Discounted Fees for ‘Early Bird’ Properties
A
t Somerville’s Estate Agents we have a fantastic offer running throughout January for any ‘Early Bird Sellers’ in the 2015 housing market. With buyer demand still high and a real shortage of good quality homes available, we are keen to satisfy the needs of our registered buyers and are so confident about selling properties that we are currently offering some huge discounts* for all January instructions:
‘
7
The sale fee for all properties up to £200,000 is just £999 and for properties between £200,001 and £250,000 the fee is only £1500! Plus we offer a complete No Sale, No Charge Guarantee meaning you only pay for a successful sale! If you would like a free sale appraisal and valuation of your home, please use the contact details on the opposite page to contact us and arrange an appointment. *Discounts are available for properties above £250,000 on an individual basis. All fees are subject to VAT, terms & conditions apply’.
’
Having dealt with Richard Wheeler twice before, we knew the sale of our home was in safe hands with Somerville’s. Thanks to their innovative approach they managed ten viewings for us on the first day to market and by the second day we’d accepted one of two offers from reliable buyers and at the required sale price - all of which was instrumental in enabling us to secure our own purchase. Moving home can be quite complicated but this is as smooth as it gets! Andy & Kim E., Hoole

Paula Norris, from Hoole Community Centre, with the cheque
Lottery bonanza for Community Centre THERE have been big celebrations at Hoole Community Centre over the last month after it was given nearly £50,000 from the National Lottery’s People’s Millions. The centre had to compete with other good causes from across the region for the cash, which was given to the scheme with most public votes. A big social media campaign did the business for the centre on Westminster Road and the volunteers were delighted to receive a cheque for £49,500. The money will be spent on a community cafe run by volunteers where there is opportunity to socialise; learn new skills and make use of tuition and IT facilities at the centre. Work has already started. They have raised funds to redecorate and refurbish some of the centre but there is more to do, fitting out the café and kitchen.
Hoole Community Centre provides a practical and safe place for local groups. As well as being home to Hoole Library, it is a venue for workshops, classes, meetings, children’s activities and family celebrations. The People’s Millions funding would be used to: l Fit out the room next to the kitchen as the Café, and employ a part-time cook; l Relocate the Library to the adjoining room so that people can enjoy both facilities; l Employ a part-time coordinator to bring together a team of volunteers to assist in the Café and the Library; l Pave and install furniture in the area at the front of the building to enable the café to also operate outside; l Buy Tablet Computers and provide free tuition in how to use them. The overall aspiration of this project is to tackle loneliness and isolation, for all members of the community in Hoole.

Park Lodge campaigners ‘moving on’!
A
successful “Tea Party For The Park” was held in the Hoole Community Centre, writes Gerald Kelly.
When Steve Robinson, Chief Executive of Cheshire West and Chester Council, told local residents who are campaigning to have Alexandra Park Lodge returned to the community, “It’s time to move on”, they did exactly that! Cheshire West and Chester Council refuses to even acknowledge any communication from the group, so protestors have decided to seek legal recourse in their bid to have the original sale of the Lodge (to a property company in February 2013 for £249,000) declared unlawful. Residents’ anger at the council’s sale was further fuelled when they learned in June this year that the property development company had sold the Lodge on for £475,000! Already, plans are in hand to raise funds to seek legal opinion from a barrister with a view to applying to the courts for a Judicial Review of the council’s actions. The ultimate aim is to have the Lodge returned to its rightful role at the centre of

the park, meeting the community and leisure needs of the people of Hoole, who were able to enjoy it, undisturbed for over 100 years, before it was unlawfully sold by the Council. At the ‘Tea Party for the Park’, as well as enjoying tea, home-made cakes and a raffle, more residents added their signatures to the application forms to have Alexandra Park and its Lodge declared an Asset of Community Value. Residents also made pledges to give money to help pay future legal costs. CWAC appears to be the only council in the country who have actually sold off land which is an integral part of a park. This is all the more disgraceful because Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities, has said there is no excuse for councils neglecting or selling off parks and green spaces. Mr Pickles also said that councils should be protecting parks through making savings and drawing on their significant cash reserves - £23 million in the case of Cheshire West and Chester! This unique workout combines the elements of Pilates, yoga, resistance training and ballet into a highly effective regime performed on the mat and at a ballet barre. The technique utilises the body’s own resistance in conjunction with weights, bands and small balls. The effect is a long, lean dancer’s body without being a dancer! The low impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, whilst protecting the joints. Small isometric contractions are performed and integrated with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness.

