Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders Thursday 27th, Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October
A comedy and murder mystery by Derek Webb - Agatha Crusty (pronounced Croosty) is a crime novelist. She’s also pretty adept at solving crimes. She gets caught up in a series of murders which seem directed at members of the All Saints Village Hall committee. There are plenty of laughs as the murders begin to pile up but this is also a genuine murder mystery which will tax the little grey cells of the audience. Running man Matt toughs it out A man who suffers from cystic fibrosis is taking on 10 gruelling running events this year. Matt Strange is undertaking the challenge to raise cash and awareness of the incurable condition. The 31-year-old graphic designer has already completed the Port Sunlight 10K, Liverpool Half Marathon and ran up and down Mt Snowdon among others, hopefully finishing the challenge with the Santa Dash in December. Matt said: “I decided to set myself a challenge at the start of the year to complete 10 events over the course of the year to raise as much awareness and money as I possibly could for Cystic Fibrosis, as well as pushing myself as much as I can to prove that just because I live with CF I can push my body to the limits like anybody who doesn’t have it can.” The condition is an inherited disease caused by a faulty gene which controls the movement of salt and water from the body’s cells. A consequence is that the digestive system becomes clogged with mucus which makes breathing and digestion difficult. Matt, who lives in Pensby with wife Emma and their two dogs, hopes to raise around £2,000 over the course of the year for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. With the average life expectancy of a CF sufferer just 35, Matt knows that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. He added: “I currently train around five times a week sometimes twice a day to keep myself healthy and prepare my body for the events although sometimes it can be hard to fit everything in with work and my treatments. “I have always been a determined person and try to inspire other people.” If you would like to sponsor Matt please go to the Just Giving website and follow Matt/ TeamCF or text MSCF85 £5 to 70070.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and
Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Big plans for Heswall’s Christmas festival PREPARATIONS are under way for Heswall’s Christmas festival, following on from the success of last year’s event. Organisers are trying to raise £20,000 through crowdfunding so that the festival can be bigger and better with a wooden Christmas market, outdoor shows, lights, Santa’s grotto and tented village Entitled Heswall ICE Christmas Festival (ICE stands for Interactive, Creative and Educational), it is the brainchild of the Heswall & District Business Association. The funding will also help pay for beautiful lights placed throughout the businesses to give a consistent feel & theme. Justine McLaughlin, from the association, said: “We envisage strategically placed Christmas light sculptures to act as a trail through the village, just under a mile long. Families can take pictures with to enter a competition to win a prize from all shops involved in the event which is then drawn on Christmas and we’ve already had a great interest from local restaurants and businesses for prizes “This year we have planned and just gained council permission to run an extended Christmas event. The big Lights Switch On marks the start of the festival that can bring the magic of Christmas for all the family for an entire weekend.” The weekend will boast, bookable children’s workshops; indoors within shops and outdoors in arenas. Shops and businesses will host wine tastings, Christmas menus tasters, Dickens outdoor and indoor shows, book readings and signings. Justine added: “We have developed a tented village which will host creative and educational workshops which will draw in
families of all ages to return to an area not only once but potentially every day of the Christmas event. These arenas will also host a food court, boutique shops, stalls and fingers crossed a lovely warm mulled wine! “We will have a nativity situated in the main ‘Puddingdale Park’ - (named especially for Christmas) we will also host a Santa’s Grotto and Dog Grotto! “This event can even be extended, the more we can develop and the more help we can receive, as a non for profit business, the better we can build on the ground works already set. As we have taken our time out of our day to day jobs to make this the year that the Heswall & District Business Association can really show what it can achieve we would be honoured to be helped by people who want to help us achieve this dream of our Heswall ICE Christmas! “Changing the high-street for the better. We believe our high streets would benefit dramatically not only from the funding but from the support of people, at the end of the day its people and attitude that drive community and as a committee we are willing to do everything we can to help or at least get our foot in the door for that change.”

LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors
WILL IT AFFECT YOU? FOLLOWING the decision back in June for the UK to leave the European Union, the political landscape may have dramatically changed and placed us into a period of uncertainty, but perhaps this provides the perfect chance for you to assess your own legal position in order to provide a level of certainty over your future and that of those around you. HOUSING
WILLS
The current property market can be confusing with a variety of legal obstacles. If you are looking at purchasing or selling a property at this time but feel unsure as to how to proceed, feel free to drop in to our offices for a no obligation appointment and we’ll guide you through this legal process professionally and efficiently while also offering a friendly service.
With many of our politicians unable to affect the outcome of the recent referendum, perhaps it’s time that you take control of your legal affairs in order to decide how you wish your property to be handled in the event of your death.
POWER OF ATTORNEY During this period of economic uncertainty, it also makes sense to try and establish some form of certainty in your personal affairs. A Lasting Power of Attorney should be considered. This enables you to appoint Attorneys to look after your Financial affairs or Personal Health and Welfare. Through a power of attorney, those closest to you are able to organise your financial and health needs at a time when it can be crucial.
Without a valid will, your property may end up in the hands of those you never intended it to fall to, passing through intestacy and potentially being dealt with contrary to your wishes. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that you execute a valid will that clearly disposes of your assets to those most important to you. Don’t let uncertainty control what matters most to you, organise your legal affairs by ringing to book a no obligation appointment with Campion solicitors on 0151 342 9021
For further information please contact Jackie Campion on 0151 342 9021, email sophie@campionsolicitors.co.uk or ingrid@campionsolicitors.co.uk for a no obligation quote.

Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.
The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering.

And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of.
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!”

And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.
A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.
Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

A care home in Heswall is offering residents and over 65’s in the local area free art therapy classes in October. Freelance artist Nel Brindle will be running regular workshops at The Hazelwell, an ‘all inclusive’, residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Oldfield Road, which opened earlier this summer. The £5.5million-pound development is built on the old site of the Cleaver Hospital and its leisure facilities include a home cinema, salon and nail bar, gym, library and a stunning rooftop terrace with views over the River Dee.
Nel says the art therapy classes are open to all and you do not need to be an artist or even artistic to join in with the fun. She will show how to use a paintbrush correctly and also experiment with clay structures. The art therapy workshops will be run fortnightly in October. Nel said: “I have a strong passion for art and I hope this will be passed on to residents at The Hazelwell, where I will give regular workshops. “Art is all about pleasure. We will try our hand at clay sculptures. Clay is such a wonderful medium to use and great for subtle movements of your joints.
“I’m sure we will have a fantastic time creating masterpieces. I’m really looking forward to starting at The Hazelwell. It’s in such a beautiful location and perfect for painters.” The Hazelwell care home manager Liza Millington said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Nel to The Hazelwell. Many of our residents are looking forward to her workshops and learning new things. The art therapy workshops are all part of the extensive activities programme we run here at The Hazelwell.” There are limited spaces available for local over 65’s so please call Liza on 0151 342 9654 to book in advance.

Neston students had 600 A* and A Grades in total. In terms of A levels, there was an overall increase on points per entry on previous years’ results. Wildlife expert and volunteer picks up Green Flag Award
Wirral’s Dr Hilary Ash has been awarded the Green Flag Award Volunteer of the Year for 2016. Hilary played an instrumental role in the redevelopment of the New Ferry Butterfly Park in the Wirral, which is run completely by volunteers, including Hilary. The park was once under threat and Hilary was one of a number of key players who helped to save this valuable site for wildlife. Working alongside organisations such as Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Wirral Council has led to the regeneration of this urban wildlife gem which is now thriving. She promotes the nature reserve to people of all ages and backgrounds, from Rainbows through to professionals, educating and entertaining in equal measures. Paul Loughnane, Honorary Secretary, New Ferry Butterfly Park, said: “Hilary has been a bedrock of the park from the very beginning and continues to be an inspiration to all our volunteers. Her dedication, environmental knowledge and sound judgement shine through. The surprise presentation of the award at the Park’s annual community BBQ in front of a large assemble of fellow volunteers, visitors and family added greatly in celebrating 21 years of the park being open to the public. “We are all so proud of Hilary’s achievement. This accolade inspires the volunteers to improve the park even further. Do visit us.”

