Do you have an interest in helping the younger generation? Passion for Learning is an innovative, charitable organization, committed to enthusing children about reading and learning by making it fun, exciting and motivating. Our volunteers work 1:1 with primary school children (ages 4-11) to bring them books, games and activities that increase their skills and help them to grow in confidence. Above all, the work that Passion for Learning does is full of imagination and fun. We want to make children curious about their world and keen to find out more. Volunteers go into school during the school day, spending about half an hour with each child. Our volunteers establish strong connections with the children, so Passion for Learning looks for commitment and reliability. Schools are very flexible and understand that volunteers may have other commitments, but we try and agree a routine at the start which accommodates both the volunteer and the children. Speaking as a volunteer myself, I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever done. It is so rewarding seeing

the children begin to gain confidence in their reading or become enthusiastic about a subject they perhaps had no knowledge of before. It is only a short amount of time each week but it can make the most incredible difference to the children. Our volunteers are a diverse group of men and women of all ages. Previous experience of working with children is not necessary. Enthusiasm, imagination, a good sense of humour and, most of all, a passion for learning is all that is required. Passion for Learning works hard to ensure that volunteers enjoy an excellent experience providing full training, regular ongoing support and a wealth of social activities that ensure that the team feels like a very big family. We are seeking volunteers to go into local primary schools – can you help us? To find out more, please contact Diane Clark on 07966 404355 or 0151 356 8717 or email diane.clark@passion-for-learning.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

• Could you spark curiosity in a child? • Could you jump into a book and make it come to life? • Could you play and make learning fun?

To find out more, come and join us for a coffee! We will be at Hobson’s Café, Hoole at 10.00 – 12.00 on the 1st Wednesday of every month and at Storyhouse from 10.00 – 12.00 on the 3rd Wednesday of every month

➢ We are looking for volunteers to work with children in local primary schools on a regular basis. ➢ No previous experience needed and full training will be provided. To find out more, please contact: diane.clark@passion-for-learning.com or call 07966 404355 / 0151 356 8717

Traditional Sunday lunch in a contemporary venue ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE: The Suburbs, Charles Street, Hoole

A tasty, home-made, traditional roast dinner is hard to beat – and is even better when you don’t have to make it yourself!

homemade gravy, enjoyed with a chilled glass of fizz. What’s not to love on a winter Sunday afternoon?

Having visited the Suburbs, I have now found my new favourite place to enjoy a Sunday lunch, writes Hayley Ryder.

Everything was cooked to perfection, it was tasty and I couldn’t fault any of it. As someone who dines out frequently, I can say that the Suburbs is among the finest places to eat out in this area. And it’s good to know that their specials are locally sourced from Hoptons butchers and Bricklands fishmongers.

The Suburbs has, for a number of years, been the ‘place to be seen’ in Hoole, with its modern, chic look. You have to love the Suburbs, with its unique, quirky décor, fabulous cocktails and its relaxed atmosphere. Now, with a new menu, the Charles Street venue is offering ‘home-made’ roasts that will make you think twice about making Sunday lunch at home. We were served a platter full of homemade Yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes, vegetables cooked to perfection with chunky slices of beef with a generous amount of

So, on your next available Sunday, get the family together (children are welcome too), reserve a table, and prepare to enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared Sunday dinner. You might even wish to sample some of their famous cocktails or a glass of something from their extensive wine list. And you don’t even have to do the washing up!

Appeal follows store robbery Detectives investigating an armed robbery after a shopkeeper was attacked in a local store in Chester are appealing for witnesses. Shortly before 8pm on Monday 4th December a man, holding a knife entered the shop on Brook Lane, jumped over the counter and made demands for cash from the till. The offender threatened the victim to open the till before removing a quantity of cash, the suspect also stole alcohol. He then left the store in the direction of Ermine Road. He is described as being white, aged between 30-50, 5ft 8 in height and of a medium build. He was wearing a grey beanie hat, a blue ski jacket with white on the collar and underneath each arm with blue jeans and dark trainers with a white sole.

