Parents at two local schools have been going above and beyond recently. At Barnston Primary, the PTA’s efforts have helped to fund a new library and outdoor classroom, with the recent summer fair going some way towards the cause. At HeswallPrimary, the parents completed the notoriously difficult Three Peaks challenge. After 300 years, that rule was coming to an end. For 6 months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. The film’s story unfolds within that great House. Upstairs lived Mountbatten together with his wife and daughter; downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - converged on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted. A decision was taken to divide the country and create a new Muslim homeland: Pakistan. It was a decision

Heswall lads cycle for Last month we briefly reported on Heswall Round Table’s coast to coast challenge but we didn’t really have space to include more information. So here’s a fuller account of their efforts. Recently 10 members of Heswall Round Table and 41 Club completed the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge, riding from Whitehaven to Sunderland, a distance of 138 miles. Although the mileage wasn’t that difficult, the team faced a number of very challenging climbs over the Cumbrian and Pennine hills. They faced approximately 10,000ft of ascent, including the Hartside and Winlatter passes in Cumbria and Black Hill and Killhope Cross in the North Pennines, both of which rise to around 2,000ft and are in the top 10 of Britain’s highest roads. It was all in a very good cause as the lads were raising funds for Tomorrow’s Women Wirral, http:// www.tomorrowswomen.org.uk/ a local charity

AUGUST – READING ALL THE BOOKS I know I have mentioned it before but I travelled quite extensively during my 20s. By a twist of fate I arrived in Chile, a place that I fell in love with so completely that I ended up living there for a few years. I had trained as a nurse and spent a lot of time working in the poorest communities promoting various health programmes. My colleagues and I encountered a lot of adults who could not read so we devised our own basic reading programme that would hopefully encourage the fun of reading. It was a difficult thing to get parents (especially men) to admit they could not read but we decided to target the children and we hoped (naively) that perhaps the adults would learn by osmosis! It was not always plain sailing and sometimes it was downright frustrating but when it came together and kids began to read to us it was a joy to see and hopefully planted a seed in the minds of the parents. Like most things we take for granted reading can and does change lives! I love to read quirky books, ones that take you out of your comfort zone, but I also like soft gentle books that can make my day a little bit brighter. Whatever your style make sure you read all the books you can!

Michelle Kuo – Reading With Patrick After graduating, Michelle Kuo goes to a teach in a small town in Arkansas that is povertystricken and rife with prejudice. The majority of the inhabitants are black and education is poor. Michelle is an exemplary teacher but due to family pressure she leaves after two years to study law at Harvard. She later learns that one of her most promising students, Patrick, is now in jail awaiting trial for murder. The town Patrick lives does not have a functioning justice system, he has no lawyer to represent him, nothing is done ‘by the book’, things do not look good. Michelle resumes teaching Patrick, albeit now in a cell, and encourages him to write. Be warned this is a true story and it has no fairytale ending but as heart breaking as this book is, there is a lesson to be learned that literature is for everyone.

Zinzi Clemmons -What We Lose This beautiful debut novel reads like an autobiography. The main character Thandie is grieving over the death of her mother while dealing with prejudices and other setbacks in her life, having moved from South Africa to live and work in the USA. The reader of this book may have little in common with Thandie, her history , with her struggles or her setbacks, her losses or achievements but Zinzi Clemmons definitely puts you firmly in Thandie’s shoes. A raw book that I read just before the recent death of my own mother, the author succinctly conveys the small fractures that can appear in life after the loss of a parent.

Jon Burgerman – Rhyme Crime I am such a push over for rhyming books for children I love them and this is no exception! “Once upon a time, a thief committed a crime. Everything he stole was replaced with a rhyme”! Lots of wonderfully silly rhymes, a perfect interactive story that will leave the kids and you in fits of giggles…and can you solve the mystery at the end?
