Sea Scout swimmers show otter brilliance Members of 4th Heswall Sea Scouts brought home plenty of silverware in the Royal Navy Sea Scout Swimming Gala, at HMS Raleigh, Plymouth. On the first day they were woken at 5am to compete in the qualifying heats. In the afternoon they took part in activities such as map reading, bridge building and rope skills. The following day was another early start, 5.30am, and after breakfast the Scouts who had qualified got ready for the finals A number of medals were given to the Heswall team for the individual events and they raced in the freestyle relay and won by a hair’s breadth on the final sprint! It was still a big surprise when the team was awarded the Otter Trophy, given to the overall winners which sparked big celebrations and a happy journey home. Adam Newell, Henry Ruddock, Anshul Ramavath, Daniel Clark, James Youngson and Ollie Beenham

FOLLOWING the sad passing of Graham Hurton in November 2015 Heswall Hall Community Trust have renamed one of their function rooms at the Hall in honour of him. The Dee Room will now be called the Hurton Room. Graham made an outstanding contribution to the Trust. He led a team of dedicated volunteers to save Heswall Hall from being closed and enabled this important asset to be transferred to the Community. Graham subsequently became the founder Chairman of Heswall Hall Community Trust who now manage the Hall on behalf of the Community. The Hall has since been featured as a case study in Wirral Council’s 2020 vision as a “shining example of how a vibrant, engaged and dynamic Wirral community can transform an asset”. The Hall is once again a prized community asset with pre-school play schemes, lunch clubs, tea dances and cinema amongst a huge variety of services and activities on offer every week.

Chairman steps down from Heswall business group ABBAS Hussain has stepped down as chairman of the Heswall and District Business Association. Abbas has been a key figure in promoting the town through the HDBA, particularly the Christmas festival, Taste event, car parking campaign, scarecrow festival and many more events throughout the year. He has also been instrumental in raising thousands of pounds for various charities through these events. But he believes that the extra work has taken its toll on his
business, Principal Pets, based on Telegraph Road. Abbas told members of the HDBA: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in organising and participating in all these events to make this year as successful as it has been. “Taking all of the above in to consideration, it is with very few regrets that I tender my resignation. As you can imagine all of the above takes its toll, and I feel that our business is suffering as a consequence.” The Rev Jacky Wise, from the Church of the Good Shepherd, has agreed to be the temporary chairwoman.

Paralympian hero inspires pupils A PARALYMPICS athlete has visited a Wirral school to inspire pupils to live healthy lives. Rhiannon Henry, a Paralympic triathlete, cyclist and swimmer who won medals at the 2004 Athens Paralympics and 2010 Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, was on hand to introduce a week of health and fitness events and to talk to pupils about the importance of their school ethos. Thingwall Primary School promotes behaviour based on what they call the ‘6 R’s’ – Resilient attitudes, Responsible attitudes, Respectful attitudes, Reflective attitudes, Reasoning attitudes and Resourceful attitudes. The project was organised by Sport for Schools, a national project to inspire young people through visits by successful International athletes. Danielle Cronin, Headteacher of Thingwall Primary School said: “Meeting Rhiannon has been a brilliant opportunity for our children to meet a strong role model who has succeeded in her field through determination, a positive attitude and constantly practising her skills and techniques. “It has been wonderful for our children to speak to Rhiannon and find out about her exciting sporting journey as well as being inspired by her resilience and adaptability. Visits from athletes such as Rhiannon are inspirational and I am sure that our children will remember meeting her for many years to come.” Pictured: (from left) Headteacher Danielle Cronin, Rhiannon Henry, pupils from Thingwall Primary School, Cllr Tony Smith, Deputy Headteacher David Bettridge

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
21
ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and
Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LEGAL MATTERS
23
Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors
Wills and Lasting Power of Attorneys We all put great efforts in protecting what we value; our families, our homes, our possessions, but what about protecting our wishes? Many people put off, or do not make a Will because they think their financial affairs are straightforward, but a Will is about far more than financial matters. In a Will you can help those you leave behind with the many difficult decisions they have to face. What to do with sentimental items, what are your funeral wishes, and if you have a young family, who is to care for and be legally responsible for your children? If you have a larger estate, you can also nominate charities to benefit rather than the taxman. A few minutes thinking about these issues and recording your wishes in a valid Will prepared by a Solicitor will ensure that at the worst time for those picking up the pieces, they will have the peace of mind they are doing as you would wish and with your blessing. In a similar vein, we also consider not what happens when we die, but what if you are incapacitated, either as a result of injury or illness, and many find themselves in this position, and it is certainly not exclusive to the older amongst us. Again, much falls upon those around you, and whilst they will no doubt have your best interest at heart, but they will not have the legal right to manage your affairs, and they will have to wrestle with the questions of what would you have wanted, or as happens in far too many cases, the court appoints a social worker or other person who doesn’t know you to act for you. Is this what you would want? 1Such x Will matters can be addressed by preparing a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’. These come in two forms, 1 & Welfare onextoHealth instruct how you would LPA want financial matters dealt with, and the other about how health issues should be addressed. 1 x Property & Finance LPA The instructions you provide can be very specific and will ensure your loved ones know what to do, and haveends the legal authority to do it. We all pay hundreds, if not thousands, every year paying insurance Offer 31st March 2016 premiums for our homes, cars or possessions, but what about our wishes?