The victim attended the Countess of Chester Hospital and received treatment for minor injuries. Detective Constable Tom Philpotts, of Chester CID, said: “Understandably this has left the victim shaken. There were lots of people in the area at the time who may have seen the suspect before he went in the shop and when he left. I also want to appeal to any customers who were in the shop at the time the robbery took place. I believe a customer entered the shop and saw the robbery happening and I would urge you to come forward as you could have vital information which could help us catch this person.” You can contact Cheshire Police on 101.

Hoole Rangers celebrate 25 yea H

oole Rangers will celebrate their 25th anniversary in the summer.

To recognise this milestone, the club plan to arrange a football match on Saturday 19th May, featuring as many of our past and present players as possible. It will be followed by an evening social event for everyone who has been involved with the club over the years, such as players, committee members and their families. In order to get an idea on the number of players for the match and total numbers for the evening event, we would like to invite any past players or committee members to get in touch with either Glyn or Mark Roberts on any of the contact methods below…or with anyone else connected with the club.

The Chester and Wirral Football league (CWFL) have been quick to recognise that football needs to become more flexible in order to accommodate modern lifestyles, weekend working, family, and wider social activities. Many players cannot commit to being available every Saturday, so last season, CWFL started Friday and Monday night leagues where teams play on artificial pitches under floodlights. This was so successful it has grown for this season, and the league are now looking to extend their scope to allow Saturday Development leagues. This is where clubs can enter new teams into a Saturday league, but have total control of who and when they play. The goal is to allow clubs to grow their playing staff, offer an opportunity for players with limited availability to play without the pressure of being available every week, and ultimately encourage new teams to be entered into the full-time leagues at some point.

Contact Details Glyn Roberts: 07515 805966 l Mark Roberts: 07427 553731 e-mail: HooleRangers@Gmail.com Facebook: ‘Mark Roberts’ or you can search for ‘Hoole Rangers FC’

years in summer 2018 The team status update below is by Adam Roper, club Coach and first team vice captain:

‘Firstly as a club we have reached our 25th season this year which is a fantastic landmark for us and I know all the lads are really proud to be part of a team that has been built up and maintained through thick and thin by the Chairman Glyn Roberts and First Team Manager Mark Roberts. There are few examples of clubs that have survived for this length of time and this is due to the commitment and continued effort that they both still put in on a weekly basis and their enthusiasm is infectious and a great motivator for all the players. In terms of our performances and progress this season so far, I think it would best be described as mixed. We have put in some really good performances and come away with draws rather than the wins that the effort and application has deserved and this has seen us in a somewhat false position in the league as we reach the half way stage. This has motivated the lads even more than

ever to ensure we come off the pitch with the three points each week and we are still confident that we can progress up the table in the second half of the season with plenty of key fixtures still to come over the next few months. In terms of players we have a great mix of youth and experience in the squad including an ex-professional along with a couple of league veterans who bring masses of ability and know what playing in this league is about whilst at the other end of the scale we have a great group of younger lads just finding their feet but with bags of skill and potential. This is why as well as the first team this year we have also put together a development squad to allow all of the players signed for the club to experience competitive football and put themselves in a position to break into the first team when opportunities arise. The development team fixtures are being arranged as and when the first team schedule allows and this is a great opportunity for any new players or people looking to play competitively to sign for a great local club and get involved.’

RESOLUTIONS -2018 BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Here we are in the first month of another brand New Year 2018! The start of a New Year can only mean one thing, New Year resolutions! People will be vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, find a better job, become more organized, exercise more, be more patient, eat better, and ________ (fill in your own resolution). New Year’s resolutions have been with us for 4,000 years, ever since the Babylonians began celebrating the start of each new planting cycle. The Babylonians were the first to have New Year’s resolutions. The most common promises were to return borrowed farm equipment and pay off old debts. I’m all for New Year’s resolutions. But do I keep these resolutions? And what about you? Do you keep your resolutions? If the Roman god Janus were around today, he’d have a thing or two to say about this. Enshrined in ancient mythology, he was the god of change, transitions, and beginnings. The Romans named the first month of the year after him. Janus was often pictured with a set of keys, in keeping with his role as warden of gates. Shrines to him typically took the form of archways, gateways, and arcades. As for his physical appearance, well, Janus had a face only a mother could love. That’s because he had two faces -- one looking forward, the other backward. This showed his ability to watch entrances and exits. Symbolically, it signalled the need to balance our hopes for tomorrow with a keen awareness of what happened yesterday. It strikes me that Janus might know why so many resolutions are forgotten by February. Could it be that we’re only looking forward -- when we should be looking back in equal measure? We have New Year’s resolutions. What about Old Year reflections? Is it really possible to change, to make a difference in our own lives, in the life of a community or a nation – I certainly think it is. I love the following little story because it illustrates that even when sometime the problems and issues of a person or in a community or across our world can seem insurmountable. If we focus on the enormity of some of these issues it can seem that any one individual can’t possible change anything – but if we recognised that actually each of us can make a difference, if we decide to

