CAR parking charges are deemed a necessity these days in town centres - but now Wirral Council reportedly wants to introduce pay and display machines at country parks where parking has been traditionally free. Also in this edition there is news of how teens can apply for a summer citizenship scheme, an update from MP Alison McGovern, old Heswall, books with Linghams, and how a care home provided free meals for elderly people.

Parking charges at Wirral Country Park? A funding shortfall could force Wirral Wirral Country Park Council to charge for car parking at the peninsular’s country parks. The Wirral Globe reports that a decision was quietly passed at the end of last year to start the process of buying new pay and display equipment for the country parks in Greasby, Frankby Irby, Pensby and Thingwall, West Kirby and Thurstaston, Eastham and New Brighton. Leader of the Conservatives on Wirral Council, Cllr Jeff Green, was quoted as saying: “Having seen this decision and investigated the intention behind it has been confirmed that this equipment is destined for the introduction of car parking charges at Royden Park, Arrowe Park, Wirral Country Park and Eastham Country Park along with Perch Rock in New Brighton. “I’m sure Labour councillors are conscious of how unpopular the suggestion was last time it was tabled but it appears they are determined to try and sneak this through with the bare minimum of consultation.” A council spokesman explained that it must address its largest ever single year budget deficit, with £45m of cuts in the next financial year. The spokesman blamed ‘huge reductions’ in the funding the council receives from local government, adding: “One of the areas we will look at is car parking; in particular, modest increases in tariffs at car parks across the borough, and putting in charges at some car parks which are currently free.”

and use all the space in your home
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Releasing cash from your home
E
QUITY RELEASE is the name given to a range of products that let you access the equity (cash) tied up in your home if you are over the age of 55. You can take the money you release as a lump sum or, with some schemes, several smaller amounts. Equity release may seem like a good option if you want some extra money and don’t want to move house. It can sometimes be the only option when couples separate and one of you wishes to remain in the house but needs to pay the other a lump sum, or if you need essential repairs but do not have the cash .
GETTING ADVICE If you are thinking of taking out an equity release product, you should take financial advice from a specialist. We can put you in touch with an independent specialist if you wish. All advisers recommending equity release schemes must have a specialist qualification. Check that your adviser does. When you have seen a financial advisor and decided to proceed, you will also need to obtain legal advice as a Solicitor will be required as a condition of the offer to act on your behalf. Our Solicitor Jackie Campion has over 15 years’ experience in dealing with the legal aspects relating to equity release.
For further information please contact Jackie Campion on 0151 342 9021, email jackie@campionsolicitors.co.uk forHeswall a no obligation quote. Local February 2017

Care home provides some festive cheer A care home in Heswall dished up free festive dinners to elderly residents in the town in an effort to tackle what can be a lonely time of a year. The Hazelwell, a new ‘all inclusive’, residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Heswall, organised the three-course charitable lunch followed by an afternoon of entertainment for those who may have ended up spending Christmas Day alone last year. Guests enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and a glass of bubbly all prepared by head chef Steve Devenport. The £5.5million-pound development is built on the old site of the Cleaver Hospital and opened last summer. Its leisure facilities include a home cinema, salon and nail bar, gym, library and a stunning rooftop terrace with views over the River Dee. Manager Liza Millington said: “Christmas can be a very lonely time for lots of people and many may have ended up spending it alone. “Here at The Hazelwell, we wanted to do something for the community in the lead up to Christmas which would give elderly pensioners, who have no family around them, some companionship and festive cheer. It also gave them the chance to see what life at The Hazelwell is like. “Residents and guests enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner and some made new friends. It was a memorable day with a great festive atmosphere.” For more information call Liza on 0151 342 9654, email info@thehazelwell.com or visit www.thehazelwell.com

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and
Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
COLOUR in the Cold FEBRUARY holds the promise of spring in often in cold and frozen conditions so plants have to be tough to flower. February is known as the snowdrop season so try and take time out to visit local woodland or some of the gardens with drifts of snowdrops and other early flowering bulbs. Rode Hall in Cheshire has snowdrop walks from 4th February to 5th March, Dunham Massey has a large winter garden with snowdrops and is open daily then there is Chirk Castle with the display of drifts of snowdrops in the woodland. Other bulbs to look out for are the tiny Scilla or Chionodoxa with their dark to light blue star shaped flowers. They would do well planted with snowdrops and the winter aconite Eranthis hyemalis with their rich buttercup yellow flowers. Dunham Massey gardens plant drifts of the bulbs mentioned above and add the short Iris reticulata varieties. The blue Chionodoxa with the Iris Katharine Hodgkin peeping over the dead leaves makes a lovely show for early spring. In addition there are some shrubs that have scented flowers. The small spidery flowers of Witch hazel or Hamamellis come in a number of different varieties. Some are scented and I would recommend Hamamelis x intermedia Vesna with pale orange flowers. Another classic scented shrub is Daphne mezereum which needs some shelter and does well on any soil but heavy clay soil. The shrub will grow to 1.5 m tall, is evergreen and has heavily scented pink flowers from February onwards. Lastly the winter honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima smells like summer honeysuckle but the flowers are small. This shrub also likes a bit of shelter and also dislikes heavy clay soil. The shrub doesn’t look much in summer with its twiggy stems but earns a place in any garden with winter scent. Run a summer flowering clematis through it in summer to add colour. Late February into March is the time to prune dogwood grown for their stems. If your soil is rich and the plants are growing well, you can cut the stems down to a stump about 30 cms tall and new shoots should be produced. If the plants are spindly, then give them a good feed in March and cut back stems every couple of years. LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Wirral South MP Alison McGovern
What awaits us this year? I’d like to wish everybody living in Heswall a very Happy New Year and wish you all the best for 2017. In my previous article for the magazine I focussed on the Heswall Ice Business festival. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank those who held events in Heswall over the Christmas period. I enjoyed my time at the Ice event which showcased local businesses. I would like to thank organisers for hosting the successful event. It was great to meet the Whitfield Business team behind the event last year. As I reflect on 2016 there is one particular political event that sticks out in my mind and that is the referendum on our membership of the European Union. Wirral voted to remain but the country opted to leave. I campaigned to remain in the union as I believed it was best for Britain to do so. In 2017 I will be monitoring the implementation of the process of leaving the EU and how the Prime Minister is handling this. I want a divided Britain and not an undivided one. I have worked with local ethnic minority groups as I have been concerned about divisions following the referendum and in 2017 I will continue to hope for a undivided Britain and play my part by continuing to liaise with ethnic minority groups. As we enter a New Year I am also keeping the citizens of Syria in my thoughts. Following the death of my friend and colleague Jo Cox I became the Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Friends of Syria. Jo’s shoes are a big pair to fill but I have and will continue to do my best to work for the people of Syria. Last year there were a number of Parliamentary debates on Syria which I was involved with. This year I will continue my work on speaking up for those facing daily persecution in Syria. I look forward to another year assisting my constituents and meeting local businesses, community groups and charities. As ever please do contact me if you need my assistance or want me to visit you organisation in Heswall.