Couple make the final cut
It was the end of an era when Stuart and Jean Moore called it a day at Stuart Neville hairdressers. The husband and wife team have decided to retire after nearly 40 years of trading in Heswall. Stuart said: “We have mixed feelings about this but feel it’s time to sail off, literally, into the sunset.” The shop on Milner Road has been closed and the couple hope to lease it out. 28 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

It’d be a crime to miss out! CRIME author Ann Cleeves visited Lingham’s book store to promote her new novel The Moth Catcher. The staff of Linghams got into the spirit of the evening with a crime theme with visitors queuing up to hear her talk about her previous work, including ‘Vera’ and ‘Shetland’. Coffee mornings raise the cash HESWALL Soroptimists have raised over £1,000 for two charities as a result of a series of coffee mornings at members’ homes. They have taken advantage a government initiative UK Aid Match Scheme by organising the events with proceeds going to Water Aid and Mary’s Meals UK. The government pledges to match public donations to charities, which focus on poverty reduction in developing countries The work undertaken by Water Aid is familiar to most people, but Mary’s Meals is less well known. The motto of this Scottish based charity is ‘Feed Our Future’ and its focus is to address the problem of the 59 million children in the World who do not attend school and the many more who go hungry each day. They base their work in schools in developing countries by providing every child who attends with a nutritious meal. Often, this is the only meal a child will receive that day, and so far, Mary’s Meals is feeding over a million children each school day. Three coffee mornings were held in Anne Mckillop’s, Sue Donovan’s (helped by Judith Cooke) and President Jean Schroeder’s homes. Raffles, tombola and nearly new stalls were among the many activities organised at each event and fellow Soroptimists, family members, friends, neighbours, young and old attended these very enjoyable occasions. Altogether, the coffee mornings raised £1,073 for Mary’s Meals and £500 for Water Aid, and, of course when matched pound for pound by the Government this will result in substantial sums.

Neston’s new school building set to open in autumn 2017 PROGRESS on the new building project at Neston High School has taken a landmark step forward with the completion of the traditional ground-breaking ceremony which was arranged to coincide with the 58th anniversary of the opening of the existing school. Present at the ceremony were members of the governing body, the headteacher Steven Dool, members of the senior leadership team together with students. They were joined by special guest David Burkey, who had been present at the opening of the original school in 1958 and was one of the first students through the doors of the newly opened building and appointed as one of the first prefects. Mr Burkey said: “This is a very special day for the school and for the whole of the community; Neston is very fortunate to be benefiting from such a significant investment. I will watch with interest as the new school develops over the next 18 months.” Leading the student body were head girl Tess Clegg and head boy Tom Jones together with the
youngest student in the school Lauren Reid. Representing the governing body were chairman Kevin Mothersdale and Ian Mellor who has been working closely with deputy head Colin Randerson and business manager Tina Phillips on the new build project since its inception almost five years ago. OPPORTUNITY The new school is scheduled to open its doors in September 2017 and during the build phase contractors Morgan Sindall are committed to working in partnership with the school and its students. “We are planning a range of activities to engage with the students.” said project manager Ben Wolstenholme.

Project manager Ben Wolstenholme, governor Ian Mellor, head teacher Steven Dool, deputy head Colin Randerson, business manager Tina Phillips and site manager Steve Rooney. “Site visits for students and teachers, apprenticeship placements, the chance to work alongside trade and professional colleagues or attending visits to construction material manufacturers are all part of how we will ensure that the young people of Neston High will benefit from this great opportunity right on their doorstep.” THREE STOREY The building is designed as a three storey structure with state of the art facilities for all its students including 16 science labs, 13 art and design technology classrooms, drama studio in addition to over 60 other classroom and teaching spaces.
It will also provide sports and fitness facilities including two activity studios and ICT rich areas for library, learning resource centre and sixth form study area. “We are really looking forward to enjoying the increased spaces for non-educational use, such as our new 450 square metre dining room, an outside dining area, an eco-garden and improved parking facilities for staff and visitors,” said Mr Dool. “It will be fantastic watching the new building grow over the next 18 months as we continue to work on the existing site, well away from the construction site.”

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL
By Kerry Keight
January and February are usually our quietest months after the madness of Christmas but we have been very busy with lots of book signings. This coming month is chock full of more amazing events including on 17th March, The Unmumsy Mum a very popular blogger whose events tickets sold out on the day so sorry for all those who were left disappointed, 24th March, Nick Middleton who will be talking about his book An Atlas of Countries that Don’t Exist, fascinating and interesting book, and on the 31st March Caroline Wallace with her new book The Finding of Martha Lost. Rush Oh! – Shirley Barrett This story takes place during one of the harshest whaling seasons ever experienced in New South Wales. Though George Davidson was an actual Master Whaler this is a purely fictional tale but with clever use of newspaper clippings and quirky drawings the story comes alive. It doesn’t hold back on the gruesomeness of whale hunting but it will leave you with some empathy for the whaling community and their struggles. The story is told through the eyes of his eldest daughter who is left to care for her younger siblings, there is a love story element to it but it’s the colourful characters that brings the story to life.
Pax – Sara Pennypacker This is an enthralling tale of the relationship between a boy and an orphan fox cub. The boy’s father decides to enlist when war breaks out and takes the boy to live with his grandfather who is not pleased to have his grandson living with him. The fox is released into the wild and has to learn to fend for itself, while trying to find his way back to the boy. Told in alternating voices the book is a fable on the atrocities of war and the healing quality of love. Set to become an enduring children’s classic.
This month’s Children’s review is by a lovely Linghams regular, Sophia, if you have a budding reader who would like to review a book for us please drop in the review at the shop and it will be displayed in the shop and they will receive 10% of their next book! North Of Nowhere : Liz Kessler Customer Review by Sophia Campbell A brilliant, gripping book about travelling through time, making new friends and discovering untold secrets. This book takes you through the chaotic life of thirteen year old Mia, who has been whisked away to a small, boring village to visit her granddad who has mysteriously disappeared! But does this small, boring village have more to it than meets the eye? Happy Reading!
