THE Natwest Bank, on Faulkner Street, is such a busy branch. So it was surprising when it was announced that it will close down in September which means that customers will have to go into town to the their banking from now on. It seems such a shame. In this issue we’ve also got news of the Raunchy for Rachel calendar, a ceremonial honour for Alex Black, the history of Westminster Road, a crime update with PCSO Keith Bartlett, Backyard with Andy Medcraft and Thought for the Month with the Rev Andy Glover. We hope you enjoy the magazine and don’t forget to say you saw the advert in Hoole Roundabout.

Natwest bank to close in September A PETITION has been started in an attempt to save Natwest Bank in Hoole. The bank has confirmed that its branch on Faulkner Street will close in September 2015. The busy branch on the corner of Hoole Road is very popular with people from Hoole and across Chester who don’t want the inconvenience of driving into the city centre. The bank has blamed changes in the way that people use banking services – the increased use of mobile banking, online banking and cash machines. Staff at the branch are being redeployed and there will be no redundancies. For people in Hoole it is a big loss, particularly as the nearest branch is in the city centre with all its parking problems. This will leave the area with just the two banks: Barclays and Lloyds. HSBC closed its branch on Faulkner Street, opposite Nat West, last year. Newly elected Chester MP Chris Matheson, who lives in Hoole, is gathering signatures for a petition to ask the bank to reconsider. The petition says: ‘We the undersigned respectfully request that Mr R. McEwan, Chief Executive Officer of the NatWest Bank reconsiders the proposed closure of it’s branch in Hoole, Chester. We believe that Hoole is a distinct local community with a character of its own and that the NatWest Bank adds to the attractiveness of Hoole as a shopping destination for people from local neighbourhoods and much further afield. The Hoole branch is convenient for local businesses and local residents and we wish for it to remain open as it is widely recognised as a valuable asset in the community.’ Visit http://www.chrismatheson.co.uk/natwest?recruiter_id=5 to fill in the online petition.

Your Skin Salvation has just landed in Chester! Hoole Roundabout July 2015

Struggling with eczema or allergy prone skin? Purepotions Skincare may have just brought the perfect solution to your area by launching their entire range of natural skincare products in the amazing new Holland & Barrett More superstore in Chester. natalie Balmond created Purepotions over 10 years ago when her young daughter was admitted to great Ormond Street Hospital with chronic headto-toe eczema that no doctor, dermatologist or alternative therapist seemed to be able to make any difference to. Poor little lula looked like a burns victim and could not lead a normal life due to her terrible skin condition. After some time, natalie discovered

13

that, like so many other sore skin sufferers, lula was allergic to many of the chemicals in the creams and lotions she was being offered, which was causing her skin to flare-up, crack and bleed. Armed with this information, natalie took matters into her own hands and created a 100% natural beeswax based ointment in her own kitchen that transformed their lives over a matter of days and soon after, the lives of thousands of others. natalie used only ingredients that had been traditionally used to soothe and heal sore skin like calendula, chickweed, nettle and chamomile, together with nutrient rich oils such as hemp and olive, to create a wonder balm that has remained the exact same formulation 10 years on. this life changing range of products is now available on your doorstep in the brand new “Holland & Barrett More” superstore on Foregate Street, Chester. Pop into store for more information or to try Purepotions.

“97% of Purepotions customers said they would recommend Skin Salvation to others” (*313 people asked)

crime update with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

Beware opportunist thieves OPPORTUNIST thieves are targeting unlocked cars and homes in Hoole and Newton. PCSO Keith Bartlett is advising people to keep their cars locked at all times, even if they are just popping into the shops. He said: “We’ve had a large number of these sorts of thefts where thieves are just trying their luck with a lot of cars and hoping they strike lucky. “They’re not interested in stealing the cars or even smashing their way in, it’s just pure opportunism. My advice is not to leave any valuables on show or even in the car.” The PCSO said that thieves are trying the same approach with houses, just trying doors and windows to see if they can gain entry. He added that a man has recently been jailed for carrying out these offences in Hoole and Newton. If you have any information on these incidents please call the police non-emergency number 101 and leave a message for him.

