Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Second time lucky as Hoole triumphs in high street awards Hoole has beaten hundreds of high streets across the country to be named one of Britain’s best. Hoole took on the challenge of Claygate in Surrey and The Pantiles in Tunbridge, and won the ‘local centre / parade of shops’ category of the Great British High Street Awards, following a public vote. Hoole received £5,000 and was awarded a trophy by High Streets Minister Andrew Percy at a ceremony in London on 12th December. Samantha Jackson from Chester Beer and Wine said: “We worked for two years to get this far, we put our heart and soul into this competition. Long live the high street!” Judge Jaya Relwani from Ellandi said: “Hoole was last year’s ‘best newcomer’ and since then they’ve gone from strength to strength to win their category in the Great British High Street Competition. “The sense of community and collaboration was so impressive that, along with thousands of votes, they really deserved to win.” The overall winner was Blackburn. Winners in each category will not only get a share of a prize pot worth £100,000, but they’ll win expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants, and a trip to Twitter UK’s London office to boost their social media skills.

Hoole History Corner
Hoole History and Heritage Society explores the history of the Hoole Road War Mem
H
oole History and Heritage Society has played its part in commemorating the anniversary of The Great War 1914- 1918.
Our Treasurer, Dave Rees has been tireless in working to explore the stories of those listed on the memorial on Hoole Rd as well as tracking down the names and histories of those who are not listed. Many of the streets in Hoole had members of the armed forces who gave their lives in 1914 -1918 and there are still many families where the men who served are remembered.
“That’s my uncle!” That was the sudden cry from a member of the audience at a Society presentation by Dave Rees when the picture of James Edward Bowe was put on the screen. Private Bowe, who lived at 77 Faulkner St and served in the 7th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. He died in the battles around Ypres on 22nd September 1917. His captain wrote to his father “ 1st Oct., 1917. Dear Mr. Bowe, - The sad news of the death of your son will have reached you by now. I hope and trust that it will ease your sorrow a
little when I tell you that he died nobly and uncomplaining doing his duty, and that it is due to his
Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.
War memorials
Memorial and Hoole’s war heroes sacrifice and to the sacrifice of many of his comrades that our line is still advancing and peace thereby brought nearer...” l Another casualty, also listed the memorial book “We Shall Remember Them” published in 1915 by the Great War Study Group of St Werburgh’s Parish, was Andrew Sumpter whose family lived in Faulkner St, Panton Rd and Shavington Avenue. The family which was in the building business is remembered today because it gave its name to Sumpter Pathway off Panton Rd. Andrew, who served in 10th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, died on August 1st 1917 during the long and very bloody Passchendaele battles. There are a number of memorials to the sacrifices made by Hoole residents. These include the War Memorial on Hoole Road and those at All Saints Church and the Community Centre. Additionally, St Werburgh’s parish also has its own memorial which records parishioners who lived in Hoole. l The War Memorial on Hoole Road is familiar to us all and was dedicated on 1 April 1923 with names from World War Two added in 1949. However, although it is familiar to us now it might have been very different.
The first idea for a war memorial was discussed by Hoole Urban District Council in July 1916 when a Roll of Honour listing all those who served in the Armed Forces was considered. It was considered again on 11 November 1918, Armistice Day, at a special meeting of HUDC The initial suggestions were for a Memorial Hall and a large stone memorial listing all who served to be sited by the bowling greens in Alexandra Park. In fact, the Memorial Hall idea wasn’t formally abandoned until March 1921. Eventually the design we know was chosen, listing those from Hoole and Newton who had given their lives. This was unveiled by Lieutenant General Sir Beauvoir De Lisle on Easter Sunday 1 April 1923 in a service conducted by the Bishop of Chester assisted by Rev. Pavitt from All Saints. The General Station band played and there were representatives from the Councils, Hoole Fire
Brigade, British Red Cross and the Guides and Scouts, among a large crowd filling all of Hoole Road. As a key part of ongoing remembrance, Hoole History and Heritage Society is participating in a project led by The Imperial War Museum and Commonwealth War Graves Commission in conjunction with Chester Civic Trust. This major project, based at the Imperial War Museum London, aims to list and locate more than 100,000 war memorials in the United Kingdom from all conflicts, ranging from a small plaque on the wall to a large town memorial, so that they can be preserved for the future. If you know of other memorials or have information about those named on, or missing from, the memorials do please contact us at hoolehistory@ hotmail.co.uk, 01244346151 or via the website www. hoolehistorysoc.btck.co.uk/
l At our meeting on Tuesday January 17th Ralph Earlam will continue the history of The Ermine and share some newly found information about Folly House and the Lightfoot and Walker families.

