Costa coffee set to take over old Natwest bank building THE old Natwest Bank building looks set to become a Costa coffee shop. The building, on the corner of Faulkner Street and Hoole Road, has lain empty for two years with many would-be investors put off by the costs of converting it. Reaction, so far, has been mixed with some traders believing that having a prestigious high street name will bring more visitors to Hoole. Others fear that it could affect the character of the area with its large number of independent shops and cafes. Cllr Angie Chidley said: “Hoole is unique because it’s got something a bit different. It would be a shame if that was lost. We don’t want Hoole to be like everywhere else.” Campaign group Notting Hoole said that Hoole is becoming a victim of its own success, with the bigger companies attracted to the area. On balance, the group says there are more positives than negatives and that new business should generally be welcomed. There were worries about Sainsbury’s opening up several years ago but those fears have since subsided. Tesco is currently believed to be converting the old Elms surgery on Hoole Road for one of its smaller stores.

Animals takeover local library Children will have the chance to meet exotic animals at local libraries this summer. Suitable for 6-12-year-olds there will be a number of different animals brought along for children to touch. The animals will be at Hoole Library, Westminster Road, on Monday 14th August, 2.30pm. Just turn up, free event.

Hoole PCSO saves a man’s life OUR very own PCSO Keith Bartlett has been praised for saving a man’s life on City Road. Keith has been praised for his ‘swift, decisive and professional’ actions after he performed life-saving CPR on a man who was found unconscious. The PCSO was on routine patrol when he saw the 42-year-old man lying unresponsive in the street. While checking his vital signs, Keith noticed he wasn’t breathing and immediately called for an Ambulance before commencing CPR. Within a minute the man had begun breathing again. Ambulance arrived at the scene and quickly took over with paramedics telling Keith his actions resulted in saving the man’s life. Keith said: “When I saw him lying on the ground, I didn’t hesitate to go over and help. All I kept thinking about was ensuring he started breathing again. As soon as I heard him let out a big gasp of air I was so relieved and happy.” Chief Inspector Mike Evans, of Chester Local Policing Unit, said: “I am extremely proud of Keith for his swift, decisive and professional actions in what was a very challenging situation. Keith’s professional and compassionate manner shows what an asset he is to our local community. “Without doubt Keith helped to save this man’s life.” The man was taken to Countess of Chester hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Toby will feel the heat in bike ride challenge

Toby Boram, his mate Andy Preston and their trusty mascot Felton Pedals will head off on a gruelling 1,500mile cycle ride to raise awareness and much needed funds for two charities close to their hearts. Forever Hounds Trust here in the UK and Galgos Del Sol in Spain. Toby, a 54-year-old Assistant Head Teacher at Archers Brook School, and Andy, a lecturer now living in Essex, are set to leave to a rapturous good luck cheer from Vets4Pets Chester, Brook Lane, on 30th July. The ride will see them cycling around 100 miles a day for two weeks in the blistering heat of France and into Spain, finally arriving on the 12th August into the San Javier Velodrome in Murcia accompanied by Team Roldan who have been named the ‘Best young cycling team’ in Spain! They are nicknamed the ‘Galgo Warriors’ due to their support and sponsorship of Galgos Del Sol. Toby said: “I just want to raise awareness and some funds so these two amazing charities can continue their work of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Greyhounds and Lurchers here in the UK and their Galgo and Podenco cousins in Spain. Both registered charities in the UK survive solely on the generosity and support of those donating and volunteering.” Toby is a longstanding supporter and volunteer at Forever Hounds Trust and was lucky enough also to see first hand the work Galgos Del Sol are doing out in Spain. “Forever Hounds Trust is special to me, we have two dogs homed from them,” he continued. “Their dedication to improving welfare and striving for the day when all Greyhounds and Lurchers are free from risk or need and the work Galgos Del Sol are doing in Spain to educate the communities and the next generations to the plight of these amazing dogs is what keeps us pedalling!” Vets4Pets Chester, Brook Lane, are hosting the leaving party in conjunction with an open day at the practice and people are welcome to come and wave them off. Jo and the team have supported Toby throughout and are one of the ride’s ‘Platinum Sponsors’ along with Lancky Dogs and Anna Hancock Designer and Illustrator whose funds have been paramount in getting this ride on the road! Andy added: “It isn’t going to be easy, neither of us are professional cyclists but we have been training hard, it has been a huge undertaking both physically and mentally with all the organizing and preparation but we think we are ready!” If you would like to show your support you can donate via www.gofundme.com/tobyuk2spain 12 Tel 01244 350398

The importance of After-Sales Service! It’s a popular misconception that the estate agents job finishes when a sale has been agreed. At Somerville’s Estate Agents we think that the after-sales service is just as important as the sales and marketing of your property

and that is why we have a dedicated sales progression service to personally assist you through the conveyancing stages of your sale.

