‘Friends group’ aims to keep Dawstone Park looking lovely

T

he Heswall Society is organising an Open Meeting to discuss the Formation of a Friends of Dawstone Park Group at St Peter’s School on Wednesday, 4th February at 7pm.

This delightful park situated in central Heswall was opened in 1931 “to provide a rural sanctuary of seclusion for elder people” and “the provision of a small open space, free from danger, for the younger children to enjoy their pastimes”. Dawstone Park is a major asset to Heswall much enjoyed by children; their parents appreciate its compact size, and the secure boundaries separating it from surrounding roads. Dog walkers appreciate it for the same reasons, and older teenagers use it as a place to meet. The panoramic view over the Dee to the Welsh mountains, makes it a popular picnic site. Ever since it opened it has been famous for its flower beds with colourful displays of bedding plants. When the snow comes the park becomes a toboggan run, enjoyed by young and old alike. The children’s playground is being renovated to a very high standard thanks to the efforts of the local councillors who have helped obtain grants from the South Wirral Constituency Committee to supplement the funding available from the Parks Department. John Waite, from the Heswall Society, said: “However, in spite of this really welcome investment in the park, its unique character is under threat. This problem is shared with all parks and open spaces on Wirral, as Wirral Council struggles to maintain its recreational spaces due to cuts in government funding. Future maintenance will be restricted to mowing the grass and emergency tree work, and the glorious flower beds can no longer be planted. Ivy and bindweed have taken over the borders. “A Friends’ Group is essential to achieve a Green Flag award, and attaining this status provides a great advantage when applying for grants.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Thurstaston Road at going home time

Opposition to housing plans in Lower Heswall The Heswall Society has objected to a planning application to develop four houses on the site of the former nursery on Dee View Road and a further four houses on the field which continues alongside St Peter’s School down to Thurstaston Road. The Society is concerned about the proposed new road from the development into the narrow Thurstaston Road which is already congested with bus stops, school crossing patrol and school access, various parking restrictions and only has a footpath on one side. The Society is similarly concerned about the proposed access onto the narrow and steep Dee View Road and has also raised concerns about the design of the two developments which lie in the Conservation Area. Council sets to work on heathland tidy-up COUNCIL contractors have begun work clearing heathland in Heswall Dales, Thurstaston Common and Caldy Hill. The work on these Sites of Special Scientific Interest involves cutting down any unwanted shrubs and trees Councillor Chris Meaden said: “We are carrying out essential work to maintain these areas of historic and important heathland that is home to a variety of flora and fauna that can only flourish in such habitats. “This cutting work has to be carried out in the winter months when these species are dormant and there are no nesting birds or invertebrate and reptile activity.” The work will continue until the end of February.

Gardening by Janet Heath

The promise of spring Late winter can often bring a blast of cold weather but it does not stop plants from starting to grow and flower. Bulbs start the year with crocuses and snowdrops out first. Crocuses do best in sun as the flowers will open wide in the sun, then close as the sun leaves them. Crocus tommasinianus has pale mauve flowers with golden stamens in the middle and the birds do not damage the blooms. Birds seem to like the larger flowers especially yellow ones, so I now avoid growing these! A shady site with well drained soil under deciduous trees suits the snowdrops better. They will gradually carpet the ground under trees and shrubs. I would

also add Iris reticulata to my early flowering bulbs. These small but exotic blue, white or creamy coloured flowers will enjoy a sunny or lightly shaded spot in any well drained soil. Plant all these bulbs in groups close together for best effect. An early flowering climber is Clematis cirrhosa Wisley Cream. This is an evergreen climber that will do well in a sheltered sunny position and give you white, slightly scented flowers in late winter. Ensure the roots are kept cool with the growth in the sun. Prune to shape after flowering but this variety only needs pruning if it becomes too large and to remove dead stems. Witch hazel or Hamamelis is another early flowering shrub although be warned, the flowers are small so don’t expect a

showy plant. However they do look good in light woodland with tiny spidery yellow, red or orange flowers, often slightly scented. In autumn the leaves turn red or yellow. Underplant with snowdrops and crocuses and plant next to a Cornus alba sibirica with red stems for a colourful display in February. Mulch those perennials whose buds are just below the surface of the soil with a layer of well rotted manure. Paeonies have big fat buds at soil level, rodgersias and heleniums sit just below the surface and all would have new shoots protected from freezing by a cosy layer of mulch. Also mulch fruit trees and shrubs with a layer of manure and complete pruning of apples and pears before buds start to grow.
