Somerville’s: Let’s hear what our customers have to say.… “After initially putting our house on the market with another estate agent, we quickly discovered that we were not receiving the service levels that we were promised and subsequently lost confidence in the agent. We switched to Somerville’s and could not believe the difference. Annie, Richard and their team made you feel like you are their only client. We are truly grateful to all of the team at Somerville’s for all their hard work and for looking after us so well.”

“A big thank you for all the effort you have put into selling our house. It is greatly appreciated. We had great confidence in Richard when he sold our house in 2008 and your conduct over this sale has reinforced this feeling. It has been a pleasure dealing with you both.” Mr & Mrs P. “Thank you so much for your help. Your style and manner and personal attention to clients has been well received and refreshing in this day and age.” Sue R. Waverton
David & Sarah O’Donnell, Hoole
“Thank you so much for your wisdom, patience, guidance and expertise. You have been a great support.” Ms J.Y. Hoole
“Thank you so much for everything you’ve done in ensuring the sale of my house has gone so smoothly! Both you and Richard have not only been great fitting people in for viewings but helpful offering guidance through the process – something that cannot be underestimated. I’ll be in touch over the next few days with the keys but just wanted to thank you for being great with the sale!” Charlie M. Chester
“What a great partnership Richard & Annie are. I am so pleased I was recommended Somerville’s who in my opinion have proved they can show the big chains what professionalism and customer service is all about. Annie took the stress out of house selling for me by keeping in contact each week. I will never have any hesitation in recommending Somerville’s and I am eagerly awaiting getting a signed copy of Annie’s book!” Mr Sandiford, Curzon Park

Council leader’s regret over Elms move
THE controversial decision to allow The Elms GP surgery to become a mini supermarket has been criticised by council leader Cllr Mike Jones. Speaking on Dee Radio, Cllr Jones said the move was ‘not necessarily the best decision’. Cllr Jones was not on the planning committee which voted the scheme through so he had no say in the decision. However, in the radio interview he added: “It causes me a lot of concern about the number of supermarkets we are seeing around because I think some of our small independent businesses do a really great job in providing good service and this is sufficiently away from Faulkner Street that I think it would cause problems in my view. “Personally if I was on the committee I would have voted against it.”

Community centre cafe set to open next month Plans to implement the Hoole ‘Hub’ project at Hoole Community Centre are beginning to take shape. The Trust that manages the community centre secured nearly £50,000 of funding from the People Millions lottery funding in November 2014 following a successful community campaign which secured nearly 4,000 public votes - the highest number of votes received by any North West project. The Hub will provide a focal point for the local community, centred on the relocated library and new community café. It will bring together people who may be socially isolated by providing a range of opportunities to both participate in, and be involved with, the delivery of activities. Bob Thompson, Chairman of Hoole Community Development Trust said: “We are delighted to have secured this funding which will see great improvements at our Centre for the benefit of the whole community. We would like to thank the volunteers who have already given a lot of time to help make this plan a reality.” The two rooms which will become the new Library and Cafe have been newly decorated and a number of posts to support the project, including a Café Manager and Volunteer Coordinator are being advertised. The café aims to open by the end of May. Hoole Labour councillor Alex Black, said: “This is an exciting year for Hoole Community Centre. Our hub plans coincide with the 150th anniversary of the building and we are planning some special celebrations later in the year.” Further improvements to the centre are also being made including replacing outdated lighting with new energy efficient lighting and installing secondary glazing throughout the building thanks to funding secured from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental LTD).

