WELL done to the organisers of the Hoole Christmas lights. It was another great switch-on and always serves to show Hoole in a great light! If you are shopping in Hoole this December you will notice several changes in Faulkner Street and Charles Street with businesses opening and closing. Elsewhere in the magazine we have got Jonathan Seddon’s financial column, Thought for the Month with Andy Glover, community info and much more. Happy Christmas Hoole Roundabout December 2014

from our family to yours! WE’RE all getting a little bit excited about Christmas at Somerville’s. We have had an exciting and successful first year and want to wish our customers, friends and family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! As we are a family run business we thought we would share with you a Somerville family tradition – Grandma’s White Christmas cake recipe!
Topped with homemade marzipan and royal icing, this twist on the traditional Christmas cake is made with no treacle and is lighter in texture and taste. You can vary the recipe by changing the amount and type of fruit and nuts you add. Unlike traditional Christmas cakes it doesn’t keep so long so should be made two to three days before serving. We hope you enjoy it
Ingredients
For the almond paste:
For the cake:
50g/2oz glace cherries 50g/2oz glace pineapple 150g/6oz butter 150g/6oz caster sugar 2 large eggs 150g/6oz plain flour ½ level tsp baking powder 75g/3oz ground almonds 50g/2oz shelled Brazil nuts
For the almond paste: 75g/3oz icing sugar 75g/3oz caster sugar 50g/2oz ground almonds 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon lemon juice
For the icing:
1lb 2oz/500g icing sugar 2 egg whites 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon glycerine
Method:
• Wash the syrupy coating from cherries and pineapple in warm water and then pat dry. • Cut cherries in half, coarsely chop pineapple, halve the nuts and mix together. • Cream butter and sugar until light. Beat in the eggs. • Fold in the flour, ground almonds and baking powder then add the fruit and nuts. • Spoon into a greased and lined 18cm/7inch round deep cake tin, slightly hollow out centre. • Bake at 160ºC/gas mark 3 for 1½ hours. Leave to cool.
• Sieve the sugars into a bowl. Add ground almonds and mix well. • Add the egg and lemon juice and mix together well. • Brush the cake with lemon curd or egg white and spread the paste evenly over the cake.
For the royal icing:
• Crack eggs whites into a bowl and stir in icing sugar until a thick paste is formed. • Whisk with a hand blender to form stiff peaks before stirring in glycerine and lemon juice and spread over your cake with a palette knife (ensuring top is level). • Create a snow scene effect by teasing icing into small peaks with a standard knife.

This unique workout combines the elements of Pilates, yoga, resistance training and ballet into a highly effective regime performed on the mat and at a ballet barre. The technique utilises the body’s own resistance in conjunction with weights, bands and small balls. The effect is a long, lean dancer’s body without being a dancer! The low impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, whilst protecting the joints. Small isometric contractions are performed and integrated with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness.