There’s a new sheriff in town The new Sheriff of Chester is Hoole councillor Alex Black. Cllr Black, who lives in Hoole Lane, was appointed to the ceremonial role at a ceremony at the Town Hall in late May. A well-known face around Hoole, the Labour man served on Chester City Council from 2001 and later on Cheshire West and Chester Council. A former police, he started in Wallasey in 1962 before transferring to Chester in 1968 where he remained until 1981 as a member of CID. He was promoted to sergeant and worked in Winsford until being transferred to Ellesmere Port in 1983 where he remained until his retirement in 1992. Following that he worked for a catering equipment company before moving to Cheshire County Council’s Transport Department as a bus driver and retired in 2002. Married to Janet for 52 years the couple have two children Richard and Angela and twin grandsons Alex and Charlie aged nine. Cllr Black, who was re-elected as a Hoole councillor in May, said: “As Sheriff I want to meet as many young people as I can to explain democracy and civic life, with the aim that they will be interested in them when they become of voting age. “I also want to welcome people from other countries moving into Chester, to help them settle in and become Cestrians, able to contribute to our society. These meetings could take place at their workplaces, schools and places of worship.”

T

he sniff of a BBQ takes me back to my childhood. The break between the school years gave me a six week window into the outside world. As long as I was up and dressed before my mum left for work and I’d rattle through the post-it of chores stuck to the kitchen worktop, my universe consisted simply of lego, lemonade, lightning bugs and the Lost Boys. With the parents away we owned week days and it was only the smell of a BBQ on a weekend that signified a parental presence. Nobody claimed a weekend. It was a no-mans land rich with sports clubs, shopping, family gatherings and haircuts. Eating alfresco was now an added fixture to summer. My dad dedicated a space in the garden to a brick build BBQ and paved an area for a picnic table. It was a shrine to all things charred. Back then it was idyllic.

I’m quite partial to throwing some Halloumi alongside the bangers whereas others turn their noses up at the rubbery cheese. We all have our personal tastes. Onions and ketchup? Brown or red? Relish of mustard? French or American? The world would be a dull place if we all favoured the same things but some of the smells that emit from neighbouring yards make me wonder if what’s being cooked is actually fit for human consumption and, if so, did they know to remove the plastic wrap before throwing it on the grill? Pot Noodle

Today’s waft was warmly welcomed. After an Olympicworthy washing retrieval run, a stubbed toe and some blue air hanging about the door jam, I left the kitchen window open so I could passively gatecrash the neighbouring party. Their music, laughter and the mouthwatering aroma made my Pot Noodle more appealing and had me reaching for beer and heading out in the yard.

Now the smell of a BBQ in these terraces of Notting Hoole signify either a mad dash to drag in the washing or the lingering leftover stench of A party for one doesn’t have nextdoor’s mid-afternoon to be as desperate as it sounds burger-fest clinging to my when you have neighbours favourite tee. 22 Tel 01244 350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

like mine. The trick is not to get too involved though. Just sit back, close your eyes, let the sun warm your face and imagine you’re invited. The wall between you just dissolves away. A few rules to consider: Do not, under any circumstances, laugh out loud to any of the jokes, no matter how funny they are and never add your own opinion to any topic of conversation you may be now privy to now that you are tanked up on the other side of their fence. Oh, and never ever accept the offer of a top up!

The whole BBQ thing has become a British tradition. Even the Post Office shop is cashing in on it. You pop in for stamps and come out with a set of luminous melamine plates. The basic hamper is still a thing of beauty and cool bags with retro patterns slung over shoulders are a clear indication that this is not just a snack this is a feast. Throw in some tongs and bag of charcoal and its automatically a party. My American friends use the BBQ as a part of much bigger celebrations. It’s dragged out for sporting events, Independence Day, street

parties and patriotic milestones. We Brits haul them out of the shed as soon as the May bank holiday has arrived. There’s no need for celebration. A simple patch of blue in the break of the clouds can see a whole army of men scrabbling about with fire lighters. BEIBER

My neighbour’s music has slipped a bit. Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious” has made way for Justin Beiber. It’s that awkward moment when you hit ‘play all’ on your itunes and after few tracks of soft jazz setting the mood for some sophisticated

drinking, the conversation is brutally assaulted by the thrashing and wailing of the Frozen soundtrack that you “downloaded for the kids!” But “Let it go” you can’t, and you’re suddenly hunched up over your ipod trying to skip to the classy stuff while your guests titter politely. A few hours later and this will be back on as the empties suddenly become microphones and your standing on the bench bellowing out Disney classics. She’s saved it. A quick fiddle and Paloma Faith has rocked up to the party. There’s a few whoops and somebody is joining in with chorus a little

too enthusiastically. The wine must be good because it’s only 6pm and then there’s a shift. The music stops. Mr excited is probably being asked to calm down. Or ejected. “Think of the neighbours!” the host is probably reprimanding. And then it dawns on me. That overzealous vocal was mine. I hear a snigger. I’ve outstayed my welcome in my own backyard. I carefully place the Pot Noodle next to the bench and crawl back into the house on my hands and knees in a poor attempt at commando style. I crush a snail with my knee. I think it’s time to emigrate!

