Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But

it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton

areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

How to prepare your home for sale Hoole Roundabout April 2016

9

By Richard Wheeler Cert.REA MANY people have asked us how to show off their home at its best in this busy market period so we have put together some handy hints and tips on how to prepare your home for sale.

First Impressions

It is vital to create the right first impression and a tidy looking house will attract more viewings, giving you more choices and hopefully a higher price. The first thing a buyer sees is the outside of your home. If looks untidy they will automatically assume that the inside is the same. Take some time to tidy the garden, trim the borders, sweep the drive, add some flower pots or hanging baskets and, if it needs it, even paint the front door.

De-clutter

De-clutter! It’s the phrase most sellers dread, but it doesn’t have to be painful! A large proportion of buyers are moving to gain more ‘space’, so show it off to them, don’t hide it! Make sure smaller or narrower areas such as the hallway, stairs and landing are free from clutter, especially at floor and eye level. A tidy room presents much better than an untidy one so clear away the kids’ toys, put the dog basket in the garage, take down the birthday cards (temporarily) and put the dishes away.

Kitchen

A kitchen is often the engine room of a home where walls and tiles are subject to a greater amount of wear and tear. Before you go ripping it all out, try painting the walls, re-grouting the tiles, deepcleaning cupboard fronts and surfaces, you may be surprised what an effect this has (and it could save you thousands of pounds!). If you are considering replacing the kitchen before you sell, please talk to us first so that we can help you assess the viability, cost and benefit.

Always remember you are selling in a competitive environment. Your house must stand out more to your buyer than any other property for sale at the time.

Bathroom

The bathroom is another key area. It should be clean and fresh, with no water marks or lime scale encrusted taps. Replacing a window blind or shower head & hose can have a huge impact. The suite should be well sealed and the tiles clean and grouted. Clear away the toiletries, fold the towels and put the loo seat down!

Decoration

The standard of decoration is always a consideration so walk through your property with a critical eye. Over time paint work becomes marked especially around light switches and on stairs with no wall rail. Check that all lights have working bulbs, the windows are clean both inside and out, there’s no dripping tap or broken fencing and that the curtains are put up properly.

Outside space

Another important factor for many purchasers is the outside space your home has to offer. Patios and decking should be moss free and clean, the lawn well cut and the borders weeded. If you have a garage, try and keep it in order (although we know this is not always easy!) In autumn months you may need to sweep up leaves and cut back summer growth.

l If you would like any help or advice concerning your home specifically, please call us on 318777 or e-mail info@somervillesestateagents.co.uk and we will be happy to pop out and see you.

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

CONCERNS ABOUT SHED RAIDS IN HOOLE HOUSEHOLDERS are urged to beef up security on their garden sheds following a spate of burglaries in recent weeks. There have been four shed breaks in the Canadian Avenue area of Hoole, with opportunist thieves trying their luck in gardens at dusk. I would urge people to get a decent lock for their shed. We know that sheds are traditionally not particularly secure but if a thief is confronted by a sturdy lock he or she will have to get some bolt cutters or try and lever the doors off, both of which can take time and make a noise. We’ve noticed that a lot of the time the thieves are just hoping to get lucky and sometimes they will find a shed with a flimsy lock or an unlocked shed with a valuable road bike inside. The expensive road bikes are often stolen so it might be worth keeping it in the house. Another precaution that people can take is installing an outside light that is triggered by movement. A thief will be less likely to break in if he is lit up! Finally, I’d just like to urge people to give us a call if they see something suspicious. You don’t need to worry about wasting our time, because we would rather you let us know if you see a stranger in a neighbour’s garden and then we can investigate. If it’s a false alarm, then no worries! l If you have any info on this, please contact the police on the non-emergency number 101.

Can we dig it? Yes we can The children at Hoole Church of England Primary School are enjoying the latest addition to the reception outdoor learning area. Reception teacher Hanna King says: “We are delighted to have our new sandpit and resources for the children in Reception to use. The large scale digging equipment was funded by out PTA. “It provides a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their gross motor skills, which will in turn equip them with the strength and coordination to become wonderful writers.”

