Wirral West Community Fund open for applications!
WIRRAL West’s community groups, voluntary organisations or social enterprises are invited to bid for funding for projects that will make real improvements to their local area and people’s wellbeing. The Wirral West Community Fund opened on Monday 11th January, and local groups can bid for funds from £100 to £1000. Applications will close at 12 noon on Friday 26th February, and groups will be required to deliver their projects by January 2017. Cllr Jeff Green, who chairs the Wirral West Constituency Committee, said: “Last year’s Community Fund supported dozens of projects over the constituency’s five wards. Grants went to allotment societies, carers support groups, lunch clubs and some of our many Friends Of parks and libraries groups. We also supported Christmas lights, community events and activities relating to the arts, history and conservation. “These local projects make a big difference and once again we are offering an opportunity for groups to apply for funding and for residents and communities to show their support for the projects and improvements that matter to them.’ Bids are voted on by the public, with almost 1,900 people voting for different projects in 2014/15’s bidding process. For more information, visit www.wirral.gov.uk/wirralwest, email helengallagher@wirral.gov.uk or call Helen Gallagher on 0151 691 8650. Wirral West Constituency Committee includes Arrowe Park, parts of Barnston, Caldy, Frankby, Greasby, Hoylake, Irby, Meols, Newton, Overchurch, Pensby, Thingwall, Thurstaston, Upton, West Kirby and Woodchurch. 8 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

Emily embarks on Antarctic mission A Royal Navy engineer who hails from Heswall is the sole woman in a team of Antarctic adventurers. Among the group who are following in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton is Sub Lt Emily Kutarski, who is serving as an engineering officer on board a Type 45 destroyer. The 29-year-old said: “I’m looking forward to building on the new skills I’ve learned during the training and selection process and hope that my actions will inspire other girls to get out exploring.” The expedition departed in midJanuary with 11 personnel from the Royal Navy and Marines on a six-week trip to the Antarctic and South Georgia. The aim of “Exercise Antarctic Endurance “is to inspire a new generation of sailors and marines to seek adventure but will also provide the Navy and Ministry of Defence with research into team dynamics and leadership. Sub Lt Kutarski is at the start of her career having only been in the service for two years. She moved to Heswall in 1997, and attended Birkenhead High School before going on to study aeronautical engineering at Imperial College in London, and then eventually joining the Navy. Keen climber and triathlete Emily added: “While I may have no previous experience in the Antarctic I do have a passion for mountaineering. “This started while undertaking a six-month solo backpacking trip in 2009 when I climbed several mountains and volcanoes in South East Asia and spent five weeks in Nepal trekking to both Annapurna and Everest Base Camps.”

Lots of kind comments for Heswall festival The organisers of the Heswall Christmas Festival have been reflecting on what was, by and large, a big success. The Heswall and District Business Association arranged for an ice rink and Christmas market in early and made sure the lights were shining throughout the festive period. Unfortunately the weather was unkind during the festival weekend but judging by the comments from visitors it’s something that should be repeated. Abbas Hussein (pictured), from the HDBA, thanked local businesses and groups for their donations that made the festival possible. Abbas said that there were some remarks from skaters complaining about the artificial rink but overall the reaction was very positive. Here are some comments from visitors: Tracy Jupp - Thank you so much for putting on the Xmas festival. My daughter and friend
had a brilliant time skating and the new lights look amazing. Visitors have said wow aren’t you lucky having all this in such a small town. I totally agree with them! So appreciate all the effort that went into it and Heswall remains absolutely beautiful! The only downside was the weather, but I guess you can’t do much about that in December lol Phil Saunders - The important thing was that my wife, children and I had a brilliant time and did not stop laughing. It really did add a bit of Christmas Spirit to Heswall in my opinion. I am really grateful that someone took the time and initiative to organise an event for our community. Nikki Caowin - Thank u for organising this event, myself , husband & children had a lovely time & lots of laughs, I’m very grateful of what you are trying to achieve in heswall , hopefully as a community we can help make this bigger & better each year . Em Cotgrave - Thank you for organising this and trying to bring some festive cheer to heswall I took my kids for an evening of fun and that is exactly what they had it was lovely to see heswall looking so Christmassy hopefully this wonderful thing can be built on with more help and money from people Deborah Colquitt - Thank you to those who spent their precious time trying to organise something festive for the community of Heswall. The lights are so much better this year and once again we have a tree! There is a buzz around the festive area which surely has to be a good thing. Hopefully it will now be built on year by year