Make a date to get raunchy! THERE was a great turnout at The Piper pub for the Raunchy for Rachel calendar launch. The calendar has lots of hunky men from Hoole, including builders from Hartley & Parry Developments, Ben from The Suburbs and the lads at Dee Rangers football club. Many of the models were at the launch but chose to retain their modesty underneath many of the specially printed T-shirts. Pam Le Ballois, Sue Mason, Jo Street and photographers Sally Peacock and David Landells have got together to produce the calendar with the help of numerous male models. Pam’s idea was to produce the calendar for her friend Rachel Stretch who is terminally ill with a brain tumour. Rachel has chosen the Brains Trust as the charity to benefit from sales of the calendar which can be bought from the likes of erj, Oliver George and Telford’s. Rachel has a Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade 4 brain tumour which is terminal. If you would like further information please visit Brainstrust website www.brainstrust.org.uk/. Below: some of the models with Rachel, and, right, the organisers and photographers Sue Mason, Sally Peacock, Jo Street and Pam Le Ballois with Rachel.

Gymnastic dreams come true Beth Tweddle Britain’s greatest ever-female gymnast, visited St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s Primary school, inspiring many of the children with her amazing gymnastic talents. The pupils were astounded at Beth’s impressive achievements include being an Olympic Bronze Medalist, a triple World Champion, a six-time European Champion, a Commonwealth Champion and seven-times consecutive National Champion. Along with her unrivalled success Beth told them about how she had competed at three Olympic Games; Athens 2004, Beijing 2008and London 2012 - where she won Bronze in the Uneven Bars. Since starting out at the age of seven, Beth has helped to reinvent British gymnastics and her achievements place her in the ‘greatest of all time’ category within her sport. Eleven-year-old Aoife Higgins, one of the school’s year 6 pupils, was so delighted to meet her idol Beth. Aoife has very recently competed in and won gold for her floor routine at grade 6 level in the mixed pairs at the British Championships Final which took place in Stoke Fenton Manor. Aoife said: “It was amazing to meet Beth and learn so much about her amazing career. She has inspired me to follow my dreams and try and be a world champion myself.” Beth has opened up her own Gymnastic classes called ‘Beth Tweddle Gym’ at The Queen’s School and Northgate Arena which provides lots of opportunities for all children to develop their own gymnastic skills.

Hoole History Corner

Ralph Earlam, Chairman of the Hoole History and Heritage Society, explores the

North from Charles Street Although Westminster Road was one of the earliest streets in Hoole it was not a through road until the 1880’s. Before that date the first 100 yards or so from Hoole Road were the gated access (the pillars remain today) to serve the rear of Egerton Terrace and Swinfen Villas. These two were a part of Moor Park whose boundary wall made the street north from Charles Street into a cul de sac.

In those 100 yards, on the eastern side Williams Terrace (now nos. 4-10) was built, to be joined in 1894 by the new Hoole Urban District Council’s Offices, a house (no. 2) for the Sanitary Inspector, and the base for the Hoole Volunteer Fire Service. It is just possible to decipher Hoole Urban District Council on the front of HiQ today. On the western side the gardens to Egerton Terrace were sold in 1884 to build a row of

houses (nos. 1-11), and the area south of there was later to become the first garage with petrol pump in Hoole (G.F. Brammall) and later Bill Smith’s Motorcycles. Next door on the corner of Bishops Street was a Welsh Wesleyan Chapel. If you look carefully through the metal gate to the right of Lewis’s Ice Cream (next to No 11) you can still see bricks and slates from the chapel.

At the head of the cul de sac on the eastern side, a National School was built in 1855. This later became the Mission Room and was used by All Saints Church for activities, an instrument store and practice room for the Boys Brigade Band. It is now an integral part of Lewis’s Ice Cream business.

That shop first appears in an 1857 Directory and 1861 Census as a grocer’s and baker’s run by Thomas Balshaw who became the landlord at the Bromfield Arms. After his death in 1874, his

son Richard ran the business and opened Hoole’s first Post Office there. It was occupied pre 1902 by Jones & Davies and then solely by Thomas Jones who continued on his own as a baker and grocer. There are pictures of the shop and also separately of their horse drawn cart daily deliveries of bread continuing from their later premises at 3 Charles Street ( now Chatwins) until the 1950’s). Lewis’s was established in Warrington in 1888 but did not come to Hoole until after 1906.

