GET your binoculars out - for the Wirral Wader Festival, which runs from 8th-10th September. The Dee Estuary is home to so many wading birds so if you fancy learning more about this site of special scientific interest, why not join in. More details can be found in this edition. The end of September also marks the start of the Wirral Arts Festival, which is centred on Heswall. So watch out for the Scarecrow Trail and a special musical launch in the town centre on 30th September. and use all the space in your home

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

Heswall hosts Any Questions HESWALL Hall was pleased to be selected to host a recent live broadcast of BBC Radio 4’s topical discussion programme, Any Questions? The programme was chaired by Ed Stourton and the panellists were Nicky Morgan MP (Conservative), Baroness Shami Chakrabarti (Labour), Stephen Gethins MP (Scottish Nationalist) and Simon Heffer (columnist for the Daily and Sunday Telegraph). A local audience of more than 200 people provided a range of interesting and challenging questions. The topics included Brexit, Charlie Gard, Student Debt, Parliamentary Scrutiny and the Cashless Society. The panellists were on top form and there was a stimulating debate on all the questions asked. The programme had visited Heswall Hall once before in 1974, when there was a hung Parliament and a year before the country voted to join the Common Market. Ed Stourton pointed out the coincidence that on their second visit to the Hall there was a hung Parliament and followed a vote to leave the EU. There was one lady in the audience who had also been present at the 1974 broadcast, when the programme had been hosted by David Jacobs. The entire experience, offered an interesting insight into how the BBC set up their outside radio broadcasts and the impressive technology they use. The audience particularly appreciated the funny and entertaining talk by Paul Beasley, a presenter from BBC Radio Merseyside, whose job it was to warm them up before the show started. Heswall Hall is preparing to host the programme again in another 43 years’ time! Picture courtesy of the BBC

A hundred reasons to be happy Neston High School students, staff and parents are celebrating this morning after another year of continuous improvement in Sixth Form Results. Although students achieved 100 A* & A grades, this was underpinned by solid performances by students also delivering over 270 good passes at Grades A* to C or equivalent. Headteacher Mr Steven Dool said: “We are particularly proud that, while the range of top performers achieving the very top grades have increased, we are equally proud of the high number of students who achieved grades beyond national expectations. “All of our students are unique – they each had been set challenging targets to aim for, and whatever their level of ability the vast majority have exceeded these targets. Key to these fantastic results, as always is the partnership between parents, students and teachers; they all deserve our warmest congratulations and we look forward to hearing about our students’ continued success in the future.”

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Making friends in Pensby Volunteers have been knocking on doors in Pensby as part of a befriending project. For just under a year, volunteers have been taking part in the Great Wirral Door Knock, calling on residents who might feel lonely or isolated, particularly the elderly. Pensby was their latest destination, after similar visits to Eastham, Woodchurch and Rock Ferry racked up 3,230 individual ‘door knocks,’ 821 conversations with residents, and 316 referrals for further help and support. Pensby had been identified as a local ‘isolation hotspot’ – meaning residents have a high risk of being isolated because they are living alone, suffering financial difficulties or have lost

lifelong partners. The three-day visit resulted in a further 1,064 calls, 273 conversations, and 79 referrals for further help. The project will continue as part of a rolling programme of visits. So far it’s been a success, with people going on to join community groups or lunch clubs, finding somewhere to eat Christmas dinner when otherwise they would have been alone, or receiving Christmas hampers. Seven residents also offered to volunteer as befrienders and have been trained by Age UK Wirral and matched to isolated residents to help bring communities and residents together. The project is led by Age UK Wirral in partnership with key organisations who want to engage with older people

and help to improve their lives. Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, Citizens Advice, the Royal British Legion, Magenta Living, Wirral Change and Wirral Council have all played their part. There will be more Great Wirral Door Knocks in the future so keep an eye out for campaigns in your area. Do you feel lonely? The Silver Line is the only free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year on 0800 470 8090. If you would like to volunteer and support future campaigns or would just like some more information about the door knocking campaign, contact Age UK Wirral on 0151 653 4404.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

EARLY AUTUMN 2017 has been an odd year. We had a mild dryish winter, not much spring rain and up to mid July, a dry summer. As a result, many of the later flowering plants have started flowering much earlier. However, there are some plants that will give autumn colour, so here are some recommendations. The dark purple foliage and red flowers of Dahlia, Bishop of Landaff would contrast with the bright yellow flowers of Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm growing to about 75cms. It is one of my favourite plants because the flowers go on for weeks, in some seasons well into October. Both like a moisture retentive but well drained soil. Another long flowering plant are Asters, which can be tall, about 1m or short to 30cms.

