SOMERVILLE’S Estate Agents have pledged to make a donation for every house they sell to local charities. In a bid to support their local community, the directors of Somerville’s have chosen five local charities that they will donate to. If they wish to, home sellers can select the charity that the funds will go to support.

charities and when they established Somerville’s Estate Agents they decided to give something back to the local community. “Since our daughter Ellie was born five years ago, we have had a lot of help from local charities such as Stick ‘n’ Step and Claire House. The dedication and commitment of the people in these organisations has been amazing and they have given us hope during our darkest moments. It feels so good to be giving something back!” says Annie. In 2015 Somerville’s donated over £2500 to their chosen charities. To find out more about the charities that Somerville’s Estate Agents support, go to their website somervillesestateagents.co.uk

Co-op to open store at former GP surgery THE former Elms Medical Centre is set to become a Co-op mini market. It had been thought that Tesco would be moving in but now it has emerged that the Co-op has received a planning permission to open a store at the Hoole Road site. The company will close its other Hoole stores on Walker Street and Faulkner Street if it decides to proceed. There had been a big campaign against Tesco, claiming that the store would have taken trade away from the main shopping area. According to local activist Mark Williams, the same sentiment applies to the Co-op. Mr Williams told reporters that the objection was never about Tesco, rather that a supermarket would ‘steal’ trade from Faulkner Street and Charles Street. The Elms site was closed last year when the surgery and three others from Hoole moved to the new Fountains Health Centre. It has been dilapidated ever since, with overgrown vegetation making it a stain on Hoole Road. The Co-op is now trying to push it through the council’s licensing committee, allowing the store to sell alcohol.

Dad and toddler scheme wins national award A scheme which helps dads bond with their children through a local church has been given a national award. Who Let The Dads Out? earned a silver award at the Christian Funders Forum. It was founded at Hoole Baptist Church and has since spread its wings to other churches around the country. It triumphed in the ‘Best Replicable Project’ category at the awards evening held at the Charterhouse, London. The Christian Funders’ Forum is a group of executives of grant making trusts and foundations, with members of the forum granting more than £30 million a year to Christian work. It was a great night, where Mark Chester and Tony Sharp, who run the group, were joined by the advisory group chairman, Rev Andy Glover, from Hoole Baptist Church. Who Let The Dads Out? is a growing movement that resources churches to reach out to dads, father figures and their children. It helps churches do this by inspiring, resourcing and supporting them to begin running activity sessions for fathers and children to attend together. These sessions give dads and their children the opportunity to spend time with each other, mix with other families, have fun and engage with the church. Conventional parent and toddler groups reach relatively few fathers and there is a growing demand for male-orientated parenting groups in the context of family support strategies. Churches are also seeking new ways to reach out to the male population. Other churches target older children and their dads and some run openage sessions. Any of these groups can be called Who Let The Dads Out? groups and become part of the movement. The crucial thing is that Who Let The Dads Out? is all about creating space where dads, father figures and their children can have fun together.

I

N July 1900 Hoole Urban District Council decided to consult its ratepayers in order to create a Public Park and Recreation Ground.

As a result, under the terms of the 1875 Public Health Act, Hoole Urban District Council purchased a plot of land from Thomas Bater and William Williams ‘containing 6 acres, and 37 perches’ to form Hoole Public Park, which was opened by Mr. Robert Yerburgh, local M.P. on May 7th 1904. (Panton Rd was originally called Bater Avenue.) The township of Hoole was developing rapidly: by 1899 three hundred houses a year were being built and the population was increasing. Because a park and recreation ground for the benefit and recreation of the residents and children was seen as an important improvement after 1904 there were plans to extend the very popular park, at the public expense, almost immediately. In 1910 the Council purchased a further three acres of land between the established Public Park and Hoole Road. Before 1908, Canadian Avenue was not a through road; it was laid from Hoole Lane to the corner of the Public Park. There was a suggestion that the through road could be named Park Road, because it would run along the frontage of the land which the Council eventually purchased to extend the park in 1910. Hoole Urban District Council drew up a set of covenants with landowner Cecil Plumbe Smith. They described what the park would contain, including its set of buildings, upon completion. These covenants, still in force today, bound his agreement to the land being used as that park in

