Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
SPEEDING CONCERNS
This month we are targeting motorists who are speeding along Hoole Lane. We’ve had lots of complaints from people living along Hoole Lane and from parents of children at Hoole CE Primary and Abbey Gate Schools who are concerned that people are driving too fast. It’s worse up near the top of Hoole Lane, near the Piper, where the road is wider, but cars are still going too fast by the time they reach Canadian Avenue. What drivers have got to be aware of is that there are children crossing the road and speed is the number one danger. We’ll have the speed gun out over the next month and beyond to catch those who are disregarding the 30mph speed limit. We may issue warning letters to those who are marginally over but anyone going significantly over the limit is likely to face prosecution. We are also cracking down on people using their mobiles while driving. We will have no hesitation in reporting drivers who we witness using their phones behind the wheel. It’s a big problem and drivers don’t seem to realise the dangers. We’re also warning people that they can still be prosecuted for using their phone even if they are in stationary traffic. l If you have any info on this, please contact the police on the non-emergency number 101.

HOT COLOURS FOR AUGUST
AUGUST is a month where perennials come to the fore with stunning colours and a plant for every type of soil. Daisy style flowers are always popular and one of the best for a sunny garden with soil that does not dry out are Heleniums. They grow to about 80cms tall and have yellow, orange or red flowers that last for a few weeks if you keep then dead headed. If you plant them in front of the potentially tall, light yellow daisy flowers of Helianthus Lemon Queen, you will get a long display of colour. Lemon Queen does need a heavier soil that does not dry out. For those with heavy wet soil, August is the best time of year for flowering. Two plants that will grow up each year from nothing to 2m are Eupatorium maculatum and Actaea simplex. Both like a fertile moisture retentive soil and are definitely for the back of the border. As you can see from the photo, the Eupatorium has tall stems topped with frothy heads of pink flowers and is planted behind Geranium Buxton Blue, a long flowering geranium. Actaea (previously known as Cimicifuga) simplex Brunette has dark purple foliage and the flowers are tall wands of white tapering bottlebrush flowers.
Another lovely climber for late summer is Clematis Perle d’Azur. This clematis has light blue blooms and has a long period of flowering. Plant with roses or to climb into a shrub that flowered earlier in the season and cut back hard in early spring to about 50cm. August is the last month to trim conifers so that new growth has time to mature before winter frosts. Plant seeds of Winter lettuce and Land Cress for salad leaves. Make sure your lift onions and dry in the sun before storage. Pumpkins and squashes can be lifted off the bare soil with straw to prevent damage. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Laskey Farm, Thelwall near Warrington is open on 13th and 14th August and you can see late flowering herbaceous borders, water garden and prairie planting with drifts of perennials. The Birches Mollington, near Chester is also open on 13th and 14th August with herbaceous borders, a grass and fern area , orchard and vegetable garden.