Park revamp celebration A celebration has taken place to officially launch the revamped St Anne’s Park in Newtown. Over the past year residents and local community groups have met to discuss plans and improvements which have been funded by contributions made by developers of new buildings in the local area. Plans included a more modern space for residents of all ages and it was important to preserve some of the art work already established in the park in recognition of the past work undertaken by residents. The park now has a Multi Use Games Area along side new play equipment for children and Green Gym equipment for adults. The space has been designed with improved paths for better access and landscaping includes large boulders to act as informal seating to compliment the new benches. Additional planting will take place later in the year. Enjoying the celebration event at St Anne’s Park is Jane Davies from Sanctuary Housing, Councillor Samantha Dixon, Ron Graves, Chair of the Newtown Residents’ Association and Council Locality Officer Jan Walters. -----------------------------------------------------------------Steamed Up Handles & Hinges Door & Window locks Windows? too hard to handle? s bigger and brighter There was an enormous turn-out at the Hoole Christmas Lights switch-on. The event seems to get bigger and more popular each year with crowds thronging Faulkner Street and Charles Street on Saturday 15th November. This year, BBC Breakfast TV host Louise Minchin was the special guest invited to switch on the illuminations. Left: The Rev Andy Glover, from Hoole Baptist Church, and friends enjoyed the occasion. Has fatherhood turned me I have become my father. Not only have I recognised the traits, I think I am upping the ante for grumpy old man status.
To be fair, I’ve still got a few years left to take the title to a whole new level. I’d like to blame the sudden dip in temperature or the poor attempts at one some call ‘parking’ but unfortunately I can only blame genetics. In much the same way that I blame them for the hair receding to half way down my back, the frown attempting to drag it back again, the beer became more expensive, the music - just a noise and technology making it painfully clear it is not my friend. I am destined to find discord in all that surrounds me.
The cliché ‘people person’ has finally fallen from my CV. My customer service role is now angled far from dealing directly with customers and where possible, I will avoid any form of human contact unless it is by prior appointment. My current role allows me to plug into my ipod and focus solely on my work. On those days I forget to charge it, I simply pop in the ear buds and tuck the unplugged cable into a 30 Tel 01244 350398
pocket so all small talk and interruptions are avoided. *top tip: Plug your headphones into a banana. Everyone will leave you alone twice as much as if it was plugged into an MP3 player - you can thank me for this later*
Weekends are most precious to me. If I’ve not made plans then I’m on total lock down. The door will go unanswered as will text messages and phone calls. Any voice breaking the silence is met with hostility. Who needs people interfering with your plans to sit around in your pants for 12 hours? No, people just clutter things up. Let’s be honest, the human is an inconsistent design. It’s noisy, leaks fluids, has zero protection from drop damage and can be killed by bees or peanuts.
CARRIER BAGS
I nipped across the border to Tesco’s where they notoriously charge you for carrier bags. It was a quick shop. Just a basket’s worth. And I have nothing against the charging for plastic carrier bags for all the environmental issues and for the snobbery of saying, ‘no thanks, I remembered to bring my own’ and whacking out the Waitrose bags-for-
www.hooleroundabout.com
life. I don’t need your bags. I have the crème-de-la crème of carriers right here. Bam. But I got home and I’d forgotten the Jamaican ginger cake! DIvine retribution? I’ve no idea how pregnant women dealing with cravings cope when forced to go cold turkey. I get a taste for something and I’m obsessed. My significant other thinks I have serial OCD.
“You need to get out more!” echoed from the front room and so I slump up to Sainsbury’s supposedly on that advise but really on the hunt for the illusive spiced loaf. The orange glow dimmed slightly. The shelf was empty. I headed to the Co-op but there seemed to be a sudden shortage of baked ginger goods in Notting Hoole and as a result, the grumpy old man ups his game.
“We have a malt loaf!” She says and points to the malt loaf. I can see it’s a malt loaf because it says ‘malt loaf’ on its bright yellow malt loafy packet. It does not, however, say Jamaican ginger cake and it does not contain Jamaican ginger cake. I thank her for pointing out the malt loaf and refrain from further communication. I exit the store. I do not purchase the malt loaf.

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
me into a grumpy old man? PAVEMENT ETIQUETTE
I step out onto Faulkner Street and wander back in the direction of home. It’s late and the shops are shutting. A couple step out of the Brom and head towards me. They are one of those kind of couple. Not the sought that are confident and content, these are the insecure kind. The kind that cannot let go of each other.
The pavement is just wide enough for two people to pass but the couple are unable to move aside or even attempt a single file formation. Their faces convey their fears. If they let go, one of them will most certainly be swallowed up by the gutter and never been seen again and so they avoid eye contact, grip each other until their knuckles turn white and march on. I am forced to stand my ground and brace myself for the shoulder barge or step into the road and risk my own life at the hands of the infamous Notting Hoole traffic. They’re young and innocent and I am too old for this and I lose my nerve and step aside. A car misses my toes by an inch as it signals left and pulls in to the right. The pumpkins in the window of the neighbouring houses mock me. The black and white cat that
guards the entrance to the car park on Phillip Street eyes me suspiciously. He knows I crumbled. He can sense my disappointment but he knows me well enough to leave me alone.
The Vauxhall driver is crunching his gears as he parks in what he thinks is the tightest space on the street. She’s not there with the set square to assist him and he looks slightly bemused when he gets out and notices that the space could actually fit a small ocean liner. If it wasn’t so cold, I would have applauded that fact that he still managed to pack smack bang in the middle. I guess there are some things you can rely on. The little gripes are part of my bubble. They are part
of my routine. When the sun shines, Hoole can be picture postcard of wonder and when it’s throwing its damp leaves about and growing darker by the day it’s easy to focus on the negative.
To break through the doom and gloom I phone my Dad and catch up with the family news. I book a table at the Sticky Walnut and treat myself to some posh nosh with couples who can let go of each other long enough to use cutlery and I pop back to Tesco’s swinging my Waitrose bags to stock up on ginger cake. And, just to get that pep talk/reassurance, I park in the disabled spaces and loiter until a bunch of strangers start yelling that there is nothing wrong with me.