Quintessentially A
lthough the draft wails under the door like the ghost of an overly camp Frankie Howerd impersonator, it would seem that the real supernatural pull emanates from the far corner of the kitchen.
I’ve been reliant on a boiler intent on communicating through a series of knocks and bangs. I’ve tried the “tap once for yes and twice for no” method but the shower still cuts out. It turned out the boiler was manufactured in Spain and so my northern infused Cockney slang was futile. The subtle thump probably stalled any possible future dialogue but did ensure a quieter and moderately warmer house.
“Perfect drying weather!” said the woman taming her crazy hair as she dragged her washing into the Laundrette, seemingly unaware of the irony. The engineer arrived a lot later than stated. He asked if I had been waiting long. “No, not long” I lied as if the two hours and 47 minutes I’d paced the house like a caged animal was the way I usually spent my precious holiday leave. I detected a hint of an accent. Spanish! (I kid you not). I wasn’t sure if I was impressed or unsettled that British Gas now employed the skills of appliance whisperers.
When the British Open drew crowds to the Wirral last year, we bumped into a Canadian woman at the Faulkner. She told us she had already booked the same B&B in Hoole for the following year and refused to stay anywhere else. She had fallen in love with our neighbourhood and echoed the engineer’s term “quintessentially English” while helping herself to one of my chips, even dunking it in my ketchup while I pretended not to be outraged!
It sounded elegant coming from her. Less so from him but I was impressed because I’d already prejudged him on his tea etiquette. I’d wrongly assumed the five heaped teaspoons of sugar signified an intellectual inferiority and the way he had necked it in just three hits while I was still swapping hands and blowing at mine was a clear indicator that his usual drinking partners were not so “quintessentially English!” He was the kind of bloke that drank significantly faster than the rest thus making the unspoken rules of “rounds” shambolic.
Within the first 15 minutes I’d learnt all about his passage to the UK, how long he had been subcontracting and how much he loved coming to these ‘cute’ terraces in Hoole. I puffed my chest out but played down the compliment in a I offered him a biscuit. He’d already chugged “what, this old thing” way and felt like a proud the mug dry but he took one anyway. He went for parent. Hoole had received its first glowing the foil wrapper while I opted for the bourbon. report card of the year. 26 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
y Hoole
That’s when the whole quintessentially English thing stepped up a gear. The tin now boasted just one biscuit; a lonely custard cream sat central in what was now a barren plastic tray of crumbs. I saw him eye it cautiously and so I did the very British thing of offering it to him. He did the very un-British thing of taking it! I left the kitchen at that point. It was nearing 20 minutes and despite its tapping, the boiler was still being ignored.
‘CAN I GET A COFFEE?’
I was queuing in Cafe.com the other day and the American lad ahead of me asked if they could ‘get’ a coffee. I felt myself cringe. It sounded perfectly natural on US dramas but here, in our quintessentially English village, it sounded so alien. I ordered an Americano and hid the double standard in a large cardboard cup with a plastic lid.
As I wandered home past the wet fish shop, the butcher, the baker and the candle stick maker, the bloke outside the Brom asked me for a light. I apologised to him for not being a smoker! The boiler was tapping again when I got back. I could hear it from the front door. My neighbour
was leaving as I was entering. Our doors are only inches apart and we seem to meet at this point on a regular basis but, every time, she contorts in a way that gives a pretty convincing “too busy to notice you” and no pleasantries are ever exchanged. Her door slammed harder than she expected and she appeared to apologise to it rather than me.
I gave the boiler a gentle clout, it instantly fell silent and I thanked it (with a Spanish accent) before calling the engineer. l apologised for it not being fixed properly and he laughed at me. Supposedly we Brits apologise for everything. I thought back to the time I’d apologised to the woman who attempted to cripple me with her shopping trolley having failed to notice my 6’6” bulk standing perfectly still by the cheese counter. Why did I do that? She hit me. And why was I there? Because there was somebody standing in the way of what I wanted on another isle and rather than wait and put unwanted pressure on him, I stepped to one side, realised I was now in front of the cheese counter and ended up purchasing mature Cheddar at £4 a slab just to save face! And while I recount this, I’m listening to the church bells ringing while sat in a “cute” and somewhat noisy red bricked Victorian terrace, in a narrow street, only a stone’s throw away from a typically traditional and somewhat rare British high street in the not so rural Cheshire plains. And when it all gets too typically British, I take the 100 yard stroll into Faulkner Street and become Italian, or French or Indian or Chinese and the only British bit is having to decide whether it’s best to go in sunglasses or a submarine.

Look up....
and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about
Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Planting and picking in the park People in Hoole helped plant Cherry trees in Alexandra Park. The flowering cherry trees, funded from the Member Budgets of Hoole Councillors Alex Black and Bob Thompson, were planted near the park’s tennis courts to create a feature whilst also encouraging wildlife to flourish in the area. Families and residents also helped council officers with a litter pick in the park and joined in with bulb planting activities during the day. Hoole History Corner Hamilton Street Ralph Earlam, Chairman of the Hoole History and Heritage Society, explores the history of this still imposing street.
H
amilton Street is one of the oldest roads in Hoole; it was the through way from Newton (Lane) into Boughton and Chester. Its route was via The Narrows and the unmade road (now known as Crawford’s Walk) across a bridge that used to be over Flookers Brook and then over the canal bridge (built in 1772) into Hoole Lane. The street name comes from the Hamilton family who, in the late 1700’s and the early 1800’s, acquired a large part of the land on which urban Hoole was developed after the railways arrived in Chester. They built Hoole House in 1760 and acquired Hoole Old Hall (not the present Hoole Hall) in 1800. Charles Hamilton lived at Hoole Lodge ( the manor house which was on the west corner of what is now Park Drive and Hoole Road) which they leased from the Earl of Shrewsbury who was Lord of the Manor. In the mid 19th century, in contrast to the people living in the narrow terraced streets closer to the railway station, the residents of Hamilton Street were undoubtedly among the prosperous and professional middle classes. A sample of Directory entries from 1857 and 1864 shows, among others,
David Adams, a Cheese Factor John McCormack, Comptroller of Customs, Watergate Street John Hogg, Inspector of Railways, Great Western Railway John J Clark, Assistant Overseer and Rate Collector living at “The Hermitage” Frederick Marshall, Editor Cheshire Observer residing in “Alma Villas” Phillip H. Keay, Coal Merchant in “Hoole Villa” The Offices of the Hoole Local Board set up in 1864 (forerunner of Hoole Urban District Council) were at No. 21, and a 1902 Directory even records a purpose built laundry operating from No. 43. An 1874 map also shows that several of the houses had wells on their premises. A Methodist Chapel which opened in 1903 was replaced by the present Church in 1928. Some older readers will recall that Crosville’s Piper’s Ash/Guilden Sutton bus to and from Chester went via Hamilton Street (impossible to imagine today with cars parked along the length of it!).