28 Tel 01244350398

do something instead of doing nothing, we would see that change is possible. One morning an old man was walking along the beach Andy Glover has lived in Hoole and noticed the with his wife Sue for 30 years. tide had washed Andy began at Hoole Baptist thousands of Church, on Westminster starfish up on Road, as Youth Pastor, before the shore. In the becoming the Pastor and distance he spotted now Team Leader. a boy who was gathering up the starfish and one by one was throwing them back into the ocean. He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.” The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?” The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a lot of difference to this one!” Christianity is about the opportunity to change. As we start 2018 may this be the time for you to experience a new beginning, to experience the change you desire to see in your life. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be different because God gives us the power to bring about change. We will be running a new course called Start – 6 evenings over 6 weeks to explore a fresh Start to not only the New Year but maybe even a New Life. Email hello@hbc.org.uk if you’d like to know more. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy, healthy New Year! A year full of hope and one where you will see a difference in your life and you make a difference through your life by the good choices you make.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Winter colour for January

J

anuary is a time to wait for spring, with bulbs just peeping through. Time to look and appreciate the shapes of evergreens in the garden. There are plants with dramatic shapes such as evergreen Phormiums or New Zealand Flax, with their long sword shaped leaves. They make a bold statement in any garden and come in a range of sizes and colours. Some have white and green leaves, others red, orange, plum and plain green. They need some shelter from wind and a well drained soil with moisture. The smaller ones can be grown in pots, so Bronze Baby with reddish purple tinged leaves will grow to about 1m tall and wide. Some such as Phormium tenax Pupureum will get to 2m tall and almost as wide. Pair them with low Janet Heath Garden Mentor

growing mounded plants around the base. Another plant that will stand out in winter is the pine Picea pungens Hoopsii with pale blue/ grey needles on a slow growing tree which will make up to 4m in time. It needs to be in an exposed position with sunlight all around to make the perfect Christmas tree shape and have moist but well drained soil. To appreciate the tree, plant around it with low growing shrubs such as Euonymus Emerald n Gold or Silver Queen with their variegated foliage. Some winter heathers will be in flower in January with pretty pink or white flowers. Trim the bush back after flowering. If you want more substantial flowers I always recommend Hellebore orientalis varieties. These robust perennials with leathery

01244 318258 / 07984 627270 janet@gardenmentor.co.uk

glossy green leaves and large flowers come in white, pink and deep plum shades, some with speckled flowers, some are double but all flowers in the depths of winter. Cut most of the leaves off in late autumn so you can see the flowers developing. They like medium or heavy soils with plenty of humus and can flower in light shade under larger shrubs. Not ideal in full sun but I have one that copes with being baked in summer! Prune deciduous shrubs and climbers when you can see the branches free of leaves. You can get a good shaped shrub when pruned out of leaf. Pick up and diseased leaves from around the base of roses to try and reduce blackspot next season. Prune apples and pears now but not cherries or plums.