Hoole Hospice Support Group
We are a small group of enthusiastic local people who wish to support the Hospice of the Good Shepherd at Backford - a fantastic local charity which provides incredible support to local people with life limiting conditions (and their families), writes Jane Forster.
The group was started three years ago with the aim of raising awareness and funds for this wonderful charity. To date we have raised over £7,500 and expect this to top £8,000 soon. We have held coffee mornings, strawberry teas, raffles, stalls, car boot sales and bucket collections and it just goes to show that we can all make a difference. As the chair I wanted to publicly thank all those have joined our group during this time as well as all those who have supported us by attending events, and contributing towards our fantastic achievement. The spirit and generosity of the Hoole community is fantastic including many of the local businesses who have supported us. Should anyone wish to help us going forward we would love to hear from them. Whether it is in providing fund raising ideas, attending events, selling tickets, putting up posters or joining the group, there is a place for anyone who would like to help. We have small informal meetings to suit the group.
If anyone would like to be involved in any way at all or would like more information please get in touch with me -Jane Forster - 07737 023945 or email: jane.forster@btinternet.com or contact The Hospice of the Good Shepherd direct Let’s make a difference in 2015.

Local football teams can play their games during the winter months now that new, improved drainage work is complete at Limewood Playing Fields in the Kingsway area. The £10,000 scheme has been funded by contributions made by developers of new buildings in the local area and will enable local football teams to use the pitch, even when there are poor weather conditions. Newton Councillor Tom Parry said: “This is great news for Newton and for the local football clubs that use Limewood Playing Fields. The new drainage work will result in many young people and adults making use of the playing fields through the winter months”. Glyn Roberts from Hoole Rangers Football Club said: “We are really pleased to have been able to work with the Council to ensure the playing fields are fit for purpose. The improvements will mean that we will not have to postpone games or seek the use of other pitches in the area. I’d like to thank everyone involved.” Michelle Markert from Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor Tom Parry, Councillor Adrian Walmsley and Glyn Roberts from Hoole Rangers Football Club.

Look up....
and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. HOOLE RANGERS FC
Rangers remember World War One truce In honour of the 1914 Christmas Truce centenary this December, a collaboration was agreed between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council. The aim was to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place
on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium where , soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. First-hand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken.

Hoole Rangers 1st team (White shirts / navy shorts ) vs Blacon Thistle,
As a result, all teams playing on 6th December were asked to take photographs of both sides prior to the start of the match, which will be uploaded to a special website – www. footballremembers.com. The site shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. l The new drainage work has been completed on Limewood Playing Fields to help improve the pitch during winter months. (See story on page 28) First team Since my last report, results have been very mixed for the first team, losing 2 and drawing 1 game in the Premier league, and going out of both the Tom Gerraghty Trophy in the first round against 1st division side Hooton, and the Chester Senior cup at the quarter final stage against a very strong Blacon Thistle side. Reserves The reserves are going through a massive transition at the moment. Since James Pike stepped down and Graham Scheuber took over as manager, most of the original players have left the club so Graham has had to manage
a major recruitment activity just to get the matches played. Building a new side takes time, and unfortunately this is reflected in the results, they have lost all 6 league games but won their Cayser Shield cup match 3-2 against Eastham Athletic. We are always looking for new people to get involved with the club. With the exciting plans we have scheduled for the next few years, we are looking for: l New Players. We have 2 teams in the Chester & District League, one in the Premier league and the other in Division 1. l Sponsors. Helping fund items such as tracksuits, match balls, match fees etc. or maybe helping with the changing room refurbishment project l New committee members. to help run the club. If you interested in any of the above positions, please contact me on mobile / e-mail below and I will advise how you can get involved. On behalf of Hoole Rangers, I would like to wish all players, committee members and fans, a Happy New Year

Smartphone boot Hoole CE Primary’s Christmas Fair took technology to the next level by running the first smartphone photo booth. Hundreds of people turned out to the fair on 5th December to celebrate the run up to Christmas and support the school’s fundraising activities. The ‘do-it-yourself’ smartphone photo booth allowed children and parents to dress up in costumes and use props to create and take away their pictures for fun or instant Christmas cards. More than £2,000 was raised during just two hours, with activities that included Santa’s Grotto, artisan stalls stuffed with locally-made gift ideas and of course the first ever smartphone photo booth,. The event, which was organised by Hoole Primary’s Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA), proved to be a win-win for the community, with a focus on the school’s vibrancy and profiling local independent traders who donated prizes and giveaways for the various stalls.
Hoole CE Primary festive service
Hoole CE Primary’s packed winter term calendar continued in December with two services at Hoole All Saints. Rev John Kirkland welcomed around 200 parents and children to the church each night for the Key Stage One and Key Stage Two Performances.

