Bringing Art to the Street S
potted: A Klimt in Curzon park, a Renoir in Upton and a Constable in Hoole! Somerville’s estate Agents are bringing well known works of art to the street with their arty ‘For Sale’ boards. The unique boards feature paintings from well-known artists and sellers are able to choose the masterpiece they want displayed outside their home. Richard Wheeler, one of the directors of Somerville’s said “We’re really pleased with how our ‘For Sale’ boards look. They’re a welcome and eye catching change from the normal run-of-the-mill boards that are out there.” He added “We like to stand out from the crowd and we want our properties to stand out too. We’ve had a lot of compliments about our art boards. People love them!” Mr Pugh from Handbridge said “We chose Van Gogh’s Irises for our board. It’s one of my favourite paintings. It’s such a clever idea to put these works of art on the ‘For Sale’ boards. It certainly makes a change from some of the ugly boards you see and brings some added interest to the street!”

Hoole History Corner
Hoole’s war memorials THERE are five war memorials in Hoole dedicated to the memory of the men of the area who lost their lives in the two world wars. Three of the memorials are rolls of honour, two are in All Saints Church, the third was in the Elms Town Hall. When the Elms was demolished, it was removed and re-hung in Hoole Community Centre above the fireplace in the main hall. The fourth memorial is heard but never seen. It is the tolling bell in the tower of All Saints Church. It was added to the existing five bells in 1925 and is inscribed with the names of the dead of the First World War so that the names ring out forever. The fifth memorial is probably the most widely known. It is the cross on Hoole Road opposite the Elms site. The cross, its matching base and memorial wall were built of red sandstone from St Bees, Cumberland. It was designed by Mr R Boot and was unveiled at a ceremony on 11th September 1949 by Maj Gen GM Elliot (below).

Will council approve new supermarket on Hoole Road? PLANS to turn the Elms GP practice into a Tesco store are set to move a step closer in February. Borough planners are being asked to approve a change of use for the site on Hoole Road at the meeting on 3rd February. If it receives council approval, the path will be clear for Tesco to open one of its smaller stores at the premises which are soon to be vacated when the GP practice moves to the new health centre on Delamere Street. There has been a big campaign against Tesco, with traders fearing that it will mop up business and take customers away from Faulkner Street and Charles Street. We will let you know what happens in next month’s magazine but if you can’t wait we’ll be updating the website and social media in the meantime.

No postcards from I
had a trip in late November. Not the kind that resulted in 500+ photos uploaded to facebook of winter sun, a suitcase full of sandy underwear and Toblerone from duty free. This trip resulted in a modest upload of just four photos of bruises and fractures, torn jeans full of the mulsh that gathers in the kerb on Lightfoot Street and a bottle of Lucozade - because being bed ridden always meant Lucozade when I was a kid. I hated the stuff but I am pretty sure my Mum knew that and it was a test of will. If he drinks the Lucozade he’s not faking it. I was instructed to not move for a few days to allow the bones to heal. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to download Netflix and strap myself into bed
While I was laid up, the world went about its usual routine. Things don’t actually stop when you step away. I wasn’t expecting everything to start spluttering and to grind to a halt but I was hoping the patterns I’d fallen into would be missing me. One less car in the synchronised commute. One less shopper requiring assistance at the self service till. One less target risking life and limb crossing on the corner of Charles Street.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
After I’d exhausted pretty much all that Netflix had to offer, the fracture clinic gave me the go ahead to return to work but without the use of the car. Driving was well and truly off the list of gradual reintroduction and so I became a bus stop dweller. 26 Tel 01244350398
Public transport had always put the fear of God in me. I don’t think there has ever been a time when I’ve sat on the Merseyrail to Lime Street without wondering how many ‘Scallies’ had crop dusted the seat before I’d pitched up and parked my derriere there. The thought of getting up earlier than usual, wandering to the bust stop with my arm anchored to my chest and then being jostled en route to Wrexham should have been enough to put me off my porridge but I was surprised at (1) how adaptable I was to change and (2) how clean, punctual and empty (at that time of the morning) the Sapphire Arriva buses really are! In fact, the whole experience has been, well, an experience.
Maybe it is a side effect of the festive spirit but I’m enjoying pulling on an old winter coat and going through the pockets to find out who I was eight months ago. It’s nearing the minus degrees and I’m giving the car a gentle pat as I wander past it at stupid o’clock in the morning and head towards the station.
RHYTHM
The winter period has been kind so far and the rain has waited for me to get to work rather than saturating me as I run for the bus and leaving me sat in puddle like a spent tea bag. I’ve had to wrap up against the frost but to be fair, the new flat cap and Christmas woollens have aided my catwalk waddle over Hoole Bridge. The frost, glinting underfoot in the streetlights, and the beats pulsing through my ipod catapult me back to my youth; the music calling me to the dance floor like a siren luring me back to the sea. The sparkle now becomes the diamanté littered floor

