Parking problems get an airing Hoole residents have shared their views on proposals to improve reported parking problems around the centre of the area. The council was asked by local residents and businesses to look at parking issues in the centre of Hoole, with particular concern being placed on the lack of available parking spaces in the Bishop Street Car Park and vehicles which park on double yellow lines on Faulkner Street and Charles Street, blocking the pavement. A meeting took place last month at All Saints Church, Vicarage Road, Hoole,, where a number of proposals were discussed: l A restriction on stay in the Bishop Street Car Park to three hours maximum between 9am and 5pm l A prohibition of loading on both sides of Faulkner Street from its junction with Hoole Road for 15 metres in a southerly direction l A prohibition of loading on the West side of Faulkner Street for the remaining length to the junction with Walker Street between the hours of 10.30am and 16.30pm l A prohibition of loading on the South side of Charles Street from its junction with Faulkner Street to its junction with Westminster Road between the hours of 10.30am and 4.30pm l A review of the length of time in the limited waiting bays on Charles Street and Faulkner Street. VOLUME OF TRAFFIC Local members for Hoole, Cllrs Bob Thompson and Alex Black, created a task group comprising local residents and community organisations last year to address traffic and transport issues in the

area. Cllr Black said: “Hoole residents on the whole think that this is a great place to live, but the responses we’ve received so far are all concerned with the increasing volume of traffic and parking issues. “These are initial proposals and we would like to hear the views of residents and businesses before taking them further. Both Councillor Thompson and myself would really like to see as many local people coming along to this meeting to allow us to explore these ideas in more detail.” UNTENABLE Cllr Bob Thompson said: “We would encourage all local residents who would like their voices heard to come along and take part in trying to alleviate the traffic concerns that I know many of us feel are untenable. “We are keen to involve residents in working with us to identify local solutions to local problems - we won’t be able to reduce the volume of traffic coming into Hoole but we can look at ways of managing it more effectively.”

Safety concerns cause footbridge closure The railway footbridge at the end of Westminster Road and Lightfoot Street has been closed for safety reasons The 200ft long footbridge built in 1961 is owned by Cheshire West and Chester Council and has recently undergone a detailed inspection and structural check by engineers. They found that the bridge is substandard and needs to be closed as a safety precaution. In the shorter term the road bridge which runs alongside will be closed to traffic to Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments allow pedestrians and cyclists to use it safely. A diversion route will be in place for vehicles. Engineers from Cheshire West and Chester Council will be working closely with Network Rail to find a longer term solution. The duration of the closure is not yet known.

Open days are a resounding success! Recently established estate agents Somerville’s bring a modern approach to the chester property market with their ‘open days’ and ‘easy evenings’. Having only opened in February 2014, Somerville’s Estate Agents have already started to transform the Chester property market with their fresh and modern marketing approach to selling and buying homes. Many people have already been impressed with the level of customer service provided by Somerville’s and their open day and evening viewing events have proved popular with both buyers and sellers. Richard Wheeler, Director of Somerville’s says: “Our open house events have been a resounding success as they work for everyone. For the seller it means that most of the viewings can be completed over a couple of hours and they can be reassured that their property has been fully market tested and the best price is achieved. Buyers have peace of mind that they won’t be ‘pipped to the post’ by an earlier offer.” We had a number of offers “The open house idea really worked for us,” Mrs Evans, from Hoole, said. “With a young family it was important for us to be able to sell our house with the least disruption possible. “We were able to get the house ready once and then go out for the day, leaving things in the capable hands of Somerville’s. By the time we got back we had a number of offers. It was as simple as that!” Miss Parry, from Chester, added: “I work full time so viewing houses can be difficult. The open evening meant that we could arrange the viewing in the knowledge that it wouldn’t be sold before we got a chance to see it. “Somerville’s friendly staff were on hand during the appointment to answer any questions we had. Perfect!”

InherItance tax – THe IMpACT FoR you 20 Tel 01244 350398

www.hooleroundabout.com

InherItance tax can cost loved ones hundreds of thousands in the event of your death, yet it’s possible to mitigate a large proportion of it, or possibly pay none at all. the most important thing to do is examine whether you’ll pay and what to do about it. With a general election looming, there have already been mutterings from the Conservatives around their plans to increase the Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold to £1m. It is a matter of opinion whether you feel pledges like these will be kept or whether they are empty promises designed to win your vote. Having said that, we can only plan for around current legislation and presently the Inheritance Tax nil rate

band remains at £325,000 and will stay at this level until at least April 2018. More and more people are affected by IHT every year. It used to be a tax that was the preserve of the very wealthy, but escalating property values in the past ten years have put paid to that. In 2011/12 Inheritance tax raised £2.9 billion and receipts for 2013/14 are forecast to be £3.3 billion. (HMRC, March 2013) For single people, Inheritance Tax applies at the top rate of 40% to assets worth more than £325,000. This threshold is known as the nil rate band. For married couples and civil partnerships the threshold is £650,000. But the higher £650,000 limit only applies when assets are passed between spouses and civil partners and this figure reduces if any money is passed on to any of your beneficiaries during your lifetime. There are also other financial implications to consider,

