Snow is on its way!

The area is well known for its thermal hot springs and these together with several excellent swimming pools, which generally have saunas, Turkish baths and fitness rooms attached, allow for a relaxing experience off the slopes.

Time to get the skis out

Wow... it’s been a hot one! Have you have been enjoying the sun, wishing for a pool, a bath of ice or a snow drift to freakishly appear? Unfortunately, snow is not guaranteed in the UK, but it is in Bulgaria. So if you are looking forward to snow this winter and enjoy being active, then let Global Travel Hoole organise your winter skiing in Bankso. Tucked into the foothills of the Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria, the ski resort town of Bansko is charming and historic against its stunning alpine backdrop. Bansko's alpine skiing, hiking, and rock climbing opportunities are extensive, and its culture and history, stretching back to the 10th century, is rich and vibrant with traditional taverna-style cuisine and colourful folklore. The traditional stone and wooden buildings are an integral part of its charm and character and many relics and monuments survive from its past. While Bansko is wellknown for its alpine skiing, the town is also conveniently near the resort of Shiligarnika, which boasts Bulgaria's best downhill skiing.

The nightlife in Bansko is not as wild as in some of Bulgaria's other popular holiday resorts, like Borovets and Pamporovo. This small, old-fashioned town takes its tone from the quiet locals, who prefer to while away the evenings in the large selection of low-ceilinged taverns and pubs before a roaring fire. Most offer entertainment in the form of local musicians or folk orchestras, particularly during the winter ski season.

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

Don’t block the pavements Motorists who park on the pavements have been urged to spare a thought for pedestrians who often struggle to get past. Tickets have been issued in recent weeks in places such as Clare Avenue and Hewitt Street after parked cars completely blocked the pavements, making it impossible for pushchairs and wheelchairs to get through. This means that people have been forced to go on the road to get past, which is clearly dangerous. It has been a problem in Hoole for many years, with the tight streets and increasing car ownership which makes parking space a scarce resource. l A prolific shoplifter has been jailed after he was spotted on CCTV. Blacon resident Robert Murphy had a particular fondness for stealing meat from grocery stores in Hoole. Fortunately, he was identified on CCTV by local PCSO Keith Bartlett and subsequently brought to trial where he was jailed for four months. l A thief broke into a house on Shavington Avenue and stole a set of car keys which he used to take the owner’s car parked outside. l The hot summer weather has been encouraging lots of people to visit the parks in Hoole. The only downside is that there has been more vandalism in Alexandra Park, particularly at a derelict building which has been set on fire. It seems as if young people are climbing onto the roof of the building and vandalising it. PCSO Keith Bartlett says that patrols have been stepped up and he hopes that people stay off the building.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

After the dry spell.....

A

fter the dry period in early summer that caused some plant to die, many late summer perennials will be flowering less.

Plants that enjoy the dry weather in late summer include Echinops ritro or Globe Thistle. They will grow to 1.5m tall and have soft thistle shaped leaves with tall stems bearing golf ball sized blue flowers. The need support but do well at the back of borders in full sun and well drained soils. Another blue plant is the Eryngiums or Sea Holly. These are shorter plants, to 75cm tall with teazle like blue spiky flowers. They also love full sun and well drained soils. Veronicas are perennials with small and tall varieties in pink, white and blue which are good for sunny positions but need more moisture. Another good plant for sun is Verbena bonariensis which has tall stiff stems topped with heads of small purple flowers. Again, it takes up little space in the ground and lasts for weeks. Not hardy in severe winters but it will self seed. Those of you that have permanently damp soil, late summer is great for flowers. In August the purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria has tall spikes of magenta pink flowers. A quirky plant for those with damp soil and space for it to wander, try Lysimachia clethroides (up to 60cm) with its white foxtail flowers. They remind me of meerkats on the lookout! If you have an established hellebore plant in the garden, look under the large leaves and you may find small seedlings already growing. Pot them up or move them out into more space so they can grow on. Keep beans, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes well watered in summer. Once the squashes and pumpkins have grown to size the foliage should die off gradually. Keep them outside to ripen the skin and keep any foliage off the ripening pumpkins. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Laskey Farm, Thelwell is open on 11th and 12th August with many interesting features including a series of pools and water features with superb poolside planting, herbaceous borders and a maze of grasses and prairie style planting. Abbeywood near Delamere is open on 12th August. This garden has a stunning exotic garden full of colour, formal gardens leading out into huge borders filled with sweeping planting of grasses and perennials.

