and use all the space in your home
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Law in the real world Jackie Campion talks about the forthcoming ‘Day of Law’ We are hosting a Day of Law at Heswall Hall on 3rd October 2017. We have invited speakers some of whom you may not ordinarily associate with Law, who will give informal talks on interesting aspects of law which are not dealt with by ordinary General Practices. The aim is for the day to be interesting and entertaining! There will be question and answer sessions and we will also provide a goody bag- coffee/tea and cake! Campion Solicitors is a General Practice. That means we offer to our clients expert advice on general areas of law and for most clients we can provide an all round service looking after all their required legal needs. Not so entertaining but certainly a necessity. Our core practices are Wills and Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Conveyancing, Private client and Family Law. We would consider it difficult to offer an entertaining and humorous talk on the law regarding Wills, Conveyancing process or Lasting Powers of Attorney at the event - so we will leave the talks to our more entertaining guests which we hope residents in the community will enjoy. However, we at Campion Solicitors will be there on the day and happy to have a chat about any of your legal needs or just say to hello. We look forward to meeting you there. EVENT DETAILS Tuesday 3rd October 10am -3.30pm Heswall Hall, 111 Telegraph Rd, Heswall. Tickets available on the door

Lucy begins brain tumour treatment Nearly a quarter of a million pounds have been raised for Heswall schoolgirl Lucy Moroney to fund treatment overseas for a brain tumour. The nine-year-old Lucy has Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a terminal and inoperable brain tumour. Her family need to raise £300,000 to receive alternative treatment, called intra-arterial chemotherapy in Mexico. Her aunt, Paula Newman, revealed that Lucy has completed her first round of treatment and is recovering well. Paula said: “Lucy had her blood draw for her immunotherapy treatment and was very happy and giggling going in...even though she was nervous as they put her to sleep to do it! “She was as good as gold as ever and woke up afterwards without a peep. So she got to enjoy a rare treat afterwards, getting most of it on her chin and nose!
“Once she’s had the immunotherapy, she’ll have a short break then will be back for another round of IA. They will perform another MRI scan prior to this and that’s when we’ll find out if there’s been any shrinkage to the tumour, reduced cancer activity and/ or new cell generation.” At the time of writing, £130,000 had been raised via JustGiving, plus £39,000 in private donations and a further £67,000 from fund raising, including £10,000 from Gayton Primary School’s events. In 2012, Lucy’s mother Nicola died from a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 33. Nicola was pregnant at the time with Lucy’s little sister Ruby who was born by caesarean section at 24 weeks. Sadly, Ruby died 14 hours later in her father’s arms. You can keep up-to-date with Lucy and all the fundraising activities on the Pineapple Fund Facebook page or to donate, visit JustGiving and search for ‘lucy-pineapple’. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

Surgeon’s support for African schools
Wirral surgeon Stephen Blair has spent three weeks in Uganda providing health and education services for the local population. Stephen, a varicose vein specialist at Spire Murrayfield, in Barnston, went out to Africa with his wife Christine and daughter Cathy as part of the Rock of Joy charity. They led a party of 30 teens from the Parish of Heswall churches, supporting three schools which provide education for 1,500 children. Julie Watkinson, Director of Spire Murrayfield Hospital, said: “The work that Stephen and his family and the young people do out there is fantastic and it is a great life experience for them. “We are delighted that we’re able to help them carry out this important mission which is life-changing not just for the people of Uganda but also for the young people from the Wirral who go out to help them.” For more on the Rock of Joy Trust go to www.rockofjoy.co.uk

you can easily upgrade your existing loo. They all include an oscillating shower with forward and backwards movement, air purification and a warm air dryer. The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.
A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.
The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering.

