Parking discounts could bring in more customers TRADERS in Heswall have joined forces with Wirral Council to offer discounts on car parking charges for their customers. Organisations who are members of the Heswall and District Business Association (HDBA) are offering individual cashback deals to customers who spend in their shops or on their services having paid to park in Wirral Council ‘Pay and Display’ car parking spaces. The Heswall businesses which have signed up the Parking Refund Scheme to date are Principal Pets, Gusto restaurant, Whitmore and White, Revitalaser, Army and Navy Stores and Eye Design Heswall. Other HDBA members may come onboard at a later date. The scheme officially began in September to coincide with the Heswall Dog Show and the start of the Heswall Festival. Cllr Stuart Whittingham, Wirral Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “It is good to see local businesses coming together and suggesting positive ideas as to how they can work alongside the local authority to offset car parking costs for their customers. By working with traders in this way we are also demonstrating our commitment to delivering on the pledges we have made around helping local businesses to grow over the next five years.” Abbas Hussain, Heswall & District Business Association Chair and Partner in Principal Pets, added: “We are happy to work with Wirral Council on this pilot scheme to try to encourage customers and potential customers to shop in Heswall. We hope that offering customers and potential customers a reduction - in some cases, a full refund – on the fee they have paid to park in Heswall, will bring some of that lost custom back into the village, where they will benefit from the kind of customer service and attention that local, independent businesses do best.”

Triumph owner in national final HESWALL man Paul Griffies and his Triumph TR6 have made the final of the 10th Meguiars Club Showcase; a nationwide competition to find the UK’s most perfect classic cars. Paul is one of 14 finalists whose cars will be shown at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC from 13th to 15th November where the overall winner will be announced by Mike Brewer of Discovery Channel’s Wheeler Dealers on Sunday afternoon. He explains: “I’ve had it since 1988, and I’m only the second owner. I bought it from my uncle.” Paul restored the car fifteen years ago, and has used it sparingly since. “It’s got all the paperwork from day one, and had still done less than 45,000 miles. I’ve been bitten by the bug – not only am I never selling it, it will keep getting better.”

Paul is no stranger to awards, either. “It’s won the TR Register’s Standard TR6 class three times, and was Car of the Show at the Woodvale Show in Southport. I’m not building my hopes up about winning the Showcase because of how good everything else will be. Big run in memory of tragic police officer

A POLICE officer will attempt to run 30 miles across the Wirral in aid of the David Phillips Memorial Fund. Chris Smith will start the run from Heswall police station and finish in Wallasey in memory of PC Phillips who was knocked down and killed while on duty in Wallasey in early October. The run takes place on Saturday 14th November at 10am and Chris is expected to reach the finish around 2pm. Over £160,000 has been raised for the family of PC Phillips who died in the line of duty. Volunteer plea at charity shop An appeal for volunteers has been made for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation shop in Heswall. Volunteer co-ordinator Lorraine Scanlon is hoping that people can spare a few hours a week to help out at the Pensby Road shop. She said: “Our shops stock a variety of goods from bric-a-brac, clothing, furniture and new goods. We had our first major author signing on 6th October with renowned broadcaster and journalist Rosie Millard joining us to launch her new (and very funny) book ‘The Square’, it was a great evening and we still have some signed copies available. The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson This is the long-awaited sequel to ‘Notes from a Small Island ’, which hit our shores (almost) unbelievably 20 years ago! Bryson has revisited the small island to see what, if anything has changed. As you can imagine the wonderfully perceptive Bryson is able to point out all the absurdities of “Britishness” but in a way that makes you chuckle along with his observations. Things have certainly changed in Bill’s adopted home country and he admits he does not wholly recognise the original country from ‘Notes from a Small Island ’ anymore. As a nation it doesn’t hurt to have our idiosyncrasies pointed out especially in such an endearing way and like all countries we are an amalgam of good and bad. Another classic in the making.

Great Big Cuddle by Michael Rosen Former Child Laureate Michael Rosen’s new collection of poems is as expected BRILLIANT with lots of vibrant pictures and wonderfully funny, silly and poignant rhymes. When I read during Linghams Story time (Saturdays at 11am) the stories with a rhythm are always the most popular with the children, who love to second guess what the next word will be. This large book is just perfect to read together I particularly like ‘Oh Dear’ very resonant of Dr Seuss. ‘A Great Big Cuddle’ will definitely become a firm favourite in nurseries and schools. We always need to remember that “there ain’t no app for a parent’s lap”.

Vargic’s Miscellany of Curious Maps’ by Martin Vargic This is a wonderful book and amazingly the artist is still just a teenager. He originally drew a Map of the Internet which became a viral sensation. So the next step was to “mappify” (yes it’s a word) cultural and societal references. I challenge anyone not to be enthralled by the detail that he puts into each map. My particular favourites are the Map of Literature, the Map of Music and The Map of Stereotypes. Vargic in his introduction says that maps help to make sense of our planet and he has definitely succeeded. Be warned you will lose hours pouring over the maps and you will probably need a magnifying glass to see some of the tiny writing on the smaller maps but that is also part of the book’s charm.

What’s on in NOVEMBER Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th November Wirral Bazaar takes place in the Walled Garden Marquee in the grounds of Thornton Manor in Thornton Hough. Food stalls will include: smoked salmon, cheeses, olive oils, cakes, meats, relishes, beer, liqueurs and turkeys available to order for Christmas. There will also be stalls packed with household gifts, clothes and accessories, jewellery, toys, stationery, books, flowers, Christmas decorations and Christmas cards. All proceeds go to North West Cancer Research and over the past 25 years more than £250,000 has been raised for the leading local cancer research charity. Wirral Bazaar chairwoman Jennie Corlett said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Wirral Bazaar and to be bringing it again to our new bigger venue at Thornton Manor.” Opening times: Tuesday 3pm-8.30pm, Wednesday 9.30am-3pm.