Hayley’s health and fitness

NO MORE EXCUSES.... Make 2018 your YEAR! I hear it all the time, excuse after excuse, granted some are genuine, but when it comes to getting fit and ditching bad food, people really will think of all sorts to put off starting a diet and healthier lifestyle. How many times have you heard people say: “I don’t have the time!” classic for I am not prepared to make time. As a busy working Mum, I completely understand that time is so limited and you almost feel selfish by spending some evenings jumping about a hall getting fit when you could be at home lightening the work load. However, over the years this what happens... Women come to me to get fit before their big day, they lose weight, feel fantastic and vow never to go back to bad habits. They get married life changes and fitness is no longer on the agenda. Comfort eating, bad food choices and minimal movement takes over. What happens... you gain weight and start feeling sluggish, rubbish about self. You buy bigger sized baggy clothes and become stuck in a rut! In the back of your mind you know you should do something about it but pushing yourself to make that first step seems unmanageable. Take a snap of you now and write down how you feel. Pop that away along with the date you took it. Secondly get a diary and note when you can make time for you! With training sessions when devised properly only taking up 30 minutes a night surely you can squeeze a few of these in. Take into account partners shifts, childcare etc. Get a workout buddy, someone who is motivated, someone that will drag you there if need be. Pick a work out you enjoy! There is no point joining a gym if you hate running on a treadmill and have no idea what you’re doing with

32 Tel 01244350398

weights. It’s about using your time wisely, getting the most from a work out in the shortest amount of time possible! There are so many classes running that will be pay as you go, don’t tie yourself down to contracts - you’ll begrudge it even more if not enjoying it and still have to pay the money. Go and give it your all, you’re there you might as well work your socks off! Try a few different things whether its Zumba, Boogie Bounce, Hiit training, Abs class and remember variety is good! Sticking to one Exercise 3 times per week all year is good but you’ll get more if you mix it up, a good instructor will often change routines and mix sessions up every 4-6 weeks which will allow your body to get more out of it! Lastly stick at it and match your diet to the hard work your putting in. The fact is you will see better results with a good training plan and a healthy varied diet to match. Commitment is the key, make 2018 the year for you! And watch how this has a huge positive impact on the other factors in your life. Track your progress, whether it’s an inch, a dress size, a few lbs anything is better than nothing. Don’t use the scales as your only method of monitoring, remember building muscle means you can drop inches but the scales will stay the same. Don’t get disheartened if you don’t see changes straight away, a good eight weeks of healthy eating and exercises and you will not only feel different your clothes should fit better too. Hoole History Corner

The first part of a history walking tour led by Phil Cook, as described by Linda Webb, The development of the Shropshire Union Canal and of industry along it, followed by the arrival of the railways and the building of Chester General Station, have helped to shape the lives of the people across Boughton and Hoole. Members of Hoole History & Heritage Society took a walking tour from Westminster Road Community Centre, onto Boughton via the junction with Hoole Lane, explored this area and the canal side, returning past the long steel footbridge (closed June 2014) next to Westminster Road (Station View) Bridge on the narrow roadway, from which buses and large vehicles are banned today. From the Junction of Hoole Lane and Boughton Arriving at the junction, standing outside the Health Centre, it is hard to imagine it as the open undeveloped land it was in the early 1800s. Buildings which stood before the Civil War, were razed to the ground by Parliamentary forces when Chester was besieged, and the road, which follows the route of a Roman road, has been in use for a very long time.

ST PAULS CHURCH

St. Paul’s Church dates from 1830. John Douglas, a member of its congregation, rebuilt the complex, adding the south aisle in 1902 and the spire in 1905. St. Paul’s School also began its life in a hall below the church, moving to a location near the canal later. The rise in the ground near St. Paul’s Church was called Gallows Hill; it was last used for public execution on 9th May 1801. Many buildings in and around Chester are the work of either John Douglas or Thomas Lockwood, who was the architect of the Campbell Memorial Hall (1876) beyond the church. It was originally the church hall and caretaker’s cottage. The Memorial Hall was the location of a British Restaurant during the Second World War. It provided a staple meal for about one shilling and sixpence and was set up by the government in order to supplement food rations. There was also a British Restaurant established in the Mission Hall on Westminster Road in Hoole. Looking in the opposite direction, towards the centre of Chester, almost facing the end of what is now City Road, we imagined The Barrs, the ancient gateway built across the road, from which stretched the outer line of fortifications during the Siege of Chester in the Civil War, which had been removed in the early 1770s.