Andrew’s Estates was founded originally as Andrew’s Lets in 2009 by Andrew Smith. It rebranded as Andrew’s Estates in 2011 when it began offering sales and lettings. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle
in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL
By Kerry Keight
SUPER THURSDAY!
There is an anomaly that is peculiar to the Book Trade and it is called (you guessed it) Super Thursday! It happens every year it kind of creeps in without much fanfare in the national news but for the book trade it is the beginning of the countdown to Christmas. This year Super Thursday falls on October 20th and it is the day that the bumper list of “potential” bestsellers for the season are released. This year’s contenders include Jamie Oliver, Julia Donaldson, Ali Smith, Ken Clark and few vloggers that are only known to people of a certain age! Every Christmas without fail a book or books will unexpectedly take everyone by surprise – think Ladybird Books for Grownups and Norwegian Wood. So keep your eyes peeled and check out our shelves as they start to heave with all the new books will shall be displaying. We have some great events coming up in October, starting on 1st Oct with SJ Watson author of Before I Go to Sleep, 5th Oct – Everton Football Greats Evening, 12th Oct – Michelle Paver – author of Dark Matter Jodie Picoult- Small Great Things I received this books a few months ago and it came with no title, no author just with the instruction to read it “without prejudice”. I did not read it, devoured it. It tells the story of Ruth who is a maternity nurse with 20 years experience. On her case load is a new baby and when she goes into to perform routine checks, the parents tell her to get away from their baby. The baby’s parents are white supremacists and Ruth is African American. There is emergency elsewhere in the unit, Ruth is left looking after the nursery and the baby in question goes into distress, she hesitates in performing CPR, the baby dies and Ruth is arrested and charged with murder. Resonant of To Kill a Mocking Bird, I wept over this raw book which is not just about overt racism but the nuances of the subtle intolerances people can and do experience in day to day life. Marie Tourell Soderberg – Hygge Hygge is apparently what makes Denmark the happiest nation on earth. Pronounced Hue-gah it has no literal translation into English but broadly speaking it is the art of finding “cosiness” in your everyday life. The Danes apparently pay very high taxes but Hygge gives them the sense of knowing that they are helping those in the wider community to have access to education and healthcare etc. On a more intimate level Ms Soderberg’s book will help to understand and create your own personal Hygge, for me that would include books, coffee and a quiet house! A lovely book and for those of you who are into Scandi TV the author is an actress, who appeared in the fabulous series 1864. Damon Hill – Watching the Wheels For those of you who are not aware we hosted an event 5th Sept at Thornton Hall Hotel to coincide with the release of Damon Hill’s autobiography. It was a wonderful night it went way beyond our expectations, just amazing. Watching the Wheels is a no-holdsbarred book taking the reader through the loss, grief and upheaval caused by the untimely death of his famous racing driver father Graham Hill, his own experience of being a F1 champion, and his life after retirement. I am not a fan of F1 but this is a tour de force candid, fascinating and ultimately a rewarding book. We still have some signed copies that will be a welcome addition under the Christmas tree!
HESWALL What's on guide OCTOBER 1st-8th October Wirral libraries will be hosting poetry week with a number of different events at libraries across the peninsular. It begins with John Hegley’s ‘Vegetable Tea Party’ at Wallasey Library on Saturday 1st October, 2.30pm. On Tuesday 4th October 6-7.30pm there is an open mic event at West Kirby Library. Come along to read your own Poetry out! All ages welcome. Wednesday 5th October Heswall Flower Club will be welcoming area demonstrator Derek Morgan with his floral interpretations “ Woodland Walks”, 8pm Heswall Hall. The club has a very busy Autumn schedule with classes through to Christmas as well as celebrating its Golden Anniversary. New members or guests always made welcome. Details on our Facebook page or call Lesley 342 9327.
Wednesday 12th October Heswall Hall Cinema presents Eddie the Eagle (PG), from 7.30pm. Feel-good, comedy drama inspired by the true life story of Michael Edwards or ‘Eddie the Eagle’, Britain’s most famous ski jumper. Tickets £5, available from: Linghams Booksellers, Heswall; Gould’s Stationers, Heswall; and Heswall Hall - Tel: 0151 342 2614 (pay by phone – no booking fee) or on the night subject to availability
Friday 14th October The Wirral Wildlife AGM takes place in Room B, Heswall Hall, Heswall, at 7.30pm, followed at 8pm with a talk entitle ‘Disordered Twigs to Even-pleached Hedges’ by Paul Loughnane about hedgerows, hedge laying, local hedge laying matches and the forthcoming national hedge laying competition, which for the first time ever is to be held in Cheshire. All welcome. Admission to talk is £3. www.wirralwildlife.org.uk.
Thursday 27th- Saturday 29th October Woolgatherers of Heswall present Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders, a comedy and murder mystery by Derek Webb, 7.30pm, at Heswall Hall. Agatha Crusty (pronounced Croosty) is a crime novelist. She’s also pretty adept at solving crimes. She gets caught up in a series of murders which seem directed at members of the All Saints Village Hall committee. There are plenty of laughs as the murders begin to pile up but this is also a genuine murder mystery which will tax the little grey cells of the audience. Tickets £8 available from: Linghams Booksellers, Heswall; Masseys Butchers, Heswall; Fringes Hairdresser, Irby; www.ticketswirral.com (booking fee applies) Saturday 28th November St Peter’s Singers, Heswall’s Choral Society, are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. Come and see them perform music by Britten, Haydn, Vivaldi and Handel’s Organ Concerto at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Tickets are available from Lingham’s Booksellers and Lower Village Pharmacy.