perpetuity. Ambitious plans for the park and recreation ground extension, which included a bowling green, formally laid out beds and buildings (the park keeper’s lodge, pavilion and conveniences) and railings were drawn up. By 1911, the bowling green, paths and beds were laid out. On January 9th the first park keeper, Mr. Arthur Ellis from Westminster Road, was appointed. He became responsible for opening and closing and maintaining the park, and for enforcing the Council’s by-laws. However, The Lodge, bowls pavilion and conveniences remained to be completed. The Urban District Council had always intended to ask permission of Her Majesty Queen Alexandra to name Hoole Public Park ‘The Alexandra Park’ so on May 27th1911 the Council wrote to Her Majesty expressing “our deep loyalty and devotion” and asking her “gracious permission” to do so. On June 1st Sir Arthur Davidson replied on Alexandra’s behalf. “Her Majesty has the greatest pleasure in giving permission for the Public Park in Hoole to be named after her, as it is always a pleasure to her to think that her name is associated with anything that adds to the benefit or welfare of the people. Her Majesty trusts that the new public park will prove a source of health and happiness to all the residents and children, for whose benefit and recreation it is intended” On Friday June 23rd, 1911, Mrs. Williams, wife of Hoole Urban District Councillor William Williams, officially opened the renamed ‘Alexandra Park.’

Hoole’s Alexandra Park

l in the crown’ of the old district council. This took place during the Hoole Coronation festivities which commenced on Thursday 22nd June to mark the Coronation of Alexandra’s son, King George V and his wife Queen Mary. Alexandra was styled “Her Majesty Queen Alexandra” following the death of her husband King Edward V11 in 1910 and in 1911 she remained highly popular with the British people as she continued the public side of her life, which started when she became Princess of Wales. She had opened bazaars, attended concerts, and visited hospitals, often on behalf of her mother-in law Queen Victoria. She devoted much time to her many charitable causes. The Lodge, bowls pavilion and conveniences (one ‘Ladies’, one ‘Gentlemen’s,’ both free) were completed in 1913. Then Hoole (Alexandra Park) Bowling Club came into being. Alexandra Park, formed by Hoole Urban District

Council for the benefit and enjoyment of the people and the children of Hoole, is, arguably the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the District Council’s legacy to the residents of Hoole today. Community notice boards and planters go up in Hoole YOU might have noticed some small improvements to Hoole in recent weeks. Hoole councillors Angie Chidley and Alex Black used part of their councillor budgets to help fund community notice boards outside the sub Post Office in Cedar Drive and outside the Faulkner Arms in Charles Street. There are existing noticeboards at Alexandra Park and The Narrows Park. The funds have also been used for three garden planters marked ‘Hoole’ – on Hoole Road at the junctions with Pipers Lane and at Ermine Road. Cllr Chidley said: “We decided to have the new items marked ‘Hoole’ in order to contribute toward promoting Hoole as the fantastic place to live, work, visit and shop that it is.” Cllr Black thanked the management at the sub Post Office and Faulkner Arms for allowing the community notice boards on their premises and the Piper for agreeing to look after the nearby planter. 20mph zones for Hoole and Newton? HOOLE, Newton and Boughton are among the areas earmarked by Cheshire West and Chester Council for a 20mph speed limit. The aim is to reduce road collisions, encourage more children to walk to school and reduce pollution. The widespread introduction will concentrate on roads where mean speeds are currently less than 24 mph and around schools where the mean speed is currently less than 30 mph. As part of the preparation for the roll out, speed limit assessments will be undertaken to

gather information about the priorities for the programme. Councillor Brian Clarke, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure said one of the biggest aims was to encourage more children to walk to school as well as reduce the number of road traffic collisions He said: “There are significant benefits with the introduction of 20 mph speed limits and these will improve community cohesion and individual mental wellbeing with people spending more time in their street rather than trying to get away from the traffic that is actually there. People will feel safer to walk, to jog, to cycle.” Councillor Clarke said: “The Council will take reasonable steps to ensure there is awareness in the local community of the proposals and we will consult with all interested parties – Police, local Councillors, Town and Parish Councils and all parties affected by the speed limit change. ” Cabinet agreed to fund the 20mph schemes with a budget of £200,000 per year for four years. It also agreed to endorse the preparation and development of a report detailing which areas would benefit the most from the revised speed limit, how the schemes would be prioritised and a work programme formulated for consultation.

At one time they would have adorned these front doors with huge crosses and a bloke with a beaky mask would have wondered the streets in the early hours calling for us to bring out our dead. Now you can smell the Olbas oil leaking from the letterboxes a few streets away and the dead are left to wrap themselves up and stagger towards Faulkner Street on a pilgrimage for cold and flu capsules. December is no longer our winter. In much the same way that Karen’s breast can tell her when it’s raining (Mean Girls - 2004), my neck is now showing signs of a newly found skill. The tear inducing pain that’s rendered me helpless appears to be the pre-warning for the sub-zero temperatures threatening to dominate February. I used to work with a woman who claimed she could smell the snow coming. Her sixth sense had her standing in Lightfoot Street with her head tipped up to the sky and as much as those about the office would scoff at her, she was never wrong. Within the week the first few flakes would fall.