BREXIT: What does it mean for the housing market? Hoole Roundabout August 2016
In the uncertain climate following Brexit, the questions we at Somerville’s are being asked most frequently are how Brexit is affecting the property market and what advice can we give. Richard Wheeler, Director of Somerville’s with over 20 years’ experience in the property market, responded to the main issues saying “We are currently seeing a knee-jerk reaction with an immediate slowdown in sales shortly after the vote. “However, buyers are already returning to the market place and offers have begun to come in again this week. New instructions have been unaffected and there is still
a shortage of ‘quality homes’ within most price bands.” Whilst a cautious market is anticipated by Somerville’s over the coming months, Richard is also optimistic that potentially lower interest rates will boost the housing market and says “I expect to see a degree of cautiousness from families thinking about moving, who may decide to wait and see what happens over the next few months. “Whenever we have a period of uncertainty it creates short term turmoil in the market place which is then usually overhyped by media commentators with little or no knowledge. This may actually help support current prices by slowing the supply to a still
9
steady demand. There will also be a number of people waiting to see what happens with interest rates. If rates fall it will encourage buyers which will help boost confidence and again support prices, possibly even cause a small rise in AHP (average house price).” In summary, it is Richard’s view that the housing market is primarily driven by supply and demand not EU legislation or regulation and overall, the demand is still higher than the supply and will probably remain so for the next few years at least. If you are considering moving home and would like any further advice or a free market valuation please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hoole History Corner
John Ebo, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, examines the origins of Flookers WE know Flookersbrook today as that quiet back-water to Hoole Road fronted by two plantations but how did it come about? In fact what we see today is the rump of a much larger manorial estate which extended from near Bache to beyond the railway station and from the stream which was the extent of the city to Westminster Road or thereabouts. It took its name from that stream, the Flooker’s Brook, so named after the fishermen, flukers who caught flukes in the stream; time took care of the rest. As the stream meandered to the Dee it was referred to as Bache Brook and then finally flowed into the Dee at Finchett’s Gutter.
Hoole Heath in Lucian’s day had been granted by the Earls of Chester as a sanctuary for criminals. Nervous travellers had also to run the risk of encountering The Hound of Hell! - a huge, black slavering dog with “great white teeth like knives” believed to haunt the area. For this reason, the Fraternity of St. Anne’s set up a ‘cross’ (actually part of a statue) at the head of St. Anne’s Lakes - where the Flookersbrook public house is today. It was here that travellers stopped to pray for protection from the ‘devils’ ahead. The manorial estate was held by the Massey family of Kelsall prior to 1450 and later passed to the Bruens of Tarvin and the Sneyds before being bought by Sir Lawrence Smith of Hough, 1516 - 82 (1st MP for Chester 1545). He built the first Flookersbrook Hall, slightly to the north of the present Hall, which remained in that family until just after the Civil War. Chester was a Royalist town and an important centre and port. From 1643 to 46 it lay under siege by the Parliamentary Forces led by Sir William Brereton, Major General of Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lancashire. The first attack was on 18th July 1643 but this was repulsed. The city only occurred two casualties, both youths, who were jeering at the Parliamentary army from the city walls and should have really kept their heads down!
Early 19th century map of Chester showing Flookersbrook in top right hand corner The area was first mentioned in1195, in perhaps, the earliest tourist guide to Chester, De Laude Cestrie (‘Of the Praise of Chester’). The monk Lucian depicted the dangers of travelling from Chester through what we now know as Newton Hollows - “...it [the road] ... comes to a place which they rightly call the Valley of Demons (Hoole) (where) ... the wanderer... is despoiled by thieves and robbers”.
Before the siege great earth embankments were constructed to add to the fortifications of the city. Known as ‘Flookersbrook Flankers’ they extended across the northerly extent of the area enclosing much of the manor and near Flookersbrook Hall. This property was burnt down on the orders of the Governor of the city, Sir Abraham Shipman, lest it provide cover for the attacking forces. The embankments, however, were soon overrun and used for placement of cannon to target the city.
Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.
FLOOKERSBROOK
kersbrook, which dates back to the 12th century. Part two next month.
Flookersbrook Flankers 1643 After Chester surrendered and the Civil War ended the manor was sold to the Anderson Family in about 1645. It was John Anderson who built ‘Brook House’ on the site of the original Flookersbrook Hall in an octagonal design. Because of its unusual design it became known as ‘Anderson’s Folly’ and later just ‘The Folly’. By the end of the 18C the original single manor had been broken up into small estates. Subsequent landowners were Thomas Faulkner and John Lightfoot. The Folly was purchased by Charles Brown in 1860, and he effectively became Lord of the Manor. These three men had a major impact on developments in Flookersbrook in the 19th century, of which more in Part 2. FAD DIETS: DON’T DO THEM!
THE grapefruit diet, the cabbage diet, the liquid diet, the aloe Vera diet, the Hollywood diet, the raspberry keytones diet, the 1000 calorie a day diet, the no carb diet the list is endless but do any of them actually work and will you lose weight and more to the point are they good for you? With every fitness magazine or diet article there is something new on the market to entice you into thinking this is the best solution to the new you. The sad news is many are just a money making scheme to make you spend your hard earned cash and the results, although some are quick and the numbers on the scales go down they are NOT healthy and certainly no use for keeping your weight off. Take the grapefruit diet, eating grapefruit at every meal. Me personally couldn’t think of anything worse, come day three and nine grapefruit later, your body will almost be in starvation mode, you’ll begin to feel tired, emotionally drained and dam right starving! Sure the numbers on the scales will go down, but as soon as you eat normally they’ll go right back up and add some more. Your body will start to store the normal foods you eat as fat and your metabolism may start to slow down. Typically referred to as yo-yo dieting. The long and short of it is there is no quick fix, weight loss comes with commitment, hard work, a good healthy diet and time. I get asked many times as a personal trainer how can I lose weight, should I try this, should I try that. My answer is unless you can sustain that for life why do it. Weight loss doesn’t come from a quick fix it comes from lifestyle changes. Making keep fit your routine, making homemade healthy meals instead of takeaways and
24 Tel 01244350398
picking healthier options where possible. I often get people’s diet plans suggesting they don’t have time for breakfast or they are simply too busy for meals, like the above diets you are only starving your bodies and therefore when you eat again you just store it as fat. There is not a lot I will put my name too, certain fitness crazes I won’t do unless I think they are beneficial, just like certain diets I won’t join in to. I will put my name to Herbalife around since the 80’s and with Ronaldo as a keen supporter their science for these products goes above and beyond. I don’t recommend to skip meals and use shakes, nor does the Herbalife concept. Yet just adding the nutrients they provide to your daily diet to prevent you skipping meals I have viewed to be more than successful. One of my clients has lost five stone this year from this concept. Not starving themselves, not skipping meals, three lots of exercise per week and two shakes, snacks and healthy meal. So don’t reach for quick fixes they don’t work! Easy go...easy come! (and more) Don’t waste your money on products you don’t know a lot about just because a new sales rep says they work, do your research, if it’s been around a long time with varying reviews, look more into it. Reviews that are 100% high in rating may not always be accurate, as in truth not all things work for everyone. But personally ditch the fad diets and commit to a programme that works for you. Contact me for info on classes, personal training and more on Herbalife products. Good luck! Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786

Welcome to our patch
There was a fabulous turn out for the Hoole Allotments Open Day in July. The day was organised by the Hoole Allotment and Garden Association (HAGA) to showcase nearly 200 plots at the land off Panton Road / Canadian Avenue. During the day, funds were also raised for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd as well as HAGA. The allotments were given to the Hoole community in 1917 along with Alexandra Park as a means to improve leisure and recreation. Next year will be the 100th year for the allotments which have become so popular and some big events are planned to mark that centenary. Above: HAGA members Chris Caroe, Sue Caroe, Liz Newell and Helen Wilkinson get busy on the strawberry patch. More pictures on the following pages.