They have recently been renamed as Symphyiocrichum but I can’t see gardeners remembering the name! Aster novae belgii Little Pink Beauty grows to about 30cms and has many pink daisy like flowers for weeks. Try Aster frikatii Monch which has lavender pale blue flowers and grows to 1m. Both would look good with the yellow Rudbekia. Sedum spectabile Autumn Joy is a reliable autumn flowering perennial with succulent foliage and flat haeds of dark red flowers loved by bees in autumn. Some perennials will flower again in autumn so maybe your Delphiniums, Roses, some perennial Geraniums and Astrantias will give a second showing provided they have had to first flush of flowers cut off in summer. For pretty flowers under the shade of trees or in other dry

shady spots, try Cyclamen hederifolium. They flower in autumn with the flowers popping up before the leaves as you can see from the photo.. Colour is white and all shades of pink. They grow from corms which start small and over time, will get to saucer size. September and October is a good time to dig up, split and move perennials whilst the soil is damp and plants have time to settle before winter. Also a good time to plant and move evergreen shrubs for the same reason. Plant out runners of strawberry plants or buy new plants. Strawberries start to reduce production after a few years and need replacing for maximum fruit production. If apples are ripe they should come away in the hand if lifted gently. Do not try to pull them off the trees, as that is a sign they are not ripe.

Wirral’s wonderful waders! The third Wirral Wader Festival will take place this September to celebrate the tens of thousands of wading birds that visit Wirral’s unique coastline every year. Wading birds such as knots, dunlins, curlews and bar-tailed godwits feast on the rich mudflats of the Dee estuary and North Wirral shores and can be easily seen from places such as Hoylake promenade. To showcase this natural spectacle, Wirral Coast Partnership has organised a busy programme of events for Wirral Wader Festival on the 8th, 9th and 10th September. Karen Leeming, chairwoman of the Wirral Coast Partnership, said: “Since the Wirral Wader Festival Partnership held the first UK Wader Festival in 2015, it has encouraged a number of other UK coastal areas to follow suit and we think that this is a fantastic achievement. “The entire Wirral coastline has protection as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the internationally important numbers of wading birds that live here through autumn and winter. As a result, it is the focus of conservation efforts from a number of environmental organisations, local authority departments and private sector organisations who all contribute to the event. “The Festival starts with a talk by the naturalist and environmentalist Iolo Williams, also a renowned presenter on the BBC’s Springwatch and Autumnwatch, on the Friday evening and then a full weekend of events held at Hoylake and West Kirby. “Everyone is welcome from keen bird watchers

to people who have never looked through a telescope but who would like to learn a bit more about local wildlife – we have lots of people to help identify what you are looking at, and we have a lot of activities for children and the young at heart.” Wirral was approached to hold the first event of its kind in the UK in 2015 by Rick and Elis Simpson of Wader Quest. They came on a visit to view the remarkable efforts of the Dee Estuary Voluntary Wardens (DEVW) who protect the thousands of birds roosting on West Kirby and Hoylake beaches at high tide. Wirral Wader Festival was created by DEVW with Wirral Council’s Coastal Rangers, Cheshire Wildlife Trust, the RSPB and Wader Quest. There will be high tide watches to marvel at the knot and dunlin roosts on Hoylake beach and at Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s Red Rocks nature reserve. At West Kirby there will be live footage beamed direct from Little Eye, showing off the oystercatchers and curlews up close. Cheshire Wildlife Trust will be holding guided walks around the Red Rocks SSSI nature reserve and hosting the children’s activities. Wirral Rangers will be guiding a walk to Hilbre Island. For full details of the events and activities during the festival, visit www.facebook.com/ wirralwaderfest, or wirralwaderfestival.blogspot. co.uk. Most activities on Saturday and Sunday are free but some have a small charge. Seats for the Iolo Williams talk cost £15 and must be pre-booked on: www.cheshirewildlifetrust.org. uk/whats-on

Care home residents go wild at art exhibition! Residents from a Heswalll care home went wild for art at a garden centre. Staff from The Hazelwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Heswall, took residents to see the Exhibition of Wildlife Art at Gordale. The three-day show on Chester High Road featured some talented wildlife artists and was introduced following the closure of the successful National Exhibition Wildlife Art which ran for 25 years. The aim of the exhibition was to promote and display outstanding examples of wildlife art from both professional and amateur artists and make it accessible to all. Over 50 selected artists had their work on display and residents were able to browse the stands and panels, talk to the artists in person, and watch them demonstrate their skills live.

