and use all the space in your home

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

The Memory of Water Thursday 25th, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th May 7.30pm Three sisters gather for their mother’s funeral. Each has her memories of her childhood and this creates conflict, which is, by turns, angry, desperate, poignant and wildly funny. The situation is deepened by the recurring presence of Vi, the mum, a ghostly vision in flowing taffeta. Although visible to only to one of the sisters, her demand to be understood, rather than buried and forgotten, drives the other sisters as well. A play that is both provocative and hilarious. Your Local Personal Conveyancing Service Sophie Teague, from Campion Solicitors, explains our Conveyancing Service

At Campion Solicitors we understand that moving home can be a very stressful and confusing process. We offer a tailored service with an efficient approach, to guarantee a friendly and personal experience, something sadly lacking from many large law firms today. We are always here to listen to your concerns and provide progress updates. You can phone any of the team at any time and we offer appointments at our office in the centre of Heswall. Rachel and I are part of the dedicated conveyancing team, which maintains traditional values, so you can be sure to speak to the person dealing directly with your transaction. Conveyancers are not just here for when you are moving home, you may need us if you are remortgaging, transferring ownership to a family member or registering your property. We can also deal with conveyancing transactions countrywide. Why should you choose Campion Solicitors? l We offer a friendly and personable service whilst providing professional legal advice l Unlike larger ‘faceless firms’ you will be assigned a member of the team and with assistance of support staff, you will be able to contact us for updates via email or phone. l We have received continuous positive feedback from our Clients expressing they have been extremely satisfied with our service, none have rated our service unsatisfactory to date. l We are the only Solicitors within Heswall to offer free on-site parking l Card facilities are available l Modern office in the centre of Heswall If you feel you would benefit from our personal conveyancing experience, call the team on 0151 342 9021 for a free no obligation quotation.

TRIBUTES TO A ‘TRUE GENTLEMAN’

Death of Tim Cogley TRIBUTES have poured in for Heswall man Tim Cogley who was found dead on Rocky Lane on Sunday 9th April. Mr Cogley was a popular man with people describing him as a ‘true gentleman’ and the ‘nicest guy around’. He was found at around 7.40am on Rocky Lane and taken to hospital but was pronounced dead just over an hour later. Police initially cordoned off the area after initial reports suggested that Mr Cogley’s death may have been ‘suspicious. However, Merseyside Police confirmed that foul play is not suspected: “Initial reports of this incident indicated that the man had suffered serious injuries. “However, the post mortem has since confirmed that there were no serious injuries or evidence found of an assault having taken place.” It is believed that Mr Cogley, who was in his thirties, spent the day before he died with friends watching Caldy Rugby Club. But the circumstances surrounding his death are still not clear at the time of going to press. Dozens of people left messages on his Facebook page with many emotional tributes from family and friends in the town. Rebecca Macaulay: “Heswall will not be the

same without this true gentleman.” Lisa Sanderson: “Such horrendous news, you were the face of Heswall social scene, never without a smile and a very caring guy.” Joanna Reynolds: “I can’t believe it. Genuinely the nicest guy around who would do anything for anyone.” Mark Broadhurst: “Awful news. Was a pleasure to have known him. Always smiling and had time for everyone. He will be missed by many.” Louise Rebecca Casey: “The king of Heswall always and forever.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Care home worker signs up for ‘wild west’ bike challenge A care home worker will swap the Wirral for America when she will take part in an organised bike tour to raise money for a UK armed forces charity. Cath Wagner, 62, a care assistant at The Hazelwell care home, in Oldfield Road, Heswall, and her retired husband Eddie, 60, have volunteered to travel across the pond to support Bike Tour for the Wounded. The charity supports both serving members and veterans of the armed forces whether they are wounded, injured, sick or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Bike Tour for the Wounded gives a serviceman, servicewoman or veteran the opportunity to be taken on an amazing tour of the ‘Wild West’ as a pillion passenger. Cath and Eddie will be taking it in turns on a Harley Davidson motorcycle and will not know who they are taking as a passenger until they meet up with tour organisers. Whoever is not riding the bike will follow in a support car. Members of the charity find the bike tours challenging mentally and physically and extremely beneficial to their rehabilitation process. Bike Tour for the Wounded has so far taken more than 250 servicemen and women to America on the tour. Cath said: “My husband is a keen biker and part of the bike club, Vulcan Riders and has been keen to do the bike tour for a few years. We are both very excited about this trip and to be helping such a worthwhile charity. “We will both be riding the bike at various times throughout the tour and whoever is not riding will be travelling in the support vehicle and offering encouragement to the participants. “We saw this as an excellent cause and a great opportunity to help someone along their rehabilitation journey, whilst raising funds and awareness for the charity. It will be a special trip for all involved.” The bike tour will take place on 20th May and lasts for 10 days. It starts in Nevada and travels through Arizona, New Mexico and finishes in Colorado. The Hazelwell care home manager Liza Millington said: “We are so proud of our colleague and friend, Cath and her husband. ” PIC by DAVID COLBRAN

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.”