Artistic Alice in dreamland
The results are in and the winners of the Hoole Life & Somerville’s children’s art competition have been announced! The lucky winner Alice Bengree of Hoole C of E School, has not only won book tokens for her school, but she will also see her work displayed on all Somerville’s arty For Sale boards in Hoole throughout 2017. The two runners up, Lola Perry and Lottie Abbott Beck have also won prizes for their school. Somerville’s Estate Agents, based in Hoole, have used famous works of art on their ‘arty’ For Sale boards since their opening in 2014. It was this association with art which gave imaginative owners Annie Somerville and Richard Wheeler the idea to incorporate their interest in art and their love of Hoole in an art competition for all Primary School children in the Hoole area. “It was just one of those lightbulb moments” said Richard. “We have sold houses for many parents in the area and it was whilst chatting one day that the idea came about.” The idea took off and hundreds of entries flooded in as all the youngsters of Hoole took to their pencils and paints. “The judging was so difficult as we loved all the pictures,” said Annie, “but we invited Maggie Jackson, a Lecturer in Art at University of Chester, and Samantha Jackson of fundraising group Notting Hoole (who co-sponsored the competition) along to form the judging panel.” “We all agreed that the standard of work was excellent, and there’s plenty of artistic talent in Hoole, but after much debate we eventually chose a winner who conveyed the community spirit we all love in Hoole. It’s been a fantastic experience and we can’t wait to display the new artwork on our For Sale boards in the New Year!” For each Hoole Life For Sale board put up, Somerville’s Estate Agents will make a donation to the Hoole Christmas Lights Fund for 2017. 12 Tel 01244 350398

Hoole artist inspired by young sons
H
OOLE artist Anne-Marie Rickus thought she would have to put her paint brushes away when motherhood came along. The busy mum of two initially struggled to find time to create her art while bringing up two young boys. But then she started to sketch them and their innocent, quirky, heart-warming ways. And now she has turned these scrappy sketches into a series of limited edition giclee prints which are available to buy. Anne-Marie said: “I was an artist before having my children. I created my own work, as well as teaching and facilitating workshops and community arts projects. “I had my first son in 2012 and as I wasn’t able to spend as much time doing my own artwork I started to sketch him. At first it was just a personal project - a visual journal documenting his everyday little ways. I continued to draw him and then when his younger brother came along in 2014 kept up the practice. “These little sketches were only ever meant to be kept tucked away in a sketchbook - something for me to look back on in later years and show the boys when they were older. However, I showed some friends who really liked them, identified a lot with the images and so I decided to make them into more finished pieces and then get giclee prints produced of them with the view to selling them.” Anne-Marie describes her work as loose and expressive, capturing the essence of the scene. You can view some of her work at the Not on the High Street website and search for ‘annemariericusart’ Anne-Marie only produces 100 prints of each image - limited edition run. And £1 from every sale goes to SPACE, a local charity for families with children with additional needs.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
Here we are in the first month of a brand New Year – 2017! The start of a New Year can only mean one thing, New Year resolutions! People will be vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, find a better job, become more organized, exercise more, be more patient, eat better, and ________ (fill in your own resolution). New Year’s resolutions have been with us for 4,000 years, ever since the Babylonians began celebrating the start of each new planting cycle. The Babylonians were the first to have New Year’s resolutions. The most common promises were to return borrowed farm equipment and pay off old debts. I’m all for New Year’s resolutions. But do I keep these resolutions? And what about you? Do you keep your resolutions?