Westminster Road was originally called Peploe Street after the Peploe-Wards who married into the Hamilton family. In 1865 the Marquis, later

to be the Duke, of Westminster, built the School for Girls & Infants lower down the Street and enlarged it in 1895; in recognition the Street was re-named Westminster Road. Part two next month

THE HERO INSIDE BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER A few years ago the American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top 50 heroes and top 50 villains of all time. Deeply principled and idealistic attorney Atticus Finch (portrayed by Gregory Peck, from to Kill a Mockingbird), was chosen as the greatest hero in 100 years of film history, while the greatest villain was revealed as the brilliant, cunning and psychotic Dr. Hannibal Lecter (portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal). Others in the top 10 heroes were Indiana Jones, James Bond, Rick Blaine, Will Kane, joining Hannibal in the top 10 villains were Norman Bates, Darth Vader, the Wicked Witch of the West.

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

One daydream that almost all of us have had is to be a hero. The heroes of our daydreams vary; often, as we grow, so do our ideas of heroes develop and become more sophisticated. Tellingly, early heroworship is often called ‘looking up to someone,’ and, obviously, as children, we literally look up to those tall people, our parents, who are probably our first heroes. However, once we really begin to consider heroes, one particular difficulty seems to arise again and again. That problem is identifying a hero. So how do we determine who a hero is, or how someone comes to be a hero.

Some people say that heroes are born and not made, that heroism is a matter of fate, but if heroes are made, who - or what - “makes” them? Heroes in the movies can be called upon to illustrate both sides of this question. In one sense, heroes seemed to be determined, that is ‘made,’ by a common understanding. Most people simply agreed that heroes were literally ‘extraordinary,’ and performed astonishing deeds, far beyond the capabilities of the average person. One quality that quickly arises in a discussion of heroes is courage. At the moment this is clearly highlighted in the campaign “Help our Heroes” As their website states; “It’s about the ‘blokes’, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It’s about Ben, it’s about Steven and Andy and Mark, it’s about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes.” In the last 10/15 years we find a maker of heroes that ignores, engulf s or surpasses all previous creators of heroes. That influence is, simply, ‘the media.’ It is true that without the media, which may discover and certainly announce people of valour and honour to us, we might never get to know of the heroes amongst us. More sinisterly though, the media can be superficial and capricious. The past itself changes under our eyes; people who are “nobodies” one moment are apparently “heroes” the next and then these same people are gone again! Are the media identifying something else for us - not the hero but the celebrity - someone who has attained the “fifteen minutes of fame” that Andy Warhol claimed we were all due? If heroes are made and not born, who or what makes them? But if they are born and not made, how shall we know them? It was Heather Small who sang, “Search for the Hero inside yourself, until you find the key to your life” Is it possible to find that hero by just looking inside, I wonder if in fact if this is just a part of the truth, for me my hero is someone marked by sacrifice, he once said, “no greater love has this than a person lay down his life for his friend, and then this is what he did”; This is person is Jesus! Although he a someone I look to imitate and follow, he is also someone who now lives in me and enables me to live a life that is marked with character, this I hope enables me to make the right choice, to do the right thing when I am called upon to do it at the right time, then maybe just maybe I can be a hero to some else!

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

Gardening by Janet Heath

High Summer in JulY July is a month when the classic English herbaceous border is seen at its best. The gardens mentioned below have lovely borders and will give you ideas of plants to grow in your own garden. I love the herbaceous borders filled with perennials that pop up year after year. Agapanthus with its large heads of deep blue or white flowers and green strap like leaves it is an architectural plant for a hot sunny border and grows best in well drained soil and moisture at the roots. Another good plant for a sunny site is Lychnis coronaria also known as Bridget–in–herbravery according to the RHS website. If you have a sandy well drained soil in baking sun then this will be an asset to any border. It has grey/silvery soft leaves with magenta pink or white flowers. It does not last long but it will seed happily.

Lavenders are also a lovely small shrub for a sunny border. If you want the classic lavender scent then go for English Lavender Lavendula angustifolia. With many different varieties of English Lavender to choose from (over 250 apparently) there will be one for a pot or a gravelly soil and baking hot sunny border. Compact varieties like Hidcote or Munstead are better for smaller areas. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as Lilac, Weigela, Cistus and Philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from Roses, Penstemons, Delphiniums, Centaurea, Nepeta and Lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer – always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well

watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping. l If you would like to visit gardens for ideas and a lovely afternoon tea, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. In Chester, on 4th and 5th July, 150 Barrell Well Hill gardens are open. On a series of terraces going down to the River Dee you can see perennials and shrubs for sun, a stream and bog garden. The Rowans at Threapwood near Malpas is open on 11th and 12th July has an Italianate theme. With formal and natural areas including ponds it is a fascinating garden to visit.
