Traders’ anger over Brook Street parking charges BROOK Street traders are angry about parking charges which are being introduced by the council. The draft Traffic Regulation Order will change the on-street limited waiting bays on City Road, Brook Street and Foregate Street, Chester, into pay and display parking bays. Charging will apply between 8am and 9pm. Between 8am and 6pm there will be a charge of £1 per hour with a maximum period of waiting of two hours on City Road and one hour on Foregate Street and Brook Street. Between 6pm and 9pm there will be a £1 flat rate. There are fears among traders that the parking fee could drive away shoppers, particularly if they end up getting fined! Stewart Tattersall, who owns Dee Sports, says the parking charges will drive people away: “It will hit all of us hard.” Other traders say that the council will earn more money from the charges at the expense of local businesses. The council says that cars are often left on the pavement due to a lack of parking spots in Brook Street. The council insists that the introduction of ‘modest’ parking charges will help ensure that parking places are available for those visiting the local shops, bars and restaurants. Cllr Karen Shore said: “Changes to parking charges and the introduction of length of stay restrictions will ensure everyone can park where they need to, when they need to, and altering the restrictions and introducing charging on specific roads will ensure parking is fair across the city.”

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
Muddy burglars crept in round the back We’ve had a couple of house burglaries recently in Canadian Avenue and Panton Road. On each occasion, the burglars have got in round the back, potentially via the allotments, then broke in by expertly removing the door locks. They’ve left muddy footprints, which leads us to believe they got in through the allotments. If anyone sees anything suspicious, please let us know on the non-emergency 101 number. It might be nothing, but it’s always best to be safe, we’d rather know and investigate where cars or vans have been left.
Cycling on pavements THERE have been a complaint in Hoole Lane about people cycling on pavements. This is a tricky one because in certain circumstances it’s safer to be on the pavement than it is on the road - for example when the bike is being riden by a small child. I think the distinction here is that bikes should not be riden dangerously on the pavements. Chancers A lot of crime is carried out by chancers who will just try and open doors and windows on the off chance that they are unlocked. Last month there was a theft on Hoole Road where the owner of a car parked it on the driveway but left the door unlocked and they keys inside. A thief then got in and drove off. It’s the same with house burglaries, make sure doors and windows are locked and don’t leave items on display. Vandalism has died down in Alexandra Park. We had a number of instances of vandalism and graffiti earlier in the year but we’ve stepped up patrols, even after dark, which has kept a lid on the situation

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about
Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Nellie asks the big questions Hoole artist Nellie Maan has been asking people some major life questions. Nellie, who runs the Adrenaline Brush company, was launching Splodge, an educational resource at an exhibition in Birmingham. According to Nellie, Splodge asks questions such as ‘Who am I? How did I get here? And where do I belong?’ Through a series of six books, Splodge explores identity, belonging, how we can make the world a better place and much more. The stories are shaped by philosophical, sociological and psychological ideas and come with a full teacher’s resource pack that can be used in the delivery of the national curriculum. Splodge as the name suggests looks like a splodge – splodge of different paints. But there is something very endearing about it. Nellie Maan said: “The aims of the books are to help raise academic achievement, enable children to develop emotional intelligence, improve their communication skills and to make meaningful life choices. We look forward to supplying the resource to schools across the UK.” To find out more visit www.adrenalinebrush.co.uk

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
Splash of spring colour
Spring is well and truly underway and there is so much to choose from if you want to add new additions to your garden. Starting with the small perennials I suggest a bright yellow Allysum saxatilis and pink or mauve Aubretia to cascade over walls in sunny spots. Both perennials like a well drained soil. If you have a shadier place with a moist light soil then why not see if the delicate Dicentra Formosa likes your garden. It has lovely light blue grey filigree leaves with little white pink or deep pink flowers. The variety Bacchanal has deep red flowers. Lovely against darker foliage. If you want a spreading shrub or small tree then you should consider an Amelanchier lamarckii or one of the many named varieties of Amelanchier x grandiflora. These pretty shrubs have delicate white flowers in spring and bronzy young leaves. In autumn the foliage turns orange and red looking great against a green hedge or with a background of Rhododendrons. They will cope with any moist but well drained soil in any aspect and light shade. A spring flowering climber is easy as there are so many clematis to choose from. Try Clematis alpina Constance with the deep pink hanging bell like flowers. Easy to grow and likes sun or light shade by a fence. If it gets too big, take the shears to it after flowering but generally it does not need pruning. Work to do in your garden can include sowing seeds of annuals such as Calendula (Marigold) and planting out summer bulbs and corms such as Gladioli. Plant seeds of tomatoes, marrows and courgettes in pots on a windowsill inside or wait till May when temperatures are higher to plant out in the soil. If you have planted broad beans in pots, harden them off gradually and plant out in late April. Vegetables such as carrots, beetroot, radishes and lettuce can be sown directly into the soil. Look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Briarfield in Burton on the Wirral is open on Sunday 15th April 2 to 5 pm with 2 acres of lovely woodland planting, herbaceous borders and many unusual plants.