Look up....
and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. meaning of christmas BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
I
magine we are playing All Star Family Fortunes and I was Vernon Kay and we asked 100 people what they most associate with Christmas, what would be the top 5 answers they would give? There are any number of things that have become part and parcel of Christmas, some things we love others we hate! In your opinion, what’s critical to Christmas? What’s the one thing that if you were to get rid of it Christmas would Andy Glover has lived in become unrecognisable? If you had to ditch one thing from Christmas Hoole with his wife Sue what would you choose? Turkey, mulled wine, crackers, the Queen’s for 26 years. Andy began Speech, Ant & Dec, Wham’s Last Christmas, the work’s Christmas at Hoole Baptist Church, party, Carols, Christmas Shopping, Sports Personality of the Year, on Westminster Road, Carols from Kings, Decorations, the EastEnders Christmas Special. as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and Of course there are some things that you can ditch and it’s still now Team Leader. recognisable as Christmas. Personally, I’m very happy to do without the brussel sprouts, sherry and the Wizard of Oz that were a permanent feature of my childhood. But I want to suggest that there’s one thing that if you get rid of it then all you’re left with is a bog standard Christmas. It’s adequate; but it’s not deluxe. The trouble is that for many of us is that’s what we’ve settled for. I know it’s what every church leader says at this time of year but bear with me, not only do I get paid to say this, I actually believe it! It’s been said that if you take Christ out of Christmas then all you’re left with is a mess - xmas. I think that’s overstating it, but I like what he’s done there! Can I suggest that if you get rid of Jesus Christ then you’ve ripped the heart out of Christmas? He’s what Christmas is all about. They even named it after him! He’s the reason for the season. But we’ve lost sight of that amongst the tinsel, presents and stress. The Gospel of Luke tells us that the first visitors at the stable maternity ward were the Shepherds. They went to Bethlehem because they knew that Jesus’ birth was good news of great joy for all people. And so if you take the Christ out of Christmas then what you’re left with is bad news of real misery for everyone. It’s hard to get in the festive spirit with that sort of strap line, isn’t it?! I’m not an idiot; I know that many of us are happy to settle for a Christ-less Christmas. We’re content with the bog standard version. That’s your decision! But why would you go for a Christmas that’s satisfactory, sufficient, passable or tolerable when you can have one that rocks! Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.” During this Christmas season, may you be blessed with the spirit of the season, which is peace, the gladness of the season, which is hope, and the heart of the season, which is love. Finally, maybe you would like to join us for an evening for all the family on this festive occasion with atmospheric singing of carols, old and new, traditional and modern, sung by candlelight along with readings to celebrate Christmas. The HBC “Carols by Candlelight” will take place at 7pm on Monday 22nd December at Chester City Mission, Hunter Street, Chester, CH1 2AR.; it will be followed by coffee and mince pies. This is a great opportunity to step aside from all the hustle and bustle of all the preparations for Christmas and take some time to reflect on the heart of Christmas which is the birth of Jesus Christ.

Hoole Church of England Primary School has completed its fifth successive ‘Hooli’ treasure trail, joining the heart of the community alongside local retailers and businesses. This year 57 examples of pupils’ artwork - with a theme of dinosaurs - were placed in village shops and community hotspots over the autumn half term period for local residents and pupils to track down. Blank forms were available from Faulkner Street’s Mr Fruity greengrocer shop for anyone to take part. Hoole CE Primary School pupils who took part were entered into a drawer to switch on the Faulkner Street Christmas lights on Saturday 15th November.