Dalmatian in the cul-de-sac. At least three Storm Troopers and an Ewok didn’t survive the attack. Boba Fett had some stories to tell. And now he sits stagnant in box in my parents’ loft space back down in the Essex countryside far far away. His fate most probably laying in the hands of an eBay sale.

As soon as my neck stiffened I knew this was it. The ‘Calling.’ I topped up the antifreeze on Friday but the sun came out and I wore a tee to bed. The following morning I was crippled. I sent the other half to the Co-op to stock up on tinned soups and we fully packed out the freezer with essentials. I spent the entire weekend walking around the house with a hot water bottle tied against my head with a scarf as if I was auditioning for a Star Wars remake. Boba Fett had nothing on me apart from the ability to turn his head from side to side. Even the plastic action figure I had in eighties had better poise and movement, and that was after the great mauling incident of 1984 with the

I leave Hoole every morning at 6.30 on my short commute to work on the outskirts of Chester and already those who work at the bank over the bridge are circulating like vultures in search of a parking space. When I get home I am met with the afterschool 4x4 safari that’s found its way to the rocky terrains of Faulkner Street in need of supplies. I’m more than happy to see them now. I like that Hoole has such appeal. Some seem surprised when I slow down and allow them to cross in front of me rather than taking aim and speeding up. They offer a confused ‘thank you’ wave as they usher their cubs into the warm orange glow of Sainsbury’s.

STAGNATION And that’s got me thinking. I’m stagnating here in my box in Hoole. Even my neck has frozen into a slight right handed “watching the TV from the sofa” angle. Those who talk to me about Hoole’s appeal are those who come to visit. They drop in and complain about the parking. They drink and dine and compliment the area. They spend their money in our neighbourhood and then they return home to theirs. The strangest thing is I feel jealous. This is all a stumble from my own doorstep, skipping next door’s discarded recycling bins that have been blowing back and forth for the past four weeks, and BAM, it’s all there.

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft

I kick off my shoes, shut out the world and take pleasure in the lethargic evenings that have recently become my life. The most activity I entertain is the walk to the fridge or the front door when the food arrives. I’ve grown fatter, balder and my beard now kinks to the left. I’m hyper sensitive to those Ugg wearing foot draggers that slide to and from the high street past my window as if they are still dragging the synthetic sheep from which they claim to made and I’m a million times more prone to finding annoyance in the smallest of things that interrupt my increasingly diminishing world of nothingness. With Amazon Prime, Netflix and the whole world of social media at my fingertips I can (and do) go days without speaking to anybody. But there is strange contradiction that hangs over this existence. I’m fine wallowing in my own personal space without the intervention of any third party but as soon as the opportunity of choice is removed and I am unable to venture from front door I want nothing more than to get out and into all that I’m usually recoiling from.

BOWIE Social media gave me the wake up call. At first it was a colleague’s post about her supper at Nona Rosa. She’d instagramed her spaghetti and meatballs and used a questionable filter that looked like it was served back in the seventies but the post was instantly lost amongst the David Bowie condolences stretched out as far as my finger could scroll. I was gutted. He’d retired from touring after 2004 but I was convinced I’d see him perform just once in my lifetime. I can’t say he was my hero. In fact I have only a handful of his LPs but he inspired those who I do hold up as heroes. He showed them it was okay to

be different; to get out and use their artistry to inspire misfits like me. So what am I doing sat here on my end of a well worn sofa with my arty farty contributions collecting dust in the next room and my novel just a flickering curser on page 130 on a word document buried on my laptop? I was letting life pass me by. I needed to finish my bucket list let alone start marking it off. I need to get out there and mark my territory; claim Hoole as my playground as well as my home address. So I’ve put a gentle line through Bowie’s Black Star promo tour, booked a table a Nonna Rosa’s and I’ve been eyeing up the bearded blokes in GHQ (for beard inspiration purposes only of course). I’ve also taken an active interest in local house prices as renting gives the impression of not staying and those activities that do drag me from my end of the sofa I now intend to find offered here in my playground because if I’m going to claim Notting Hoole as my own, I’m going to have to concur all that it has to offer.