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and
Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Country park volunteers thanked Wirral Country Park’s Rangers have said thanks to local volunteers for a year of hard work. The annual dinner was held at the park’s Visitor Centre, with members of the volunteer taskforce celebrating the success of projects to restore spectacular views of the Dee Estuary and to maintain the Dee Cliffs Site of Special Scientific Interest. Cllr Chris Meaden, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: ‘Many of our parks and green spaces are maintained in partnership with voluntary groups like the taskforce at Wirral Country Park, who give up their time to support our Rangers to clear vegetation and work on some of our most important assets. “The volunteers at Wirral Country Park have helped to restore the grasslands at Dawpool
Nature Reserve, and done a lot of the heavy lifting as we work to manage the Dee Cliffs. This has been a fruitful and important partnership to ensure that our environment is protected for future generations.” The taskforce is made up of retired professionals who are keen to stay fit and active and students who want to gain experience of countryside management or work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award. All volunteers are also able to work towards the John Muir Award, which encourages people of all backgrounds ‘to connect with, enjoy and care for wild places’. The park is also supported by local charities Autism Together and Phoenix Futures. Anyone wishing to join the Wirral Country Park Thursday Task Force can contact the Rangers at Wirral Country Park at wcp@ wirral.gov.uk.

Growing up in the 50s I `VE SEEN EVERYTHING, MAN - I`VE SEEN EVERYTHING IN THE 40`S THRU` THE FIFTIES - I`VE SEEN EVERYTHING. Ration books, Demob suits, relics of the war Bombed out sites, pub fights, lino on the floor Ragmen, Boy’s Pen, riding on a tram Plastercine, new Queen, scoffing chips and Spam. Walk to school, break a rule, you will get a smack, Nit nurse, what a curse, a soap they called Durbak, Sticky lice, not nice, Pear drops were the best Bad teeth, dentist grief, don’t forget your vest. Worn out shoes, “up the Blues”, Dad’s tales of Dixie Dean, Chara trips, Smith’s crisps, books from Auntie Jean. Man from Pru, outside loo, jolidays in North Wales, Woodbines, washing lines, biking country lanes. Churchill, Buffalo Bill, Roy “triggers” happy trails, Want a sweet; suck your feet, loads of old wives’ tales. Allalio, kick the can, a game of Blindman`s bluff, Playing out, Ollies, we could never get enough. “Our Father”, sit up straight, do I have to tell you off? School inspection, oh no, drop your kecks and cough. Cod liver oil, gas masks, hear the sound of the docks, Walk two miles to school, with a ruler down your socks. Downtown to TJ`s, or the fair in Wally Hall Park. Puddin and beef at togga, your Mam shouts when it’s dark. Bommie nights, no tights, Blow Football or Shoot, Jam Butties, conny-onny, read my I Spy book. Waltzers, New Brighton Baths, Provy Man`s at the door, Half-day closing, CO=OP number-167464, Housewives choice, Uncle Mac, you could “Take your Pick”. Ship’s horns on the Mersey, smog must be thick, Errol Flynn, Marilyn, mumble like James Dean, Whirligig, Curly Wee, Compton’s slick Brylcreem. Light Programme, Luxemburg, loving Danny Kaye, Sterrie carts, Marciano, Enid Blyton was OK, Rock and Roll, Jiving, Haley round the clock. A Tony Curtis haircut, I’ll race you round the block. All these things and people have passed into a time long gone. But what a time to share with them, what a time for fun. There’s many more I’ve missed, just think of all the jokes, But I think I’ll stop now---Th—th—That’s all folks!

The way we were
Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.
The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering.