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 28 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
Fridtjof Nansen was a Norwegian explorer who led an expedition to the Arctic Ocean in a search for the North Pole. He took his ship in very deep water and, as part of his studies he would drop a sounding line to check the ocean’s depth. Since the line was too short to reach the bottom of the ocean, he would record the date, time, location, length of line, and a final note of “deeper than that”. He then lowered a longer line with the same result and notation, “deeper than that”. Another attempt, still “deeper than that”. Finally, after lowering his longest line, the logbook received the final notation of so and so length of line and “deeper than that”. I’d like to suggest to you that that’s the way God’s love is. No matter how we may try to measure it, his love is deeper than that. John tells us in I John 4:8 that “God is love”, but I feel rather overwhelmed and challenged by the task of trying to explain this incredible truth. The Christian writer, A.W. Tozer also struggled to explain God’s love as well. He once said, “I can no more do justice to this awesome and wonder-filled topic than a child can grasp a star. Still, by reaching toward the star the child may call attention to it and even indicate the direction one must look to see it. And so, I stretch my heart toward the high, shining love of God so that we may be encouraged to look up and have hope.” As difficult as it may be, may I encourage you in this coming year to seek to grasp a better understanding of the love of God. At its heart Christianity is about the opportunity to receive God’s love and to know this love personally. As we start 2017 may this be the time for you to experience this love, a new beginning, to experience the change you desire to see in your life. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be different because we can bring about change through the power of God’s love. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy, healthy and hopeful New Year. A year where you may give and receive love within your family, friends and your community and in the midst of this discover for yourself that amazing love that God has for you!

NEW YEAR – FRE I
was sat with my feet up on the sofa watching my 3rd movie of the evening on the Wednesday before Christmas. We’d taken a wander into the Chester Christmas markets the weekend prior and came home with a few decorations, one of which is sat flickering in the mantelpiece flickering, the others were still in the carrier bag on the dining room table. Only one of that night’s movies was festive. I promised myself at the beginning of the year as I packed away the Christmas of 2015 that I wouldn’t unpack it again in this place but here I was again avoiding dragging the tree out from under the bed in the spare room. Usually I love Christmas. I get all pumped up for evenings like that but the festive playlist rattling the new nightlight wasn’t my own. I’ve never needed to crank the TV up so loud before. The films I knew and loved were all re-edited with inappropriate soundtracks and splutters of overzealous laughter from beyond the wall. Unfortunately, this is common place. The volume control on their life seems to be set way above what is socially acceptable. These are neighbours that sort out their recycling in the street at 11.30pm on a Thursday night. In a street where even a cough reverberates along the terraces like a stray firework so the recycling ritual sounds as if they are dropping their bottles and jars into the allocated boxes from an upstairs window. I feel cheated of my wishes this year. I’ve blown out 40 candles

and wished on shooting stars for other’s health and happiness but in selfish wave induced by a Thursday night crescendo I vowed to now cash in a few for myself. I’m not one for making resolutions but I’ve already downloaded Zoopla and have regular email updates from Rightmove. Our ISAs are simmering away in anticipation and I intend to beg, steal and borrow all that I can to make sure that folding this tree back into its box really is the very last time we do it in this house. “Houses are so much cheaper the further you get away from Chester.” I’m told over and over again but I don’t want to stray too far away from the city. It’s my home. “I want to be able to walk home after a night out!” I respond and they look at me like I’m that weird guy that’s refusing to grow up.