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.”

Joint and Muscular Problems Fatigue
Post traumatic stress disorder Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by traumatic and distressing events which many military service men and woman often suffer from after serving in the Armed Forces. The time length when someone suffers from PTSD can vary massively. It can occur straight after a traumatic incident or can be triggered years later. Someone who is suffering from PTSD often relives the incident through nightmares or flashbacks triggered by everyday situations. Symptoms may include: l Re-experiencing - when the individual relives the traumatic event resulting in physical changes such as erratic behaviour, pain or trembling. l Avoidance and emotional numbing - avoiding certain people, places or objects which remind the PTSD sufferer of the traumatic incident. They might also avoid discussing the event completely.
l Feeling on edge l Depression l Anxiety l Headaches Bowen Therapy can help to relieve the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as it relieves stress from deep inside the body which can help reduce the symptoms of PTSD and can encourage the individual to regain a normal life. The Bowen Technique is a finger and thumb rolling movement which is applied to specific points of the body. It is performed on muscles, ligaments and soft tissue using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that person. No hard manipulation or force is needed or used. The Bowen Technique encourages the whole body to restore its natural hormonal and physiological balance, resulting in a release of deep stress from the individual’s body. Bowen Therapy is not forcing the body to change, but asking the body to
recognise the treatment and make the make the improvements accordingly. People normally find that Bowen Therapy is a gentle and relaxing experience. The sessions generally last around 30 – 60 minutes. Only 1 – 3 sessions may be necessary to see and feel a result, however, depending on the severity of the PTSD the individual is suffering, they may require more.

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL
By Kerry Keight
FEBRUARY – THE MONTH BETWEEN JANUARY AND MARCH! February is here and I hope that you have set yourselves challenges to read more in 2017! I obviously love to read but at home I can be frequently heard to moan “I have nothing to read” with my husband looking at me and then at the piles and piles of books that are two sometimes three deep on our bookshelves and raising his eyes to the heavens and walking away quietly. But is it usually this time of year that I re-read favourite books. I was cleaning the bookshelves a task and a half but found my copy of Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, “downed tools” and started to lose my self in this beautiful book, a tale of small town America told in short stories with Olive Kitteridge playing a central or peripheral part in each story, just a wonderful book, that I would encourage anyone to read. We have wonderful things coming through the pipeline at Linghams so keep your eyes peeled but here are our Events for February so come a long and support your local bookshop and some fabulous authors.. Sat 4th Feb local author Elizabeth Gates 12-1pm, Wed 8th Feb Cathy Bramley (fantastic author lauded by Kathy Fforde) Thurs 23rd Feb at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa author extraordinaire Joanna Trollope! Hannah Kent – The Good People After her stunning debut novel Burial Rights she has written another best seller I believe. Set in rural Ireland in 1825 and loosely based on real events, Nora a widow is caring for her grandson, who cannot walk or speak, the villagers believe he is changeling and bringing them bad luck. Nance, a heal-ing woman arrives with her herbs and potions in a bid to help, but paranoia and superstition are strong forces to fight against, making this a tense tale that is skilfully told by the author.
Shirley Jackson – Just An Ordinary Day It would have been the 100th birthday of Shirley Jackson in Dec 2016 and I read an interesting piece about her and her shamefully neglected books. Probably like me you may have not heard of her as an author but as with literary geniuses she is much praised by her peers, people like Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Donna Tartt have all spoken of their indebtedness to her. This book of short stories is a fabulous insight into her work, dark menacing and a wonderful treat! Jacqueline Wilson – Katy Have your dreams ever disappeared in one split second? Because after a dreadful accident Katy may never be able to walk again…Katy Carr is an eccentric 11-year-old who has the tiresome job of caring for her five younger siblings. But after her life changing accident, will they ever recognise her as the boss again? A great read which will keep you hooked all the way through. Reviewer – Sophia Campbell