Souper idea for new business ventures! HOOLE Community Centre is the venue for a Dragons Den-style project aimed at giving a boost to young businesses. The SOUP project started in Detroit in 2010 as a means of getting people together to support small business ideas over a bowl of soup. A social enterprise combining crowd funding and collective positivity, four people are invited to present their ideas (no technology is allowed) for four minutes each, the audience can ask only four questions and then over a bowl of soup can vote for their favourite pitch. The winner takes home the pot of donations taken at the door, which is suggested at £5. For some small businesses it is not about the money but the opportunity to network and gain some moral support for what they are trying to achieve. The Chester Soup will take place at Hobsons Cafe in Hoole Community Centre Westminster Road CH2 3AU from 6.30 - 8.30 on the following dates. The inaugural event takes place on Thursday 9th February, with subsequent events planned for 22nd March, 17th May, 12th July, 20th September and 15th November. Please come along bring your friends, have some fun over a bowl of soup. If you have a small business idea that will help the residents of Chester and would like to pitch it in a safe and welcoming venue please email Rachel on Rachelmacd15@yahoo.co.uk pitches are not themed and will be included on a first come first served basis.

VALENTINE’S BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

MAYBE as a teenager you wrote the following in an anonymous Valentines Card to some one you fancied, I know I did! “Roses are red, Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet; And so are you “ Or maybe this variation is more appropriate in 2016 ”Roses are red. Violets are blue. Please don’t kiss me, ‘cuz I have the flu.”

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

St. Valentine Day is the day of the year when you can express your love to the people you appreciate and love. But how did it all start? Is it just a cynical ploy by the card industry to get us to part with more money! Well, the story goes that here once was a priest named Valentine, he lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army and he expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars, so they didn’t sign up. This made Claudius furious. So he had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. One of Valentine’s activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, he kept on performing marriage ceremonies – secretly at night. One night, he was caught, thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to his cell window. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. On the day he was to die, he left a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty; he signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” This started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D. Many people mark valentines on this day - greeting cards, which can be romantic, sentimental or funny. The card can be anonymous. Valentine cards became popular in Great Britain in the nineteenth century. Many historians believe that sending poems on this day originated with the capture of Duke of Orleans, during the Battle of Agincourt. He sent his wife a rhyming love letter, from his prison cell in the Tower of London. February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. This year as we celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ remember that love actually is more of a choice than a feeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call ‘love’, and it’s a wonderful feeling, too. People write songs and poems about it; Hollywood film stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of pounds worth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. But recently I read this “There are lots of songs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there aren’t many songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last forever”. Love in a marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it is built upon the foundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have, even when we don’t feel we are in love. Let’s use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to work at “being in love” so that the relationship we are in can last a lifetime. 34 Tel 01244350398

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. WHERE ARE MY ABS? I SAW THEM IN MY TEENS! A flat stomach or 6 pack are on nearly everyone’s wishlist. The truth is you all have them, they are just hiding!

As you get older your muscle mass decreases as does the collagen in your skin so unless you weight train regularly, people are often left with bingo wings and saggy skin. Having muscle tone burns more calories when you rest, so even when you sat doing nothing you are still burning more calories than someone with very low muscle mass. This is one factor that will help get your six pack to make an appearance. Train all your big muscle groups in order to stay lean. Your diet... the saying “abs are made in the kitchen” is not far wrong! What you eat and how much you eat is vital to getting flat stomach. Over indulging in cakes, crisps and greasy take outs are never going to give your body the nutrition it needs. Cutting down on carbs and opting for smaller healthier meals full of protein is the best way to lose those extra flabby bits. Improve your posture, standing hunched with rounded shoulders and sticky out stomachs, is never a good look, you’ll appear to lose several lbs just from standing taller and holding your stomach ¾ way in. Don’t think endless sit ups and crunches will make your abs appear! If there is a layer of fat sat on your abs they won’t get through! The idea is to blast fat at classes/ gym or personal training sessions and then train your stomach to get the desired effect. However, I always recommend training your core as having a strong core is vital for all other exercises. So mix this up, don’t give it up! 38 Tel 01244350398

Set realistic goals, some people’s weight and body shape is down to genes, so be realistic in what you expect to achieve, measure this off your clothes not the scales! (Muscle weighs more than fat!) A strong core doesn’t come over night, it takes time and effort, good diet and commitment. My abs class is perfect and results have been fab but only those that stick it out lost the inches they deserved. Giving up if you can’t do something isn’t the answer, stick at it and gradually watch your body shape change! That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through the finished surface which means no more puddles. It is also resistant to frost attack, hence giving it all round better traction for tyres and making it better for walking on.
