PM’s praise for inspirational Heswall volunteer An inspirational volunteer who has spent more than 16 years in Heswall dedicating his time to work at an organic farm project helping people with disabilities has had his efforts recognised by the Prime Minister. Dave Nash, who is a full-time father of three as well as a dedicated volunteer at Dale Farm, Heswall, is the latest recipient of a Point of Light award, which recognises outstanding individual volunteers making a positive change in their community and inspiring others. When Dave had a traffic accident aged 20 and broke his back he went to Dale Farm, an organic farm that provides a day service for adults with disabilities or mental health issues to learn life skills, to volunteer as part of his rehabilitation. Dave was so moved by the way the farm changed his life he vowed to give the same experience to others. Sixteen years later Dave has given thousands of hours of time for free, supporting the hundreds of adults who attend the centre and helping them manage the farm as a member of the Dale Farm Committee. With his background in horticulture he uses his knowledge to educate groups of adults about organic farming and in doing so builds their confidence and social skills. Dave is the UK’s 75th Point of Light. The new daily award has been developed in partnership with the hugely successful Points of Light programme in the USA.
The Prime Minister David Cameron said: “When Dave needed support 16 years ago, Dale Farm day centre was there for him. In return he has been a tireless supporter volunteering over 1000 hours to help the centre go from strength to strength, passing on vital life skills to adults with disabilities and mental health issues.” Weather conditions ha Dave said: “Dale Farm provides anThe almost constant ra invaluable service in Wirral and I am the humid conditions h proud to be part of the team. you can easily upgrade your existing loo. They all include an oscillating shower with forward and backwards movement, air purification and a warm air dryer.
The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?
A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply. Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?
A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors
Applying for a Lasting Power of Attorney A LAsting Power of Attorney (LPA) gives another individual the legal authority to look after specific aspects of your financial affairs or health and welfare should you lose the capacity to do so. it’s not just for the elderly; younger people may become incapacitated through accident or illness. If you do not have an LPA in place and later become mentally incapacitated, relatives may face long delays and expense in applying to the Court of Protection. LPAs are designed to be recognised by financial institutions, care homes and local authorities, as well as tax, benefits and pension authorities. They are legal documents . You may consider having one alongside your Will. There are two types of LPA: one that can cover decisions about money matters, known as a property and financial affairs LPA, and one that can cover decisions about healthcare, known as a personal welfare LPA. A key
difference is that a property and financial affairs LPA can be used while someone still has capacity, whereas a personal welfare LPA can only be used once they no longer have capacity. A person administering a property and financial affairs LPA can make decision on things such as buying and selling your property, dealing with your bills, running your bank accounts and investing your money. If they have a personal welfare LPA, they can generally make decisions about where you should live, how you should be treated medically. At Campion solicitors we will give you clear advice and details of a fixed fee. All our initial interviews are free and without obligation to enable you to then make a decision on how to proceed. Call Jackie Campion on 0151 342 9021 for a no obligation meeting.

A LOCAL dance school held its first ever musical show recently – and it turned out to be a huge success! Francesca Marcomini started the Heswallbased Amici School of Dance five years ago, and to celebrate the occasion she decided to stage ‘A Night at the Musicals’ with all the students performing a vast range of dance moves. The students did an amazing job and the parents turned up in force to support the event which raised £250 for the Royal Liverpool Hospital Renal Unit. Said Francesca: “I didn’t think I would get to five years with the recession and everything but, I carried on pushing forward even though it wasn’t easy.
“Taking part in the show were all of my students and they did performances which included ‘Getting to Know You’ from the ‘King and I’ to ‘Puttin on the Ritz’ by Fred Astaire. The age ranges were between 4 to 13 years of age. “Me and my mum made all the costumes and props. My mum was my rock throughout this adventure and I have no idea what I would have done without her! Thanks mum! “I would just like to say a huge thank you to the I.D.T.A for all their help and advice they gave to me when I was starting out five years ago, plus I would just like to say another thank you to my former dance school Wirral Theatre School and its principal Miss Denise Skinner.”

Introducing us to DI Marnie Rome and DS Noah Jake, it is hopefully the first in a series of books about this crime-fighting partnership. Marnie Rome has her own chequered background in which murder plays a part so when she is called in to investigate an attempted murder in a womens’ refuge, she is not entirely uninvolved emotionally. The witnesses are all residents at the refuge and as such are used to living by their wits, and it seems that much of their evidence may be unreliable. DI Rome’s job is to get to the bottom of the case but in the process all kinds of things are brought up from her own past. The last few chapters had me turning pages at high speed, there are several twists and turns before the denouement. A pacey, sharply written crime novel which would translate brilliantly to the TV screen. I feel sure we will hear more of the author.