Clare Hands (pictured), Sales Progression Manager, works closely with buyers, sellers, their solicitors and the rest of the chain throughout the sales process. Highly skilled, with a solution conscious “Overall, you don’t sell houses, you manage attitude, she co-ordinates time solutions. You dealt with a highly complex situation scales and investigates hold ups in our chain, compounded with time pressures, so that your move is a smooth and delivered. Had it not been for your proactive one. approach, this chain would have failed. You hit every issue head on and dealt with it, managing your communications to us, managing all our expectations and guiding us on what to do next. I would recommend to anybody who is looking to market a house to look no further, there simply is no point!” Phil Riley, Upton

Annie Somerville, Director of Somerville’s says: “Clare’s role is a crucial one to ensure smooth transactions of property sales. With her detailed knowledge of the conveyancing process and survey problems she can assist when issues are raised and ultimately ensure that fewer sales fall through.”

Old Money

Advertising

A study, which was commissioned by St. James’s Place in conjunction with Capital Economics, showed that there is an estimated £6.6 trillion of wealth held by those aged 55 years and over in the UK, of which some £920 billion will be gifted to younger generations over the next three decades (1). This generosity will not just help those receiving it, but will make a powerful contribution to the economy in the years ahead. Over the next 30 years, wealth transfer will potentially add £677 billion to the economy, or 1.2% of UK GDP each year – enough to fund the purchase of around 3.4 million homes for first time buyers (2), provide 21.2 million deposits (3), or pay for 24 million students’ tuition fees (4). “The economic contribution made by older people in the UK transferring wealth to the younger generations is huge – for every £1 transferred, £1.65 is generated for the UK economy (5),” says Iain Rayner, Joint Chief Operating Officer at St. James’s Place. “On average, 55 to 85 year olds transfer £40,000 to their children, grandchildren and family members, mainly for housing, university education or other major purchases. These are serious sums of money and, collectively, represent a vast wave of wealth that our research shows is about to be transferred. This will have a significant impact on the finances of the recipients and the wider economy as this wealth floods into the market,” Rayner adds. “Families need to think about how and when they intend to make transfers to maximise the impact and achieve the most beneficial tax treatment – and lucky recipients really need to think about how and when to best deploy these gifts to help them achieve their financial goals.” The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. (1) St. James’s Place commissioned research carried out by Capital Economics to a sample of 2,002 UK nationally representative adults aged over 55 years, conducted between 1st and 6th of March 2017. Coffee and cake fund raiser Bartletts Solicitors and residents of Hoole raised a cuppa and a cake to toast two charities at a fundraising coffee morning recently. The team at Bartletts invited local residents, clients, friends and family to their Coffee and Cake Morning at Hoole Community Centre to raise money for MacMillan Cancer and Parkinsons UK. More than 40 people tucked into a host of delicious cakes at the event, raising £640 for both charities. Event organiser Nina Sperring, from Bartletts, said: “There was a great atmosphere at the event and we had so many tasty treats to tempt people. Thank you to everyone in the local community of Hoole who donated prizes for our raffle, gave us goodies or who came along to help us raise so much for our chosen charities. “As a firm, we take every opportunity to get involved in the local community and to give something back. This coffee morning was a great success – raising money for charity, getting local people together and raising awareness of the fantastic facilities on offer at the Hoole Community Centre.” Top: The team at Bartletts with Sarah Green from Parkinson’s UK and Amy Hulston from Macmillan Cancer Support. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

SUMMER HOLIDAY BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER We’re all going on a summer holiday, No more working for a week or two. Fun and laughter on our summer holiday, No more worries for me or you, for a week or two. We’re going where the sun shines brightly, We’re going where the sea is blue. We’ve seen it on the movies, Now let’s see if it’s true.

Childhood holidays give me some of my fondest memories of growing up. The “long summer holidays” seemed to last forever. During these holidays, as a family, we would go somewhere by the sea and living in Stoke many of my holidays were spent on the North Wales Coast, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and Prestatyn. Chester for my dad was not an enjoyable experience as we travelled by car, there was no A55 in the 70’s and Chester was something of a bottleneck as we had to go out on the coast road, which meant going through Saltney. I remember vividly the railway bridge in Saltney with the advert to North Wales Zoo on it!

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 29 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

As a look back I’m sure my memory plays tricks on me, it tries to convince me that all my summer holidays were hot and sunny, the truth is that I only remember the days when I was outside and playing or on a beach which was when the sun was shining I don’t really remember the days sitting inside a caravan when it was poring down with rain!! It is true, however what a difference a bit of sun does make, this year we seemed to have some sunshine so far in June and July these few blocks of sunny days are quickly followed up with rainy and colder ones! I am convinced that the weather has a major effect on the psychology of the nation. Wouldn’t it be great if we could guarantee the next few weeks with wall to wall sunshine, we would all feel better and get out of the house – the BBQ would be out every weekend and we would enter into more conversations with our neighbours as we were all out and about much more! However, if we didn’t have the British weather then what would we talk about? A comment about the weather is the opening line to many conversations and this is due primarily I think, to the fact that in England we can have all 4 seasons in one day, our weather is so changeable. Maybe you have had your holiday or you are off in the next couple of weeks, Holidays are important in the rhythm of our busy and hectic lives, it is important that take time to stop even if just for a few days if we can’t afford a week away. Many of us find it hard to stop we fill our lives with so much activity but we all need to find time to stop, find rest and recharge our batteries. The bible calls this “Sabbath”, and it was the primary reason why one day a week everyone and everything thing slowed down and people took time to stop and rest. Here at HBC Chester we cancel all our meetings over the school summer holidays except Sunday mornings so we can have some space to rest as we are such a busy church the rest of the year!! So for me holidays give me the opportunity to reflect back on the previous year, to take stock of what I have achieved and to give thanks to God for the many blessings I have experienced. Maybe this year you too might use your holiday time to give yourself time to rest, to count your blessings and to acknowledge God’s goodness. . Let’s hope these summer holidays leave us recharged and refreshed so then we can face September and our usual routines of work and home life with renewed vigour and enthusiasm.