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Wirral South MP Alison McGovern

Out and about in Heswall I recently met with the Heswall Society about local issues affecting the area. It is always good to catch up and work together. It was an opportunity to meet their new Chair Steve Anderson. The society do great work on behalf of the Heswall community by bringing issues to the centre of attention. Living in Heswall you are most likely aware of their work but you can find out more about them on their website here www.theheswallsociety.org.uk. I look forward to more meetings with the society in the future. It was founded 60 years ago and brings attention to matters such as planning applications and the local history of the area. They also hold discussion topic events for people. I am also looking forward to visiting the Heswall Rotary Society in the coming weeks to give them a talk about balancing my role as an MP and I thank them for inviting me to come along. It’s always great to meet with local rotary groups and I am look forward to meeting with the Heswall club again. As ever if I can assist you with anything whether it is an issue relating to the Heswall area or a personal case you want to discuss with me then please do get in contact with my office.

BETTER THAN BEING AT HOM

T

he forecast was not good. Winter conditions in March. Not a typical English spring day.

“Oh, you will be all right.” exclaimed the lady wife. “It is better than being at home. You are with your mates, lots of banter and chuckles. Once you have your waterproofs on, you won’t even notice the rain.” The car park at the golf club was unexpectedly full. Hope there are few visitors, as they tend to hold up the play, I mused. As I began unloading my gear, I felt a spot of rain, so as I was early, as usual, I ducked back in the car. It was a short light shower. Perhaps we were going to be lucky. Three of us were going through our usual pre-game routine, fiddling in our golf bags, and launching into a few obligatory warm-up exercises. “Where`s Jim?” A familiar remark. “Oh, you know Jim, has got arriving at the last minute off to a fine art.” With Jim, you didn`t have to bite your lip, you had to chew it. “If I had a goat, he would get it. It`s the same every week—always in a rush, ruins the start.” I exclaimed. Next minute, Fred says he has forgotten something and has to dash back to the car. Tom looks at me with puffed-out cheeks and raised eyebrows. Fred always behaved as if he wasn`t quite sober, which was worrying as he was teetotal. “Anyway,” sighed Tom. ”those four in front look like they are searching for a ball, so we couldn`t drive off even if we were ready.” “Did you see the big guy swing? Looks like a beginner. Going to be a long round this.” I stood on the tee. To my left, a variety of trees, gorse to the right and down the centre a lush green fairway. This is what it is all about. Being at one with nature, out in the fresh air, a time to smell the roses-----better than being at home. Ready to go. The visitors in front are on the green, approximately 300 yards away. It is a tricky Par 4 ---not very long, but a narrow fairway, which has to be found. I have prepared well, checked all my equipment, and played the round in my head the night before. “Good ball, John, straight down the middle.” Latecomer Jim, somebody who would never have gained a PHD in “spreading happiness”, interjected.

“No think the wind caught it, but you may be OK if you haven`t found the fairway bunker.”

Can`t say he lifted my spirits. We dispersed in different directions in pursuit of our balls. Our ability did not lend itself to sociable golf, but we were on our way to another glorious round. My body language was one of dejection as I spied my ball in the fairway bunker. Two swishes later and I`m out. So much for a good start—three shots played and still nowhere near the green. My playing partners were dotted here and there, no doubt cursing their luck or otherwise. Time to use my brain---just aim at the gap between the bunkers, (I talk to myself.) Simple nine iron, executed perfectly makes me feel good. My next shot was a simple pitch over the fringe of grass. Is there such a stroke as a simple pitch for an amateur? All I had to do was to make it land on the green and let it run to the hole, which was approximately 20 feet away. This would leave me with a short putt for a score of six, which under the rules we were playing, would give me a point. At this stage, I had no idea how my partners were scoring as they had all reached the green and were in various forms of readiness to play, giving the nod when it was somebody`s turn. I took my time and pitched onto the green, but was tentative and my ball failed to roll forward on landing. “These greens are slow” someone remarked,” and there is a bit of dampness.” I was left with an 8ft putt, and as I hovered over it I decided it needed a firm hit, based on the old maxim of “never up, never in.” Damn! Too hard! I thought they were slow. It rolled two feet past. I had fallen for that bit of gamesmanship---someone casually remarking that the greens were slow. It is amazing how competitive mates can be, especially on a golf course. The others sank their putts. Is it fast? Is it slow? In practice and in a relaxed mood, it was the type you could tap in with your eyes closed. I left it one inch short. “Unlucky, John, how many?” “No score, no points anyway. Put me down for an eight. What a blooming start!” Just as we were on our way to the second tee, virtually without warning, the heavens opened, and we quickly

