Police hunt burglary trio Detectives investigating a burglary at a house in Hoole are appealing for information from the public. At 2.30am on Tuesday 2nd January offenders forced open the back door of a house on Hoole Gardens and entered the address but left empty handed. The burglars were seen leaving the property by jumping over a fence and were wearing dark clothing with the hoods up. Det Const Keith Campbell, of Chester CID, said: “I believe these offenders were attempting to target the Hoole, Upton or Kingsway area. “Therefore I am keen for anyone who lives in these areas and may have any CCTV to get in touch. If you have footage from midnight until 4am on 2nd January, which shows three men it could help with our investigation.”

£400,000 improvement scheme for Hoole’s Alexandra Park Plans are being prepared for potential improvement work at Hoole’s popular Alexandra Park. Residents and park users were invited to view and comment on a Masterplan in the pavilion at Alexandra Park. The plan has identified landscape improvements anticipated to cost up to £400,000. The proposals aim to create a vibrant and attractive park offering a wide range of activities sympathetic to the parks heritage. A new community café is included in the overall plans. There will be an improved entrance into the park which would potentially reduce the number of tennis courts from six to five. The Lawn Tennis Association and Hoole Tennis Club (soon to be Mickle Trafford Tennis Club) are happy to help with improvements to the courts. Footpaths, edgings and drainage would be improved and new park seats, bins and signage introduced. There would be new borders, shrub, herbaceous and bulb planting. Following a tree survey there is an opportunity to introduce a wider range of trees. Replacing some trees would provide a variety of height canopy’s and age range of trees within the park. Cllr Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member Communities and Wellbeing said: “To complete all of the proposed improvement for the park, we will have to seek external funding. The work is likely to be completed in phases and subject to applications for several medium sized and smaller grants. “Following consultation we will be able to produce a priority list of improvements, with a target date of summer 2019 for work to be completed.” Alexandra park is popular and well used with an excellent play area, it’s well-used by community groups, local schools, bowling and fitness groups. The park has two bowling lawns, six tennis courts, a large play area, lawn, ornamental tree, shrub and bedding. However the park needs reinvestment. Footpaths are eroding, the buildings aren’t well used and the signage is poor. The borders require attention and tennis court surfaces are in a poor condition. Chester Family History Group The next meeting on Thursday 22nd February features a talk entitled ‘Unearthing Cheshire’s Quaker community’, a peek into the archives of the local Society of Friends. Members and non-members are very welcome - the meeting is at All Saints Church Hall, Vicarage Road, Hoole, 7.30pm and there will be a small charge at the door.

Newtown student housing is allowed on appeal PLANS for student accommodation near Hoole Bridge have been given the go-ahead on appeal. Local councillors had refused permission for the eight storey 376-bed complex last year but the developers took it to appeal and won. It is a blow for Cheshire West and Chester Council, which now has to pay the costs of developer PJ Properties (Chester) Ltd. Local councillors had complained that the student housing block would ‘stick out like a sore thumb’ and cast a shadow over homes in Black Diamond Street. But a planning inspector disagreed, referring to previous plans which were granted for an office block which was never developed. He also said the student housing would be in keeping with the character and appearance of the area. Chester Adult Phab A social club for people with and without disabilities. We have 75+ members. National Trust Volunteers seeks new members Chester National Trust Volunteers (CNTV) is looking for new members. The group carries out land management tasks within a radius of 30 miles of Chester. Tasks include hedge laying, dry stone walling, path maintenance, planting trees, building tree guards, fencing, and many other tasks that NT Rangers ask us to carry out. CNTV was formed over 25 years ago, a group of around 50 friendly people of varying ages, (18 - 70+), who enjoy friendship, working together and good fresh air. We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral. You can choose to work on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon). Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of like-minded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone. No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job. After completing 50 hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in some of their shops and cafes. If you are looking for an opportunity to spend time outside, give something back to the countryside and have fun – whatever your age or abilities – you can get in touch by contacting Dick Pole at dickpole@zcl-uk.net The work schedule and additional information can be at chesterntv.wordpress.com/ programme/

