GREAT EFFORT HOOLE’S bid to win the Great British High Street awards looked like it would end in failure after losing out in its chosen category. But the judges were so impressed by the volunteers’ enthusiasm they created a special category just for Hoole. You can read more on page 28. Also, this month there’s the story of how the coming of the railways led to the development of Hoole, crime news with PCSO Keith Bartlett, a financial column, gardening with Janet Heath and Thought for the Month with the Rev Andy Glover. ‘We’re looking forward to 2016!’

A

S Somerville’s enter a new year in the property market, we caught up with the two owner/directors, Annie Somerville & Richard Wheeler to ask for their thoughts about what’s in store for the Chester property market over the next twelve months. With the increase in buy-tolet stamp duty due in March, Richard is predicting a busy start to the year in the investment sector, with many new and existing landlords keen to get transactions through before the March deadline, potentially saving them thousands of pounds. Richard said “We may see the price of investment properties slowing in 2016 to compensate for the increased purchase costs, but homes which could also be purchased by first time byers will remain unaffected.”

With regards to family homes, Annie feels that the steady demand for good quality homes in the 250k-400k price range will continue to support the market and is she is confident that we will see price increases over the year of between 4.5%-6.5%. She adds “Larger, more expensive homes should also see good levels of interest, but price increases tend to be more moderate with buyers concentrating on location and the quality of accommodation for a long-term home rather than cashing-in on market trends.” Overall Annie and Richard are both looking forward to the year ahead and Richard finished by commenting “We have beefed up our sales team and introduced new customer service roles over recent months as we are confident about the year ahead.”

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett I hope you’ve all had a good Christmas, so this month I’m giving out some advice to help people avoid being victims of crime. Many of you will have been given bikes as presents so it’s important that they are kept very safe. Sometimes I’ve found that some very lightweight road bikes worth many thousands of pounds are often kept in a shed with a flimsy lock. My advice is to keep new bikes inside the house, if possible, because thieves are always targeting sheds at this time of year. My other tip is don’t leave your car running and unattended on your drive while defrosting it. It has been known for cars to be stolen with the keys in the ignition, the engine running and the heater on while the owner is in the house. Other tips from Cheshire Police include: l Keep keys away from letter boxes to stop burglars ‘fishing’ for them and letting themselves into the property l Going away at any time this Christmas? Remember to fit timers to your lights to make it look like someone is at home.

Hoole History Corner

Phil Cooke , Hoole History’s local expert on railway history, describes the impact of t

I

N 1841 the small village of Hoole was part of a world where the parish boundary of St Peter’s Church Plemstall (or Plemondstall as it was called in the tithe records) and the city parishes of St Oswald’s and St John’s still shaped the identity of the community and an appreciation of what was lawful. The rigid social hierarchy was based on aristocratic landowners, with shared certainties, in their religious and political principles and matters of taste. Major landowners included the Earl of Shrewsbury and the Hamilton and Broughton families. In 1850 Bagshaw’s Directory described Hoole township in 1841, with its ‘gentile houses’, as “47 Houses and 294 inhabitants” with “ 743 acres of sandy soil” However, between 1841 and 1861, on the same acreage, the population rose from 294 to 1,596. By 1881 just under 3000 people were living in Hoole an increase of 900%! It was the development of the railways, from 1840, which brought people to Hoole from all over the country. Although Chester never became a true Railway Town (like Crewe), the railways did have a direct and major impact in changing permanently the social structure of the city and the employment of its citizens. The history and growth of Hoole, outside the city of Chester, directly flowed from the railways. All of the new arrivals needed accommodation, and, although some railway employees were able

to find cheaper accommodation in New Town and the area around the canal side, the growing workforce needed to be within walking distance of the station. There was a great local demand amongst the many employees of the railways and its associated workshops for appropriate places to live. Land sold to the railway company may have had restrictive covenants preventing industrial development, but these would not have covered residential development. Although there were already some villas and smaller houses north of Hoole Road in Flookersbrook before the arrival of the railways the influx of so many new workers led to the development of a Victorian suburb of considerable diversity. The nature of railways meant around-the-clock working. That demanded that houses had to be built close to the station or the engine shed. This led to the building of some of the terraced houses in Hoole. Development spread from a nucleus around Faulkner Street. Streets of modest terraced housing spread towards the London and North Western Railway Goods yard and across Hoole Road towards the Great Western Railway goods and engine shed. The 1846 map clearly shows the position of the competing railway lines and the proposed site of what became the present Chester station. Have you ever wondered why the modern Hoole Bridge curves instead of going in a straight line on from Hoole Way? The map shows the railway

was built directly across the old straight route from Brook Street onto the turnpike of Hoole Rd. The new route had to go over the railway lines - hence the curve! It was opened in 1849. (The road was needed because there had been a level crossing at first. Once the London to Holyhead line was complete in 1848, there were too many trains, so the road had to go over the lines) CENSUS The 1851 to 1881 census returns for Hoole show the arrival of railway workers from far away, including a railway inspector from Scotland living in Hoole Villas, locomotive firemen in Peploe Street ( now Westminster Road), who had arrived from Penzance, and the Railway Manager, William Peabody from Northamptonshire who lived in Lightfoot Street. Local people also found employment including George Hulse, a porter at Chester Station. George Lloyd, who had been born in Hoole, was a railway policeman.

