ONE of the key independent shops on Heswall’s high street is Linghams book store, a small, locally-owned business battling against the giant supermarkets and internet leviathons. The owners Eleanor and Peter Davies are looking to sell but they are keen to see the business survive, rather than the premises end up as a coffee shop or similar. You can read more in this month’s edition. Elsewhere in the magazine there are pictures from the Heswall Arts Festival, Woolgatherers’ rehearsals, the Wirral Christmas Bazaar, lots of local news and the regular features such as Linghams book reviews, what’s on and a Heswall business directory. The future of Linghams : c Almost four years ago Peter and Eleanor Davies bought Linghams Bookshop in Heswall. They have a lot to be happy about- in their first year as owners they won Northern Independent Bookshop of the Year, and were highly commended for the UK prize. The following year in 2013 they were awarded first place as UK Independent Bookshop of the Year. They would be the first to say that life has not been easy, with competition on all sides from W H Smith, local supermarkets and Amazon, but despite this they have created a fantastic centre, not just a bookshop but a cultural hub. Events including the book club, poetry readings and numerous author evenings create a wonderful atmosphere of enjoyment, conviviality and intellectual stimulation- not to mention the shop’s role as ticket office for the recent Heswall Festival and other local cultural amateur productions. Eleanor has been working at Linghams for the last 14 years and with four married children and five grandchildren under their belts both she and Peter are itching to have more time to spend with the family. They feel that they have re-established the shop and that the time has come for someone younger with fresh ideas to take over the helm. With the outsourcing of the coffee bar to ‘Toast’ and Allan and Emma’s subsequent creation of the beautiful decked area at the front, a new owner would be taking on a wonderfully busy and vibrant going concern. The shop has been re-equipped earlier this year with new computers and a fully electronic till system, and there is plenty of scope for branching out into new areas particularly in non-book stock items. Add to that an incredibly experienced, loyal, helpful and long-serving staff team and you have a great opportunity for a book-loving enthusiast with some money to invest. Peter and Eleanor would be horrified to think that Linghams might become something other than a bookshop and are committed to selling it on as a continuing business. They are open to all enquiries and can give further information on request. 8 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswalllocal.com

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Among the visitors to the Heswall Arts Festival was former Conservative Minister Ann Widdecombe. She was at Heswall Hall being interviewed by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips about her life and her new novel. It was a very lively evening and much enjoyed by all - even if the good people from Linghams, who were on hand to sell copies of her book, were unable to fully agree with Ms Widdecombe’s views on Amazon!

Heswall Arts Festival a resounding success! It was a fantastic start to the Heswall festival with Rob Keely signing his newest book, ‘Childish Spirits’ and some good entertainment outside the shop with boys from Wirral Grammar providing live musical entertainment. In the evening Michael took part in the opening concert at Heswall Hall reading the story of Peter and the Wolf with the Orchestra dellArte.

When science and art meet

H

eswall Hall was the venue for one of the less arty events of the town’s arts festival. A series of science lectures were organised by the Rotary Clubs of West Wirral and Mid Wirral and notably by Dr Keith Foggin. There were four one-hour lectures, the standard of which was quite outstanding with their subjects brought to the ready understanding of all, scientists and nonscientists alike. Interestingly there has been a sustained increase in numbers for this event over the last three years, as evidence of the public’s increasing interest in such science lectures of quality and ready understanding. The two morning lectures were of an environmental nature and given by Professors Jonathan Sharples and Ric William, from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Liverpool. Professor Sharples in his lecture ‘The enormous importance of ocean microbes’ spoke about the multitude of different types of living organisms in the oceans and their nutritional requirements. He showed how the oceans act as a sink for the absorption of carbon dioxide and the part played by microbes in irreversibly locking away the associated carbon. Professor Williams’s lecture was entitled ‘Wetter and warmer: How the ocean affects our changing climate’. He elaborated further the effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide upon climatic temperature and how ocean temperature dramatically defines atmospheric properties.

The first lecture in the afternoon was given by Dr Matteo Borrini, a Principal Lecturer in Forensic Anthropology at Liverpool John Moores University, and was entitled ‘A frozen case: The iceman’s Murder’. This was concerned with investigations of a mummified body discovered in September 1991 on the edge of a glacier high in the Ötztal Alps. Initial investigations of the well-preserved corpse, sometimes known simply as ‘the iceman’ or ötzi, established him to be a 45-year-old man who died approximately 5300 years ago. Dr Borrini presented a fascinating hypothesis, based upon material evidence from the scene, that the death of the iceman may have been of a sacrificial nature. That is, he had been the leader of his community and was now being sacrificially replaced by one who was younger and more able. The afternoon’s second and final science was Prof Robin Dunbar from the Department of Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Oxford and a local Wirral resident who spoke about ‘How many friends does one person need?’ He showed how human social and working groups are at their most efficient group size at around 150 individuals (‘Dunbar’s number’). Left: Prof Jonathan Sharpes and Prof Ric Williams. Top: Dr Matteo Borrini and Mrs Jennifer Schwarz, from the Rotary Club of West Wirral. Above: Prof Robin Dunbar.
