Peter’s pedal power helps local hospice A bike ride from London to Paris has raised £8,000 for Wirral Hospice St John’s. Last summer Peter Lees, a past captain of Heswall Golf Club, completed the 320 miles in just under four days. He was keen to raise awareness for the hospice which was the chosen charity of the club’s lady captain Alice Rogers. Peter said: “The generosity and support from the members and visitors of Heswall Golf Club along with the local community, has helped me raise a fantastic £8000 in sponsorship, I am truly grateful.” The hospice provides free care and support to adult patients with life-limiting illnesses including cancer, heart, liver and kidney disease, respiratory and neurological conditions whilst also providing care and support for families, carers and loved ones. It’s never too late to make a donation, please donate to: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/peterglees Pictured: Michelle Talgam, fund raising development manager at the hospice, golf club chairman Peter Rogers, lady captain Alice Rogers and past captain Peter Lees. 4 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

and use all the space in your home

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors

Why is it important for a will to be witnessed? For a will to be valid it must ordinarily be signed by the testator (the person whose will it is) and the testator’s signature must be witnessed by two or more witnesses present at the same time. If the testator’s signature is not witnessed the will is likely to be invalid. If the will is invalid upon the death of the testator his or her assets may be distributed other than in accordance with his or her wishes.

Having a will, a valid will, ensures that your estate will go to the people you wish it to. We provide a free initial consultation. We discuss your requirements, review any previous Wills and draft the documents. We always personally supervise all signing of wills for our clients. we provide clear and expert advice. Private GP service on offer near Heswall

Learn how to use your computer/tablet or smartphone JANUARY SALE: 10% discount on 3 pre booked sessions

A new Wirral-based private GP service is being launched to offer a fast-track service to beat waiting times for appointments. The service is piloting at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, near Heswall, and is being headed by West Kirby GP Dr Henry Aldwinckle. The 38-year-old doctor, who is from Gayton, will be running regular Tuesday and Saturday private surgeries at Spire Murrayfield. He said: “I work in the NHS but I wanted to offer the choice of a different service that can provide longer appointments and appointment times outside the usual GP hours. “I realise how difficult it can be for busy working people to fit in a visit to their NHS GP on weekdays which can mean many chronic conditions are not being seen soon enough. “We are offering appointments on Saturdays as well as Tuesdays because we appreciate that many people find it hard to get a routine GP appointment at a time to suit them – urgent cases will of course be seen but non-urgent appointments take longer. For more information visit www. spirehealthcare.com/wirral/ Pictured: Dr Henry Aldwinckle treats a patient at his new GP surgery at Spire Murrayfield Hospital.

A little holiday stutter O

ur taxi driver, always reliable and pleasant, requested an earlier pick-up time. Previous good service brings its own rewards. No problemo (we were going to Italy--might as well get into the mood). After all, it was the middle of the night, and sleep was elusive. Apprehensive arrival at airport. Snake-like queue stretches back to the entrance (at this time of the morning !?). All taxi drivers must have had the same idea. Smart uniformed young lady approaches us, and mentions that we could use the on-line computer screen to check in. We wondered why other people did not use it. She said she wondered too--perhaps she was wonder woman. Well, like the man who got run over by a train, we were chuffed to bits. Two “silver surfers” following their noses, and we had checked ourselves in, instead of waiting in the long queue. Our gait, swaggering past the bored waiting mob en route to “Baggage Disposal” would have earned us high points on “Strictly.” We then had the sinking feeling, like the feeling somebody conceding a dubious penalty at Old Trafford must get, when the smirking Check-in clerk informed us that our flight is delayed for two hours, because our plane had not yet arrived from Turkey. No comfort in his remark that “it was a regular occurrence” Another snake-line at “Security”. Do not smile whatever you do ---”or they’ll have yer”. Perhaps a little organ music in the background would be appropriate. I hope the wife’s under wired bra does not set the bleep off again. She just loves being searched. Highlight of her holiday. Shoe-horned into seat, ready, let’s go. Time passes. Nothing happening. “This is your Captain speaking--there will be a slight delay, as there was a fire in Traffic Control last night”. A cynical fellow battery hen remarked that it was the same reason he was delayed a while ago--perhaps it was the same fire--must come under a certain number from “The Excuse Manual”. They say “time fugits” when you are old, but the past two hours in my little space, have not. Beginning to feel hungry. Why didn’t I take up Boots` offer for 3 for 2 when I had the chance? I could have probably sold them on for a huge profit now. “In