Hoole History Corner

Linda Webb, from Hoole History, explains one important legacy of Hoole Urban Distr In 1894, when Hoole Urban District Council was formed, it had already secured the incorporation of part of the Township of Newton-by-Chester, between the Hoole Road and the Cheshire Lines Railway into the District. There were later boundary adjustments. In 1936, Newton–by-Chester was dissolved and areas of Newton and Plas Newton, shown on the 1947 map, were incorporated into Hoole Urban District, along with 99 acres of Hoole Village. The ring road was emerging as a north east boundary. Also in 1936, Great Boughton gained 18 acres from the District, losing 5 acres back to Hoole Urban District on its south easterly boundary.

community of interest existing in the district and I commend it without hesitation to both resident and visitor.” Recently more documents about Local Government in Cheshire have become available, including those drawn up by Hoole Urban District Council in its last days. The last meeting of the District Council took place on March 8th 1954, and the District was incorporated into Chester Council on April 1st 1954. In its preparations for the change, the District Council drew up a list of properties, including parks and open green spaces, which were to be transferred by order to Chester Council. This document gives the details of all the land purchased for this statutory purpose by the District Council between 1894 and 1954, and under which Acts of Parliament it was acquired. Alexandra Park, with its buildings and structures, contains almost eight acres, 6.231 acres adjoining Canadian Avenue and Panton Road, and 1.653 acres adjoining Canadian Avenue and Hoole Road. The document confirms the legal fact that Alexandra Park

In 1947, the Official Handbook and Guide to the District, which covered the expanded Council area, was published. The guide described how the Council worked to establish a good standard of Public Health for residents, and emphasised the parks and open green spaces available for public leisure and recreation. Plans for the further development of housing were also outlined. Local services, places of worship, and the clubs and societies of the area were listed. As Chairman of the Hoole Urban District Council, Mr John R. Hughes welcomed the publication of the Official Handbook and Guide, saying “I am certain that this publication will reinforce the already strong

District Council, which ran from 1894-1954.

Alexandra Park from the Official Guide was acquired under the 1875 Public Health Act for the benefit and pleasure of the people of Hoole, and that it was purchased by funding from the ratepayers of Hoole. A surprise in the document is the fact that Walker Street Playground (0.238 acres) was acquired under the same act and for the same purposes and is thus similarly protected. Hoole Allotments, at the rear of properties on the north side of Hoole Lane and the east side of Canadian Avenue were purchased under the Small Holdings and Allotments Act. 1908. No.3 Bowling Green and its building and structures, (0.429 acres) on the south side of Panton Road extension, was created after the Bowling Greens of Alexandra Park, under the Physical Training and Recreation Act. 1937. What became Coronation Playing Fields, was opened by His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on 29th April 1953, just over four weeks before the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth on 2nd June of that year. The Fields were from two parcels of land. The first,

9.742 acres of Playing field on the south side of and fronting Hoole Road, and the second, a ‘hockey field’, measuring 1.468 acres of land at the western end of Park Drive, were combined to create the Coronation Playing Fields. Both parcels of land were acquired under the Physical Training and Recreation Act. 1937. The total area of land purchased for the statutory purpose of providing public leisure and recreation was, and remains, 32.28 acres of land. The orders for all properties transferred from Hoole Urban District Council to Chester Council came into effect on 1st April 1954, the ‘Vesting Day’ of the expanded Council. These properties were then transferred by order, without modification, to Cheshire West and Chester Council, coming into effect on ‘Vesting Day’ 1st April 2009 in whose stewardship the parks and open green spaces now rest for the foreseeable future. This article is available on the Hoole History website http://hoolehistorysoc.btck.co.uk/ LeisureRecreationinHoole/HooleParksGreenSpaces.

The next event of HH&HS is on Wednesday 1st August when Phil Cook will be leading one or more walking tours in the area outside of Chester Station. This is to coincide with a general celebration, by parties involved in the railway service, of the opening of the Station in 1848. Additionally, HH&HS will have a stall at the Station from 10am-3pm. All details and times are yet to be confirmed but will be on the HH&HS website before the day.

