One-man crime wave is caged A Chester burglar who broke into four people’s homes in one nightly spree is now serving more than two years behind bars. Benjamin Nicholson, 30, of Brook Street, was handed a 27-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to four burglary offences at Chester Crown Court on Monday, 30 October. The court heard how one evening in September Nicholson began by breaking into a house on Beaconsfield Street, Boughton and stole a handbag containing cash and bank cards. Nicholson then moved on to three addresses on Hoole Lane. He attempted to steal another handbag however having being caught by the victim inside the flat at the time, he left without it. At the third property Nicholson stole a laptop and after targeting the fourth house he took a handbag. Following information from the public, Nicholson was identified as a suspect and after a search of his home he was arrested. During sentencing the Judge said despite Nicholson being confronted by one of his victims he continued to commit his crimes. Detective Sergeant Nick Henderson, of Chester CID, said: “Nicholson’s actions that night were abhorrent and he has no respect for other people and their property. Despite being caught by one of his victims he thought he was unstoppable and continued to commit his crime across Chester to fund his drug habit. “We are really pleased with Nicholson’s sentencing and being able to return some of the items back to the victims.”

Hoole brothers rememb A visit to the World War One battlefields was given extra poignance for Jean Houston whose uncles were killed in action and have no known graves. A small group from Hoole History and Heritage Society visited the Ypres and Somme battlefields of the Great War, led by one of the Society’s members, Ged Ellis of Entente Cordiale Battlefield Tours. A full day exploring the Somme battlefields was given a very moving focus by Jean, who had longed for years to visit the memorials to her two uncles from Hoole. Lance Corporal William Hargrave Edwards of the 1/16 London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) was killed on the first day of the Somme, July 1st 1916. He is remembered among the more than 72,000 soldiers recorded on the Thiepval Memorial. Private Robert Edward Edwards, his brother, of the 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment, was killed on the 27th October 1918 (only two weeks before the Armistice) and is remembered on the memorial wall at the cemetery in Vis-en-Artois south east of Arras. A highlight of the visit was the Lochnagar Crater, scene of the explosion of a huge mine at 7.28 am to signal the opening of the Battle(s) of The Somme on July 1st 1916. Nearly 27 tons of explosives left a huge crater 98 ft (30 m) deep and 330 ft (100 m) wide. (The sound of the blast was considered the loudest man-made noise in history up to that point, with reports suggesting it was heard in London.) The site was later purchased by Richard Dunning who also founded The Friends of Lochnagar. “The largest crater ever made by man in anger is now a unique memorial to all those who suffered in the Great War. It is dedicated to peace, fellowship and reconciliation between all nations who fought on the Western Front.” One of the key features of the Lochnagar Crater is the range of the memorial plaques set into the boardwalk around its top. Just recently, through Ged Ellis’s membership of the Friends of Lochnagar Crater, Jean was able to commemorate her two uncles in this iconic World War 1 site.

