Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hoole History Corner Hoole History and Heritage Society explores the history of Queensway A reader of Hoole & Newton Roundabout has enquired if there is any information about Queensway. It seemed unlikely that a residential road developed partially before and partially after the Second World War would have any detailed history. However, research has established some facts which are of interest not only to Queensway but to the surrounding areas. For many years there was a route from Upton into Chester via Boughton; a plan of Proposed Parliamentary Boundary Changes in 1868 calls Newton Lane the “Upton and Newton Road”. This crossed Hoole Road into what became Hamilton Street, through the Narrow Lane (the Narrows), down Crawford’s Walk, across a bridge over Flookersbrook and then over the canal bridge (built in 1772) into Hoole Lane. The area of Queensway was historically in the Township
of Newton and the Tithe Map c1838 shows the area to be pastureland owned by the Earl of Kilmorey, rented out in fields with wonderful names such as “Mainwaring Hayes “, “The Great Lammas Cote” and “Boswell’s Strive on Traver’s End”. The aerial photograph taken in 1931 enables the field pattern to be seen and also shows houses built on the east side of Newton Lane, where the gap that was to be Queensway can be observed. It also shows properties that already been built at the start of Kingsway. Allotments Pressure for homes in Chester City meant that possible building land outside its boundaries was investigated. Newton, Blacon and Lache came into consideration. In 1936 Hoole Urban District Council which a housing authority, took over 288 acres of building land from Newton
which was only a Parish Council. The map of the District in the late 1940’s illustrates how much land was transferred. The first 12 houses of Queensway were built at right angles to Newton Lane by William Arthur Davies who lived at “Shavington” believed to be No.46 Newton Lane. He had already built properties on Brook Lane. He employed an Architect, C.H. Coppack of Hunter Street, to design some of them just as War broke out and they were not completed until 1952. During the War fields on the west side of Newton Lane were converted into allotments for the ‘Dig for

Victory’ campaign. Most of the houses in the remainder of Queensway (round the bend No.13 being omitted) were built and sold between 1957 and 1960 by E.H. Barley, a builder from Charlotte Street in Chester. E.H. Barley built a large number of properties on the Plas Newton Estate and many
house deeds will contain his details. It has been suggested that Queensway and Kingway were so named because of the support for the Monarchy following the abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936. Unfortunately, part of Kingsway had already been built and named by then.
At our next meeting on Wednesday February 22nd at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre, Linda Webb will explore the history of Hoole’s Allotments which celebrate their 100th anniversary this year.
In your December issue Mike Hoddinott speculates as to whether two prominent families named Walker were related. Records show that this was not the case. Research done mainly by the family of the Walker/Lightfoot/Pickering line (involved in breweries, the liquor trade and tanyard) shows their roots to be very much in the Chester area, with significant business interests in Flookersbrook. Birthplace details in the Census Returns show that the ‘Leadworks’ Walkers originated in Derbyshire and the Northeast of England in places where the leadworking process was being developed. They came to Chester because of the lead ore mined locally, at Minera and on Halkyn Mountain, and because the newly built canal (1772) enabled easy shipping. The painting of the man on horseback was commissioned by the locally born Thomas Walker from Daniel Clowes, a highly regarded painter of race horses, and possibly dates from 1805 after Thomas’s marriage to Catherine Lightfoot. It was exhibited in the Grosvenor Museum in 1985. The rapid growth in information technology is enabling Hoole History and Heritage Society to access original material to clarify and verify the history of the area. CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
Bogus roofers targeted elderly man Police are warning residents to be vigilant following an incident involving a bogus caller in Hoole. During the incident, which occurred on Wednesday 11th January, an elderly man was targeted by cold callers who claimed to be builders and told the man that his roof needed to be repaired. The builders then told the resident that he could do the repairs, but in order to do so he would need to be paid in advance. The old man handed over an initial deposit for the work, but was then asked to provide an additional £6,000, which had to be paid in cash. The victim then went to his local bank to withdraw the money, but thankfully the alarm was raised by a member of staff and the
money was not passed over to the cold caller. Inspector Karen Jaundrill said: “Following this incident I would like to appeal to the local community to look out for elderly relatives, friends and neighbours to help reduce the likelihood of someone else becoming a victim. “I would also like to remind all residents about the importance of people not letting anyone into their home who calls unexpectedly and if you have a chain, always use it. Make sure you ask for identification and if they provide it, close the door and check the number, but most importantly, if you have any doubts about them being genuine, don’t let them in and ask them to come back later when you are not alone. Any suspicious activity should be reported to police.”
There are a number of simple steps that residents can take to protect themselves their families, friends and neighbours, these include: • Check the identity of callers by calling the company they claim to be from. Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller − they may be bogus. • Telephone a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them. • The “Waterboard” has not existed for 28 years; turn away anyone purporting to be from it. • Keep cash in the bank where it is secure. • Consider storing valuable jewellery in bank deposit box - contact your bank for details. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Cheshire Police on 101. Information can also be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