get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’
And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of.
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. Wirral care home fires up the BBQ to bring summer to a close Residents, relatives and staff from a Heswall care home bid summer a fond farewell with a special BBQ bash to remember. The Hazelwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home situated in Oldfield Road, decided to make the most of the warm weather with a get-together in its gardens. Steve Devenport, head chef at The Hazelwell, cooked up some delicious locally sourced produce including burgers, sausages and chicken accompanied by some delightful summer salads. Steve, who has been at the care home since it opened last July, was keen to ensure none of the residents missed out and catered for all of their nutritional and dietary requirements. The Hazelwell was recently rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission following an unannounced inspection by the independent regulator of all health and social services in England. The home was also named in the Top 20 Recommended Care Homes in the North West for 2017 by leading UK care home website, carehome.co.uk, with a score of 9.9 out of ten. Liza Millington, care home manager at The Hazelwell, said: “The BBQ was a great success with Steve’s fabulous food a big hit! It was a lovely day and fantastic way to say goodbye to summer and hello to Autumn!” For more information about The Hazelwell contact Liza on 0151 342 9654, email info@ thehazelwell.com or visit www.thehazelwell.com 34 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

SCHOOL 2018 CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents
much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child.

Lego creations earn Steve the top prize STEVE Guinness, Head of Design and Technology at Birkenhead School, in Oxton, is the winner of Lego Masters on Channel 4. The show was touted as the new Bake Off for Lego building and saw eight pairs of Lego enthusiasts whittled down to crown the winning pair, Steve Guinness and Nate Dias, in the final. Steve said: “It has been a dream come true being a part of the competition, being surrounded by likeminded designers and working under the guide of the Vice President of Lego, it’s something I never thought possible. I have always been creative and enjoy bringing my ideas to live through Lego.” In each episode the contestants built creations, including a supersized challenge. In the episodes, Steve and his build partner Nate, excelled and demonstrated their creativity and versatility, creating a Chinese banquet out of bricks in episode one, a Pirate-themed Fun Fair for episode two and in episode three, a host of animals including a lemur, crocodile and a chameleon for the Nature theme. The final saw the pairs listen to a six-year-old’s story and then spend three hours recreating the imaginative tale in a spectacular build. The remaining two teams then had two weeks to go to create a showcase build measuring 2 x 2m. The winning pair, Steve and Nate built an incredible piece showing a life-size figure of a stressed man, working at a desk with a working typewriter, whilst his inner child had escaped and was playing with toys, including a Noah’s Ark with moving animals heading into the Ark and a working Jack-in-the-box, on the floor behind him. Both finalist pairs, Steve and Nate and Nicholas and Coba, will now have their creations exhibited at the company headquarters in Denmark. Steve incorporates Lego into the curriculum and runs robotics as part of the school’s co-curricular programme. 48 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

school building opens After many months of careful planning and much activity, Neston High School’s new school building was ready to receive Year 7 and 12 students at the start of the September term. Staff and students marked the opening of their new facilities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the two youngest students Harry and Annalise and witnessed by the Mayor of Neston, Cllr Pat Kynaston with headteacher Steve Dool, and deputy headteacher Mrs Hudson. Shortly after moving in the new building, contractors will be starting Phase two, which includes the demolition of the old building and replacing it with a new all-weather pitch. Phase two will also bring a new car park and drop-off area which will be a significant improvement with increased spaces and ease of access. In the meantime, there will be special provision for parking out of normal teaching hours when there are events at the school such as the open evening and parents’ evenings. This phase is scheduled to be completed by Easter of 2018 when there will be an official opening. Running concurrently will be a major £3million development at the Neston Recreation Centre which is on the school campus. The Sports Hall is back in operation with the swimming pool, fitness suite and other facilities coming on-line in stages as the project progresses.

CH…CH…CH..CHANGES! (OR CHANNELLING MY INNER BOWIE)
So the days float through my eyes but still the days seem the same Gosh I barely can say it but it is October! The season of major changes, colder, wetter and the beckoning gloom of the impending winter! I start to get more lethargic bending towards hibernation, rather than the hectic toing and froing of the warmer months. It is the time when the concept of Hygge seems more sensible, I get out my quilts and woolly blankets, make more casseroles and spend a fortune on candles! The one joy for me is the pleasure of sitting by a warm firm wrapped in multilayers and reading, reading and more reading! I tend to read more this time of year and as my husband and I are now empty nesters, I will indulge myself even more! I have just read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, I feel like I have read it before or maybe I know the story so well that I think that I have, do you ever feel like this about a book? So as we start to batten down the hatches don’t forget to pay Linghams a visit and choose yourself some wonder books to brighten the gloom! Check out my October reviews for a few ideas! Future Events Thursday, 19th October Rosie Millard; Thursday 9th November Rick Stein.