Finance with Jonathan Seddon particularly if you are a widow, widower or divorcee. It is clear that recent changes and empty promises have left many people confused about IHT policy and many people may mistakenly feel they are unaffected by it. There are myriad ways to tackle Inheritance Tax and in most cases there are steps you can take to mitigate the liability that will ultimately be left for your loved ones. The correct course of action will be personal to the individual’s circumstances, but everyone’s first step should be a robust Will.* A will is vital to help

mitigate IHT and it can save your beneficiaries undue stress at an already difficult time If you are uncertain about how you stand regarding Inheritance Tax and would like to know more about what you could do to avoid it, call us today for a no obligation review. Adrenaline Trio head nort A group of friends from Hoole called the ‘Adrenaline Trio’ took on their third cycling challenge – cycling from Edinburgh to Newcastle in aid of Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity. The friends Ken Davies, Nellie Maan, Aleks Okuniewska and Mand Lancaster started cycling back in 2011 when they decided to try out the many cycling routes in and around Chester and Cheshire. In 2012, they cycled the famous coast to coast in aid of CRY – a charity that works to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to young sudden cardiac death

and sudden death syndrome. Last year they pedalled from Chester to Cardiff for MacMillan cancer support. This year the ride started at the foot of Arthurs seat in Edinburgh and finished at the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle – perhaps best associated with the start of the famous Great North Run – the world’s biggest half marathon. The week before, the weather was horrendous with heavy rains and winds. However, as the day approached low pressure gave way to high pressure and wall to wall sunshine prevailed for the duration. Along the

Hoole Roundabout July 2014

rth in cycling challenge way, to add to the fun, member’s secretly added extra load to fellow rider’s pannier bags – The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is missing a few Holy rocks. Aleks, the newest and fourth member of the group, said: “I opened my pannier bag, and found a rock. Typically, everyone said it wasn’t me. I liked the rock so much I decided to keep it and cycled with it until the end of the day. The following morning, I snuck it into Nellie’s bag.” Mand added: “I checked my panniers every morning just in case someone added some unwanted weight. It would probably have been impossible to add anything else to my bulging bags – I always seem to have more stuff than anyone else.” SPONSORSHIP The group successfully completed the challenge without getting lost thanks to Ken’s navigational skills and just before the weather changed and the heavens opened once more. Nellie said: “It was nice to finish at the Tyne Bridge, having run across it a few times during the Great North Run.” Nellie added: “We are not top cyclists and we don’t possess road bikes either. In fact, our bikes are so old we don’t need to worry about anyone stealing them – if you saw them you would laugh. We simply enjoy cycling and like taking on hilly and off road challenges in aid of charity. Over the last three years we have raised over £2,500 and would like to thank everyone who supported our challenges. People can still donate to Shelter.” Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness and campaigns to prevent it in the first place. People can still donate – just go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ AdrenalineQuatro To follow the full story of the challenge and see more photos go to https://twitter.com/ adrenalinebrush Pictures show Ken Davies, Nellie Maan, Aleks Okuniewska and Mand Lancaster

The charm of Nottin T here is a tiny cotton bag hung from one of the handles on the chest of drawers alongside my bed. Inside are my ‘trouble people’, or what some call ‘worry dolls (muñecas quitapenas)’.

They are tiny, colourful totems from Guatemala, each no bigger than the nail on my little finger. I’m not entirely sure how I came about them, or how they came to find me but I have had them for over 15 years. The theory behind these impeccably detailed miniatures suggests that if a person cannot sleep at night due to worry, they should confide their troubles to a doll picked at random from the bag and then placed under their pillow before going to sleep. The doll is thought to carry away the worry and thereby permitting the person to sleep peacefully. The last time I actually tried this I was 23 and the doll did indeed take away my worry but vanished in the process. I searched everywhere but the poor little bloke just upped and left. I keep the remaining dolls in the bag untouched and unopened and always close to my bed, too scared to tell them anything more. They’ve been through enough already. PLACEBO

I’m not overly superstitious but these little guys seem to ground me. Troubles seem so much greater at night but a quick glance reminds me that if these little guys can handle the anxieties of a 6’6” balding bearded bloke, then I need to man up, take stock and get some sleep. Nothing is ever as bad as it seems the following day.