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
m this trip!
of the Astoria on Tottenham Court Road but rather than a rhythmic strut of purpose, the sudden arctic danger and the painful reminder of my resent fall ensure that the walk is less “into the groove.” and more “I’ve soiled myself!” I spent the majority of my youth terrified that the ‘rhythm was gonna get me’ but now that I’m standing here willing it to just take me, it’s too late. None of my fellow bus dwellers have even heard of Gloria or the Miami Sound Machine and those that give a vague ‘yeah, I think I saw them a few months ago at V’ seem to envisage a cutting edge dance act but that could be because I’ve nestled Doctor Beat between Diplo and Disclosure! (see, I am still down with the kids).
PATIENCE
And so, as I come to close my January waffle and respectfully tip my (flat) cap to the memory of 2014 (2014 - 2014), I whisper Gloria’s lyrics into the early morning breeze ‘take me, only for what I am’ - which right now is probably a far cry from what I want to be. Not only have a fallen over on a flat surface and broken bones, I went to bed last night with a hot water bottle. It’s like I casually skipped the mid-life crisis bit and cut straight to OAP! So, expect to find me decked out in beige and lined up for joint complex in the apothecary or in front of you in the queue at the post office somewhat bewildered at the price of stamps and insisting on going through every pocket while I find the correct change. People of (Notting) Hoole, please be patient with me. Happy New Year to you all. Oh, and does anybody know if Nonna Rosa’s offers a senior citizen discount?
Look up....
and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. crime update with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
SHED BREAKS ARE A CONCERN HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to beef up their shed security following a series of break-ins in recent weeks. Across Chester thieves have been targeting sheds because there are often flimsy locks and comparatively high value goods inside, such as bikes and tools. Police are advising people to put extra strong locks on their garden sheds and to be mindful that sheds are an easy target at the bottom of a dark garden. Cyclists are are also advised to keep their expensive road bikes in the house, rather than the shed, particularly if they are going away. Only keep an expensive bike in the shed if it is securely attached to the floor. You can meet PCSO Keith Bartlett at his next street surgery on Saturday 28th February, from 11am-12noon, outside the Bromfield Arms, Faulkner Street, and let him know of any crime concerns you may have and issues you feel need tackling.

Gardening by Janet Heath
The promise of spring Late winter can often bring a blast of cold weather but it does not stop plants from starting to grow and flower. Bulbs start the year with crocuses and snowdrops out first. Crocuses do best in sun as the flowers will open wide in the sun, then close as the sun leaves them. Crocus tommasinianus has pale mauve flowers with golden stamens in the middle and the birds do not damage the blooms. Birds seem to like the larger flowers especially yellow ones, so I now avoid growing these! A shady site with well drained soil under deciduous trees suits the snowdrops better. They will gradually carpet the ground under trees and shrubs. I would
also add Iris reticulata to my early flowering bulbs. These small but exotic blue, white or creamy coloured flowers will enjoy a sunny or lightly shaded spot in any well drained soil. Plant all these bulbs in groups close together for best effect. An early flowering climber is Clematis cirrhosa Wisley Cream. This is an evergreen climber that will do well in a sheltered sunny position and give you white, slightly scented flowers in late winter. Ensure the roots are kept cool with the growth in the sun. Prune to shape after flowering but this variety only needs pruning if it becomes too large and to remove dead stems. Witch hazel or Hamamelis is another early flowering shrub although be warned, the flowers are small so don’t expect a
showy plant. However they do look good in light woodland with tiny spidery yellow, red or orange flowers, often slightly scented. In autumn the leaves turn red or yellow. Underplant with snowdrops and crocuses and plant next to a Cornus alba sibirica with red stems for a colourful display in February. Mulch those perennials whose buds are just below the surface of the soil with a layer of well rotted manure. Paeonies have big fat buds at soil level, rodgersias and heleniums sit just below the surface and all would have new shoots protected from freezing by a cosy layer of mulch. Also mulch fruit trees and shrubs with a layer of manure and complete pruning of apples and pears before buds start to grow.

