Death of former parish priest The funeral has taken place of Father Terry Boylan, the former Catholic parish priest at Our Lady and St John, in Heswall. Fr Boylan served as the parish priest at St Joseph’s, Birkenhead, from 1989 to 2005 and then at Heswall before retiring last August. He died in the morning of Sunday 6th September at his home in Pensby. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Mass took place at Our Lady’s & St John on 17th September, followed by a Requiem Mass at St Joseph’s, Birkenhead, the next day.

Try a Beacon sandwich! IF you’re shopping in Heswall and you want a bite to eat or a coffee – and fair-trade is your thing – then why not drop into the Beacon. The centre, which is opposite the police station on Telegraph Road, is run by a group of volunteers mainly drawn from the Methodist Church. And they promise a warm welcome! All the profits go to charity and so far they have raised almost £70,000. This has enabled the Beacon to support people at home and abroad who are so much less fortunate. This year they have responded to the Nepal Disaster, the Ebola Appeal and Shelter Box. At home, Helplink, McMillan Nurses and New Beginnings - a small local charity – have all been supported. The Cafe is open during Term-time on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10.30am to 2pm when home-made soup, quiche, sandwiches, cakes etc. are served On Saturdays the cafe open throughout the year 10am to 12noon, when coffee, scones and light refreshments are served. Look out for the famous “Bacon Butty” Saturdays which are served once a month. Heswall Photographic Society HPS is a sociable group of amateur photographers of all ages (over 18 yrs) and abilities. We have a varied programme that includes guest speakers, tutorials and club competitions. We meet at St Peters Centre, Lower Heswall Village, every Friday at 7.45pm. Meetings run from September to May. New members and visitors of all abilities very welcome. New owners for iconic bookshop Linghams Bookshop in Heswall has a new lease of life after new owners, Sue Porter and Mike King, took over recently. The shop, a mainstay of retail life in Heswall, has been trading for more than 20 years and intends to continue for another 20. The new owners took over at the Telegraph Road sthop after Eleanor and Peter Davies decided to sell up. Eleanor and Peter are seeking a well earned rest and retiring to spend more time with their family and grandchildren. They were adamant the shop remain a bookshop and have invested a lot of their time and money in ensuring it did so. Sue said: “Linghams is a special place. When we realised it was available, we jumped at the chance to own it. Helping to run such an important shop and in my own home town too, is a dream come true.” Sue added: “We are very aware of the legacy built by Eleanor and Peter. We want Linghams to become the central hub for all creative and cultural matters locally. Mike & I are avid readers and love a wide range of music. We hope we can bring a fresh approach and new ideas to make things even better and more exciting for all of our customers.” The new owners are not entirely new to the area. Sue was born and bought up on the Wirral and after a short excursion to the Isle of Wight, has returned full of enthusiasm for the new venture. Mike is originally from Cambridge but has spent the last 30 years on the Isle of Wight, travelling all over the world on business.

Heswall traders sa LIFE can be tough for the high street traders – even in relatively affluent towns such as Heswall. The mostly small businesses which make up the vast majority of the shops in the town centre face challenges from all sides with hefty business rates, parking charges, out-of-town retail giants and the phenomenal growth in on-line sales. So, a group of traders have linked arms and are doing their bit to ensure Heswall remains a vibrant shopping and dining experience for many years to come. The Heswall and District Business Association has been going for 20 years but recently it has been sparked into life by Carl Mullins and his successor as chairman Abbas Hussain (pictured), owner of Principal Pets on Telegraph Road. The group have started a loyalty card scheme, offering discounts to customers and they are keen for as many businesses as possible to join. A number of events have been organised, including the Taste of Heswall and a regular farmers’ market each month. This year, they are making a big effort to bring in the Christmas trade, with a lights switch-on event, Christmas market, carol service and an ice rink during the first week of December. Neighbouring towns, such as Neston, have

been organising such showpiece events for several years which have proved popular and brought in plenty of festive trade. For Abbas, these events are crucial to bringing customers into town. He said: “If you look around there are quite a few charity shops and coffee bars which shows that the high street is struggling so we have to do what we can to get people shopping in Heswall. “By raising the profile of the local shops and businesses we can help to revive the town centre. The loyalty card and parking discount schemes are helping. Abbas said: “People will travel to places where there is free parking so we have started a scheme whereby customers can get a full or part refund on their parking if they spend in local shops and restaurants. “For example, we offer 10p off for every £10 spent in the shop, other restaurants will cover the entire cost of the parking ticket if you dine there. “We have got several businesses signed up to the loyalty card scheme where customers can get discounts for shopping locally.” Let’s hope these new initiatives will allow Heswall town centre to flourish in the face of these very 21st century challenges!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Bowen Technique What is it? The Bowen Technique is a remedial, hands-on therapy that is applied using very gentle pressure. The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points of the body to perform Bowen’s unique sets of rolling-type moves which stimulate the muscles and soft tissue of the body. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. It is believed that the Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself and clients report the experience of pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy.

hoW Does it Work? One of the least understood areas of the body is the brain. There are something like 600,000 signals that travel from the brain into the body every second and these in turn come back to the brain with information which is then interpreted and sent back out. In the case of the Bowen move, the brain is unable to do this instantly and needs more information to form a response. As it is, just when the brain is asking for more info, the therapist has left the room, and therefore the brain has to send specific signals to the area in order to gauge a response. If the client is lying down, the immediate response is nearly always

rapid and deep relaxation. The client will also often report that they feel a tingling sensation or warmth in the area just worked. “It felt like your hands were still on me,” is a common comment. We believe this demonstrates that because the move is out of the ordinary, the brain is looking for information about what happened. hoW LittLe is DoNe! One of the more difficult elements to come to terms with is how little is done during a session. In addition, the client may well walk out of the treatment room having felt little or no improvement over and above a sense of relaxation. However, the reactions to Bowen in the days following a treatment can often belie its soft and gentle approach. Stiffness, soreness, headache and feeling like “I’ve been run over by a bus!” are common. All excellent signs, they demonstrate that the brain and body have started the process of repair. This process, when started, is generally rapid and it is not uncommon for even longstanding pain to be reduced or resolved in two or three treatments. Most sports or work-related problems can often be dealt with within the two or three treatments, making Bowen not only good remedial treatment, but cost effective for the client as well.

MiGraiNes Although musculoskeletal problems such as frozen shoulder, back and neck pain account for the majority of conditions brought for Bowen treatment, it can also be helpful with more organic problems. Clients have reported significant improvements with asthma, migraines, irritable bowel, infertility and other reproductive problems. Even hayfever has been brought to Bowen. There are no such things in this life as guarantees

and this can be said of Bowen as well. If the body it is not uncommon for responds to the treatment, then it can and will start even longstanding pain to the process of repair. If it doesn’t respond, then no harm is done. be reduced or resolved in two or three NOTE: Helen Sharp and treatments. Richard Dixon were marriedPLEASE at Our Lady & St John Church,

Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.”

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.