The outing to the exhibition was part of the activities programme organised by care home staff at The Hazelwell. Liza Millington, care home manager at The Hazelwell, said: “The aim of this activity was to give an opportunity to our residents to engage and communicate with the wider community and provide a stimulating activity to get them inspired and prompt a creative discussion. “Just as the body needs physical exercise to keep fit, the brain needs mental stimulus to stay active too. There were some remarkable pieces of art at the Exhibition of Wildlife Art and our residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves. For more information about The Hazelwell contact Liza on 0151 342 9654, email info@ thehazelwell.com or visit www.thehazelwell. com

Householders asked to recycle food waste A NEW plan to increase recycling in Wirral is set to be rolled out. Wirral Council is investigating bringing in a new food waste collection service, which would see every resident receive a new, small bin to store food waste – which would then be collected every week. The move was proposed in an effort to increase recycling rates in the borough to 50% of all household waste. While no final decision on the new service has been reached, new council environment lead Cllr Phil Brightmore says recycling needs to stay at the top of the agenda, and has put forward an interim plan to help residents recycle more.

He said: “Since coming into this post a few months ago, I have been reviewing the consultation feedback and talking to residents all across the borough. “It’s absolutely clear to me that Wirral residents care deeply about the local environment and want to recycle more. It’s our job to help them and we must do better. “Over the coming weeks we will be launching a new programme to provide advice, encourage recycling and make sure our residents have all the tools and information they need to dispose of their household waste in an environmentally friendly way.”

Author cooks up a storm Author and food writer Nisha Katona was in Heswall last month to plug her latest book The Spice Tree. She is the founder of Mowgli Street Food, has taught Indian cookery for over 10 years and has a series of youtube video tutorials that have a worldwide following. Nisha entertained fans and signed copies of the new book when she met them at Lingham’s book shop. 44 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

SCHOOL 2018 CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child. 46 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL ‘A happy school consistently producing confident and considerate individuals as well as top results’ Good Schools Guide 2017

Birkenhead School is one of the UK’s leading independent schools located in the heart of Oxton, Wirral. The School offers an all through education for girls and boys from nursery at 3 months through to sixth form and educates in the broadest sense, instilling values and qualities to set pupils apart from their peers. Smaller class sizes, investment in pastoral care and a close school community across the year groups means teachers know what makes every pupil ‘tick’.

‘Attending an independent school adds the equivalent of two additional years of schooling by age 16’ HMC (Professional Association of World’s Leading Independent Schools)

Teaching staff look to ignite pupils’ passions and interests by going beyond the national curriculum and offering outstanding opportunities across music, sports, arts and academia. Visits to NASA in Houston, cricket tours to Barbados, talks from high-profile speakers such as Tim Peake, Astronaut and Sir Tony Robinson, as well as clubs ranging from astronomy club to uni-cycling are just some of the many opportunities offered recently to pupils. Prospective parents and pupils are warmly invited to visit the School and can contact 0151 652 4014 to find out about forthcoming Open Days and Taster Days and what difference an independent education could offer their son or daughter.

