HOOLE has one of the most vibrant communities in Chester - and that community spirit is manifested in lots of local events, including the Hoole BBQ, Hoole CE Fair and the Hoole Allotments Day. The same spirit that brought a big grant for Hoole Community Centre is being repeated in a bid to recognise the district in the Great British High Street Awards. So please get behind this scheme on Twitter using the hashtags #Hoole2Win and #GBHighSt. We hope you enjoy the magazine and don’t forget to say you saw the advert in Hoole Roundabout.

Another bank to shut down THE Lloyds bank branch on Hoole Road is to close in October, it has been announced. It is the second bank to announce its intention to shut a branch following the decision by Nat West to close the Faulkner Street premises in September. In a letter to customers, the bank says: “We have made our decision to close the branch because we have another close by that allows us to serve the local area. “We apologise for any inconvenience and have informed customers of the closest alternative branch which is on Foregate Street, just over half a mile away.” A petition to save Nat West ‘s branch has already been started by MP Chris Matheson and he has been in contact with Lloyds to explain his concerns. He said: This is a kick in the teeth for small businesses in Chester by an accountant in London.”

Meet Brian!

Hoole Roundabout August 2015

Over the past 18 months we have seen family-owned Somerville’s estate Agents establish themselves as a very hands-on company with a flair for making both themselves and their properties stand out from the crowd. So it’s no surprise their new company car stands out too! ... Meet Brian. Built in 1987, he has been in the family for a number of years now, but has recently undergone a complete makeover to bring him onto the front line of the business. With his main duties being to assist travel between accompanied viewings, you will see Brian out and about on the streets of Chester throughout the summer and autumn and he will happily ‘toot’ to anyone who waves as he pootles on by. Annie Somerville told us that Brian has already proved to be very popular with customers and one in particular even called in asking if he could have a ‘selfie’ with Brian for his Facebook page! Richard Wheeler added: “Brian is a tribute to my late father who originally owned and restored the 2CV. I am sure he would have been delighted to be remembered as an old French car!”

M

y parents (whom I lovingly refer to as the ‘rents) have been and gone. They stayed a week and revelled in all that Hoole and Chester had to offer. On day one they were up and dressed and, like pilgrims, were wandering towards the call of freshly ground coffee. “They do a deluxe platter still” my dad said as he reminisced about the black pudding. I wasn’t sure if they would have grown tired of visiting the same places but considering they were tucking into their Tuesday breakfasts at cafe.com before I’d even set foot in the shower, it was evident that they didn’t want to miss out on their favourite haunts.

My love affair with Hoole is ever evolving and, considering the shapes and contortions my dad was climbing into as he fumed at the sheer ignorance of some of the drivers abandoning their vehicles on Faulkner Street, I’ve realised Hoole has softened me! I was convinced I was going to be just like him. The grumpy old man status and high blood pressure was one I was learning to accept but while my dad disappeared 22 Tel 01244 350398

into the footwell with his feet behind his head, I was more than happy to sit back and let these drivers take their chances with the traffic wardens. We crawled along stopping and starting for the short stretch between what was the banks and the Brom but I wouldn’t allow myself to think that these motorists were locals. I’d like to think that we natives have a bit more pride in our neighbourhood. No, these were visitors, passing through but more importantly, shopping and spending in our local stores. Yes, they park like idiots but they help keep our independent retailers ticking over.

Now the spare room is parent free again for another year, my little terrace feels like a tardis. They have their own mugs when they come to stay. The smart ones with the big Times New Roman navy blue letters printed on the front. ‘M’ on hers. ‘P’ on his. Conveniently, they cross from my parents to the in-laws as their initials are exactly the same. When I came home from work today only our mugs were on the worktop. The M & P are washed, wiped and

www.hooleroundabout.com

packed away in the cupboard again. So, we decided rather than sitting on front of the TV and wallowing on the empty aftermath of having entertained for the past seven days, we would take ourselves up into Hoole and continue on the same vein. Why should the party stop now? We have all of this within a stone’s throw - “right on the doorstep” my mum kept saying. So, we decided not to take it for granted.