That balding old man trying to make small talk with the girls in the queue outside Rosie’s. The one that you assume is having a midlife crisis. I don’t try and correct them. I actually mean visiting restaurants and maybe a few drinks in Harker’s on the way home rather than trying to be Peter Pan in Massoula. I’m fully accepting of my age. I’ve embraced it. Tired of Radio One I turned 40 a few months ago. It didn’t really affect me as such but suddenly my blood pressure was an issue, my middle age spread succumbed to gravity and the hair missing from my head for the past decade had suddenly resurfaced on my shoulders, nostrils and ears. The car we picked was for economy rather than style. I’ve started to keep antacid tablets in my sock drawer just in case we eat too late. I’m being forced to
Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
RESH START focus on my salt intake and drink cholesterol reducing drinks. I’m finding myself bored with Radio One presenter’s constant benign chatter and I’m fully embracing the miserable old man persona that I was one so desperate to avoid as I tune into Radio Four. I stood at the front door a few weeks ago, when a man dressed as Santa was towed up the street and found myself waving back at him as he threw a lollipop at my head. At first I thought the tinny distorted blare of ‘All I Want For Christmas’ was the neighbours coming home but this was too loud even for them and I found myself enraged, throwing open the door only to see the coloured lights a wonky bearded Santa making a slow approach up Faulkner Street. As I watched him crawl nearer I saw a few of the neighbour’s kids standing at their open front doors transfixed
by him. None were too keen to get too close but all waved as he threw treats out to them. I got totally swept up in the moment, the annoyance vanished and I began waving too. He turned and waved and then paused as he realised there were not kids hanging out of my front door and, possibly thinking I was poking fun at him, launched a treat a little too hard in my direction and I felt a sudden intense pain as a lollipop smashed into my left eye socket. The following morning I sat in the Doctor’s Surgery awaiting the results of an ECG, chasing a prescription and nursing a blackeye. “How can I help you?” The Doctor asked as I sat opposite her. Me: I’ve had a text from you asking me to come in to get the results of my ECG. Dr: “We don’t have the results.” Me: “Why am I here then?” Dr: “Because you made an appointment to see me. So, how can I help you today?” Me: … “I’ve got a 40-year-old man here…” She said when she called to chase the results and I physically turned to look for who she was talking about. It was a my second you’re getting old wake-up call on the run up to Christmas.
“You might want to but some of this on that bruise.” Said the pharmacist trying to flog me some ointment on top of my prescription. “I guess I’ve reached that age where I bruise a lot easier now.” I said but the pharmacist didn’t even raise an eyebrow. He simply rang the ointment through the till without me confirming the purchase. I counted out the exact change slowly onto the counter to make a point before taking the paper bag from him and coming home to where Hoole was being treated to some free mid-morning musical entertainment via next door’s shiny black Vauxhall Corsa. Just to ensure we weren’t missing the good bits they were turning them up extra loud for us which was very kind of them. Most of us had grown tired of the bird song and church bells anyway. So after taking advantage of the interval and running up to Gerrards for a sausage roll, I settled into the second half of the musical broadcast while firing up Zoopla. The headline that ran across the top of the app said “New year – fresh start” and I couldn’t have agreed more.

Don’t buy imported puppies by Emma Napier READERS are bound to have seen the recent TV and newspaper stories about the tens of cages of pedigree puppies who were trafficked illegally into the port of Holyhead from Ireland. They were discovered in tiny, filthy cages with no food or water and secreted behind bales of hay in a lorry. This places a spotlight on the corrupt industry that is behind many of the pedigree puppies and kittens that are sold to unsuspecting consumers. Many pedigree animals are produced by gangs whose only interest is making money out of them. The mothers of these puppies and kittens usually have no rest between litters, never see life outside their cage, or with a normal family, and are just treated as breeding machines in order to line the pockets of greedy individuals. The resulting animals are the yorkshire terriers, beagles, bassett hounds, ‘labradoodles’ or other attractive mixed breeds that are currently fashionable and are bought by those who want an aesthetically pleasing pet. This is despite the common knowledge that there are not enough homes in the UK for all the unwanted animals currently already out there. I am writing to plead with people not to buy pedigree pets but to look instead to one of the many rescue centres that are overflowing with loving dogs and cats who are looking for a stable home. There are many reputable rescue centres in our area, such as branches of the Cats Protection (South Wirral and Wrexham): http://wrexham.cats.org.uk/ and http://www.southwirral.cats.org.uk/ or North Clwyd Animal Rescue: http://ncar.org.uk/ or Garston Animal Rescue: http://garstonanimalrescue.com/ If you are looking to adopt a pet you could do no better than approach one of these. These centres are all also grateful for any donations that you could send- especially during these harsh winter months. My own one-eyed cat, Popeye, came from Garston Animal Rescue (pictured) and never a day goes by without me thanking my lucky stars that our paths have crossed. His disability simply makes him more of an individual. Please consider the plight of rescue animals and don’t fund the luxury lifestyle of people who only want to make more money and couldn’t care less about animals. Emma Napier, Chester BEX

Do you need to file a
Tax Return?
