WELL done to Heswall’s Alan Swift who has received a prestigious award for his work in hair care. The research chemist, who is something of an unheralded figure, went to New York to pick up the award. You can read more in this edition. Elsewhere, you can read about two Heswall authors, the Inner Wheel showing ‘support’ for a bra campaign, an update on Dawstone Park and lots of local news and the regular features such as Linghams book reviews, what’s on and a Heswall business directory. Remember to say you saw the advert in the Heswall Local magazine!

Big turn-out for meeting to set up Friends of Dawstone Park group THE Heswall Society organised an open meeting to discuss the formation of a Friends of Dawstone Park Group at St Peter’s School. On a very cold evening 50 people turned up to hear an introduction by Fergus Adams from the Wirral South Wirral Constituency Committee. He explained how a friends group could raise the profile of Dawstone Park and achieve Green Flag status with all the benefits that entailed. Martin Harrison, from the Friends of Ashton Park in West Kirby, then explained how their friends group have worked with the council to vastly improve their park and involve the local community both by working together and making the park more attractive. Les Rowlands, Deputy Mayor, spoke of the financial pressures faced by Wirral Borough Council and how a Friends Groups, working with the council, could achieve a substantial improvement to the park. There were many questions from the floor before Dennis Clegg, chairman of the Heswall Society, called for volunteers to form a Steering Group with the intention of forming a Friends of Dawstone Park Group. Eight people volunteered straight away. Dawstone Park is a major asset to Heswall much enjoyed by children and their parents who appreciate its compact size and the secure boundaries separating it from the surrounding roads. 4 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswalllocal.com

R Alan Swift has just returned from New York having been presented with the Maison G De Navarre award—the most prestigious award from the society of American Cosmetic Chemists.
This is the third time that the American society have honoured Alan; in 1975 he received their literature award and in 2000 an award for the best paper on hair technology. Wheelers show support for bag a bra campaign! Members of West Wirral Inner Wheel have been doing just that. The money raised per kilo from the bra collection is donated to a breast cancer charity where they will generate much needed funds for cancer research to improve detection and increase survival. After the weigh-in, they will then go to West Africa where bras are too expensive to produce but where they are greatly valued as they help to give women self-esteem not to say vital support. So it’s win-win as the project keeps textiles out of landfill, helps small businesses in Africa and generates funds for ground-breaking research. All women seem to have bras in the drawer which are too small, too large or just a poor fit so it is easy to collect enough to make a difference. If you belong to a women’s organisation why not give it a try? Community funding for Viking sign IRBY, Thurstaston and Pensby Amenity Society are using a council grant to provide an interpretive information board in the car park of the Basset Hound pub, Thingwall. It will highlight the significance of the site, which is near the old historic Viking parliament at Cross Hill, Thingwall. The initiative is being supported by renowned Viking history expert Professor Stephen Harding of Nottingham University. The council is currently deciding on the next round of funding made by the made by Wirral West Constituency Committee. Last year a total of £35,000 was spent on 30 community projects.

A Nurse’s Story Demanding career? Or just overwhelmed with tedious chores? We can set you FREE
New opening times Monday - Friday 8am-6pm Sat 10am-1pm
by George Birks As to the staff, both nurses and docctors were treating patientts with a mixture of prejud dice, ill-understood physiccal interventions such aas shock therapy (in alll its forms), and sedattion. Wee all conducted our care within the prov visions of the Men ntal Health Acts of 195 59 and 1983, but thee older nurses and do octors had been traained postwar. Doctors generally y expected, and got, deference d f ffrom patients. i Th They got iit from nurses too, though nurses could be a two-faced lot. Maybe it was the older nurses’ enduring in luence that made psychiatric nurses enforce compliance from their patients. But from the 1960s, protest against the big forbidding madhouses became more frequent and vociferous. By the 1980s, there was a storm of coruscating reports and bitterly convincing accounts of mistreatment. So a new NHS mental health care policy was developed: Care in the Community. The old institutions would close down, and their inhabitants would be parented, so to speak, by the social security system and visits from communitybased psychiatric nurses. This was not only cheaper (it got rid of those old asylums), but it also re lected liberal views of mental disorder as something that, with love and responsibility, could be lessened, while the mentally disadvantaged would have a better quality of life. Care in the Community got rid of some of the staff too, but many carried their old behavior into new jobs. This book relates my experiences between 1969 and 1989. I would like to think that psychiatric care is better now, but I don’t. I think it’s just different.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and
$ODQ LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors
Maternity and Paternity leave N the news recently there have been promises made by the Labour Party that if they are successful in the next election they will change legislation to increase the time of Paternity leave and amount of pay for new fathers if they are successful in the next election. The current law offers protection to people who
need time off work for family-related reasons. Therefore there are times when your employer should allow you to have time away from work to be with your children. We can advise on taking up these rights without suffering problems at work. In addition to paid Maternity and Parental Leave there are other rights available to help the family. Each parent can in addition have unpaid parental leave. Parents can formally apply to vary their hours of work to assist with their family arrangements using the Flexible Work Legislation Time off for ante-natal appointments Shared parental leave where a mother may curtail her entitlement to statutory maternity leave so the child’s other parent may share the balance of the leave or pay. This is a very brief summary of the rights available. People take time off from their jobs in all sorts of situations - whatever your reason for needing to take a period of leave, there’s likely to be a facet of employment law which covers it. We can advise on taking up these rights without suffering problems at work.