The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom.
Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to
get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’
And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village
Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.
A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.
Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

‘The Gang’s all here’ LOCAL Scout and Guide groups are busy rehearsing for their forthcoming Gang Show. The West Wirral Scout and Guide Gang Show takes place at the Gladstone Theatre, Port Sunlight, from 7th-9th April, with the theme of ‘Best of British’. The Gang Show here in the Wirral has been going for over a quarter of a century although the first one took place in London in 1932. The original show was the work of a Holborn Rover, Ralph Reader, who agreed to write and produce a show to raise funds for London Scouts. As with many great things, the Gang Show name arose accidentally. One night, during rehearsals of the original show, Ralph Reader received a message that a title for the show had to be decided that evening. The cast had taken a break. As they reassembled to continue rehearsing, Ralph asked one of the boys, “Are they all here?” In a Cockney accent the boy replied, “Aye Skip, the gang’s all here.” “The Gang’s all here!” replied Ralph, “That was the title I’d been looking for.” In West Wirral………… The West Wirral Scout and Guide Gang Show was formed in 1990 from Scouts from 1st Great Meols and Hilbre. In 1993 it ‘evolved’ into its current form when they were joined by the rest of West Wirral District, the Guides and Wallasey District. Since 1990 they have staged 14 Gang Shows and seven Theatre Group productions performing to over 20,000
people. To achieve this over 1,000 young people have been involved. The cast for the 2016 Show ‘Best of British’ stands at 70 so as you can see it’s a fantastic opportunity for those in West Wirral and Wallasey aged 9 and above to work together as a team to produce a high quality production. Over 30% of our cast return to take part in the next show which we believe demonstrates their enjoyment of the ‘Gang Show Experience’. The ‘Gang Show’ is a form of entertainment unique to Scouting (and, now, Guiding), thanks to the original creation of the late Ralph Reader, CBE. In keeping with Ralph’s original concept, our Show includes large and spectacular Choral numbers, with soloists and dancers where appropriate, blended with Comedy items. For the cast, particularly the youngsters, it is often their first experience of appearing before a large audience and they learn many new skills including Stagecraft, Choral Singing, and Movement plus Teamwork and Discipline. They gain a lot of self-confidence too! For the Production Team, there is a great sense of achievement and pride, especially when they see the result of all their hard work pleasing the audience and compare this happy, self-confident, ‘Gang’ with the group of individuals who turned up at the first Rehearsal. For all concerned, it is great FUN (despite all the hard work!) and, of course, it is excellent publicity for Scouting & Guiding.

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL
By Kerry Keight
Well I truly hope the New Year has started off with a bang and that books and reading will be a big part of 2016 for you all. The next events taking place at Linghams in February are as follows Feb 9th an evening with Ann Cleeves the very popular author of the Vera Stanhope series, her latest book The Moth Catcher is now out in paperback. We also have The Unmumsy Mum a popular lifestyle blogger who writes about the ups, downs and realities of being a mum in a modern world should be fun – the dates of her visit have yet to be confirmed so look out for the signs or check our website www.linghams. co.uk We are thrilled that we are having more children writing little reviews about books they have read so if you have budding readers who have enjoyed a book get them to write a little review and they will get 10% of their next book! Lean in 15 – Joe Wicks I am not usually one for faddy diets or the January nod to getting healthy, thinner, quicker etc but Joe’s book is about fuelling your body properly without resorting to low-calorie diets. As a busy working mum I want to put good healthy food on the table in super quick time for all my family to enjoy together. Also if you are vegetarian you can substitute the meat element with Quorn, Tofu or just more veggies. Definitely worth a look (also I have just been told that he could just be coming to Linghams for a whistle stop signing session!)
The Loney – Andrew Michael Hurley
River of Ink, Genesis – Helen Dennis
The Loney is as atmospheric and as eerie as you want a horror story to be. You can feel the tension cranking up and at times I was almost too scared to turn the page fearing that I would be faced with untold terror, but it is not that kind of tale. The horror is creeping and menacing, but that is mainly to do with landscape of The Loney a bleak and windswept area in the north of England. But there are elements of humour with some of the local characters, and also beautiful sensitivity when dealing with the narrator and his brother who has learning difficulties. Andrew Michael Hurley is the winner of the Costa 2015 First Novel Award, what a brilliant debut!
A teenage boy is found on the banks of the River Thames, he cannot remember who he causing a social media frenzy as the world tries to find out who he is, the only clue being an elaborate symbolic drawing made by the boy. This could quite possible be the Da Vinci Code for kids. River of Ink is full of symbols, alchemy and jam-packed with action that takes the reader on a trek across Europe as the boy takes on a new identity to try and find out who he is and to ascertain who of those he meets on his journey are his friends or foe . Great characters and the best thing this first in a trilogy so start reading now!