Hoole History Corner

Ralph Earlam, Chairman of Hoole History and Heritage Society, looks at the resident IF you pass by quickly, the eastern side of Lightfoot Street appears to be a continuous row of terraced houses. Look closely and you will see differences in style which came about with the development of that side of the Street. The first houses at the northern end were built in 1880/1 but the gap shown in the 1889 OS Map indicates where the landowner and solicitor Mr. J. P. Court applied on behalf of Mr. Fisher, Builder, of Hoole for a full licence to a public house about to be erected. This would have been 232 yards from the Ermine Hotel and was refused. Terraced

houses were then built to Walker Street, where larger houses were eventually erected on each corner. Building continued southwards onto 323 sq. yds of land which had been bought by Frederick Lipsham in 1886, but only as far as No. 39. (No.40, an odd shaped dwelling was squeezed in later). It stopped there because the boundary with Cowpastures had been reached. This was the remainder of the field sold to the Railway Company by Macclesfield School, subsequently purchased by the Marquis of Westminster in 1842 and exchanged by him for land in Handbridge which was owned

by the Bluecoat Hospital. This apparently simple deal in fact contravened a condition of a legal Trust governing the land and the matter was not resolved until 1896/7!

F c w f q

In 1894 Chester Football Club rented Cowpastures for their ground (complete with grandstand) from the Bluecoat Hospital. Attendances of up to 2000 were recorded. Cycle racing and bank holiday fĂŞtes also took place there.

William Williams, a builder from Halkyn Road, then bought the land for ÂŁ3,608 and began the extension of Lightfoot Street from No. 4. These newer houses crossed the end of

This site was later occupied by the West of England Building Supply Company in the1920s and by Houlbrooks Produce Merchants in the 1950s.

Because of its origins the road was often in a bad state of repair, cab drivers refused to deliver there and the council received a lot of criticism. It could never have been envisaged that the street along which cattle were driven would eventually contain so many parked cars and require speed humps.

HOOLE RANGERS FC

Rangers look to emerge stronger from their bleak midwinter SINCE Hoole Rangers’ decision to withdraw the 1st team from the Chester and Wirral football league premier division in November last year, the rebuilding has progressed well for the Division 2 side. The first game for the new side in November was against Elton Rigger and resulted in an exciting 5-5 draw. Early December saw a very difficult tie against Premier division Kelsall, and there were no surprises with Hoole going down by 8-2. At that point, we once again had the annual enforced winter break due to waterlogged pitches and didn’t play again until mid February. This usually frustrating break however, allowed us to recruit a number of new players and the ongoing weekly training gave time for managers Mark Roberts and Craig Jones to put together a much more competitive squad. The first game after the break was a very difficult tie against Division 2 leaders Samba, away in the Cayzer Shield. After a great performance, the game went into extra time. After 120 minutes, the teams could not be separated and the game went to penalties, with Hoole unfortunately losing out 5-4. There then followed 2 league

games against mid table sides and Hoole ran our worthy winners by 3-1 against Orange Athletic and 6-0 against Ellesmere Port Spartans. In the final game of this period, we were drawn against a strong Division 1 side Ashton in the Tom Gerraghty Memorial Trophy and despite a very good overall performance, mistakes cost us dearly and the 0-5 scoreline was an unfair reflection of the difference between the sides. The problems at the beginning of the season meant we had lost a significant amount of ground on the top teams, winning only two of our first 12 games, but we are looking at a strong finish to the season with a top fiveplace a real possibility. Geoff Neale In February we had some very sad news, Geoff Neale, Hoole Rangers President, died aged 70. Geoff was one of the founder members of the club, and played an active role on the committee for over 20 years. We offer Geoff’s son Barry, who has played for Hoole Rangers in every season since 1992, plus all of Geoff’s family, our deepest condolences.

Local artist brings text acronyms to life - LOL HOOLE artist Nellie Maan has kept herself busy over the last few years exploring the world of text speak using the visual arts. Nellie’s art delves into the multi-layered meaning of text language – a language that Nellie believes says little but speaks volumes. She has adopted a clean, fresh modern approach to creating the pieces. Her work centres on the sometimes confusing and fast evolving language of text acronyms. What do we mean when we add LOL (Laugh Out Loud), CRBT (Crying Really Big Tears) or FF (Friends Forever) at the end of a text message? Is there such a saying as FoMO (Fear of Missing Out) and has it really become a recognised social disease and mental health syndrome. The collection of 12 art works will be shown throughout April at the Moot Restaurant in Holmes Chapel. Her piece entitled ‘Fear of Missing Out’ plays with the idea that the ice cubes, like social media, are little more than a temporary creation that will melt away and disappear. Another piece entitled ‘Facetime’ questions what it means to be face to face with someone. In a world where people seem more capable of communicating with each other by simply texting across the table than by actually conversing verbally are we losing the art of talking in a social setting? Are we absent from the present time as we focus constantly on the next engagement or activity? HEROIC STORY BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