Hayley’s health and fitness

Losing the baby weight Having a baby is undoubtably one of the biggest things that will change your body. Not only will you gain fat but many find their overall shape changes. So once baby is out and reality hits it no wonder many women are anxious to get back to their old self. With celebs “bouncing back” in only a few weeks what are they doing that the majority of us aren’t to get back to their former selves? I think the misconception is that breast feeding will help you lose weight on its own. Yes, breast feeding burns calories, but in order to get a good supply of milk you must be having enough calories to keep the supply up. You’ll need an additional 400-500 calories to ensure a good supply if you’re trying to diet as well as breast feed many women feel they are fighting a losing battle. They often become over tired, snack on unhealthy food as they can’t be bothered cooking and become feeling sluggish and fatigued. The trick is to eat little and often and fill up on healthy high protein foods but with an adequate supply of carbohydrates to keep you going. Carbohydrates need to be the good unrefined ones, snack on raw veg and humus as snack, or some rice cakes and peanut butter perfect for on the go. It’s important to not get hung up on how quick everyone else losing their baby weight. Many factors will affect how quick you lose them LBS. Some people only gain a small amount of weight during pregnancy where as some ladies gain 4-5 stone. In reality the more weight you gained the more time it may take to get back off. Taking baby out for brisk walks is a good way to start getting back to your current state. Gentle exercise once you have been given the ok from the doctor is perfect. But ensure you build up gradually. I had very little time off training after giving birth and was in fact still trampolining (yes, it is safe) right up until the night of going into labour, yet once given birth I was so unfit even trying to jog on treadmill. I built it up

40 Tel 01244350398

gradually, listened to my body and did a little at a time. Over 4-6 weeks the difference was noticeable and what was once a struggle began to again feel easy. Over doing it though especially after a c section can have a negative effect. Give your body enough time to recover, this doesn’t mean waiting months and months (there is no excuse for leaving it this long) but start doing little bits as soon as everything is healed and you feel well enough to go out. Exercise in itself will make a positive effect to your overall mind set, helping reduce post-natal depression and boost endorphins making you feel better in yourself. Remember to eat good foods and drink plenty of water, your body has been through a major trauma, so eating the right foods to help it repair is crucial. How can you expect to get the fat off when Chinese and takeaways are your evening meals? Fruit, veg, lean meats and complex carbs are essential for maintaining a healthy diet. Exercise when pregnant, years ago no one really knew enough about it to say it was safe. So as soon as you found out you were expecting everything stopped. Yet now its encouraged to keep active during your pregnancy. Not only will you help prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, it will keep you fit and more likely to a quick and easier birth. If you have always been into keep fit, stay at what you enjoy as long it’s not a contact sport and keep it low impact. It’s important if you haven’t exercised not to start anything new though as your body isn’t used to it. By staying active you are more likely to get your old shape back in a shorter amount of time. Just listen to your body and always check with your doctor or midwife. Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786

COMMUNITY SPIRIT BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

Recently I was sitting in a traffic queue recently on Hoole Bridge, we were moving very slowly, when the sound of a siren echoed out over the cars. Instinctively people responded by moving the cars to one side or another giving the room needed for the ambulance to get through and travel on to the emergency it was attending. I thought to myself isn’t it great how people work together in a moment when they perceive an emergency need. I began to think about the same response right across our city and country as people have instinctively responded and worked together to provide help and support for the countries and community’s devastated by the different disasters across the world and in the UK in 2018. In my work as a leader of a Christian faith community I come across many situations where there is no evidence of people working together, where people are alone with no sense of community. It sometimes seems that most people are just looking out for number one, that is themselves and they have no time for others. In the geographical neighbourhoods around Chester communities are working hard to make where they live a better place to live. But this goal will only ever be achieved when we

work together, churches around this city are working hard to serve the communities they are in but more often than not they work in isolation from others. Across Chester there are many partnerships; different organisations from the public sector, the private sector, and the community/ voluntary sector, the faith communities of Chester need to be a part of these partnerships so that we can be a contributing factor in working together and seeking the goal of “bring hope and making a difference for good”. I’ve been reflecting this past week on the word “hope”. What is the source of our hope? What’s the difference between a wish and a hope? Why is hope so important? What do you hope for in 2018? For the Christian, hope is an integral part of one’s faith and I would argue hope is also crucial to those who have little or no faith. Maybe the events of this past year can inspire us all to come together, those with faith in God, those with no faith to work together for the good of the whole and to bring hope. In some ways we can’t afford to wait until there is an emergency; today is a good time to start, together we can make a difference and be people of hope. Some of the activities that we, at Hoole Baptist Church do, we believe bring hope to some within our community, are often done in partnership, together

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 30 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader. with other churches and organisations projects like the West Cheshire Foodbank, Street Pastors, Oasis of Miracles Coffee Shop and Chester Schools Christian Work are all great examples of people working together to make a difference and be people of hope. I love this little definition of hope – “the joyful anticipation of something good” – you remember that feeling you had as a child on Christmas day – when you were hoping to get that one present you’ve been wanting for the past few months – that what hope feels like and as we grow up and become adults this sort of hope so easily evades us and we become cynical and disillusioned – my Christian faith inspires me to keep looking at life with the eyes of hope – as Paul wrote once to a group of His friends in Rome “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