Fun game - or a good walk spoiled? LOCAL author John Fowler has just published his fifth book, and this time he writes about one of Wirral’s favourite pastimes - golf. John, who has lived in Gayton for the past 35 years, has previously covered growing up in Liverpool, working in Insurance, and football. This time, in his book Golf is Fun (or is it?), he has gathered together a unique collection of 24 short stories that will touch a nerve with most amateur golfers. All the characters and situations are fictitious, and just reflect John’s vivid imagination. John said: “I think short stories appeal to the reader, because these types of books can be picked up and put down, without having to memorise the plot. It can be described as the ideal bedside companion.” When John retired from his job in the Insurance Industry in 2009, the free time gave him the opportunity to pursue two of his great interests i.e. Golf and writing. Having had four books published to date, he recently had some articles published in the national magazine, Golf Monthly and the North West newspaper, Golfers Local, and this inspired him to write his book, which is a collection of short stories. It is available as an E book on Amazon.
Pensioner Douglas becomes a published author A HESWALL L pensioner has just published a book of short stories. Douglas Griffiths, who is 81, has written the tales of an old, fictional Birkenhead character called Uncle Ned. These were read out on BBC Radio Merseyside’s ‘Write Now’ programme some years ago and the new publication was the subject of an interview on the Sean Styles programme in January Uncle Ned is a character. Well-intentioned but accident-prone, he spends his time helping his motley collection of friends in their daily endeavours, propping up the bar at his local pub, the ‘Boilermakers Arms’, blowing his money in the betting shop, and avoiding the wrath of his long-suffering wife at home. The stories aim to warm the heart of anyone who feels a fond nostalgia for the lives of ordinary folk and their homespun humour in a Merseyside now all-but gone. It is available from Appin Press, part of Countyvise/ Birkenhead Press. Visit www.countyvise.co.uk for details.

Massive redevelopment at Neston High School THERE is much rejoicing at Neston High School with the announcement that plans for a multi-million pound development have been given the go-ahead. Many local residents will be aware of the ambitious plans to rebuild Neston High School. These plans took a huge leap forward last month with the granting of planning approval with a unanimous vote in favour by Cheshire West & Chester Strategic Planning Committee. Final contracts for the build are due to be signed in March, and work will start on site towards the end of this year. Head teacher Steve Dool said: “This important step is the culmination of many years of work to ensure the young people of this area receive the very best opportunities to enable them to prepare for high quality destinations for generations to come.” The new school will be built on land already owned by the school, well away from the current school buildings, some of which date back to the original opening date of January 1958. Mr Dool added: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for this community. The school has been instrumental in ensuring that the local community is thriving and economically vibrant
on a national and international level and this investment will secure this for years to come.” Neston High School is a high performing mixed comprehensive school and the new building will cater for up to 1750 students, including a large sixth form contingent. The facilities are being provided as part of the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme which is being led by the Department for Education’s team of Education Finance. The building is designed as a three storey structure with state of the art facilities for all its students including 16 Science Labs, 13 Art and Design Technology classrooms, Drama Studio in addition to over 60 other classroom and teaching spaces. The new building will also provide comprehensive Sports & Fitness Facilities including changing facilities, 2 Activity Studios and ICT rich areas for Library, Learning Resource Centre and Sixth Form Study area. “We are really looking forward to enjoying the increased spaces for non-educational use, such as our new 450 sq m dining room, an outside dining area, an eco-garden and improved parking facilities for staff and visitors,” said Mr Dool Dool.

Leisure: Great Gardens of the National Trust BY Stephen Lacey As Spring arrives and some of us think about taking an Easter break, perhaps now is the time to get out into some of the great gardens of our country. This is a beautifully illustrated guide to the best of the National Trust’s collection of great gardens. Filled with evocative descriptions of each garden, from its creators and owners to its planting and de design, it includes fascinating iinsights into growing some in o off the world’s most important a and n rare plants. Stephen L Lacey a paints a vivid historical a and n horticultural picture where all the major periods and al styles of garden design are represented, ranging from magnificent 18th century landscapes like Stowe and Croome Park, and the heady Victorian creations at Biddulph Grange and Waddeston Manor, to famous plantsmen’s gardens of the last century, such as those at Hidcote Manor and Sissinghurst Castle. Glorious colour photographs complement eloquent prose to bring the gardens to life. A lovely coffee table book.
