Family Matters Jackie Campion says choosing the right solicitor is so important when going through the trauma of a divorce

Going through a divorce is one of the toughest things that can happen in your life. There are legal issues, financial complications, and of course, intense emotional strains. It is important that the process is not made all the more confusing because of poor, conflicting feedback; you might find this shoddy advice online or hear it from family and friends. We offer an initial FREE 30 minute interview with our experienced and knowledgeable Senior Solicitor Jackie Campion and this is usually enough time to give you guidance and options and help you make decisions. If you then use us to deal with legal matters we provide clear and detailed information regarding your potential costs. Our Jackie Campion has over 25 years dealing with Divorce and Financial matters.

Call Jacqueline Campion for a no obligation discussion and quote.

GARDEN DESIGN & PLANTING PROJECTS EXPERT ADVICE & GARDEN CONSULTANCY GARDEN REJUVENATION & REPLANTING ONGOING QUALITY GARDEN AFTERCARE

ABOUT ME “I’ve always been mad about plants and gardens - I sowed my first packet of marigold seeds in my parents’ garden when I was 4 years old! I’ve got a degree in Horticulture and I’ve worked in a variety of horticultural roles, including a year at Kew Gardens. I set up Tim Does Gardens in 2016 to give my clients in Cheshire, the Wirral and London beautiful gardens that are full of year round colour, fragrance and interest”

“Tim has a real passion and knowledge of gardening and garden design. He’s head and shoulders above another gardener I used and he’s helped me create a beautiful garden” “Tim is reliable, makes excellent recommendations, sticks to budgets and does great work for me. My garden stayed lovely until much later in the year than usual”

FOUR greenbelt areas of Heswall have been earmarked for housing by Wirral Council. The council is releasing 50 undeveloped sites in a bid to meet government housing targets. The opposition Conservatives have blasted the move, claiming that the council is sitting on brownfield sites which should be developed first. In Heswall the areas targeted are land East and West of Pipers Lane, north of Whitehouse Lane, Chester Road in Gayton, and Boathouse Lane in Gayton. Further afield, larger tracts of land around Irby and Thingwall are being released which some have claimed will effectively merge the two villages. Wirral Council has been told to identify land for building 800 homes a year for the next 15 years. The council has taken the Off Boathouse Lane, Gayton decision to spread the load across 14 wards, some containing historical landmarks, fields and woods, although the council has pledged to protect nature conservation interests. Pensby and Thingwall councillor Phillip Brightmore said the proposals will ‘fundamentally change the nature of our community by targeting fields off Pensby Road and removing the cherished green space between Thingwall and Irby’. 

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Early Autumn – September P

lants are in bloom earlier this year due to the dry weather which brings on flowering before the “normal” season.

Colour this autumn comes from Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm, a jolly yellow daisy like flower with a black centre which flowers for weeks if kept watered. They do best in a heavier soil that retains moisture and need to be split and replanted every few years to maintain their flowering. Another flowering perennial that is doing really well this year is the Penstemons. These produce foxglove shaped flowers for a long period from summer to autumn, especially if you dead head them. They have bright green leaves and the flowers come in red, white, all shades of pink and mauve/blue. This year they have performed well in the heat when other plants have wilted. The smaller leaved variety Garnet with dark red flowers is very good for hot weather. If you are looking for colour from shrubs, then the Hydrangeas of all varieties are performing well if kept watered! They like a damper soil but if the leaves wilt, throw a couple of buckets of water on the roots and they should perk up. Although I love the Lacecap varieties, the mophead types are giving bold colour this year as you can see from the photo. Another late flowering shrub is Abelia Grandiflora. This needs a bit of shelter so a windswept site is not ideal. It has small neat glossy green foliage and in autumn has masses of small white scented flowers. Can get to 2m tall if left unpruned but cut it back after flowering or in spring and it will form a neat shrub about 1m tall. Work to do in the garden. Let your pumpkins and squashes harden off in the sun before bringing them in to a cool garage to store. Protect your brassicas with robust netting to avoid pigeons eating them over winter. If the soil is damp enough, perennials can be dug up and split and replanted. Crocosmias need this as after time they become congested and cease to flower well. Replant a few in soil enriched with well rotted manure for a good show next year. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens, Kelsall open on 1st and 2nd September, has 10 acres of gardens to discover including a sculpture trail.