THE GAY WEDDING

Two lads sat alongside us in the Faulkner. They were about our age. Judging by their appearance, they had just finished working on site somewhere nearby and were waiting for their wives/

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft

girlfriends to join them. They had already finished their first pint when we took the table next to theirs. They were taking advantage of being able to (loudly) voice their concerns about a wedding invitation. Both had been invited as plus ones to a “gay wedding.” Neither had met the happy couple and, judging by the conversation, neither had been to a gay wedding before. It grated on me at first; the wedding being referred to as a “gay wedding” rather than just a wedding but their obvious discomfort became pure comedy gold. What should they buy? What should they wear? What songs would they have to sing? Which one of the gays would wear the dress? It was right off the back of America

filling up my newsfeed with their legalisation of same sex marriages. And so I realised that the chances that I am going to receive an invitation in the not too distant future to a very similar wedding were ever increasing. I could very well be one of these guys sat there in the pub wondering what on earth to expect. If I had the front, I would loved to have pulled up a chair and given those blokes some tongue-in-cheek tips just to see how far I could push it: (1) learn the words to Over The Rainbow because if you’re having to read it off the flyer you’re gonna miss the happy couple cry real glitter. (2) don’t throw rice. Instead of a packet of Uncle Ben’s, you are going to need to take a ‘grab bag’ of Skittles or similar alternative rainbow coloured confectionery.

(3) don’t cross yourself or apologise to the effigy of Jesus for you being there. It’s my understanding that JC doesn’t really give two hoots about this wedding stuff. The guy hung out with prostitutes, lepers, tax collectors, and 12 unmarried

men so I’m guessing he’s probably not that fragile.

The wives/girlfriends rocked up and food was ordered. The conversations became lost in the ebb and flow of the night. We were too fragile ourselves to partake in deluxe platters the next morning but we did manage to grab the bread from the bakers while they were still hot and had regained our appetites for the Moonlight Flicks in the Roman Gardens that evening. Our friend booked the tickets. The Wizard of Oz! I kid you not. We ordered pizzas and hired deck chairs and cushions that were rainbow striped. We brought our own popcorn and the only thing missing from making the night absolutely fabulous was the grab bag of Skittles. Who needs Oz when you’ve got all this history, character and charm right on your doorstep? And thanks to the ‘rents reigniting my passion for all that is going on around me, I can hand on heart state there’s no need to click my heels together three times. There’s no place like Hoole. There’s no place like Hoole. There’s no place like Hoole.

Cooking up changes at community centre Summer has arrived and the winds of change have blown through Hoole Community Centre in Westminster Road. The centre has become a hub for a wide range of activities and events for the community and will soon be opening the ‘Hobson Café at Hoole Hub’. A brand new kitchen has been installed in preparation for the café opening and the Community Library has moved to the adjoining room at the front of the building. A whole range of refurbishments have taken place funded by a combination of local and national grants as well as monies raised by the centre itself. The Community Café is scheduled to open in September and the newly appointed Café manager, Amy Edwards, is recruiting volunteers to help with the cooking and waiting on. Culinary delights will include cakes baked on the premises, homemade soup, baked potatoes, paninis, great tea and coffee and much more. Volunteers can expect to be rewarded with a ‘cuppa’ and a homemade cake or two! Sally Dobbing has been appointed as the volunteer coordinator and has already identified plenty of volunteer opportunities including social media, admin assistant,

handyperson, Trainee volunteer coordinator and library assistant. Sally and Amy, who have been funded by the Peoples Millions Lottery Fund, held a Volunteer Open Day in July and the centre was the venue for the Hoole Barbecue later in the month. l Hoole Community Development trust, the organisation responsible for the management of Hoole Community Centre won £49,500 from the Peoples Millions Lottery fund. l People and local groups can hire space for workshops, classes, meetings, children’s activities and family celebrations. l There are over 20 different activities taking place at the moment ranging from activities such as Zumba, Yoga, art classes and a variety of dance classes. The community centre has nine spaces available for hire, one being a large hall. It is currently undergoing some renovations to make it the venue of choice for the people of Hoole and surrounding areas. l Visit www.hoolecommunitycentre.org.uk, email admin@hoolecommunitycentre.org.uk or ring 01244 342741.