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. A-Z OF CHRISTMAS BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
A is for Angels There are angels everywhere in the Christmas Story; angels had a critical role to play in the birth of the Christ-child. B is for Bethlehem History’s greatest figure was born, not in a palace. mansion or a hospital, but in a stable! C is for Carols “Away in a Manger” is the best known and best loved Christmas Carol, according to a recent poll. With more than 7 out of 10 adults attending a Carol service every year. D is for Decorations In a Nativity play recently, all the lights were to be turned off, leaving only one light in the manger. At the appropriate moment all light went out, even the manger light. The silence was broken when one of the little shepherds whispered loudly “Hey, you turned off Jesus!” E is for Emmanuel The birth of Jesus shows us once and for all that God is not above us or against us but rather among us. F is for Families Christmas was going to be different this year. Dad spoke to the family about use of time, excessive spending on gifts and the need for les arguments. He ended with, “Lets make this best Christmas ever!” His little son replied “But dad I don’t see how we can improve on the first Christmas! G is for Gifts Christmas is about giving and receiving of gifts. On average most UK families will spend between £530 and £682 on gifts, decorations, food and drink. H is for Herod Herod was the first man who hated Christmas. He was the original Grinch. Herod represents all attempts to destroy Christmas as a festival and to erdaicate all talk of Jesus. I is for Innkeeper In the Nativity play Mary and Joseph knocked on the door, the innkeeper came to the door. “Can we have a room for the night asked Joseph. The Innkeeper replied, come in, you can have the best room in the hotel. There was a pause. But Joseph was a quick thinker, he looked over the innkeepers shoulder, turned to Mary and said, “We not staying a dump like that, Come on Mary we’ll sleep in the stable!” J is for Joseph Joseph is definitely the forgotten hero of the nativity story. Joseph stood faithfully by Mary and was a father to Jesus as the boy grew up. In our time, when ‘absent fathers’ has become epidemic Joseph’s example is a powerful one. K is for Kings The top three things overheard on the Wise Men’s Journey to Bethlehem 3. You guys ever eat camel meat I hear it tastes like chicken 2. Man, I’m starting to get a rush from this frankincense! 1. All this staring at a star while riding a camel is making me woozy – I’m going to be sick!! L is for Love It is the season in which we are reminded of the importance of loving others, of giving rather than receiving. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son. M is for Mary At a Nativity Play all was going well until the angel appeared and told the girl playing Mary she was going to be have a baby. But how can this be said Mary since I am a Viking! N is for Nativity Christian art has made the nativity scene gloriously hygienic. But the truth is, the stable or cave where Jesus was born would have been smelly, dirty and untidy. O is for Origins Have you ever thought why have a Christmas tree? Who pulled the first Cracker? Who sent the first Christmas card? Why do we call it Boxing Day? Was Jesus really born on December 25th?

P is for Peace Who can forget in the First World War, when British and German soldiers laid down their weapons came into No Man’s land and played a game of football on Christmas Day? The first Christmas Day was greeted with the angels declaring “peace on earth” Andy Glover has lived in Hoole Q is for Queues It was the week before with his wife Sue for 29 years. Christmas; in one long Andy began at Hoole Baptist queue to a check out till, one man was heard to Church, on Westminster say, “they should kill Road, as Youth Pastor, before the guy who started Christmas. A lady, further becoming the Pastor and back in the line replied, “They now Team Leader. did – they hung him on a cross!” R is for Revelling The birth of a child is an occasion for great rejoicing – Jesus’ birth was no different. Today, however, the rejoicing, is less associated with this birth, it is motivated by the joy of having days off work and the excess of food and drink. S is for Santa A little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual questions, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child started at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute then gasped, “Didn’t you get my email?” T is for Thanksgiving Christmas is a time when we should excel in the gratitude attitude. Thanksgiving is therefore as much a part of Christmas as anything else. U is for Unselfishness This Christmas, why not live simply, so that others may simply live. It’s Christmas every time you let God love others through you, every time you smile at your neighbour and offer him your hand. V is for Visiting Christmas is a time when we visit family and friends and when we ourselves receive visitors. The startling truth about Christmas is that God in Christ chose to make an extraordinarily journey from heaven to earth to visit us. W is for Wonder Was there a moment, known only to God, when all the stars held their breath, when the galaxies paused in their dance for a fraction of a second, and the Word, who had called it all into being, went with all His love into the womb of a young girl? X is for Xmas You could say we have taken the Christ out of Christmas, if you do this all you are left with is M & S!! Y is Yule This was a mid winter festival which included the burning of a Yule log. It is associated with the longest day and looks forward to the coming of spring. Z is for Zonked Out The festivities of Christmas end with the sigh of contentment and the sound of snoring as granddad falls asleep after his Christmas lunch. May I take this opportunity in saying I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and close with this Celtic Christmas blessing: The light of the Christmas star to you. The warmth of home and hearth to you. The cheer and good will of friends to you. The hope of a childlike heart to you. The joy of a thousand angels to you. The love of the Son and God’s peace to you. Amen