HAPPY EASTER BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER It was Eric Hoffer, the American writer who once said, “Man is eminently a storyteller. His search for a purpose, a cause, an ideal, a mission and the like is largely a search for a plot and a pattern in the development of his life story -- a story that is basically without meaning or pattern.” Whilst I would agree with Hoffer that story telling is important I do take issue with him that the story is without meaning. Let me tell you one of my favourite stories that I hope might illustrate what I mean… Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, “Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems.” Then the second tree said, “Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world.” Finally the third tree said, “I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. After a few months later, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. Looking at the first tree one said, “This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter” ... and he began cutting it down. At the second tree a woodsman said, “This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard.” When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his

dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, “I don’t need anything special from this tree so I’ll just cut it down. When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. A baby was born and placed in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. A great storm arose and the tree didn’t think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. Then one of the men stood up and said “Peace” and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. The tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it. I believe the story of our lives is rooted in meaning and purpose and the moral of this story is that when things don’t seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 30 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader. your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don’t always know what God’s plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best. For many of us, we have come to assume Easter is all about chocolate and Easter bunnies, but originally it was the celebration of the Christian church to commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. He did that on his own power as the God who had come into human history in human form and died on the cross to redeem people from their sins. In all of history, no one had ever made that claim before. Because of this fact, history was split in two; the Christian church was started, and the disciples who ran away in fear after the cross became the fearless messengers of this message.” Finally, may I wish all the readers of the Hoole Roundabout a very Happy Easter and invite you to consider coming along to one of the local Hoole churches to celebrate with us on this very special day, Easter Sunday, April 1st, you’d be very welcome.

Hoole History Corner Ralph Earlam & Linda Webb explore the history of the Hoole Angling Society A local resident has asked Hoole History & Heritage Society if it can provide any information about a Cup that he has in his possession. The trophy is inscribed “Hoole Angling Society” and the list of its recipients dates from 1914 to 1938. No records can be found of the Angling Society and a scan of newspapers has revealed no information either. One would expect that the Society would have had regular meetings, at least annually, to award the trophy and there must have been officials to organised fishing matches and collect subscription fees. One of Hoole’s pubs was their likely meeting place; old Hooligans remember that ‘The Ermine’, ‘The Bromfield’ and ‘The Faulkner’ had angling clubs in the period after the Second World War, but no link has been found to an “Hoole Angling Society”.
In the middle of the twentieth century, it was claimed that angling was the most popular participative sport, and a survey as recent as 2014 confirmed that this may still be the case. Findings were based on the number of fishing rod licences sold and an estimate based on the numbers caught fishing without one. Before the days of social media, lots of boys were taken fishing by their fathers or grandfathers for the first time (and perhaps the last time if nothing was caught), and local fishing spots included: • The Shropshire Union Canal. • The River Gowy at Mickle Trafford and Guilden Sutton. • The River Dee at The Meadows, Farndon and Sealand. • Flooded Brickworks’ Pits in Hoole Village, one on The Street near Hoole Bank, the other between the Royal Oak (now Toby Carvery) and Old Hoole Hall Farm. • Flooded Clay Pit at Cotton Edmunds. • Large ponds off Long Lane in the Plas Newton area. One place where fishing was not allowed was Flookersbrook. Bye-laws approved in October 1876 under the Flookersbrook Improvement Act stated that it was an offence to “fish with net or rod or in any other way interfere with the fish or water fowl”. Boys who caught the bug were often seen with fishing rods improvised from garden canes and jam jars full of worms dug from the garden. For those who could afford it, fishing tackle was sold at Henry Monk (Gunmaker) at 77 Foregate Street, still operating after 160 years in Queen Street. Martin’s was also another tackle shop in Lower Bridge Street where there were queues early on Saturday and Sunday mornings for the live maggots sold there. In the 1960’s, George Boddy sold fishing gear from his ‘fireplace’ shop at 143 Westminster Road. For a short time more recently, Hoole Angling Centre moved from premises on the corner of Lightfoot Street to a shop next to The Beehive on Hoole Road.
40 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.
FISHING FOR INFORMATION
During 25 years of competition, 11 different names appeared on the shields of the Cup, two people actually winning it five times. The Society has been able to identify the first winner in 1914 as William Holyoak who lived at 22 Walker Street and is listed in the 1911 Census as a ‘Master Cyclemaker’. He had premises at 45 Lower Bridge Street where Directories also show him as a cycle agent and repairer. He died in 1945 aged 73, but his wife was still living in Walker Street in 1952. Some of the other winners have well known Hoole family surnames and the society is hopeful that readers will be able to identify them, and perhaps through existing family connections learn more about them and Hoole Angling Society. It is a sobering
thought that the Cup was first competed for in 1914 – the year of the outbreak of the First World War and the last award was made in 1938, the year before the Second World War began. If you know anything about Hoole Angling Society and its members, recognise any of the names listed or know of any other information about fishing in Hoole and Newton, Hoole History & Heritage Society would be pleased to hear from you. l Website articles will be updated as new information comes to light. You can read this article by visiting the Hoole History website at http://hoolehistorysoc. btck.co.uk/LeisureRecreationinHoole/ FishingforInformation. The next meeting of HH&HS is on Thursday 19th of April, the topic is ‘Religion in Hoole’, and the speaker is Ralph Earlam.