We sat in the Artichoke by the canal and I told my friends of the AWOL doll and amid the ‘...you played with dolls?’ and the ‘...I can smell a placebo’

we did agree that there are forces at play that we would never fully understand. While I like to think that we do create our own destiny, there is sense of the supernatural that pricks the hairs on the back of my neck when my friends begin to talk about fate, coincidence and the unexplained.

While we sat back and enjoyed our Sunday roast, I couldn’t help but find the humour in the self proclaimed atheist with the booming voice sat on the next table interrupting his take on the world religions to answer his phone and introduce himself as ‘Christian.’ The Lord does indeed work in mysterious ways. I’m not one to purposely sit and listen in to

not Frankenstein!’ The father simply looked bemused while I stifled my amusement, waiting patiently to enter the Post Office. Einstein turned in his grave.

My other favourite was from a group of lads having a quick pint: ‘doing sports is 90 per cent confidence and 20 per cent talent’ - which reminded me of the advert the Co-Op ran on the last bank holiday ‘May Bank Holiday deals: Because this weekend’s a third longer.’ Good with food. Rubbish with Maths.

other peoples conversations but sometimes people forget their surroundings and their voices carry and it would be such a wasted opportunity if I didn’t grab my notebook and scribble down some of the transcripts. Frankenstein

Two favourites this week were the young couple struggling to get their daughter out of the doorway of the Post Office in Faulkner Street. The child, barely toddling, had stopped to adjust the buckle on her shoe as her father was holding the door open for her. ‘Come on.’ He urged, only for the mother to snap back in defence of her daughter ‘Wait. It’s a buckle. It’s difficult for a two year old. She’s

We have a wealth of inspiration here within are terraced streets. Characters from all walks of life add to the charm of (Notting) Hoole. I kick myself for the way I complained that the pace of life was alien to me when I first moved here. I was hell bent on rushing about and didn’t realise I was missing these gems. The mix of ages enjoying a break in the weather on a Saturday afternoon, popping into the cafe for a late breakfast, flip flop wearers strolling out of erj and juggling their car keys, the young couples dreaming about their first home as they finger the window of O’Brien Wheeler, the donators dropping bags of clothing into the Hospice Shop and the lunchers sat laughing at the tables in the Faulkner. I missed a lot of this the first year I was here but now I’ve settled into my surroundings and enjoy the fact that the community feel stretches to our visitors - even those from Essex.

We truly are a diverse and accepting neighbourhood. Your accent, your job, the car you drive and the colour of your is never important. We are all equal - unless you are orange from that self tanning cream - then we don’t speak to you.

FOOTBALL v religion BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER It has been said that Football is the new religion. The ‘beautiful game’ certainly does generate a lot of passion and love it or loathe it you certainly can’t get way from it. How many pages of newspaper and magazine print have been taken up with the media interest in the lives of some of the modern day football superstars? The Sunday papers devote dozens of pages covering the events from the previous day plus every day of the week on Sky or now BT Sport you can watch a live match. Here in Chester we have read with interest the fall and rise of Chester City FC and their recent reprieve to stay in the Conference! Certainly football as a sport has developed over the last 10 years with attendances increasing across the Premier and Championship Leagues by 31% with television audiences growing to just under 25 million viewers per season!

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

As I write this it seems as though we have wall to wall coverage of football as the world Cup takes place in Brazil, the question will England do well in 2014 preoccupies many, although by the time you read this the answer will be academic as either England will be out or they’ve progressed as far as the semi finals!! Certainly the pubs in and around Hoole are all geared up and focused on the World Cup with many of them showing all the games live! So how do football and Christianity compare? An interesting statistic I read recently was that there are still more people in church on a Sunday then in all the football stadiums across England, when you reflect on football matches certainly there are some similarities to Christian worship: • Where do large crowds gather to sing and chant? Churches and football grounds. • Where do large crowds raise their hands in the air in exultation? Churches and football grounds. • Where do people gather to express their collective aspirations, their feelings, their emotions? Churches and football grounds. Now of course the resemblance is only superficial. Bread and wine is not the same as pies and Bovril. The adulation of our football heroes falls short of worship but only just. All our footballers can do is play football to the limit of their ability. They give us delight when they show their skills, and satisfaction when they win on our behalf. So does this make football a new religion – it’s certainly true there are some familiar characteristics with going to a football match and attending church. Where else would you find groups of adults singing and gathering together to worship? Where can you belong to a crowd of people who are all following the same thing? We are making the players into idols, and the ‘professional game’ some would say is in crisis. The amount of money invested in the top clubs is immoral and can sometimes make the players and managers seem “god like” in their adoration and following. So I would suggest for some it is! Don’t get me wrong I love football but it is not the No 1 thing in my life; there is only person who is really worth following and worshipping, he is Jesus Christ.