HOOLE RANGERS FC
Performances improving for Hoole Rangers Hoole Rangers 1st team results, in the seven games since new year continue to disappoint, however the performances have significantly improved. With the exception of two games against top of the table Lache, and 4th placed Kelma, where basic mistakes were the main reasons for the undeserved scores of 2-9 and 1-6 respectively, the attitude and performances have been good. Four of the other five games were extremely close and decided by the odd goal, remarkably all with a scoreline of 3-2. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of three of those results, so our only win this year was 3-2 against 5th placed Ellesmere port. The other game was a senior cup match against West Cheshire side, Upton AA reserves and a great performance saw us take the game into extra time, where once again we lost by the only goal of the game Hoole Reserves continue with their rebuild with new players joining the club on a weekly basis. The performances are beginning to improve since new year, but we are still a little way from being truly competitive in this very strong division. The results are 1 win in the cup against division 3 side Neston,, a draw against Crossway and four defeats, 9-1 at top of the table Broughton, 4-0 at Porkys Pantry, 1-11 at Blacon FC and 6-4 away to Hooton.
The really good news is that spirt in both teams remains very good, and our focus for the final two months of the season is to keep the 1st team in the Premier league, and continue rebuilding the reserves squad to ensure they finish the season strongly and are better prepared for next season Although this winter has seen much less rain that in previous years, the new drainage work appears to be working well and we are hopeful we will see a significant reduction in the games lost to the weather next season, when we move back to our original pitch The team and officials are all doing a great job, but we would still like to strengthen the club in the following areas : l New Players. We have two teams in the Chester & District League, one in the Premier league and the other in Division 1. l Sponsors. Helping fund items such as tracksuits, match balls, match fees etc. or maybe helping with the changing room refurbishment project l New committee members. to help run the club. If you interested in any of the above positions, please contact me on mobile / e-mail below and I will advise how you can get involved.

crime update with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
Break-ins continue to concern HOUSE burglaries are the hot topic this month in Hoole and Newton. There have been a number of break-ins of late, so I’d like to remind people that they should make their houses as secure as possible. For example, if you are going away for a night, don’t forget to put the alarm on or maybe buy some timers for the light switches. Thieves have been particularly keen to take gold and jewellery from homes in Hoole belonging to people from Asia. So please remember to keep all valuables out of sight. I’m also keen to highlight thefts from vehicles in the area. I’d like to remind motorists to make sure their cars are properly locked and valuables are out of sight. If you have any information on these incidents please call the police non-emergency number 101 and leave a message for me.

HAPPY EASTER BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER It was Eric Hoffer, the American writer who once said, “Man is eminently a storyteller. His search for a purpose, a cause, an ideal, a mission and the like is largely a search for a plot and a pattern in the development of his life story -- a story that is basically without meaning or pattern.” Whilst I would agree with Hoffer that story telling is important I do take issue with him that the story is without meaning. Let me tell you one of my favourite stories that I hope might illustrate what I mean… Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, “Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems.” Then the second tree said, “Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world.” Finally the third tree said, “I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 26 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
After a few months later, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. Looking at the first tree one said, “This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter” ... and he began cutting it down. At the second tree a woodsman said, “This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard.” When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, “I don’t need anything special from this tree so I’ll just cut it down. When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. A baby was born and placed in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. A great storm arose and the tree didn’t think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. Then one of the men stood up and said “Peace” and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. The tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it. I believe the story of our lives is rooted in meaning and purpose and the moral of this story is that when things don’t seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don’t always know what God’s plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best. Finally may I wish all the readers of the Hoole Roundabout a very Happy Easter and invite you to consider coming along to one of the local Hoole churches to celebrate with us on this very special day, Easter Sunday, April 5th, you’d be very welcome.

Newton shops get a makeover The car park at the Dicksons Drive shops on Dicksons Drive has received a makeover. Kyriacos (Gary) Adamou, owner of Monogram Launderette, contacted Cheshire West and Chester Council to ask for advice on improving the area. The improvements made by Gary include the removal of the damaged wall, which has been replaced by oak posts and 13 flowerbeds planted with evergreen. Parking bays have been added to the car park and it is now one way in and out, making the area more customer-friendly. The car park marking was funded by a contribution from the Council Member Budgets of Cllrs Tom Parry and Adrian Walmsley. Gary Adamou said: Local people are all talking about the new shops front and how nice it. It is not all about making money, it is important for people to look after their community. This is another way to say thank you to all my customers.” Top: Cllr Tom Parry, Kyriacos (Gary) – owner of Monogram, Michelle Markert (Council Locality Officer), and Cllr Adrian Walmsley view the transformation.