During each of the evening for performances, children retold the Christmas story through readings, drama, songs and music. Headteacher Cheryl Bullen, said: “We are privileged to have such strong links with Hoole All Saints Church.

ooth at festive fair Headteacher Cheryl Bullen, said: “It’s a special evening which represents the strengths of the school and our local community, from our world food stall, to artisan gift makers, a secret Santa stall for children to choose and wrap presents for friends and family and of course the amazing support we receive from Hoole’s independent shops, along side Waitrose and Unilever. I’d like to thank the PTA for its efforts and all the businesses who supported us, and whose support we repay by developing diverse, creative and responsible individuals who’ll make Hoole special for the next generation.” The money raised by the PTA helps fund extra-curricular enrichment activities and play equipment, often making the most of the school’s huge outdoor area, unique to Hoole schools. Last year’s fundraising is currently being applied to upgrading outdoor play equipment, which is due for completion in January.
ices pack All Saints Church This well established relationship affords our pupils many opportunities throughout the year to develop and explore their values and beliefs, facets which will provide the framework for their development as they grow up.
“The children and my team have made a huge effort - including getting soaked in the rain to and from rehearsals - to put on a great show for the parents and I’d like to thank our church for hosting so many of us two nights in succession.”

crime update with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
Gold thefts in HOOLE We have received reports of burglaries in the Hoole and Newton area whereby the thieves appear to be targeting gold and other jewellery. Often these burglars pose as a trader and knock on doors to see if someone is at home during the day. The Cheshire Police are dedicated to making sure that our residents are safe and feel safe. There are plain clothes and uniformed officers patrolling the area, looking for those who may be responsible. I would encourage you to report any suspicious behaviour to the police, always ask anyone attending your address for identification, if you have any doubts that someone is genuine call the police. Feel confident to turn people away from your doorstep if you are not 100% confident that they are genuine. Please ensure that your jewellery is insured. Make a list of it and photograph it against a ruler to give an indication of its size. Register your jewellery with a national database such as ‘immobilise’. Make sure windows and doors are kept locked, especially when you are out. We are particularly interested in descriptions of those involved in such activities and any vehicles they are using, makes, models and registration numbers. You can contact Cheshire Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

RESOLUTIONS BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Here we are in the first month of another brand New Year 2015! The start of a New Year can only mean one thing, New Year resolutions! People will be vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, find a better job, become more organized, exercise more, be more patient, eat better, and ________ (fill in your own resolution). New Year’s resolutions have been with us for 4,000 years, ever since the Babylonians began celebrating the start of each new planting cycle. The Babylonians were the first to have New Year’s resolutions. The most common promises were to return borrowed farm equipment and pay off old debts. I’m all for New Year’s resolutions. But do I keep these resolutions? And what about you? Do you keep your resolutions?
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 26 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
If the Roman god Janus were around today, he’d have a thing or two to say about this. Enshrined in ancient mythology, he was the god of change, transitions, and beginnings. The Romans named the first month of the year after him. Janus was often pictured with a set of keys, in keeping with his role as warden of gates. Shrines to him typically took the form of archways, gateways, and arcades. As for his physical appearance, well, Janus had a face only a mother could love. That’s because he had two faces -- one looking forward, the other backward. This showed his ability to watch entrances and exits. Symbolically, it signalled the need to balance our hopes for tomorrow with a keen awareness of what happened yesterday. It strikes me that Janus might know why so many resolutions are forgotten by February. Could it be that we’re only looking forward -- when we should be looking back in equal measure? We have New Year’s resolutions. What about Old Year reflections? Is it really possible to change, to make a difference in our own lives, in the life of a community or a nation – I certainly think it is. I love the following little story because it illustrates that even when sometime the problems and issues of a person or in a community or across our world can seem insurmountable. If we focus on the enormity of some of these issues it can seem that any one individual can’t possible change anything – but if we recognised that actually each of us can make a difference, if we decide to do something instead of doing nothing, we would see that change is possible. One morning an old man was walking along the beach and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. In the distance he spotted a boy who was gathering up the starfish and one by one was throwing them back into the ocean. He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.” The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?” The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a lot of difference to this one!” Christianity is about the opportunity to change. As we start 2013 may this be the time for you to experience a new beginning, to experience the change you desire to see in your life. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be different because God gives us the power to bring about change. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy, healthy and hopeful New Year! A year when you will see a difference in your life and you make a difference through your life by the good choices you make. 36 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com