Gio’s tips for staying safe online

Gio is an IT buddy volunteer at Hoole Community Centre and here are his tips for staying safe online.

‘MICROSOFT’ TELEPHONE CALLS My (personal) Number One Tip: Though we are here to help you (and your computer) stay safe online, there is something else that is just as important - Microsoft Telephone Calls!!! At one point, almost everyone will receive a telephone call from a team claiming to be Microsoft Support, and it goes something like this… “Hello, this is “person’s name” calling from Microsoft Support. I just want to make you aware that your computer has issues and is “beaconing” (or has been flagged up) on the Internet and I would like to help you fix this if you have a few moments”…. If you receive a telephone call and the person on the phone says anything similar to the above, don’t waste your time listening to another word they say and

HANG UP IMMEDIATELY!!

RULE OF THUMB – If anyone telephones you and offers to help fix a problem with your computer on the network, put the phone down immediately, unless you or one of your family have logged a call with that company regarding a specific issue. By following the advice and tips listed in this article, you will be well on your way to surfing the web safely and with peace of mind.

Hoole History Corner

Linda Webb, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, explains the links between Ho Continuing Chas Sumner’s talk to Hoole History & Heritage Society about Chester Football Club’s early years. Thomas Carline and Chester Football Club just before the First World War. Before the First World War Chester Football Club played in the Combination League, of which it was a founder member in 1890. On the pitch, Chester had been very successful in the Combination, finishing runners-up for five consecutive seasons, before finally winning the title in the 1909. However, in 1910, the club elected to move to the Lancashire Combination, a league that offered a higher standard of football, and after promotion, in the first season, settled in mid-table in Division 1. Thomas Carline lived in Hamilton Street, Hoole, for over 10 years. He later moved to Backford. After school, he worked for Lever Bros at its office in the Liver Building, Liverpool. Chas Sumner found the first mention of Thomas with Chester F.C. in January 1913, playing for the reserves in the West Cheshire League. He played 23 league games in goal for the club before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. On 22nd January 1913, he played for the first team in a Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Crewe, during which he saved a penalty and was reported to have played a fine game. Three days later, he represented the club in a Welsh Cup match against a South Wales village team, Troedyrhiw. Thomas replaced regular goalkeeper James Fletcher, a former Carlisle and Exeter player, for the next match, after Chester was heavily beaten 6-1 by Walkden Central in March. He had a sound League debut against Chorley, despite a narrow defeat, and, after featuring in the next four games, he was one of only four players retained for the 1913/14 season. Thomas started the campaign as first choice goalkeeper in 1913 and played in every game up to the end of 1913. It wasn’t all plain sailing, since he was reported to have scored an own goal in a 4-0 defeat at Barrow in September. In a Welsh Cup tie against Swansea in January 1914, however, he had a good game and, after the Swans had hit the post with a

penalty, he made a wonderful save from the rebound. The Swansea game seemed to mark a turning point for Thomas A few days after this game, he was at fault for one of the goals in a Cheshire Senior Cup tie at Macclesfield. He lost his place in the team having missed the league game at Walkden Central through illness the following week. By the end of February 1914 it was mentioned that he did not appear to have recovered his previous good form. In a disappointing performance by the whole team, Thomas was beaten by two goals he should have saved when played his last game in goal

en Hoole and the city’s football club. in a 2-2 draw with Chorley on February 14th. At the end of February he featured in a 3-1 defeat at Heywood United, which was the last mention of Thomas at the football club. Thomas Carline and the First World War There is more to be learned about Thomas during the years of the First World War, and this is being looked into by Dave Rees from Hoole History & Heritage Society. His connection with Chester Football Club came from the study of the names listed on the Hoole War Memorial on Hoole Road, and Hoole Rolls of Honour. Dave Rees has provided the following record to date,

Part Two and the details of his place of work at Lever Bros. Liverpool. On 4th September 1914 Thomas enlisted in the 18th Battalion King’s (Liverpool) Regiment, one of the “Liverpool Pals” Battalions. He was promoted to sergeant before he arrived in France on the 7th of November 1915. He was twice wounded in action, transferring to the 12th Battalion in October 1917. Thomas then returned home to undertake officer training and he married. Following training, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and returned to the Front. At the Front, he was attached to the 15th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Thomas was killed in action on 30th September 1918. After the war, his name was listed on the Hoole War Memorial, to be honoured and remembered along with others from Hoole who had given their lives during the war.