Hayley’s health and fitness

Health and Fitness blog

What’s your exercise excuse? As a personal trainer and gym instructor I hear daily of various reasons and excuses why people can’t or don’t want to exercise. The top five being... 1.I don’t have time 2.I’m too old 3.I have a bad back 4.I’m too tired 5.I’m too self conscious/ exercise isn’t for me!

Let’s just look at these in detail and really see if these are a real reason for not getting fit. 1: ‘I don’t have time’

Recent research suggests that you don’t need to stay in a gym for hours at a time to burn off a couple of hundred calories.

The idea now is get it done and get home. Many classes are now only 30 mins, the intensity is high but it means with HIIT (High intensity interval training) your blasting off more calories in a shorter time, so you can nip in on a class on your way then you’re still in time to make tea and settle down for the night. There are 168 hours in a week, with the recommended activity levels based on 30 mins x 5 per week that’s only 2.5 hours out the week to fit this in! Get up earlier, use it as your family time, take the children with you or organise your time better to fit this in!

2: ‘I’m too old’ Use it or lose! Not keeping active? Then say goodbye to your muscles. Many of us fear getting old but if you want to stay independent and fully mobile keeping active and using a mix of cardio and weights is the only way to maintain your posture, muscle tone and keep yourself mobile. It’s never too late to start something! 3: ‘I have a bad back’

If the doctor has told you NOT to exercise then obviously you must take this advice. If the doctor has said do what you can, then this is NOT reason to use your bad back as an excuse. Many people come to me complaining of a bad back, but having seen the results from a tailored, safe workout the positive results speak for themselves.

Having a strong core means you take the pressure off your back as all the others muscles responsible for maintaining a good posture work hand in hand to keep you in the correct alignment. Not strengthening the whole core means the surrounding muscles over compensate to help the weaker muscles which in turn can lead to a whole host of other problems.

4: ‘I’m too tired’ Everyone has days when they have more energy than others this is a fact, lack of sleep, or a poor sleep or a heavy weekend can leave people feeling fatigued. However there are three things that will help to keep you fuelled and ready for the day, one being a good diet, plenty of water, high fibre foods and complex carbs. The second being a good night’s sleep, aiming for 7/8 hours a night and the third being an active lifestyle. People think by doing exercise it will make you more tired, this couldn’t be any further from the truth, exercise can help to give you energy. 5: ‘I feel self conscious/ don’t have the confidence’

Granted, a group of 40 women can be intimidating, you are worried you’ll go the wrong way, bang into someone or you simply can’t coordinate. Ask yourself this, does it matter? Is anyone remotely interested if you go wrong? The answer is NO! People come to fitness to get fit not to look at what other people can do. Grab a friend to your first class or speak to me for one to one training. Don’t let this be your exercise excuse.

Hoole History Corner

Ralph Earlam, Chairman of the Hoole History and Heritage Society, explores the

South of Charles Street In those 100 yards, on the eastern side WThe Community Centre was originally the Westminster Girls & Infants Schools, built by the Marquis of Westminster in 1865 and enlarged in 1895. Hoole History & Heritage Society has carried out an in depth research in this the Schools’ 150th Anniversary Year and details of this will be available on our website.