A true tale by John D. Fowler

view of the delay, we will be providing you with a small orange drink and a shortbread.” Well, it was a whole one, and anyone who had not eaten since the early hours would welcome it like a lost Legionnaire would welcome a spoonful of water. Muffled voice of Captain --” we have more bad news--because of the bad weather over Italy, Pisa airport is closed, so we will just have to wait until it improves.” “What did he say? What did he say?” the bride enquires. “Bad news I’m afraid, you have to pay for the shortbread”. Strangers talk to each other. The spirit of the War takes over. I wonder if I should start a singsong. Theories are exchanged. The ash cloud gets an airing. We could fly to Rome, and then walk. Babies cry. Never ending queue for the toilet. Claustrophobia kicks in. A number of happy holiday-makers enquire about getting off the plane. The Captain announces sternly. “Nobody is allowed off the plane “Was not Leslie Neilsen in a film like this once? “Oh Captain, my Captain! Why do I feel so trapped? Is this a punishment for something I did in the distant past? Did I forget to pull the chain after an ablutions ceremony, when we had guests? Another two hours pass. Muffled announcements. “What did he say?” What did he say?” They want a volunteer to empty the toilet--- it’s overflowing--- with tears. At last, some good news. We are to receive another shortbread--suck it this time--make it last. The Captain suddenly announces that as his shift is finishing, he is going home and bids a swift farewell. Another suave looking Captain arrives. Hope he has brought his driving license with him, and he can see out of those designer sunglasses. I’ll bet he gets chocolate digestives, whilst we’re only on the shortbreads. Within 20 minutes, after a total of four hours, warming our posteriors, admiring the stunning views of Manchester airport, we take off. The “Big Bird” ascends to the hearty rendition of “We’re all going on a summer holiday”- and that’s just the Cabin Crew.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

IT’S A KIND OF MAGIC AT THE HAZELWELL

Residents at a care home in Heswall enjoyed a ‘magical’ afternoon after award-winning entertainer Ian Edgar paid them a visit. Magician Ian Edgar showed off his many tricks at The Hazelwell, a new ‘all inclusive’, residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Oldfield Road – a free event which was also open to over 65s in the town. Ian’s jaw dropping close up table-to-table and walk around magic which included using cards, coins and objects left many residents with their mouths wide open in amazement. He said: “I like my magic to be as interactive as possible. It was a really fun show and it got everyone laughing. I always find that the residents are much more upbeat after my

show which is the most important thing to me.” The Hazelwell Care Home is a £5.5millionpound development built on the old site of the Cleaver Hospital and its leisure facilities include a home cinema, salon and nail bar, gym, library and a stunning rooftop terrace with views over the River Dee. The Hazelwell Care Home Manager Liza Millington said: “Ian used cards, coins and other objects and it was a very original show that left our residents and members of the public that joined us wondering how on earth he did it all!” For more information about The Hazelwell contact Liza on 0151 342 9654, email info@ thehazelwell.com or visit www.thehazelwell. com

School fair raised £3,000 The Barnston Primary School Christmas Fair was a huge success. There was a real buzz of excitement around school in the run up to the fair as Key Stage 2 children planned and organised their own enterprise stalls to compete for a prize for the class that made the most money. Congratulations to Class 4B who raised £120. All the children’s hard work paid off as their stalls were a big success, generating £500. The rest of the fair, organised by the Parents’ Association, included tombolas, gift and cake stalls, face painting, a raffle, refreshments and a Christmas novelties stall. Santa and his elves were also in attendance, bringing presents for all the good boys and girls that visited the Grotto. The fair raised over £3,000 and the money will go towards building a new classroom and outdoor learning zone.