LOVE & MARRIAGE BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
IN the third century, the Roman Empire was becoming difficult to defend and the Emperor, Claudius II, needed more soldiers. He tried to recruit new men, but faced an obstacle in the young wives of his soldiers, who begged their husbands to stay at home rather than fight. So Claudius decided to forbid marriage. Gloom descended on the city but there was a priest who disagreed with the Emperor’s decree and married young lovers in secret. Morale in Rome was restored but Claudius realised that his plan wasn’t working. It didn’t take him long to find out why and on 14th February AD 270 the priest was executed. His name was Saint Valentine - ‘the friend of lovers’.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 28 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
We have lost the reference to the saint and 14th February is now known world-wide as Valentine’s Day. Celebrating it is becoming unavoidable and ‘compulsory’, which can be very hurtful for those who are single and offends those who wish to defend singleness as an acceptable lifestyle. Valentine’s Day is also becoming increasingly sexualised, losing the innocence it once had. A further concern is that much of the commercial and media attention is shallow. Beneath the surface is an expectation that, at best, romance will turn into humdrum marriage and at worst, it will all end in tears. So what should we do? It’s tempting to treat the occasion as corrupted and ignore it entirely. Although this is the easiest solution I think it is wrong because of the biblical emphasis on redemption. If we dig beneath the chocolates, the flowers and the cards, Valentine’s Day is ultimately about romance, which is a precious gift from God, the high value of which is seen throughout the Bible. In Genesis God created human beings as men and women, complementary companions, and throughout the Bible we see that relationships are good. A whole book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, is all about romance. God uses the language of romance to describe his attitude towards his people and Jesus is depicted as the Church’s bridegroom. God’s affection for us is so strong that only the language of romance is adequate to describe it. God gave us romance because He is love. And that’s a good enough reason to try to redeem Valentine’s Day and romance. We should rejoice in romance, affirming the goodness and ultimate value of love between individuals. Romance is also a serious thing. For a couple to enter into a romance is to start that cautious walk together that may lead to the lifelong spiritual, psychological and physical union of marriage. This year as we celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ remember that love actually is more of a choice than a feeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call ‘love’, and it’s a wonderful feeling, too. People write songs and poems about it; Hollywood film stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of pounds worth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. But recently I read this “There are lots of songs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there aren’t many songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last forever”. Love in a marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it is built upon the foundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have, even when we don’t feel we are in love. Let’s use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to work at “being in love” so that the relationship we are in now can by God’s grace last a lifetime!

How will double yellow line PARKING has always been an issue in Hoole – but now the situation has become complicated by the painting of double yellow lines on Faulkner Street. The council’s highways department decided to ban parking along one side of the main shopping street and on a large section of the other side. This means that it is now extra difficult to park on Faulkner Street and businesses will struggle to take stock deliveries. The parking ban follows a review by Cheshire West and Chester Council – but no one we’ve spoken to ever remembers asking for double yellow lines on Faulkner Street which could potentially prove ruinous for small businesses. media: Some of the comments on social joke, won’t George William Carter: “What a vert deli from up h lunc my be able to pick e to park larg too is van our use beca ore anym anywhere!! that high Remina Bastian-Tollet: “Who in sion? Reaction from Sam Jackson, from Chester Beer and Wine - and the Notting Hoole community group: “Notting Hoole have concerns abo ut the new parking policy in Hoole and feel it will have an extremely detrimental effe ct on Hoole businesses. Parking has always been a controv ersial issue in Hoole, and definitely nee ds addressing, however this policy appears to have some very serious drawbac ks. Loading and unloading of goods will now be restricted to before 10.30am and after 4.30pm. The outcome of this is that the majority of the independent bus inesses in Hoole will be unable to get deliveri es. The new rules mean that any veh icle making deliveries, a business who is loading goods to deliver to a customer, or even customers collecting an order, will instantly be ticketed and receive a £60 fine . Notting Hoole had previously bee n assured by CWAC that all parking policies were to be placed on hold until the complet ion of a county-wide consultation which is still underway, and since objections had been made about the scheme we wer e expecting a public meeting on the issue. This policy could undo the achieve ments which we and all the businesses and residents of Hoole have achieved. Please tweet CWAC on: @go_Ch eshireWest using the #HooleLife or add you r comments to our Notting Hoole Facebook Pag e.”

