Shop goes crazy for the Blues Noted Everton historian Dr David France was in Heswall to promote copies of his new book along with Blues legends Derek Mountfield and Ronnie Goodlass. ‘Everton Crazy’ is the long-awaited autobiography which provides a portrait of a man who has travelled the equivalent of four times the distance to the moon and back following Everton. It features the intimacy of a Blue peering through the mists of nostalgic romanticism, blind optimism and yearning for the lost Everton of his youth as well as fading hopes for winning the League Cup His tales are fascinating, including hitchhiking to games in the 1960s and flying Concorde to them in the 1990s. Call for more police on the streets A Heswall councillor has called for more police on the streets to tackle a surge in yobbish behaviour. Cllr Andrew Hodson (pictured) said yobs have descended on Heswall, causing street fights, hooliganism, drug taking and vandalism in recent months. Speaking to the Wirral Globe, Cllr Hodson said: “Urban outposts like Heswall are under threat from hooliganism. “The withdrawal of dedicated police officers on the beat in upper and lower Heswall has been noticeable for far too long. “If residents have noticed this vital gap in policing then so have the outside groups of youths, who have chosen to descend on our town in considerable numbers hell-bent on creating trouble.” Merseyside Police say that since they installed a dispersal zone there has been only one report of anti-social behaviour.

SAFETY NOTICE Most fatalities and fires in the home related to electricity can be avoided. Most fuse boards have some degree of overload. The electrical needs of today’s homes has greatly increased from the needs of the home when re-wirable fuses were first installed. Overloaded fuse boards are the leading cause in electrical fires and fatalities. Many people are still relying on old fuse boards as protection against electrocution under faulty conditions. Old fuse boards do not provide adequate protection and do not meet with today’s standards (BS7671 17th edition) or needs. Modern consumer units (fuse boards) have dual RCD (residual current device) protection which detects faulty current and automatically disconnects the electricity supply, preventing fire and electrocution. They are also extremely consumer friendly and remove the need for re-wiring fuses. Nowadays all that’s needed is to simply flick a switch to energise or de-energise a particular circuit.

The way we were Heswall Golf Club
Last month’s piece about improvements to Heswall Golf Club sparked a thought: What did the club look like when it was founded. This picture (top), taken from Yesterday’s Wirral shows the original clubhouse which was burnt down in January 1924 when the two storey building, made from pitch pine, was found alight by a boy who informed the licensee of the Hotel Victoria. He called out Birkenhead Fire Brigade who were able to save the bungalow and farm buildings next to the clubhouse. The estimated damage was £10,000. The Hazelwell, an ‘all inclusive’, residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Oldfield Road, took part in the day which is used to mark the achievements and contributions that older people make to society and the economy. Older People’s Day is celebrated on 1s October to coincide with the UN International Day of Older Persons. Residents at The Hazelwell, a £5.5 million development which opened earlier this summer on the site of the old Cleaver Hospital, enjoyed other fun
events including card games, quizzes and movies in the home cinema room. Local pianist Peter Lord also played a host of familiar tunes in the piano bar with delicious food and refreshments served by head chef Steve Devenport and his team. The event was free to members of the general public with local residents from Heswall dropping in on the day. Liza Millington, care home manager at The Hazelwell, said: “Older People’s Day is all about challenging stereotypes and promoting positive attitudes to ageing. “At The Hazelwell, we wanted to join in with this initiative and help
make a difference by sending the message out there locally that age is just a number. “The residents had a great day and it was good to see some local people from Heswall drop in to join in the celebrations too.” The Hazelwell is also offering anyone over the age of 65 free art therapy classes in October. Freelance artist Nel Brindle will be running regular workshops at the care home throughout the month and you do not need to be an artist or even artistic to join in with the fun. THE ONE BOOK A rare occurrence but I was tidying up at home and found my copy of Mansfield Park by Jane Austen very battered and highly annotated. This book is my ‘One Book which without any doubt changed my life completely. I studied Mansfield Park for A level and it was the book that got me a place at University, where I worked in the campus bookshop (still working in the book trade!), met my best friends AND my husband! I realised that I hadn’t re-read it for over 30 years and so I have read it again and while I acknowledge its part in my life I have to admit it is still not on my list of favourite books! In conjunction I read Grief is the The Thing Feathers by Max Porter. Oh my it was funny and so heartbreakingly accurate in its description of loss and grief . It is very unusual and I am sure it will not be to everyone’s taste but it reads beautifully, like a poem please give it a go! l Linghams Events for November – 16th November – Sabine Durrant, 25th November – Crime Scene Event with authors AD Garrett, Mari Hannah, Helen Pepper (forensics consultant on TV shows Vera and Shetland and Mo Dowdy (retired DI), 30th November – Johnny Herbert former F1 racer (this event will take place at Heswall Hall). Helena Kelly - Jane Austen, The Secret Radical Leading on from my foray into Jane Austen and her part in my life comes this new book that puts Jane firmly into the role of feminist icon. There is a general consensus that she wrote about serious subjects, albeit subtly, with references to things such as slavery (Mansfield Park again), feminism, poverty etc. This book tries to place her “up there” with other feminist role models. I have read lots of biographies of Miss Austen and I cannot wait to read this one and maybe I can re-evaluate my reading of Mansfield Park!
Sabine Durrant – Lie With Me This book was one of those that is initially a slow burner but develops into a good psychological thriller that has some good twists and turns. We have Sabine Durrant coming to the shop for an author event 16th October.
Clare Balding - The Racehorse who Couldn’t Gallop Charlie Bass has always dreamed of owning her own horse and entering the Derby. So when she accidentally buys a horse at auction, she is over the moon. Although the new horse, Noble Warrior looks smart, he causes havoc on the race track! Hilarious, I laughed out loud! When Arthur and Martha Goode find that their pension pot is virtually worthless they decide to take drastic action - by robbing a bank!
