Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hoole treasure trail was some fin special! The Hoole trail has returned with a vengeance. The Hoolifin treasure trail, organised by Hole Church of England Primary School PTA, in conjunction with local Hoole business and the Hoole Christmas lights committee, saw sharks decorated by the primary school children placed in the Hoole businesses. Following on from previous years’ success in the community with the trail, the children were provided with a Hoolifin trail map and encouraged, with the help of their parents, to visit as many of the businesses in Hoole as possible and note which shark was in which business. The completed trail maps were then entered into a draw and the lucky winner, Emily Rimmer, helped to turn on the Christmas lights on Saturday 19th November. Headteacher Cheryl Bullen said: “I am delighted yet again we have continued to strengthen our school links with the local community through the fun trail over half term.

Hoole History Corner
Monty Mercer of Hoole History and Heritage Society, describes the historical signific NEWTON HOLLOWS is a unique urban hollow-way (sunken lane) to the north east of Chester in Hoole (and the source of Hoole’s name?). It was created over hundreds of years by the constant passage of people, carts and animals. It stretches, in its walkable section, from Newton Lane to the Fairfield Road footbridge over the Millennium Greenway. This section is 506 metres long and rises from 19m above sea level to 27m, heading out of Chester. The lane has since been converted to a recreational path, although the steep banks associated with the hollow-way remain. Where it meets Mannings Lane, the northern end of the lane was curtailed by the introduction of the railway in the late19th century (1874), suggesting that, by that time, the lane had ceased to have any utility as a throughroute. That isolated and unmanaged section used to be linked to the open section by a short tunnel, a handsome structure, under
the walkway approach to the Fairfield Road bridge.. The tunnel was stoppedup in the 1980s because the brickwork had become unsafe. The name first appears on the Tithe Award of 1842 as a “Newton Hollow”. Its current status is that of a Public Footpath, and Historic Monument. It was subject to a programme of regeneration in 2007, stressing its associations with the Roman occupation of the area from approximately 79CE to 385CE, and, before 2007, had been robust enough to withstand the spread of residential development in Hoole during the Edwardian period and the 1930s. Today, the Hollows is known to generations of Hoole residents, young and old, as a place to play, to walk the dog, and to be a little wary of, given its medieval reputation as the lair of the “Hound from Hell”. THE ROMAN ROAD
The Hollows originated as part of the Roman road between the legionary fortress of Chester and the important Roman manufacturing centre at Wilderspool (Warrington). The route was not one of the Imperial Military Roads, which were paved, two carts wide, and used for the distribution of mail and the movement of 1905 Postcard Showing The Tunnel troops.
Rather, it was a civil route for the movement of people and goods, and had to be only one cart wide. It may well have originally been a trackway used by members of local British tribes, following the natural lie of the land between rivers, and avoiding the marshy ground on the flat land to the west of Helsby and Frodsham Hills and the sea. Connection between places The geographically strategic importance of the points on the River Dee and the River Mersey, occupied respectively today by Chester and Wilderspool, far pre-dates the development of the two settlements during the Roman occupation. By a strange coincidence, each of the rivers has one point on it which is both the highest navigable place for a seagoing vessel, and the lowest convenient crossing for people and animals. These two points

are where the two settlements later developed. Any route between them was of equally great significance. This is the route on which Newton Hollows lies. WILDERSPOOL Little was known of the Roman industrial settlement of Wilderspool (Veratinum), until in 1786, Thomas Greenall, a successful St Helens brewer, decided to build a new brewery in Wilderspoool to take advantage of fresh spring water. Digging of foundations revealed signs of Roman workshops, furnaces and kilns, and a leadlined coffin. Subsequent 19th century excavations revealed an earthenware actor’s mask, unique in Europe, a woodworker’s plane, and many funerary urns, all on splendid display in Warrington Museum.
It was concluded that Wilderspool had been a major manufacturing supply centre for the Roman garrisons of northern Britain. Equipment for horses, soldiers’ clothing, everyday pottery, glassware, had all been produced at Wilderspool, and transported to the fort at Chester, which was used as a military depot. The route in detail The Roman route from Chester to Wilderspool is today obscured in part by the line of the A56, the modern descendant of the two Turnpike Road Trusts set up in 1786 from Flookersbrook to Frodsham, and from Frodsham to the Saracen’s Head on the southern side of Wilderspool. However, the original route can be discerned by a study of old maps and by walking of sections of it. In outline, the following is the suggested route as a list of roads and places that a reader may wish to explore, either on foot, or from his or her armchair: • From Chester city centre: Frodsham Street, Brook Street, Chester Station Car Park Flookersbrook, Kilmorey Park Avenue, Kilmorey Park, Newton Hollows, Mannings Lane South,
• The Street (from the Latin via strata meaning paved road) in Hoole Bank, High Street (Dunham-on the-Hill), Robin Hoods Lane, (Helsby), Iron Dish Caravan site (opposite Helsby High School), Howey Lane (Frodsham), • Sutton Weaver, Preston-onthe- Hill, Daresbury Village, Higher Walton, Lower Walton, Wilderspool (site of Morrison’s Supermarket, and the former Greenall’s Brewery)