sought refuge under some trees as we scrambled for umbrellas and rain gear. It is always awkward trying to put on the protective overtrousers. It must be an age thing, as I nearly always lose my balance. We turned the corner to see the four in front just leaving the second tee. “What have they been doing?” remarked Fred, angrily.”they were well ahead of us.” “Perhaps they are novices at putting on raingear,” said Happy Jim, “It is going to be a long hard slog today, and it`s getting colder.” Ten minutes later, the four of us are searching for my ball in the trees, where I had sliced it off the tee. “Isn`t funny, no matter what head gear you wear in the rain, you always seem to get it dripping down your neck when you bend over to take your shot.” “Never mind,” someone blurted out, “it is better than being at home!” I am not so sure about that. l All names are fictitious

IS BACK PAIN HOLDING ACCORDING to a recent report carried out by The British Pain Society there are ten million chronic pain sufferers in Britain alone which affect not only their social life but interferes with their working life. Back pain costs the UK billions of pounds in health bills, loss of earnings and lost productivity. However many people in the UK who are unable to work due to back pain are not covered by this or by allowances. Instead these sufferers are reliant on their partner or early retirement. Following a recent survey British businesses lose an estimated 4.9 million days from employee absence due to work related back pain. The North East suffers than most, with 2 people every hundred having to cope with the condition. As a result, each affected employee takes 19 days of work which in turn puts the business at stake. GPs tend to refer patients to chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and in some cases suggest surgery. In recent studies carried out by the NHS there has been a significant increase in teenagers suffering with back pain. This age group costs the NHS nearly £4billion per year alone working out at an average of

£8,000 per teenager. Despite this the number of back pain sufferers is still prominent with treatment showing no guarantee of success. Bowen Therapy is an alternative therapy which has slowly but surely been sweeping the nation over the last 20 years.

RELIEF The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free noninvasive complementary therapy which was invented in Australia and introduced to the UK in the 1990’s. Bowen Therapy has a particularly strong record of success in the treatment of back pain. A national study, carried out by The Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA), showed that 95 per cent of back pain sufferers experienced either complete relief or a marked improvement, after a series of no more than three Bowen treatments. It prides itself on being able to trigger the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the changes it requires. With primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard-tissue

manipulation or force is needed or used. Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process. Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of their condition. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment. Short-term (acute) injury may be resolved in one to three Bowen treatments, while long-standing (chronic) conditions may require longer.

A gap of five to ten days is recommended between Bowen sessions; so that the body can process the subtle information it has been given. Once the healing process is underway, the treatment would have taken the relief off your back meaning you can carry out activities in and outside of the workplace which you had on hold. As well as back pain Bowen Therapy also may help with a host of other health issues such as: frozen shoulders, sports injuries, whiplash, migraine, hay fever, asthma, IBS, fertility matters to name but a few.

IT WORKED FOR BEAR! Bear Grylls explains “Bowen Therapy has helped keep my body together despite the continual bashing it takes. It’s a vital support in putting

NG YOU BACK? right a whole range of new aches and pains, making sure that old injuries don’t cause me problems, and helping me fight stress and fatigue.” As with many other alternative therapies the success of a treatment mainly depends on visiting a legitimate, well trained practitioner, who is a member of BTPA (The Bowen Therapy Professional Association). BTPA is the largest UK professional association for qualified Bowen Therapists.