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

ROSES ARE RED...... BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Maybe as a teenager you wrote the following in an anonymous Valentines Card to some one you fancied, I know I did! “Roses are red, Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet; And so are you “ Or maybe this variation is more appropriate in 2016 ”Roses are red. Violets are blue. Please don’t kiss me, ‘cuz I have the flu.” St. Valentine Day is the day of the year when you can express your love to the people you appreciate and love. But how did it all start? Is it just a cynical ploy by the card industry to get us to part with more money! Well, the story goes that here once was a priest named Valentine, he lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army and he expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars, so they didn’t sign up. This made Claudius furious. So he had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. One of Valentine’s activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, he kept on performing marriage ceremonies – secretly at night. One night, he was caught, thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to his cell window. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. On the day he was to die, he left a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty; he signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” This started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D. Many people mark valentines on this day - greeting cards, which can be romantic, sentimental or funny. The card can be anonymous. Valentine cards became popular in Great Britain in the nineteenth
28 Tel 01244350398
century. Many historians believe that sending poems on this day originated with the capture of Duke of Orleans, during the Battle of Agincourt. Andy Glover has lived in Hoole He sent his wife with his wife Sue for 30 years. a rhyming love Andy began at Hoole Baptist letter, from his Church, on Westminster prison cell in Road, as Youth Pastor, before the Tower of becoming the Pastor and London. February now Team Leader. 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. This year as we celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ remember that love actually is more of a choice than a feeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call ‘love’, and it’s a wonderful feeling, too. People write songs and poems about it; Hollywood film stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of pounds worth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. But recently I read this “There are lots of songs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there aren’t many songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last forever”. Love in a marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it is built upon the foundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have, even when we don’t feel we are in love. Let’s use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to work at “love one another”. For me my relationship with God helps me to love people– as John the disciple of Jesus, reminds us in a letter he wrote about 40 years after Jesus had died, been risen and then ascended into heaven, God is love and love come from God. If we give and receive love then we can reflect something of what God is like and I hope you’ll agree with me, when I say it would be good to see more love expressed in our lives, in our churches, in our communities and in our nation in 2018!!!

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
Signs of spring A
t last spring is on the way with plants coming into growth with the lengthening daylight, even if there is frost and snow. Starting with small flowers, grow a drift of snowdrops, either the native single variety or for a change, buy some double snowdrops. As you can see from the photo, the double snowdrop flower is beautiful. Another flower for early spring is the Winter Aconite or Eranthis. This has bright buttercup yellow, glossy flowers on very short stems. Both snowdrops and Aconites prefer a humus rich soil, well drained, usually under larger shrubs or in woodland. Scented shrubs are a joy in winter as they are unexpected but often highly fragrant coming from relatively small flowers. The Winter Box Sarcococca confusa or Sarcococca Hookeriana is a low evergreen (to 80cms) with tiny white flowers, not much to look at but they pack a powerful fragrance which in a small space, will waft on the breeze. Another choice scented shrub is Daphne bholua Jaqueline Postill. Last year I visited Rode Hall to see the snowdrops and they had many of these shrubs in flower. They will grow to 2.5m tall, are evergreen and have clusters of sweetly scented pink flowers (see photo) all over the shrub. Will grow on any well drained but moisture retentive soil but must have shelter from wind and frost. There are some clematis that will flower in mild periods in winter although you have to bear in mind that many have much smaller flowers than the summer varieties. Clematis cirrhosa Jingle Bells or Freckles will flower in early spring. They have small bell shaped flowers in cream and spotted pink with evergreen foliage. These require shelter and a west or south facing position away from frost and with well drained, moisture retentive soil. If you have an apricot or peach growing against a wall or fence do remember to protect the flowers from frost. They flower in late February or early March so to make sure of a crop put a fleece over it when frost is due and remove during the day to allow pollination. Prune Wisteria new stems from last year back to 2 to 3 buds to encourage flowering but leave the fat buds on older wood alone – they should be your flowers for this year! Cut back dead stems from perennials and grasses being careful to avoid damaging any new shoots. Janet Heath Garden Mentor

Hayley’s health and fitness
Will a personal trainer really help me get to where I want to be? The answer is yes if you get the right one! Think of a trainer as your best friend, your worst enemy, your councillor, your motivational speaker, the person you go to when you are about to give in and someone you will be spending a lot of time with!
Ask for a taster session if you don’t know the person, its important you gel! You will be spending a lot of time with your trainer so make sure you are on the same wave length, so you don’t dread your sessions!
Therefore it’s vital you pick someone you get along with.
Be realistic no matter how good of a trainer you get if you’re not working hard outside your training hours you won’t get results, fact! Don’t expect a few sessions in to have a six pack if you’re out every weekend drinking, you get out what you put in,
Your first decision is Male or Female, males firstly don’t be put off by having a female as your trainer. Don’t for one minute think you will be let off lightly or thing will be easier if you get a female as this is NOT the case. As for men training women, a good trainer will work through what you need to work on and devise a plan that will suit you. So it shouldn’t be unachievable and although you will be sore after your first few sessions, don’t feel like guys are just out to ‘beast you’ (the none technical term for working you too hard that you won’t be able to walk’!) You need to think how much time you have to fit this in, whether its 30 min sessions or an hour, you will need to consider childcare, costs, and how long you can do this for? Think how much you want to achieve your goal, personal training is an amazing tool yet you won’t get the results unless you put the effort in. There is no use training then going home and eating crisps and cakes, what’s the point! Your diet is key and alongside a trainer you must be putting the effort in with your healthy eating also. You can’t do one without the other so plan your meals, food prep and don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach.