THE BARRS

An area densely packed with industry and housing The construction of the canal during the 1770s, the building of the Leadworks and shot tower in 1800, the arrival of the railways in 1840, followed by construction of the water company’s reservoir, filter beds and water tower, led to this area becoming densely packed with industry and with housing.

Looking east to where Boughton divides, the distinctive black and white building, dating from 1900, was designed by John Douglas for the Co-operative Society and stands on the site of the ancient Boughton Chapel (destroyed 1643). The Co-op store in Walker Street, Hoole (although not designed by John Douglas) was also built at this time. John Douglas was a noted Chester architect and he designed the original building of what became Westminster Road School, now Hoole Community Centre.

Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.

A History Walking Tour around Hoole and Boughton – Part 1

ebb, from the Hoole History and Heritage Society A large number of terraces of small houses were built to the north of the main road through Boughton and along Hoole Lane towards Station View. The Steam Mill was built for the firm of F.A. & J. Frost, millers, renamed F.A. Frost & Sons in 1854. Once a disused cotton mill, the present structure, with its tower, dates from 1834. By 1892 around 100 people worked there. When Milns Seeds took over the building the name on the mill tower changed.

LITTLE IRELAND

It has been suggested that some of the Irish troops who fought in the Civil War may have settled in Boughton, and there were small waves of Irish migrants who arrived 1730 and 1748. However, the Potato Famine of 1851 saw an influx of Irish families into what became known as ‘Little Ireland’. The building of the canal, and the railways and Chester General Station, created opportunities for employment. The 1851 census recorded 12 Irishmen employed as railway labourers. However, 271 were shown to be working as agricultural or farm labourers. Many of the early terraces of housing were of poor quality and quickly built for owners to rent out. There was also overcrowding. The census recorded 18 people living in one small house in Steven Street (below)

In October 1851 the Chester Chronicle reported on a controversy over the definition of the term ‘Boughtonian’, pointing out that the term was not being used to describe the respectable gentry of Boughton. Rather, it was applied to ‘poachers, vagrants and idle persons who infest’ Boughton, and ‘who are a pest’ to the whole community. In 1857 St. Paul’s school moved from the hall beneath the church and opened as a Day School under the Industrial Schools Act, into the grounds of the Industrial School. It was for the children of the Steam Mill and Leadworks

workers of the parish, where it remained until 1941. Irish immigration had highlighted social problems already in existence. In Hoole, the 1851 Census records labourers who were employed in industries along the canal, as well as in jobs connected with the operation of railways and Chester General Station. The Leadworks of Walkers, Parker& Co was established on the north side of the new canal in the late 1790s. The opening of the canal and the availability of land enabled them to purchase all the land between what became City Road and Hoole Lane, between the canal and the land which became the railway. In 1854 the site covered 16 acres. The Shot Tower is 168ft tall, with a diameter at the base of 30 feet narrowing to 20 feet at the top. It has been estimated that, with two other shot towers in Britain at that time, at least a third of the musket balls fired by the British at Waterloo were made here. It is probably the oldest such structure still standing in the world. It is Grade 2* listed. The oldest public clock in Chester, made in 1803 by Whitehurst of Derby, was installed in the wall of one of the sheds facing the canal opposite St. Paul’s Infants School. After production ceased in 2001, the clock was removed, and, possibly, stolen. St. Paul’s school site, in the grounds of the Industrial School, was occupied by Boughton Retail Park. St. Paul’s had moved a little further west in 1972-3, until 2008, when it was closed and quickly demolished. It was in 2014 that further redevelopment led to the building of the Waitrose Store, car park and units. In August 2016 local newspapers reported that a second redevelopment plan for the Leadworks and Tower area, designed by Broadway Maylan, award winning architects, had been approved to commence. This followed a serious fire in the tower in December 2015. On completion of the new scheme the base of the shot tower will become a Heritage Interpretation Centre with a focus on the historical elements of the Leadworks site. l This article is already available on HH&HS website,

The next meeting of HH&HS is on Wednesday January 17th and the topic is ‘The petition (Memorial) for a new bridge in Hoole’. The speaker is Monty Mercer.