PER J ANDERSSON - The Amazing Story of the Man you Cycled from India to Europe For Love PK is an untouchable from a small village in eastern India, he is humiliated on a daily basis, forced to sit outside his school while his peers learn and watch people wash themselves if they accidentally touch him. PK is a natural artist and he lands a place at an art school in New Delhi. All his life he has kept a palm leaf bearing an astrologer’s prophecy: “You will marry a girl who is not from the village, not from the district, not even from our country; she will be musical, own a jungle and be born under the sign of the ox.” One evening he meets Lotta a Swedish woman. This is the true story of how a young Indian man armed with nothing more than a few paintbrushes and a second-hand Bike rides across Asia and Europe in search of the woman he loves! Heart-warming and charming.
NIGEL SLATER – The Christmas Chronicles I adore Nigel Slater, I love how he cooks and talks about food in general but also his stories and observations are gentle and calming. As a family we have a Christmas Meal planning meeting as we like to have a different meal every Christmas. Sounds grand but everyone puts in their desires and we yay and nay until we come to a final choice this year will be no exception but it will probably include haggis as our son is now living in Edinburgh! (we like our Christmas meal to be slightly unconventional – I grew up in a family where every year for as long as I can remember for Christmas we had fried Chicken, sweetcorn and salad! This book has a classy cover and its contents will take you through the winter months feeling warm and hygge-fied!
TOVE JANSSON – Finn Family Moomintroll I became aware of the Moomins quite late in my life – I knew they existed and I was mildly aware of a TV programme in my (now distant) young days. But like a lot of people I have become more aware of Scandinavian art, literature, design and hygge. I enjoy reading Scandi crime, watching Scandi crime and eating Daim Bars. The Moomins are a delightful creation by Tove Jansson and this delightful special edition includes all her original art work, a lovely dust jacket even a fold out map – a must for those aged from here to infinity!

Wednesday 4th October Heswall Flower Club will be welcoming Cheshire area demonstrator, Karen Schofield from Preston with her demonstration “ Season to Inspire” at Heswall Hall 8pm. Call Janet 336 5359. Saturday 7th October Shepherds, Nymphs and Fa La Las by Exordium, 1.30pm, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Telegraph Road. This concert will explore the subject of romantic music of the 16th and 17th centuries, based around the madrigal form. They will also perform a number of English folk songs, which complement the overall theme of romance. The programme will contain music by Morley, Holst, Josquin, Stanford.
Friday 13th October Bunny, a play by Jack Thorne, 7pm, at Heswall Hall. A monologue which won the Fringe First award at 2010’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, it’s a gripping, thoughtprovoking and poignant presentation of what it is to be a woman on the cusp of adulthood, and a totally relatable piece for young men and women anywhere. The monologue’s running time is 30 minutes and will be performed by the fantastic actress, Lucy Caswell. Saturday 14th October End of Festival Concert with Orchestre dell’Arte, 7.30pm, at Heswall Hall. Programme includes: Light Cavalry Overture (Von Suppe); Jazz Suite No 1 (Shostakovich); Romeo and Juliet (Prokofiev); Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin). Featuring John Gough – piano. Tickets £9 from Linghams, Heswall and Gould’s, Heswall, also www. eventbrite.co.uk Thursday 26th to Friday 27th October Woolgatherers of Heswall present Murdered to Death, a comedy thriller by Peter Gordon, at Heswall Hall. The play features the inept and bungling Inspector Pratt who battles against all the odds, and his own incompetence, to solve the murder of a stately home’s owner before numerous other guests in the house are dispatched.