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
Opportunist thieves steal bikes PEOPLE are being urged to take good care of their bicycles following a couple of sneak thefts in Hoole recently. PCSO Keith Bartlett says that bike riders should lock their bikes up even if they are just making a brief stop at a shop. One man went into a store in Hoole and returned less than a minute later to find his bike had been pinched. PCSO Bartlett says: “People are leaving them unlocked and it only takes seconds for an opportunist thief to ride the bike off. “It doesn’t look suspicious if someone rides off on a bike but if they are seen trying to hacksaw their way through a lock it would be different.” He is advising people to lock their bikes up, no matter where they are left. Investing in a good bike lock can save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds. With Christmas coming up he says that people should consider keeping new bikes in the house, unless they have a very secure shed. “I would consider investing in an outdoor light which is triggered by movement,” he adds. “Thieves don’t like being lit up!”

Home, sweet home Ready for a bit of DIY over the festive season? Then why not try this recipe for a traditional gingerbread house. Ingredients l 200g butter l 200g caster sugar l 350g black treacle l 625g plain flour l 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda l 1 teaspoon salt l 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg l 1 tablespoon ground ginger l 300g icing sugar l 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar l 2 egg whites l 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Method Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 15 mins Additional cooling & decorating time: 2 hrs 1. Preheat the oven to 190 C / Gas mark 5. 2. Melt butter in a large saucepan. Mix in sugar and treacle. Combine the flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda, nutmeg and ginger. Gradually stir into the pan, using your hands to work in the last bit until the dough is stiff. 3. On a floured surface, roll out dough evenly to 0.5cm (1/4”) thickness and cut out house shapes as desired. Place all house pieces onto greased baking trays. 4. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes. Cool for several minutes on the baking tray, then move to racks to finish cooling. 5. When the gingerbread has cooled completely, make the icing to glue the pieces of your house together. In a medium bowl, mix together icing sugar and cream of tartar. Add egg whites and vanilla. Beat on high speed until icing holds its shape. If necessary, add more icing sugar to thicken. Cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying while you work. 6. Construct your house using the icing to stick the pieces together and allow to dry. 7. Finally, decorate your new home in your own personal style – though we can guarantee that lots of chocolate buttons, smarties and a sprinkling of sparkly icing sugar look good on any home! Feel free to e-mail or post in pictures of your houses to us at: info@somervillesestateagents.co.uk or Somerville’s Estate Agents, 24a Charles Street, Hoole, Chester CH2 3AZ and we will display them on our Facebook page.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
December delights As Christmas approaches and the year draws to a close it is time to enjoy the evergreens in the garden. I always suggest that you concentrate a collection of plants with winter interest, either somewhere that you can see as you arrive at your home or in a view that you see on a daily basis from a window. Chameacyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a golden foliage conifer with long thread like leaves and a lovely rounded shape. Allow it space in an open situation and trim the shrub annually to keep it small. Plant it near a Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Bleu Nantais which has grey blue foliage and a neat upright habit. Another evergreen that looks colourful in winter is Elaeagnus ebbingei Gilt Edge. It has yellow and green leaves and the bonus of fragrant tiny flowers in autumn. These three shrubs
would form a good background to lower growing plants such as evergreen Euphorbias, large or small. I have included a photo of a simple, yet effective evergreen planting, combining five plants which look good all year and require minimum maintenance. This combination can be used on a smaller scale. The plumes of the pampas grass at the back are probably the smaller variety, Cortaderia selloana Pumila which will get to about 1.5m tall. In front is the chocolate brown foliage of Pittosporum tenuifolium Tom Thumb, a low mounded shrub. Also adding contrast with golden yellow is Euonymus Emerald n Gold. Some lavenders and a mounded green Skimmia complete the design. Do not forget that some plants, if left unpruned have striking
shapes in winter especially frosted. Sedums, Hydrangea flowers, Achillea and Crocosmia seed heads (pictured) all add to the restrained winter palette of colour and shape. Complete the cutting back of dead foliage from perennials and remove wet leaves from sitting on top of plants and causing them to rot. Mulch around all plants with 4cms depth of well rotted organic matter to improve the soil for next year. Lightly water any plants in greenhouses but do not let them stand in water for any length of time as they may freeze in low temperatures. Plants in pots outside should not stand in water over winter and those more tender plants that could suffer if the roots are frozen should have the pots wrapped in bubble wrap to protect them.

WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
I
MAGINE we are playing All Star Family Fortunes and I was Vernon Kay and we asked 100 people what they most associate with Christmas, what would be the top 5 answers they would give? There are any number of things that have become part and parcel of Christmas, some things we love others we hate! Andy Glover has lived in
In your opinion, what’s critical to Christmas? What’s the one Hoole with his wife Sue thing that if you were to get rid of it Christmas would become for 27 years. Andy began unrecognisable? If you had to ditch one thing from Christmas what at Hoole Baptist Church, would you choose? Turkey, mulled wine, crackers, the Queen’s on Westminster Road, Speech, Ant & Dec, Wham’s Last Christmas, the work’s Christmas as Youth Pastor, before party, Carols, Christmas Shopping, Sports Personality of the Year, becoming the Pastor and Carols from Kings, Decorations, the EastEnders Christmas Special. now Team Leader. Of course there are some things that you can ditch and it’s still recognisable as Christmas. Personally, I’m very happy to do without the brussel sprouts, sherry and the Wizard of Oz that were a permanent feature of my childhood. But I want to suggest that there’s one thing that if you get rid of it then all you’re left with is a bog standard Christmas. It’s adequate; but it’s not deluxe. The trouble is that for many of us is that’s what we’ve settled for. I know it’s what every church leader says at this time of year but bear with me, not only do I get paid to say this, I actually believe it! It’s been said that if you take Christ out of Christmas then all you’re left with is a mess - xmas. I think that’s overstating it, but I like what he’s done there! Can I suggest that if you get rid of Jesus Christ then you’ve ripped the heart out of Christmas? He’s what Christmas is all about. They even named it after him! He’s the reason for the season. But we’ve lost sight of that amongst the tinsel, presents and stress. The Gospel of Luke tells us that the first visitors at the stable maternity ward were the Shep-herds. They went to Bethlehem because they knew that Jesus’ birth was good news of great joy for all people. And so if you take the Christ out of Christmas then what you’re left with is bad news of real misery for everyone. It’s hard to get in the festive spirit with that sort of strap line, isn’t it?! I’m not an idiot; I know that many of us are happy to settle for a Christ-less Christmas. We’re content with the bog standard version. That’s your decision! But why would you go for a Christmas that’s satisfactory, sufficient, passable or tolerable when you can have one that rocks! Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.” During this Christmas season, may you be blessed with the spirit of the season, which is peace, the gladness of the season, which is hope, and the heart of the season, which is love. Finally, maybe you would like to join us for an evening for all the family on this festive occasion with atmospheric singing of carols, old and new, traditional and modern, sung in the open air with readings to celebrate Christmas. “Hoole Community Carols” will take place at 6pm on Sunday 18th December in the Car Park of Hoole Community Centre; Mulled Wine, coffee and mince pies will be available to pur-chase from Hobson’s café afterwards. This is a great opportunity to step aside from all the hustle and bustle of all the preparations for Christmas and take some time to reflect on the heart of Christmas which is the birth of Jesus Christ.

Mystery of the Flookersbrook horseman There is a very interesting photo in the ‘History’ section of your last issue. It concerns the picture of Thomas Walker on horseback, writes Mike Hoddinott. in Flookersbrook. There seems to be some slight evidence that this gentleman is related to the Walker family who started up the Walkers, Parker Leadworks in the ‘fields’ of Boughton in 1800? Some years ago I wrote up a history of these Works, my employer, and there is a Thomas Walker in the family but little is known about him. He was the brother of Edward Walker who took over the management of the Works about 1820 but Thomas was not, it seems, involved in the Works at all except that his son Edward Claudius Walker took over its management about 1850. Other than that there is little more mention of him but seeing the picture of him on horseback in Flookersbrook is significant. It is well established that t Edward was known to be an enthusiastic horse rider and what is even more interesting, regularly rode from his garden gate, now where the Queen Hotel is, across the fields to the Flookersbrook area. There is a quite good painting in the family of him standing in Flookersbrook on horseback with the Leadworks and its shot tower in the background. Was he going to visit his brother? Interesting?

Loyalty scheme launched A new loyalty scheme has been launched in Hoole. The Love Hoole Loyalty Card went in early November and several businesses have already signed up to the scheme, including cafés, restaurants, and bars, in addition to shops and other local service providers such as hairdressers. The Loyalty Card can be collected from any participating business and registered on the in-store tablet or on the Love Hoole website. It can then be used at any venue in the trading group. Once signed up, card users can easily check their point balances on line or in store. Customers can even donate their points to their favourite local charity or not-for-profit organisation. Love Hoole spokesman Kingdom Thenga, founder of The Suburbs and At The Hollows, said: “We’re looking forward to the launch of the loyalty card scheme and are keen to hear from more local businesses who would like to get involved. “Hoole is a really special community and people travel for miles to shop here. Our vision is that anyone shopping in Hoole, whether that is in a coffee shop or fashion boutique, will feel that they are rewarded and being encouraged to come back. “We want our loyalty card to bring the Hoole community closer together. Too many town centres become stagnant and we welcome this opportunity to revitalise Hoole town centre, thank our loyal customers and provide an incentive for new people to visit the area.”