Bathroom

Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering. Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to

get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’

And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

individuals, by assessing your lifestyle and family commitments while providing a unique look. The prices are competitive and with excellent customer service, 100% customer satisfaction and with every aspect of your bathroom completed to the highest quality, what more could you want? Oh, and by the way customers receive a freshly made cup of their favourite coffee, latte, cappuccino or espresso when they visit the showroom! Wirral Wetrooms really do appreciate being part of their community and like to participate in helping with Friends of Irby Library. Their latest venture, I was informed, is a sponsored charity parachute jump, which seven of the team will be undertaking to raise money for the Catterbridge Cancer Charity. THE HOMECOMING I

don’t really know what it was, but there was something familiar about the lady a few places up in the queue.

She had turned sideways a few times and there was something about her profile, the way she held herself. Just like a hot plate on a cooker, I couldn’t put my finger on it. I had stopped to buy a newspaper in a local shop, before I began my little tour of the old neighbourhood, where I was born and brought up. The newsagent’s shop was more crowded than I expected. Must be Lottery day, I thought, seems to be more popular with the poorer people, as this was now considered a deprived area of the city, and as is the want, most were “living on a prayer”. They looked like people you could order out of a catalogue, and before the seven days trial was up, you would send them back. I forwent my newspaper and surreptitiously followed the lady out the shop, after she had been served. I simply had to speak to her. “Excuse me, I hope you don’t think I am being rude but I am revisiting this neighbourhood after nearly 50 years of being away, and I was wondering if you were a local and perhaps knew anything about some of the people I am trying to trace. Something like researching the Family Tree, or in my case the” Old Mates Tree”. “Well, I have lived here most of my life, so I might be able to help you,” she replied warmly, like somebody who welcomed the enquiry. After introducing myself with Christian name only, we moved from the main road into the side street that led to where I used to live. I explained what my mission was, and testing her out, I asked her if she knew the Simpsons (which just happened to be my family). “Oh yes, they lived at number 3 The Villas. Two boys, I knew them well.” She said. THE PASSING YEARS

She obviously didn’t recognise me, but I had left the area at the age of 20, which was 50 years ago, and although there was something about her, probably the eyes, the years had not been kind to her. She looked like she had been dining too well and was an over enthusiastic supporter of the local take-away. Her grey hair and lined face suggested she had “seen things”, but her blue eyes shone with a friendly glow. As looks go, she, no doubt, thought the same about me, although in my head I was still the same boy of

my youth. We are all disillusioned until we catch a glimpse of ourselves in a mirror. Luckily she didn`t ask me to guess her age like elderly people do, for there is nothing more embarrassing. There was certain chemistry between us, like we belonged to a secret society that had experienced things that had disappeared forever. “Happy days!” I exclaimed. “I see the old factory that was near the cinema has been demolished and it looks like a large wasteland. What an eyesore.” “When you think about it, probably the majority of the adult population around here either worked at the factory or in the hospital, and could walk to work. Where have all those jobs gone?” She sighed. “No wonder there is so much unemployment now.” Her memories and sense of humour coincided with mine. We were getting on like a house on fire. “I`m going to take a stroll now to look at the houses. Would you care to join me?” I asked politely. After a short while we stopped on the opposite side of the road, and looked along the row of houses known as The Villas, a misnomer as they were just ordinary terraced houses built after the war. Quite roomy as opposed to the old two up two down. We paused just for a quiet moment of reflection. It is a fact that although we can look at houses and know the people, especially neighbours. We think we know their lives but in reality, behind the facades of the bricks and mortar, we have no idea of their hopes, fears and problems. THE BIG REVEAL I decided that the time was right for me to reveal who I was, referring back to my initial test whether they knew the ‘Simpson’ family. “I remember who lived at number 3. It was the Simpsons, a couple with two boys, with the younger one very handsome and athletic” I exclaimed with a grin. She turned and looked me straight in the eye, and then weighed me up and down, but still no sign of recognition. “Don’t tell me you were that skinny kid who used to kick a tennis ball against the wall for hours and hours. Every time I came around the corner to visit my friend Sylvia, you were there playing football on your own.”

Gayton’s John Fowler takes a trip down memory lane to the halcyon days of the 1950s - but wonders whether he should have stayed at home! still around”. She replied wistfully. We strolled along to the end of the Villas and arrived at what used to be what was called an Urban Dairy on the opposite side of the road to the houses. It looked very dilapidated and rather sad. We moved slowly to the end of the road which came to a T junction.