Filling in your Self Assessment could be the most stressful thing on your mind at this time of year. Have a read of our suggested approach to your Self Assessment tax return: Are you: l A Company Director? l Self Employed? l Receive income from abroad? l Have untaxed income, for example, interest or rental income? If the answer is yes, then you need to consider completing a return and ensure you consider the following: 1. Are you registered for Self Assessment with HMRC? 2. Do you know your Unique Tax Reference (UTR)? 3. Have you got all the information on your income for the 2015/16 tax year? You will need to collate paperwork such as: Business income and expenses Interest Statements Dividend Vouchers Pension Payment Statement 4. Complete your return. 5. And finally don’t forget to file by 31 January 2017. Filing late will bring you an instant £100 penalty but filing now can mean getting your refund earlier if one is due! You should leave plenty of time to get any help that you might need if you get into difficulties.
It’s a good idea to have an accountant take a look at the return for you. Accountants can get very busy in the run up to the Self Assessment time, so asking early will guarantee that they can allocate time to look at yours.
Foremans offer FREE Self Assessment fee quotes. If you would like to discuss your Self Assessment and get some free advice just call us on 01244 625 500 or email charlotte@foremansllp.com.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
Evergreen January MID WINTER can bring icy cold or drab wet days so you will want something cheerful to look at. Yellow and red are cheerful colours in an evergreen shrub. Yellow foliage and scented white flowers in spring can be provided by Choisya ternata Sundance. This is sometimes known as Mexican Orange Blossom. Grow in a sunny sheltered spot, good for a space by a fence or wall but not in an open windswept position. It forms a rounded shape to about 1.5m tall and can be cut back in early spring to keep it to shape. Red foliage can be provided by Photinia Red Robin with glossy leathery leaves and bright red shoots. Best kept trimmed to size in a relatively sheltered space. As a contrast try a Euphorbia characias subsp. Wulfenii – a bit of a mouthful of a name. As you can see from the photo this is a perennial with grey green foliage. It has lime green bottle brush bracts in spring that look very dramatic. Also likes a slightly sheltered position, well drained soil and when happy, will set seed. Just watch for the milky white sap which can cause skin irritation. I also love the ground cover plants that quietly do their bit and are never showy. Bergenias come in many sizes but the smaller ones such as Baby Doll have lovely rich green rounded leaves and stems of pink bell like flowers in spring. Growing to about 30cms tall they make a good edging plant for any relatively moist soil in sun or shade, sheltered or exposed. A contrasting front of border plant would be Euonymus Emerald Gaiety with its cream and green leaves which can be trimmed to make a neat plant about 45cms tall. Not much to do in the garden in January but you can get out and prune apple and pear trees. Established trees should not need much pruning. Any branches that are rubbing, growing inwards or diseased should be cut out. Cut out the top third of the main leaders or side branches to encourage blossom on side shoots. Cut back deciduous hedging such as Beech, Hawthorn and the very spiny Pyracantha. The latter has 2cm long needle sharp spines that are as strong as nails and will go through leather gloves so be careful and wear gloves.