A MONTH OF ROMANCE BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
I
n the third century, the Roman Empire was becoming difficult to defend and the Emperor, Claudius II, needed more soldiers. He tried to recruit new men, but faced an obstacle in the young wives of his soldiers, who begged their husbands to stay at home rather than fight. So Claudius decided to forbid marriage. Gloom descended on the city but there was a priest who disagreed with the Emperor’s decree and married young Andy Glover has lived in lovers in secret. Morale in Rome was restored but Claudius realised that Hoole with his wife Sue his plan wasn’t working. It didn’t take him long to find out why and on for 26 years. Andy began 14th February AD 270 the priest was executed. His name was Saint at Hoole Baptist Church, Valentine - ‘the friend of lovers’. on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before We have lost the reference to the saint and 14th February is now known becoming the Pastor and world-wide as Valentine’s Day. Celebrating it is becoming unavoidable now Team Leader. and ‘compulsory’, which can be very hurtful for those who are single and offends those who wish to defend singleness as an acceptable lifestyle. Valentine’s Day is also becoming increasingly sexualised, losing the innocence it once had. A further concern is that much of the commercial and media attention is shallow. Beneath the surface is an expectation that, at best, romance will turn into humdrum marriage and at worst, it will all end in tears. So what should we do? It’s tempting to treat the occasion as corrupted and ignore it entirely. Although this is the easiest solution I think it is wrong because of the biblical emphasis on redemption. If we dig beneath the chocolates, the flowers and the cards, Valentine’s Day is ultimately about romance, which is a precious gift from God, the high value of which is seen throughout the Bible. In Genesis God created human beings as men and women, complementary companions, and throughout the Bible we see that relationships are good. A whole book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, is all about romance. God uses the language of romance to describe his attitude towards his people and Jesus is depicted as the Church’s bridegroom. God’s affection for us is so strong that only the language of romance is adequate to describe it. God gave us romance because he is love. And that’s a good enough reason to try to redeem Valentine’s Day and romance. We should rejoice in romance, affirming the goodness and ultimate value of love between man and woman. Romance is also a serious thing. For a couple to enter into a romance is to start that cautious walk together that may lead to the lifelong spiritual, psychological and physical union of marriage. We need to encourage restraint in romance. This may seem to fly in the face of affirming romantic love. But we protect the things we value. Because we think romance is good and valuable it needs to be guarded. The Bible is clear that romance should be protected by boundaries; it is too important to be treated lightly and, under the wrong circumstances, is capable of inflicting enormous harm. This year as we celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ remember that love actually is more of a choice than a feeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call ‘love’, and it’s a wonderful feeling, too. People write songs and poems about it; Hollywood film stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of pounds worth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. But recently I read this “There are lots of songs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there aren’t many songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last forever”. Love in a marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it is built upon the foundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have, even when we don’t feel we are in love. Let’s use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to work at “being in love” so that the relationship we are in can last a lifetime.

Ageing is our biggest chAllenge A
geing is the biggest challenge as we progress further into the 21st century. It’s a challenge that contains within it a threat; that if we don’t take action quickly enough, in the right kind of way, then what is unquestionably humanity’s greatest success – doubling life expectancy in the last 200 years – could become a real problem. Last month BBC Breakfast had a week long series on living longer. They covered a wide range of topics but some startling statistics were raised: l There are over 20 million people aged 50 years and over, over a third of the total UK population. l There are now over 14 million people in the UK aged 60 and above. l For the first time in history, there are 11 million people aged 65 or over in the UK. l 3 million people are aged 80 or over. l In 2010, approximately 40,000 people in the UK turned 65; in 2012, it the figure was about 800,000. l There are now more people in the UK aged 60 and above than there are under 18 and more pensioners than children under 16. l The number of centenarians living in the UK has risen by 73% over the last decade to 13,350 in 2012.
There are many elderly and lonely people who are quite able to look after themselves, but whose quality of life could be improved with the help of a companion or housekeeper. With so much talk about the loneliness of older people, it can be a huge relief to know that your loved one is not left on their own, especially if you live a distance away. If you wish to remain as independent as you can a companion housekeeper is an ideal solution. If you would like to discuss the many options available, please contact us to make an appointment.