Hoole History Corner
The second part of a history walking tour led by Phil Cook, as described by Linda We The development of the Shropshire Union Canal and of industry along it, followed by the arrival of the railways and the building of Chester General Station, have helped to shape the lives of the people across Boughton and Hoole. Members of Hoole History & Heritage Society took a walking tour from Westminster Road Community Centre, onto Boughton via the junction with Hoole Lane, explored this area and the canal side, returning past the long steel footbridge (closed June 2014) next to Westminster Road (Station View) Bridge on the narrow roadway, from which buses and large vehicles are
banned today. This article concludes the second section of the interesting history explored on the tour with Phil Cook, and could be useful to anyone who also wishes to revisit the areas covered. AT THE JUNCTION OF HOOLE LANE AND BOUGHTON: THE SITE OF BOUGHTON HEALTH CENTRE Opened on 5th January 1852, Boughton ‘Ragged School’ stood on this corner site. The first meeting of The Chester Ragged School Institution had taken place on the 6th September 1851. Its objective, reported in the Chester Chronicle, was to provide instruction for the

A History Walking Tour around Hoole and Boughton – Part 2 Webb, from the Hoole History and Heritage Society children of the poor; those who were prevented, by their circumstances, from all other means of improvement, other than by elementary education and industrial training. The Society had decided to establish two ‘day schools’, one on Boughton, and one in Bridge Street. As it was an Industrial School, from 1867, magistrates could send children to this school instead of to prison. It was inspected by the Home Office, not by the Board of Education. In 1870 national compulsory elementary education was introduced and most Industrial Schools ceased to exist. However, this school survived into the twentieth century, finally closing only in 1908. It was the Directors of the Shropshire Union Railway and Canal Company who had made a generous grant of the parcel of land at the corner of Boughton and Hoole Lane. From his detailed research into the history of railways, Phil Cook believes that he has established a link between the location of the school on this site, and the history of early railway development. His theory is that this ‘railway’ land was available to be gifted in 1851, only because of the lack of success in progressing a scheme proposed in 1837. The St. George’s Harbour and Railway Bill had been presented to Parliament then, which included building a harbour at Llandudno, establishing a linking ferry service to Dublin, and constructing a railway to Crewe via Chester and along the North Wales coast to it. There was no suggestion of a station to serve Chester on the plans which Phil has examined, but he believes that this site would have provided the most suitable location for it, had the Bill ever been approved. There were three attempts to get acceptance, and the land may have been speculatively purchased with this in mind. However, the railway lines which were actually constructed led to the building of Chester General Station where it stands today.
It is of interest that Lord Robert Grosvenor was one of two MPs for Chester in 1837. He disapproved of the new- fangled railway and objected to any plan for it to approach or to cross land on the Eaton Estate. Earl Grosvenor’s sons, Richard (1845-1869) and Hugh (1869-onwards), made important personal and philanthropic contributions to the establishment of elementary schools for the poor in Chester in the middle of the 19th Century. Richard supported the opening of St. Paul’s Day School under the Industrial Schools Act, for the children of the workers of the parish at the Leadworks and the Steam Mill. Hugh Grosvenor provided the land and buildings for what became Westminster Road School in 1865 by deed (1841 Act). The Industrial School building was used by the Civil Defence Rescue Service from 1943. It was a civilian volunteer body established by the Home Office, in 1935, and volunteers were ascribed to different units depending on experience or training. The operation of civil defence was the responsibility of the local authority. In 1941, during World War II, it replaced the Air Raid Precautions (ARP), and also included wardens, firemen, the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) and the National Fire Service (NFS), fire watchers, rescue, first aid, stretchers and covered industry. l Website articles will be updated as new information comes to light. You can read this article by visiting the Hoole History website at http://hoolehistorysoc.btck.co.uk/ PlacesRoutesinHoole/WalkingTour2017.
The next meeting of HH&HS is on Thursday February 22nd and the topic is ‘Female Friendly Societies’. The speaker is Stella Young.