I couldn`t believe what she was saying. This girl was my first crush and I didn`t even know her now. “Wait a minute, don’t tell me you are Joyce Smith,” I asked hastily. “That was my maiden name.” She replied. “I can’t believe this. All the boys fancied you, and to me you were the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.” “You know, I never thought you even noticed me, you were so wrapped up in your football. I looked to you to “let on” and you used to look away.” She remarked. I noticed that she had made no remark about the way I looked, so obviously I had changed as she had not recognised me. It`s funny how inside you feel you haven`t changed. I thought I would make a joke as she seemed to be embarrassed by how she looked now. “You know you are getting old when your knees buckle and your belt won’t.” I said, pointing at my stomach. SADNESS She told me about how she met a lad she worked with aged 17 and ended up ‘having to get married’, then divorced at 20 with her mum looking after the baby. She moved back to the area 15 years ago and her only child went off to live in Canada. She said: “Mum died five years ago and I now live on my own in the same house I was brought up in, but around here it`s not the same as it used to be. Gone right “down the nick”, with unemployment, druggies, if you know what I mean.” “Of course since my childhood, there have been perhaps two more generations of strangers living in these houses. I take it there is nobody left from my era?” I asked “Funny you should say that. There is only sad old me

“I don’t know whether to visit the old recreation park. I think all the youngsters spent all their time there in our day.” I exclaimed. “A great place, plenty of room for football, cricket, tennis, any sport you care to mention. Everybody used that park.” As we reached a small block of shops we used on a daily basis, especially the chippy and the sweet shop, they were all boarded up. It was quite depressing. “When you think how fortunate we were to be able to walk around the corner in a few minutes and be able to use these small shops.” “Wait till you see the main road. Most of the shops are boarded up and all but two pubs remain. I believe on their Quiz night, the first question is “who are you looking at?” “I suppose the lovely old library is no longer open” I asked. “How did you guess? Too late to take your book back now.” “Progress is a thing of the past. I honestly believe the world is a poorer place now than in the 1950s,” I said GOODBYES We did a circle of the main road, heading back to where I had parked. The experience of meeting Joyce was exciting but hearing all the bad news and seeing the run-down nature of the neighbourhood left me with mixed feelings. Should I have left the memories intact? We said our goodbyes, and I promised I would drop in for a cup of tea one day soon. I knew I wouldn`t. On arriving back at my car, I found my front passenger window had been smashed and a few CDs and my sunglasses had gone. Somehow I wasn`t surprised. I puffed out my cheeks, looked up to the sky, and thought how lucky was I to have been brought up in this area at the time I was, and not living in this awful place today. l

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

By Kerry Keight

HELLO SEPTEMBER…PLEASE BE KIND! Spring is my favourite season and I think Autumn is my next. I love the cooling of the weather that can still be tinged with the warmth of the sun. I am also hoping that the trees will give us a fantastic colour display (I think I am correct in thinking that dry heat transforms chemicals in the leaves that makes the lovely autumn colours). Autumn is always the herald for the busiest time of the year for booksellers and bookshops. We are busy scurrying around planning for C*******S and even now we seeing lots of lovely books coming into the shop already to delight and enhance your life! September is a really busy month in terms of Linghams Events. Here goes! 4th Sept – Lucy Worsley, 13th Sept- Ella Mills Aka Delicioulsy Ella, 17th Sept-Kate Atkinson, 4th Oct-Michael Palin MARCUS ZUSAK – THE BRIDGE OF CLAY For those of you who loved The Book Thief you will have been waiting for this new novel to appear for a very long time 12 years to be precise. Without giving too much away the story revolves around 5 brothers who live together without parents, lots of animals and various obsessions. The first 50 or so pages are difficult to read but once you get used to the narrative you will be whisked away on a rollercoaster of emotions and the Dunbar boys will work their way into your heart. We are very privileged to have an event with Marcus Zusak who will be in conversation with John Boyne (author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas). The event will be at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa on 30th October tickets available in the shop or online.

KIRSTY STONELL WALKER – PRE-RAPHAELITE GIRL GANG

HILARY ROBINSON – SPOOKY FAIRY TALE MIX-UP

I must admit I have a bit of a “thing” about the Pre-Raphaelites and especially about the women who were the muses and models for the movers and shakers of this art movement. This book is an insightful introduction to a group of 50 women that helped shaped this particular era.

I thought Hilary Robinson’s Mixed Up Fairy Tales was fabulous and my friend’s little boy really loved being able to mix up well-known fairy stories and then laughed hysterically when they were read to him in their new format – diversion in the nursery! So these new set of stories with amuse and delight not only kids but parents too!

Choosing a new school in 2019? CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Giving children the skills and strengths to adapt and succeed in an ever-changing world starts at primary school. Then, choosing the right high school or sixth form is so important in the next step of children’s education. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents much more than an Ofsted report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, view the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child. Hopefully our guide will help you on those first, exciting steps of your child’s education journey.