nes affect Hoole’s vitality? Parking was a lottery at times in Hoole, with cars parked on both sides of the road and it was difficult for larger and emergency vehicles to get through. The main car park on Westminster Road is often full, so lots of people simply parked on Faulkner Street, usually only for a short period. If people can’t park there, will they go further into the residential streets, or simply go elsewhere? Is this just council meddling or a sensible attempt to bring some order to a tricky parking dilemma. Hoole is one of the success stories in local retailing, winning national awards, so it could be argued that we shouldn’t seek to change a winning formula.

Burglar caught red handed A burglar caught in the act by police officers has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a number of offences. Michael Langton, 40, previously from Dawpool Close in Newton, appeared at Chester Crown Court to be sentenced. He pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary, attempted burglary and going equipped at an earlier hearing. Langton committed the offences between the evening of 29th November and early hours of 30 November in the Chester area. At each burglary the occupants were in and their doors locked. However, he was stopped in his tracks on the morning of 30th November when an officer on patrol spotted him acting suspiciously and tried to speak to him. He tried to make off on foot as other patrols arrived and was caught by one of the officers. Another officer recovered tools from a driveway and Langton was arrested for going equipped and eventually charged with other offences following an investigation by Chester detectives. DC Andrea Ellis said: “Langton didn’t care whether the occupants were in and forced his way into the three properties. He even made three unsuccessful attempts to break into one of the addresses leaving glass strewn across the rooms he tried to enter. “People should feel safe in their homes, and knowing that someone has forced their way in, while you were present can have a profound effect. Langton’s actions have left the victims angry and violated. I sincerely hope Langton realises the effect of his actions.”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
COLOUR in the Cold FEBRUARY holds the promise of spring in often in cold and frozen conditions so plants have to be tough to flower. February is known as the snowdrop season so try and take time out to visit local woodland or some of the gardens with drifts of snowdrops and other early flowering bulbs. Rode Hall in Cheshire has snowdrop walks from 4th February to 5th March, Dunham Massey has a large winter garden with snowdrops and is open daily then there is Chirk Castle with the display of drifts of snowdrops in the woodland. Other bulbs to look out for are the tiny Scilla or Chionodoxa with their dark to light blue star shaped flowers. They would do well planted with snowdrops and the winter aconite Eranthis hyemalis with their rich buttercup yellow flowers. Dunham Massey gardens plant drifts of the bulbs mentioned above and add the short Iris reticulata varieties. The blue Chionodoxa with the Iris Katharine Hodgkin peeping over the dead leaves makes a lovely show for early spring. In addition there are some shrubs that have scented flowers. The small spidery flowers of Witch hazel or Hamamellis come in a number of different varieties. Some are scented and I would recommend Hamamelis x intermedia Vesna with pale orange flowers. Another classic scented shrub is Daphne mezereum which needs some shelter and does well on any soil but heavy clay soil. The shrub will grow to 1.5 m tall, is evergreen and has heavily scented pink flowers from February onwards. Lastly the winter honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima smells like summer honeysuckle but the flowers are small. This shrub also likes a bit of shelter and also dislikes heavy clay soil. The shrub doesn’t look much in summer with its twiggy stems but earns a place in any garden with winter scent. Run a summer flowering clematis through it in summer to add colour. Late February into March is the time to prune dogwood grown for their stems. If your soil is rich and the plants are growing well, you can cut the stems down to a stump about 30 cms tall and new shoots should be produced. If the plants are spindly, then give them a good feed in March and cut back stems every couple of years. Janet Heath Garden Mentor