The Baptist Church was originally built in 1863 as a Lecture Hall & Reading Room for use by local working men giving them the opportunity to improve their reading skills and general education. From 1893 Ebenezer Baptist Church hired the Reading Room for Sunday worship and purchased it in 1911. It was established as a Church in 1952. Although Peploe and New Peploe Street (as Westminster Road was known) were

predominantly houses, purpose built shops were erected on the corners of Charles Street, Law Street and Philip Street, and a row of three squeezed into a gap opposite Law Street. Traders included:

Butcher (1877 William Mason, 1950’s Nicholsons)

Chemist & Provision Dealer (1878 Lowes, 1950’s Rowlands) Grocer (Luptons on the corner of Philip Street) Newsagent & CirculatingLlibrary of 10,000 volumes (1930/50’s Sharmans) Remarkably, three off licences traded in the Street. On the corner of Charles Street, owned by Pritchards Solicitors, the licensee in 188 0was John Payne, and in the 1930/50s Archibald Manley. The Lion Brewery in 1906

the history of this long and narrow suburban street.

was at No. 56, the Dymond family in the 1940/50. And at No. 138 the pub that never was! Drury House was built in 1877, but following opposition from the local Temperance Movement and the existing pubs was not granted a licence. Magistrates were eventually persuaded to sanction an off licence 1892 to William Mullins. From 1939 to the 50s Albert Harrison was licensee. Many readers will recall that the Drury House off-licence was still operating in the 1980s.

Next to the School Hoole’s second garage appeared in 1930 run by Harry Oates and later his son. Next door were buildings used by Maddocks the coach builders and as a workshop and store for Norbury & Sons, plumbers whose shop was on the corner of Charles Street. At the junction with Lightfoot Street was a builder’s yard which became Houlbrooks, Produce Merchants.

As you cross Lightfoot Street to approach the railway bridge below your feet runs Flookers Brook, piped in 1865 by Hoole Local Board at a cost of £60 10s, the tubes being supplied by Thomas Brassey’s Canada Works Company. Thomas Brassey not only built Chester’s railway station but also railways all over Europe as well as in Canada, Australia, Argentina and India. He is commemorated by a plaque outside Chester Station.

community spirit BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Recently I was sitting in a traffic queue recently on Hoole Bridge, we were moving very slowly, when the sound of a siren echoed out over the cars. Instinctively people responded by moving the cars to one side or another giving the room needed for the ambulance to get through and travel on to the emergency it was attending. I thought to myself isn’t it great how people work together in a moment when they perceive an emergency need. I began to think about the same response right across our city and country as people have instinctively responded and worked together to provide help and support for the countries and community’s devastated by the different disasters across the world and in the UK in 2015. In my work as a leader of a Christian faith community I come across many situations where there is no evidence of people working together, where people are alone with no sense of community.

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

It sometimeS seems that most people are just looking out for number one, that is themselves and they have no time for others. In the geographical neighbourhoods around Chester communities are working hard to make where they live a better place to live. But this goal will only ever be achieved when we work together, churches around this city are working hard to serve the communities they are in but more often than not they work in isolation from others. Across Chester there are many partnerships; different organisations from the public sector, the private sector, and the community/ voluntary sector, the faith communities of Chester need to be a part of these partnerships so that we can be a contributing factor in working together and seeking the goal of “bring hope and making a difference for good”.

SOURCE FOR OUR HOPE I’ve been reflecting this past week on the word “hope”. What is the source of our hope? What’s the difference between a wish and a hope? Why is hope so important? What do you hope for in 2015? For the Christian, hope is an integral part of one’s faith and I would argue hope is also crucial to those who have little or no faith. Maybe the events of this past year can inspire us all to come together, those with faith in God, those with no faith to work together for the good of the whole and to bring hope. In some ways we can’t afford to wait until there is an emergency; today is a good time to start, together we can make a difference and be people of hope. Some of the activities that we at Hoole Baptist Church do, which we believe brings hope to some within our community, are often done in partnership, together with other churches and organisations projects like the West Cheshire Foodbank, the Chester and Ellesmere Port Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre, Street Pastors and Chester Schools Christian Work are all great examples of people working together to make a difference and be people of hope. I love this little definition of hope – “the joyful anticipation of something good” – you remember that feeling you had as a child on Christmas day – when you were hoping to get that one present you’ve been wanting for the past few months – that what hope feels like and as we grow up and become adults this sort of hope so easily evades us and we become cynical and disillusioned – my Christian faith inspires me to keep looking at life with the eyes of hope – as Paul wrote once to a group of His friends in Rome “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam.