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
CHRISTMAS CHEER Winter is when you notice evergreen shrubs with a good shape or rich foliage, that at other times of the year blend into the background. These shrubs can form the centrepiece of a winter corner of any garden. There is no point in having winter interest hidden away, put the plants where they can be seen from the house or by a path used daily. For Christmas cheer a few shrubs will provide red, yellow and green colour in your garden. A slow growing columnar golden Yew – Taxus baccata Standishii will form a slim column of green and golden yellow foliage. Next to it plant a rounded Skimmia shrub with white or red flowers and then maybe a couple of Pittosporum Tom Thumb shrubs. They have a dumpy rounded shape with new growth being lime green that then fades to chocolate brown. At the back plant a red stemmed Cornus alba Sibirica and cut the stems back to 30cms each year in February to encourage a forest of new red stems for the next season. Or look for some of the variegated Hollies such as Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginatai which can be kept trimmed to shape. If you have a male and female, you should have red berries too. Smaller plants that will give you colour at year end before the bulbs pop up include any of the Euphorbias. These have evergreen foliage ranging from silvery grey, to plum red and green edged with red. Some such as Euphorbia characias subsp. Wulfenii can grow to 1m in height and width. Then there are smaller Euphorbias such as Silver Swan which will form a neat plant with white edged green foliage and bottlebrush flowers in spring. The ever reliable Heucheras do well in winter where they have some shelter and well drained soil. They will keep their leaves well into winter if it is mild. I have clients who have overwintered the orangey, fudge coloured leaved varieties and in my own garden the purple leaved varieties do well. Make sure that any tender plants are brought into a greenhouse or well lit garage to overwinter. Or cover plants with a fleece if they are borderline tender. Bubble wrap around any pots with plants that you don’t want to freeze. If the roots freeze then the plants will die. Janet Heath Garden Mentor

Hayley’s health and fitness
Are you making your child fat? DID you know that 1 in 3 children aged between 6-9 years are obese? Did you know that food/ eating habits in young children are what can contribute to them being overweight as an adult. There are several factors in today’s society that contribute to a childhood obesity, simply things such as; Larger portioned foods, snacks between meals, sugary drinks, lack of activity, skipping breakfast, bad habits observed by parents the list goes on. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BREAK THIS CYCLE? You may think what’s a few treats they are children that’s what kids do, eat sweets, ice cream etc. However you could be contributing to their risks of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, reduced mobility, low self-esteem and depression plus many more negative consequences. The fact is when a child is young they only know what they are taught and see on a daily basis, if they think having full fat coke for breakfast and take-aways of an evening is the norm, they are more likely to continue this when they get older. If you’re guilty of this it’s not too late to change habits and you being a good role model is the first place to start. If your child is a fussy eater, try a variety of foods and offer lots of praise and encouragement for trying something they wouldn’t usually have. Sit down with them at meal times and show them that you eat the new foods too and tell them how good for you they are. Children need to try foods on more than one occasion, they might not like it the first time but keep trying, try adding different sauces, or mix it in with something they do like. Be sure to make a big fuss if they do finish or even try a new food.
like simple tasks but they can make a huge difference. A child should be physically active 60 mins of the day! It’s important also not to use food as a reward, “oh well done honey you did your homework, here’s a cream cake!” use sticker charts, praise and days out to reinforce good behaviour. You often hear lots of mums saying “Give him this it will keep her quiet!” yes you might get two minutes peace while they finish off a bag of sweets. But you will have more grief when your child needs teeth removing due to tooth decay! Keep snacks to savoury treats, cheese, crackers, veggie sticks for example. Keep in mind of the effects in later life, cut of sugary snacks, encourage good eating habits and show them good life skills by being a good role model. It’s never too late to make changes!
It’s important they stay active, how many Written for Talkabout Publishing children do you see as soon as they get home by Hayley Ryder from school are straight on the computer/ Personal Trainer and Class instructor social media. Hoole History Corner
We continue along Hoole Road with Folly House, as told by Ralph Earlam, from the H Folly House dominated the north side of Hoole Road in Flookersbrook for 250 years. In the Hoole Urban District Council Handbook produced in 1947 it is suggested that the house was originally built as a windmill. Its footprint on early Ordnance Survey Maps shows that it had an octagonal shape which of course would have been appropriate to house the sail of a windmill.
1781-2. A memorial stone containing his name can be seen on Bridgegate, marking the demolition of the old gate and the building of the existing one. The name Brookhouse had been given to the property and after Ellames’ death in 1860 the auction sale particulars showed that the fields attached to it were known as Mill Field signifying that there was once a mill on that site.
The house was often referred to as Anderson’s Folly, as if the windmill had failed in some way. It is known that lands in Flookersbrook belonged to John Anderson from as early as 1654. In a 1670 document, John Anderson is listed as an ‘Innholder’ in Newton by Chester. The Inn would almost certainly have been ‘The Ermine’.
Patterson Ellames resided at Brookhouse until 1824 when he purchased Allerton Hall, south of Liverpool for £28,000 and lived there until his death in 1860. Between 1824 and 1860 Brookhouse was leased and sub-leased. The tenants included Charles Brittain, a chemist who became bankrupt. His son William became the chief accountant and administrator of John Laird’s Shipbuilders in Birkenhead. Another tenant was Peter Keay, a coal agent who became involved in a cock fighting court case.
John Ogilby’s road map of 1675 shows that there was a Mill at that site very near to Cosbrook (Flookersbrook) Hall (below, left) and the 1875 Ordnance Survey map (main picture) The lands were eventually acquired by Patterson Ellames, a druggist who was Mayor of Chester from
In 1860 the property was bought by Charles Brown, of Browns of Chester fame, who was at that time living with his mother in a cottage in the grounds. Charles