A FEW weeks ago I was talking to my 10 year old nephew and he was telling me all about a film that he had just seen on DVD called “Finding Nemo.” He was really excited because Nemo was just like one of the fish that his dad had in his fish tank and he loved feeding the fish with dad! I was able to tell him I’d seen the film and that it was one of my Andy Glover has lived in favourite films!! Hoole with his wife Sue for In the film Nemo is a little clown fish. He lives in the Great Barrier 27 years. Andy began at Reef with his dad, Marlin. Nemo’s father loved him very much. Hoole Baptist Church, on He watched over Nemo and protected him from every evil. Nemo Westminster Road, as Youth and his dad were best friends. But one day Nemo disobeyed his Pastor, before becoming father and swam beyond the reef. He was suddenly scooped up by the Pastor and now Team a diver and taken away on a boat. Nemo’s disobedience caused him Leader. to be separated from his father. Nemo was so sad because there was nothing he could do to get back to his father. Nemo ended up in fish tank in a dentist’s office overlooking the Sydney Harbour. His situation seemed hopeless. The father loved little Nemo so much that it did not matter how big the ocean was, or how many fish there were. He was determined to save Nemo, and set out on an incredible adventure to seek and save little Nemo. The good news of this heroic father travelling the ocean in search of his son reached Nemo through a pelican named Nigel. Eventually father and son are reunited. There are many reasons why so many people enjoy the film Finding Nemo. It is a powerful story about determination of a caring father. Marlin refused to give up – he was determined to find with his son. It is the story of being lost, and then found. This year I have been involved a new project here in Chester call “City Passion” This was a modern adaptation of the story of Jesus Christ’s arrest, trial and suffering, it included music, song, drama and cast of a few hundred. It ended with the execution of Jesus by crucifixion and then left us with a hint that this was not the end of the story and we could look forward to His resurrection 3 days later!!! All of this took place on Good Friday and was out on the streets of Chester City Centre. The most iconic image of the Passion is the crucifix - Christ in his last agony on the cross - found in statues and paintings, in glass, stone and wooden images in churches, and in jewellery. There are 2 main themes within the Passion; incarnation - the death of Jesus shows humanity that God had become truly human and that he was willing to undergo every human suffering, right up to the final agony of death; victory - the victory of Christ over death. The central belief of Christianity is that Jesus is alive; he rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples for 40 days before his ascension into Heaven, this claim makes Christianity different from all other Faiths – in that its founder – Jesus Christ – is still alive. At this time of Easter the story of Nemo can help you understand God and his love for you, when Jesus came to Judea to live, he came seeking and searching for people who are lost, those who God wants to know and to care for. Today God is still searching for you – through Jesus and His death and resurrection he has provided the means by which you can be found! 32 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

COLOURFUL SPRING

APRIL is the month when plants really get going and I would like to start by looking at climbers, in particular Clematis. Spring gives a number of varieties to consider. Clematis armandii with larger, white slightly scented flowers is an evergreen climber which will flower even in darker corners of the garden. It needs a sheltered spot with moist well drained soil to do best and bear in mind it will cover a large area. I love Clematis alpina with small hanging bells of flowers in blue, white and pink. Clematis macropetala is particularly beautiful with delicate double flowers and does not get as woody as the alpina varieties. Prune just after flowering by cutting back a little if they get too large. Small perennials such as Allysum and Aubretia provide early season colour and another attractive alpine flower are Auriculas. Similar in size to Primroses they have velvety flowers in a wide range of colours. Very good for moist well drained soil in sun and dislike wet soil. If you have a woodland edge site with moist well drained soil try the stunning Dicentra spectabilis. It has arching stems with white or pink and white hanging flowers. It does die down later in the season but is lovely for a woodland garden. Plant alongside Epimedium a low growing perennial with glossy heart shaped leaves. In early spring they have new bronzy leaves and pale yellow or pink flowers depending on variety. Plant hardy annuals such as sunflowers, nasturtiums and marigolds out in the garden, where they are to flower. If the weather is mild later in April, sow seeds of lettuce, carrots and radishes outside. Make sure roses are fed and look out for aphids on new growth. Spray with a solution of washing up liquid to keep them at bay. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Briarfield near Burton on the Wirral is open on 24th April and has a couple of acres of gardens with alpines, bulbs and herbaceous borders with plants for sale.
