any foliage off the ripening pumpkins.

If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Laskey Farm, Thelwell is open on 11th and 12th August with many interesting features including a series of pools and water features with superb poolside planting, herbaceous borders and a maze of grasses and prairie style planting. Abbeywood near Delamere is open on 12th August. This garden has a stunning exotic garden full of colour, formal gardens leading out into huge borders filled with sweeping planting of grasses and perennials.

Inspired Bathrooms and Kitchens to Less than five months after establishing its high street presence in Heswall, Wirral, Inspired Bathrooms and Kitchens has taken the confident step of leasing more space next to its brand new showroom on the town’s Telegraph Road.

When the expanded premises opens later this year it will occupy almost 2000sq ft, doubling Inspired’s capacity to showcase its range of bathrooms and kitchens, which embraces trusted brands like Bisque, Laufen, Aqata, Neff, Pronorm, and Hansgrohe.

Managing director Mike Lloyd says: “I’ve lived on the Wirral all my life, in Oxton and now Willaston. My co-director, James Kenrick, lives in West Kirby and before that Heswall. I started the company in Prenton in 2007 and expanded to Chester five years ago, but Jay and I both believe Heswall is the centre of the part of the Wirral that stretches from Neston, Parkgate, Willaston, Thornton Hough, to Heswall and beyond to Caldy, West Kirby, Hoylake, and we felt we needed

to take the plunge and establish a presence in the town.”

James adds: “Before we took it over our new showroom was a bar that had ceased trading. Its cloud turned out to be our silver lining. The location is great and, by coincidence, the landlord is someone we’d installed two bathrooms for, which helped make things happen quickly.”

Inspired took the premises on in November last year and opened in February. The fitting out of the showroom cost just shy of £100,000, and now the company has committed to a significant extra spend.

Mike explains: “From the off we loved the Heswall site, but

we also knew it was never going to be quite large enough for what we wanted to do and achieve. Great computer aided designs we can show clients are fantastically useful, but they also want to see the actual product they’re thinking of choosing.

“That can take a lot of display space, but just as we finished Heswall’s Inspired Bathrooms and Kitchens, were happy and settled and welcoming customers, estate agent Karl Tatler, one of our two next door neighbours, walked in and said, ‘I’m moving and was wondering if you might fancy taking my lease over.’ So, even though we had not long finished a complete shop fit, I thought, yes, I do, even

Mike has been encouraged by the progress his Inspired presence in Heswall has made so far. “Heswall’s a nice, busy town with a sense of community we really want to be part of.

Sales are in line with our hopes and expectations, so it just makes sense to invest more and make the new showroom bigger and better.

“The other good news is that we’ve a lot of experience designing and installing first class kitchens and bathrooms, so I can guarantee Inspired Heswall will be an attractive and welcoming place where people can browse even more of what we have to offer.”

The present Inspired showroom will remain open throughout the forthcoming shop fitting work next door.

AUGUST – REFLECTIONS AND HEROES I have been tracing my family tree for many years and there is one person I want to know everything about in particular and that is my paternal grandfather Ernest. He died before I was born but even so I am very proud to be his granddaughter. He served with the Grenadier Guards in WWI and this weekend I have been reading the War Diaries of his battalion. Although never mentioned by name the daily activities of the rank and file are listed, some mundane, some funny others heart-breaking:- the drills, sports days (boxing being very popular), trench digging, movements from one place to another, pantomimes and the battles, it covers the latter part of the war and the impending Armistice is quite palpable. Granddad was gassed twice and went back twice to fulfil his duty. He returned and met my grandmother late in his life but they had my dad and the rest his history! To me Pte Ernest Patefield is a hero of the very best kind.