HOOLE ROAD NORTH SIDE Folly House – Originally a Windmill
he Hoole History and Heritage Society Brown resurrected the name Folly House and set about improving the property creating large ornamental gardens. With the purchase of the property he also laid claim to the Manor of Flookersbrook and the first page of the Flookersbrook Improvement Act ensured that his claim was prominently registered. Charles Brown was Mayor of Chester six times and did many good works in Hoole and Newton, being associated with the building of All Saints Church, where there are memorials to him and his parents.
Folly House was then occupied by Cecil Plumbe Smith who had previously lived at Newton Hall. He was a partner in Walker Smith & Way, Solicitors, and had owned the land on which Hoole Alexandra Park was built. His wife Mary was Commandant of the Cheshire 46 Red Cross Detachment and was also Matron of Hoole Bank House Auxiliary Hospital.
Voluntary Aid Detachment Card of Mary Smith They continued to live there until the mid-1930s when plans in the County Record Office show Folly House was to be demolished and the houses which are there now built on the site. The Folly is still remembered today through the names of Folly Cottage and the more recently built Folly House, but the knowledge that there was once a windmill in Flookersbrook has been lost in time. Acknowledgement - Cheshire Record Office for details of Auction Sale 1860 The only known picture of Folly House is from an aerial photograph taken in 1931 in which the building stands out in the shape of the tower, or stump of a windmill. When Charles Brown died in 1900 he left to his niece, Lucy Elizabeth Brown “the use and enjoyment of The Folly, or any other of his houses at Newton and Hoole”. In 1905, she married the curate of St. John’s Church, Rev. Charles Griffin who became the vicar of Dunham Hill. They continued to live at Folly House until just before the outbreak of the First World War.

Anti-social behaviour in Newton POLICE have carried out extra patrols in Limewood Field and New Scene Youth Centre following reports that young people have been using drugs and causing damage to property. Patrols have been stepped up and attempts made to ‘engage and educate’ local residents and young people who use the play area.
