Soroptimists celebrate Heswall Soroptimists held their 66th Charter Dinner at Heswall Golf Club. Among the 90 guests were several representatives from other Soroptimist clubs from the Wirral, Cheshire and North Wales region. The toast to Soroptimists International was proposed by the regional president Stella McKay, who highlighted the success of clubs such as Heswall who through their work are able to make a real difference to people’s lives. The guest speaker, Colin Schroeder, also focused on the theme of women bringing about change in the World. Colin, however, chose to develop the theme in the unusual context of his own passionate interest in aeroplanes and World War Two. The amazing facts and the amusing anecdotes he related kept everyone entertained, and despite the formality of the occasion, this was a relaxed and enjoyable evening.

Clive Watkin Partnership grew from a single office in Heswall in 1992 to nine residential sales offices, seven lettings and management offices and a land and new homes department covering Wirral, Liverpool and Sefton. Barnston Primary School Christmas Fair

Festive face painting fun at the fair Lots of fun was had and money raised at Barnston Primary Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas Fair. Organised by the Parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association, there was lots of face painting and hairspraying, tombola, gifts, toys and balloons stalls and raffle prizes. The children had their own enterprising stalls to raise funds, and cake, mulled wine and other refreshments were also sold. Santa and his elves also attended the fair to give gifts to all the good boys and girls of Barnston School.

We love our job helping ‘sad feet’ There are lots of reasons why people don’t have professional foot care. We call them ‘sad feet’ and find they are usually attached to rather lovely people, and with a dose of compassion and expertise, they can be made happier. l Not sure what is involved? First we have a chat about any problems, take a close look at your feet then agree a plan of action. Hard skin/painful corns are removed. Nails are trimmed and filed. Thickened nails are reduced. Winter treasures

JANUARY is difficult for colour in the garden. For inspiration I would visit Ness Botanic Gardens on the Wirral or Dunham Massey Gardens near Altrincham and enjoy the wide variety of colour and interest from flowers, foliage and bark. In mild periods in January the winter heather Erica carnea varieties, will give colour from pink and white flowers. When a few varieties are grown together on a sloping bank, they look spectacular. Although they like a well drained acid soil in sun, they will tolerate slightly alkaline soils. Bark is one of the main delights in winter. I love the red and yellow stems of Cornus or dogwood which contrast well against the dull grey brown of deciduous shrubs. If you have plenty of space and can position it well away from houses, a silver birch, Betula jacquemontii with white bark looks lovely in winter. Plant around it with the red stemmed Cornus alba Eligantissima and yellow to orange stemmed Cornus sanguinea Winter Beauty. Then scatter around clumps of snowdrops, crocuses and early small daffodils for a wonderful winter show from December to March. Lastly, my choice of winter flowers is dominated by the magnificent Hellebore orientalis varieties. These robust plants with leathery leaves (which I cut off in November so you can see the flowers) will flower throughout winter with a show of white, pink and plum purple colours. They will grow in sun and light shade and are good for heavy clay soils but also cope with dry shade and well drained soils. Just leave them in position for a few years and the plant will clump up. They also seed well and you will often find tiny plants growing around the base which you can grow on and spread around the garden. Do beware that the sap from the plant will cause severe vomiting so always wear gloves when handling the plant and wash your hands afterwards. It is best not to grow them if children are around. Work PERSIAN to do in the| garden? Finish pruning shrubs and start | CHINESE | INDIAN | PAKISTAN | MODERN | CONTEMPORARY AFGHAN pruning apples and pear trees. Mulch the soil with organic matter such as compost from your compost bins, well rotted manure or get bags of soil improver from the recycling centre. Put a layer 3 to 4cms deep over any bare soil and the worms will gradually take it down for you

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Gosh 2016 already and we at Linghams hope it will be a great year for you and your families. We have had a wonderful Christmas and have been thrilled by the upsurge in “real” book reading. It seems lots of people are ditching their e-book readers and choosing to buy authentic books once again. We are extremely busy planning another full literary year at Linghams Booksellers and our first event is Gareth Williams and his intriguing look at the reality of the Loch Ness Monster (21st Jan), closely followed by Nisha Katona (29th Jan) whose cook book Pimp my Rice is amazing and any one who has been to her restaurant in Liverpool will know her food is too, and thirdly the ever popular Ann Cleeves with her latest Vera Stanhope The Moth Catcher (9th Feb). January book reviews are always difficult as it is a quiet time in the book trade but I am forgoing the usual diet, healthy eating etc because we always break our resolutions as soon as we make them! THE WIDOW by FIONA BARTON Debut novel from journalist Fiona Barton, which is being published in January and Linghams have been lucky enough to have Fiona accept an invitation to come and talk about her psychological thriller (date to be confirmed). It tells the story about a wife whose husband has been accused of a terrible crime but she chooses to stand by him. And when he dies she tells her side of the story. This is a brilliant story that is horrific and completely plausible tale of a wife who stood behind her man before, during, and after his trial.

This is not something new but is a perennial bestseller here at Linghams. I used to collect snails when I was little and keep them in a little patch of the garden, could never quite understand why they all disappeared the next day. I would have loved this! The Bug Hunter comes with a bug book, a bug catcher and bug pot with a magnified lid, stickers and lots of fabulous stuff all kept together in a handy back pack. So if any of you find any snails in your garden they could be mine…but you can keep them!

I said no diet, healthy eating or life-style books, and this isn’t! Just a wonderful little tome that gives a little background history and quirky information of lots of well known spices and some unknown/unusual ones. I love to cook, one of my favourite things at the moment is roasted broccoli and cauliflower sprinkled with cumin and that’s it, not complicated but the flavour is subtle, warming and the cumin gives these usually bland vegetables lots of oomph (but no “over spicing the cake” please!)”. There are no recipes as such but just a great book to dip in and out of.
