Bright ideas for life after retirement BRIGHTLIFE, the organisation set up to tackle loneliness amongst older people in Cheshire West and Chester, is launching a competition to make over £250,000 available to local people and community groups. The Bright Ideas Competition welcomes individuals and community organisations from across the region to pitch their ideas for projects and activities that could help to reduce the risk of social isolation in over-50s. Successful applicants will win a share of the £250,000 award money to turn their ideas into reality. “The Bright Ideas competition is a great way of making funding accessible to community-minded people and smaller organisations that might not apply through traditional routes,” says Commissioning Manager Adele Gatley, who is working in consultation with Brightlife’s Older People’s Alliance. “We are encouraging applications from any source, regardless of size, and working closely with Chester Voluntary Action to provide tailored packages of business support to applicants, giving them the best possible chance of securing funding for their ideas.” The Bright Ideas competition will be run over four rounds, with each round open for applications for nine weeks. Brightlife is holding a series of free information workshops for anyone interested in applying to the competition, held in various locations throughout Cheshire West and Chester during June and July. DIAGNOSIS of dementia can come as a shock; this could be any type of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia or mixed dementia. It is a worrying and upsetting time for the person affected and for family members. However there is much that can be done in the early stages that can help to make life easier and more enjoyable, both now and in the future. If a person has dementia, it is important that they organise their legal and financial affairs whilst they are still able to do so.

There are a number of things that you can do to plan for your care in the future. z Make sure that your essential documents can be found easily. If your important documents such as Wills or property deeds are stored in a Solicitors or Bank make sure they can easily be obtained.

z You can decide if you would like to choose someone to manage your finances on your behalf if you are unable to in the future, or make decisions relating to your health and welfare.

High drama on the mountains HESWALL Round Tablers experienced the dangers of mountaineering when they took on the incredibly tough Three Peaks Challenge. Simon Sloan, Steve Tasker and Justin Wrench had to tackle the highest highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. They completed the first climb of Ben Nevis in the early hours of the morning before heading down to Scafell Pike in the Lake District, where Justin began to suffer. When they reached Snowdon Justin had what appeared to be a seizure and had to be airlifted to Bangor Hospital. Simon and Steve had planned to abandon the task to be with their friend but they were told by paramedics that he would recover so they continued to the top and eventually completed the challenge with an hour to spare. There was huge joy when Justin was there to meet them at the finish, having been released from hospital. He had suffered with severe dehydration having been ill the previous week. Simon said: “An amazing adventure was had by all, but it was a real eye opener to experience a mountain rescue and appreciate how even well trodden paths can present problems to trained, fit people. The lesson learnt is that nobody should take these mountain walks for granted - our team had all walked Snowdon a lot and expected an easy, gentle up and down, but it turned out to be anything but.” The team raised £1600 for Llanberis Mountain Rescue.

I go to the gym but I’m not seeing results.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I have many clients come to me after years of training in the gym claiming they go three times a week and still aren’t getting the results they wanted. To achieve results, you need three things; 1. Commitment 2. Hard work 3. A good diet. So if you think you’re doing the above why aren’t you getting your dream body. Firstly, commitment doesn’t stop at the gym, commitment is a life change rather than just three hours a week slog. This will mean changing lifestyle habits i.e.; taking the stairs, walking the shops, achieving your 10,000 steps per day etc. In reality you can’t expect out of all the hours in a week if you’re only active for three of these to see changes. Note down 1 change per week you want to do and stick to it! Number 2, hard work, what some people think is hard work others wouldn’t agree on. Hard work to a personal trainer is pushing you beyond your limits, it’s NOT doing ½ hour walk on treadmill, few bicep curls, few crunches, 30 sec plank and then going home. You need to go beyond what you usually do, choosing exercises that you don’t like (as these are usually the ones that you aren’t very good at!) getting your heart rate to about 85% of your max heart rate limit and changing your routines often so your body doesn’t get used to the work outs.

In reality I train people for 30 minute sessions, often they are so fatigued in this time that they can get what they need in only half the time! Meaning less time at a boring gym! Number 3 is a good diet, what you eat is key to your success. Going the gym then coming home to indulge in a takeaway isn’t going to get you where you want to be. People often think that a healthy diet includes fruit and veg and lots of it. Be careful with this as fruit and veg are carbs and although we need these in our diet we don’t need excessive amounts. Clients often choose smoothies thinking they are a healthy option when in fact the amount of sugars in some smoothies are equal to if not more than sugary ȱËËÊ ²½Å¶Ã¿²ÅºÇ¶Ä ²¿µ Äȶ¶ÅÄʇ ÁÅ ·Àà ¹º¸¹ ÁÃÀŶº¿ ·ÀÀµÄʁ ½¶²¿ ´¹º´¼¶¿ʁ ȱĹʁ nuts, eggs, quorn, cook with minimal oils and grill and steam food where ever possible. Our son officially finished secondary education in May, but is still taking exams with only a couple left to go. Then it is the dreaded wait for results and University when all goes to plan! I have to mention that our son’s revision guides have been by the educational publisher CGP and I wish that they had been around when I was taking my exams back in the day, they are, in the vernacular of our youth, “sound”!