Members of this association are qualified in Anatomy & Physiology and First Aid. They are also fully insured, abide by a strict code of conduct and ethics and are committed to a programme of continuing professional development. l For further information on Bowen Therapy, registered BTPA members in your area, how to become a BTPA member and/or testimonials visit www. bowentherapy.org.uk or call 0844 561 7173

Unit 20 - Providing a bigger, better customer experience for the performance car owner As probably one of the UK’s leading independent VAG Group specialists, Unit 20 has become the last word in first class performance car know-how. Recommendations have come so highly regarded in fact, that some of its customers travel hundreds of miles just for a service. The attention to detail and superior understanding of high performance vehicles are the key to Unit 20’s success according to Martin Adams, owner of Unit 20. “People want quality,” he says, “which isn’t necessarily a main dealer philosophy. We’ve worked on these machines for over a decade – servicing, repairing and tuning high performance vehicles, including Audi RS, R8 and S models, Bentley GT Continentals and Lamborghini models. The simple truth is, we’ve become known for our quality of workmanship and outstanding value for money.” And it shows. Unit 20’s success is very apparent of recent weeks, as Martin and his expert team of technicians turned their hands to something quite different. The mammoth task of moving all the gear from their small busy unit on the Clayhill Industrial Estate in Neston on the Wirral Peninsula, to Fiveways House just a stone’s throw away – increasing Unit 20’s space

from 1,100sq ft to a gargantuan 5,100sq ft. Martin tells us: “Bigger premises were never in the business plan, but as time’s gone on, staying small has become less of an option. Our customer portfolio has grown exponentially and now we owe it to our customers to be able to provide the kind of service they’ve become accustomed to – with a few nice surprises.” The bigger, brand new premises boasts state-of-the-art facilities to ensure only the best equipment is used to service, repair and tune customers’ cars. And for customers, they’ll be welcomed by a new reception area and refreshments lounge. Martin concluded: “We’re all very excited by the move, the new tech, a brighter, bigger space and the start of something bigger. But we’re equally excited to show it all off to our valued customers – old and new – whilst providing them with the continued quality they deserve, in an environment to match.” l To find out more about how Unit 20 can help you, simply call 0151 336 6888. Or pop in for a coffee at:Fiveways House, Liverpool Road, Clayhill Industrial Estate, Neston, Wirral CH64 3RU.

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

MAY - FLOWERS AND FLOUR AND THE BEGINNING OF MY BOOK OBSESSION For the first ten years of my life I lived in Yorkshire and my Dad worked abroad during the week, coming home at the weekends. Saturday Dad would take me and my siblings to get the weekly shopping and included in this would be a trip to the local newsagents that also sold books! Dad would always buy Mum a bunch of flowers and we could have a magazine or a book, yes I would always get a book! Sunday was always a big fanfare of a Sunday Dinner (I’m a Yorkshire lass remember) I’d help Mum make the Yorkshire puddings – using her BeRo Home Recipes book (which I still have) and a fruit cake for tea time. The flowers would be on the table and the Yorkshires would be the “finest ever” according to Dad. We would spend the rest of the day reading and chatting, and having cold meat sandwiches and cake for tea. Very Enid Blyton, how I miss those gentle family times. We have major Author Events going on at Linghams…3rd May – David Baldacci, 10th May – Prof Stephen Jackson (introducing an update of the popular Ingimund’s Saga), 18th May – Milly Johnson and Jane Costello (a taster of June events Edward Docx and Chris Boardman, as ever, contact us at the shop on 0151 342 7290, for further details or come in and say hi!

By Kerry Keight

Bella Bathurst – Sound Bella Bathurst is an interesting writer and deafness is that hidden thing people are generally are unaware of unless you have experienced it as a family or yourself. My mother is deaf and is a prizewinning champion lip reader and as children we learned quickly if we didn’t want mother to know we would speak with our hands over our mouths! There are over 11 million people in the UK with hearing loss, and this book reveals that our relationship with sound, whether hearing impaired or not is far more complex than most of us could ever realise.

Jane Costello – Summer Nights at the Moonlit Hotel Jane Costello is a local lass and a very popular author to boot. Her stories are fantastic summer reads and her latest one does not disappoint. Lauren returns to a favourite hotel, which sits on the shores of Lake Windermere, with a couple of friends to learn how to salsa. Great story with believable characters and beautiful descriptions of the Lake District.

Bobbie Peers – William Wenton and the Luridium Thief A first in a new series of books that is perfect for lovers of Percy Jackson and Alex Rider. William Wenton is fascinated by codes and when he solves the ‘Impossible Puzzle’ he is catapulted into a whirlwind of an adventure with lots of codes, puzzles, robots and plenty of twists and turns.