The variety of jobs listed in the census returns shows the impact of the railways on employment. Listed jobs included railway fitter, engine driver, porter, railway clerks, shareholders and railway agents, engine cleaners as well as other connected trades such as bookbinders, tailors and commissioning agents. In 1899 Hoole was described as a ‘Commercial Nest’ because so many of its residents travelled to Liverpool or elsewhere each day. It was asserted that only 4 out of 75 occupiers in Hoole Road derived their living from Chester. The railways had created a new class of people –the commuters!

Hoole wins best newcomer award Hoole came up just short in the Great British High Street Awards – but there was a very nice consolation prize. Hoole was up for the best local centre section but despite leading in the early voting, we lost out to Bishy Road. However, the judges were so impressed with the enthusiasm of the team of volunteers in Hoole that they decided to set up a special category of ‘best newcomer’. Sue Mason, one of main protagonists behind the bid, said: “The category made just for us because of our passion humour and heart throughout the competition and demonstration of outstanding achievements over a short period of time. By working with both independents and national retailers and our commitment to growing the evening economy, the team have put Hoole on the map. “We are thrilled with our success and can’t thank everyone for your support throughout the campaign.”

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

HERE we are in the first month of another brand New Year 2016! The start of a New Year can only mean one thing, New Year resolutions! People will be vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, find a better job, become more organized, exercise more, be more patient, eat better, and ________ (fill in your own resolution). New Year’s resolutions have been with us for 4,000 years, ever since the Babylonians began celebrating the start of each new planting cycle. The Babylonians were the first to have New Year’s resolutions. The most common promises were to return borrowed farm equipment and pay off old debts. I’m all for New Year’s resolutions. But do I keep these resolutions? And what about you? Do you keep your resolutions?

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

If the Roman god Janus were around today, he’d have a thing or two to say about this. Enshrined in ancient mythology, he was the god of change, transitions, and beginnings. The Romans named the first month of the year after him. Janus was often pictured with a set of keys, in keeping with his role as warden of gates. Shrines to him typically took the form of archways, gateways, and arcades. As for his physical appearance, well, Janus had a face only a mother could love. That’s because he had two faces -- one looking forward, the other backward. This showed his ability to watch entrances and exits. Symbolically, it signalled the need to balance our hopes for tomorrow with a keen awareness of what happened yesterday. It strikes me that Janus might know why so many resolutions are forgotten by February. Could it be that we’re only looking forward -- when we should be looking back in equal measure? We have New Year’s resolutions. What about Old Year reflections?

Is it really possible to change, to make a difference in our own lives, in the life of a community or a nation – I certainly think it is. I love the following little story because it illustrates that even when sometime the problems and issues of a person or in a community or across our world can seem insurmountable. If we focus on the enormity of some of these issues it can seem that any one individual can’t possible change anything – but if we recognised that actually each of us can make a difference, if we decide to do something instead of doing nothing, we would see that change is possible. One morning an old man was walking along the beach and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. In the distance he spotted a boy who was gathering up the starfish and one by one was throwing them back into the ocean. He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.” The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?” The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a lot of difference to this one!” Christianity is about the opportunity to change. As we start 2013 may this be the time for you to experience a new beginning, to experience the change you desire to see in your life. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be different because God gives us the power to bring about change. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy, healthy and hopeful New Year! A year when you will see a difference in your life and you make a difference through your life by the good choices you make. 34 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Winter treasures

JANUARY is difficult for colour in the garden. For inspiration I would visit Ness Botanic Gardens on the Wirral or Dunham Massey Gardens near Altrincham and enjoy the wide variety of colour and interest from flowers, foliage and bark. In mild periods in January the winter heather Erica carnea varieties, will give colour from pink and white flowers. When a few varieties are grown together on a sloping bank, they look spectacular. Although they like a well drained acid soil in sun, they will tolerate slightly alkaline soils. Bark is one of the main delights in winter. I love the red and yellow stems of Cornus or dogwood which contrast well against the dull grey brown of deciduous shrubs. If you have plenty of space and can position it well away from houses, a silver birch, Betula jacquemontii with white bark looks lovely in winter. Plant around it with the red stemmed Cornus alba Eligantissima and yellow to orange stemmed Cornus sanguinea Winter Beauty. Then scatter around clumps of snowdrops, crocuses and early small daffodils for a wonderful winter show from December to March. Lastly, my choice of winter flowers is dominated by the magnificent Hellebore orientalis varieties. These robust plants with leathery leaves (which I cut off in November so you can see the flowers) will flower throughout winter with a show of white, pink and plum purple colours. They will grow in sun and light shade and are good for heavy clay soils but also cope with dry shade and well drained soils. Just leave them in position for a few years and the plant will clump up. They also seed well and you will often find tiny plants growing around the base which you can grow on and spread around the garden. Do beware that the sap from the plant will cause severe vomiting so always wear gloves when handling the plant and wash your hands afterwards. It is best not to grow them if children are around. Work to do in the garden? Finish pruning shrubs and start pruning apples and pear trees. Mulch the soil with organic matter such as compost from your compost bins, well rotted manure or get bags of soil improver from the recycling centre. Put a layer 3 to 4cms deep over any bare soil and the worms will gradually take it down for you

Joining the gym!? I know many people that have come to me and state I attend the gym three or four times per week and I still haven’t lost weight. The thing to consider is what you are actually doing at the gym, a 15 minute jog on a treadmill, few bicep curls and sit ups isn’t going to really do anything. You’ll end up eating more when you get in, because you think you deserve too “because you go the gym” and unless you really know what you’re doing it can be a waste of time. and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about