The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

“Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!”

Repair & Servicing

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering.

Do you need to file a

Tax Return?

Filling in your Self Assessment could be the most stressful thing on your mind at this time of year. Have a read of our suggested approach to your Self Assessment tax return: Are you: l A Company Director? l Self Employed? l Receive income from abroad? l Have untaxed income, for example, interest or rental income? If the answer is yes, then you need to consider completing a return and ensure you consider the following: 1. Are you registered for Self Assessment with HMRC? 2. Do you know your Unique Tax Reference (UTR)? 3. Have you got all the information on your income for the 2015/16 tax year? You will need to collate paperwork such as: Business income and expenses Interest Statements Dividend Vouchers Pension Payment Statement 4. Complete your return. 5. And finally don’t forget to file by 31 January 2017. Filing late will bring you an instant £100 penalty but filing now can mean getting your refund earlier if one is due! You should leave plenty of time to get any help that you might need if you get into difficulties.

It’s a good idea to have an accountant take a look at the return for you. Accountants can get very busy in the run up to the Self Assessment time, so asking early will guarantee that they can allocate time to look at yours.

Foremans offer FREE Self Assessment fee quotes. If you would like to discuss your Self Assessment and get some free advice just call us on 01244 625 500 or email charlotte@foremansllp.com.

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

By Kerry Keight

All of the gang at Linghams hope you had and wonderful Christmas and that 2017 will be everything you want it to be. We have been overwhelmed by our customers’ constant loyalty to the shop during 2016. You have bought the books and attended our wonderful event evenings and today I was talking to my colleagues about what the bookshop means to us. We all love books, (obviously) but it is more than that we have forged friendships with our customers that make you feel more like friends than any-thing else and it is a pleasure to see you come in and give us a friendly smile, I think sometimes we forget that we are actually working because we love being here so much. We have wonderful things planned for 2017 and some great names on the cards so keep your eyes peeled on our notice boards, in the shop, on our website and we can even send you our newsletter, just leave your email address with one of us. Events I can tell you about are 11th Jan – James Haskell (Rugby) and 26th Jan R Lund Asnes – Liverpool Captains with special guest! Sarah Perry – The Essex Serpent Set in Victorian England during the 1870s, recent widow Cora Seaborne moves to an imaginary village in Essex to investigate a mysterious beast that is terrorising the countryside. The beast in question is based on historical fact with the story centred on Cora who has a naturally scientific and questioning mind and her friendship with the local rector. The Essex Serpent is not only a great Victorian gothic drama I have the feeling the mythical creature is symbolic of the relationship between science and faith and the very narrow gap that divides the two. The reviews for the hardback edition were phenomenal and the cover is stunning! Phil Earle – Mind the Gap My father died when I was quite young and one of the things I cannot do how ever hard I try is remember how his voice sounded. He was a giant in my life quite literally as he was almost 6’ 8” but a friend who knew him recently was telling me about the first time she met him and how she screamed when he first said hi to her and other things she remembered about him. It was lovely to get her impressions of my dad and I kind of made them part of my own. When I read the premise of this book Mind the Gap, I thought this is my story! This is essentially a children’s book but that should never stop anyone reading a good book. This is by the author of the popular Bubblewrap Boy about a boy who loses his father and his friend tries to give him back his memories, powerful stuff.

Colin Taylor – Life of Scilly Sergeant I started to read this in hardback earlier this year but lost the book and so I will start it again as it was a fabulously funny feel good story of a man and his mission to keep the mean streets of the Isles of Scilly crime free! You will chuckle heartily about the sometimes daft but true antics of a police sergeant on the Isles of Scilly (please note never the Scilly Isles!). True to form this has been earmarked for TV adaptation and its gentle humour will be perfect for Sunday evening viewing!