Top independent girls’ school launches more Wirral bus routes A top independent girls’ school in Chester will be introducing more capacity on its bus routes from Wirral in September. Three minibuses will run from Wirral to The Queen’s School in Chester before and after school, enabling families who previously would have had to drive or catch public buses easy access to the school. Currently the school operates two Wirral buses which are extremely popular. From September three buses will pick-up and drop off from West Kirby, Thurstaston, Heswall, Willaston, Puddington, Ledsham and Great Sutton. The school caters for girls aged 4-18 at its Lower and Senior School and can boast some of the best academic results in the county. Bursary places are available for Year 7 entry. Headmistress Mrs Clark said: “Our research suggests there is a demand in the area for an

academic girls’ school like ours which goes the extra mile to nurture its pupils. “Girls thrive at Queen’s because we value them as individuals, inspiring, supporting and challenging them to excel. “We very much hope the extra capacity will enable more families from the Wirral area to enjoy the unique and much-valued education we offer here and I look forward to welcoming them at our up-and-coming open events.” Miss Lyndsay Hilton, who will take the helm as Headmistress of The Queen’s School from January 2018, will also be attendance at the Senior School Open Morning. l Senior School Open Morning Saturday 14 October l Sixth Form Open Evening Thursday 19 October l Lower School Open Morning (Infant and Junior entry) Saturday 4 November

Abbey Gate College celebrates 40 Years with special gala concert In July, Chester based independent school Abbey Gate College hosted a special Gala Concert as it marked its 40 years anniversary. As part of the concert, 75 past choir members joined the current choir producing a spectacular sound of 140 voices. The concert was directed by Mr Stewart Smith (right, above) who is retiring after 39 and a half years as Director of Music. During this time, he has led a thriving music department with many of his former pupils progressing to careers in opera, music production and cathedral music. At the concert, the audience also enjoyed performances from the Infant and Junior School choir, instrumentalists, and vocalists. The choir has sung in most English cathedrals including London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, where they will return to in April 2018. The choir has also toured to various locations including France, Belgium (Menin Gate), St Mark’s Venice, Germany, Italy, Holland, Denmark and the west and east coast of the USA on two occasions. The concert also welcomed the new Head of Music, James Andrews (right, below) who, as well as being a former pupil of the College, is an ex-Head Chorister of Chester Cathedral and a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire. He begins his post in September 2017. For videos of the night’s performances go to the Abbey Gate College YouTube channel. 52 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

AUTUMN, SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS…OH AND LIBRARIES! I love libraries. Last month a family came into the shop and their son of about 6 or 7 asked “is this a library?” “no” said Dad “it’s a bookshop, it’s like a library but different”! I wanted to hear his explanation of the differences but they were out of earshot! It was my primary school’s library that was the starting point of my love affair with books. Soon I would take myself off to the local library on a Saturday and choose SIX books and read them then go back and get more. Later I discovered bookshops and pocket money was saved to buy my own books that I could keep (hopefully that was the answer Dad gave to Son)! Recently we visited Gladstone’s Library it is such a lovely location and an amazing building – we were given a “glimpse” tour, really frustrating as that was all it was, silence and no touching the books! The new Storyhouse in Chester is a fantastic new venture that houses Chester Library wonderful use of the old Art Deco cinema building. I love Autumn too, it’s chilly warmth and colour before we head off to winter. This Autumn Linghams is zinging with great author events, ROBERT WEBB 1st Sept, SALLEY VICKERS 25th Sept and ROBERT HARRIS 26th Sept.

By Kerry Keight

Robert Harris – Munich As Chamberlain and Hitler travelled towards each other for the historic meeting that would result in the Munich Agreement and the Famous “Peace in our Time” announcement by Chamberlain, Robert Harris gives us two other characters Hugh Legat (Private Secretary) and German diplomat Paul Hartmann who were great friends at Oxford, destined to be brought together again but this time the future of Europe hangs in the balance, what has to give friendship, family, your country or your conscience? (Robert Harris event will take place at Thornton Manor 26th Sept).

Adam Rutherford – A Brief History of Everyone who Ever Lived The hardback was longlisted for the Wellcome Prize last year and now is available in paperback. Fascinating insight Into human history as told by our genomes and DNA. I love that fact that my family started from a specific somewhere and that is was a journey of mistakes, trials and hunter/ gathering that doesn’t involve a trip to Tesco! Adam Rutherford says that the human genome shouldn’t be read as an instruction manual but an epic poem, I’ll go with that! Did you know that all Europeans would only have to go back 600 years to find a common ancestor, fascinating stuff. Noisy Crow Book (illustrated by Marion Billet – Birds My great nephew Arthur will be 1 this month and he loves nature and noise so I thought this would be perfect for him! The bird sounds are pretty accurate and comes with an off on switch, it is a great little book that is part of a series, I know he will love it!
