Hoole History Corner
Linda Webb, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, explains the links between Ho Chas Sumner talked to Hoole History & Heritage Society about Chester Football Club’s early years. The club was formed in 1885 when Chester Rovers and Old King’s Scholars amalgamated at Faulkner Street, where Chester Rovers had played in 1884. House building caused a move to ‘the Old Showground’ in 1898, to land which had been used for the Royal Agricultural Show in 1893, but further house building in this part of Hoole resulted in Chester Football Club becoming homeless for two years after one season. The team played in Whipcord Lane, when it re-emerged. Eventually moving to the Sealand Road ground, its home until 1990. Over the years, Chester F.C. has drawn upon a loyal following from Hoole. ‘Making the grade’ as a footballer, and playing for ‘The Blues’ has been an ambition of many boys from Hoole as they kicked balls, cans, even stones, about with their friends.
uniforms, and the sale of ‘broken biscuits’ and bacon bones. However, he also remembers the eight double decker buses which lined up outside the Co-op to take Hoole football supporters to the match. As a newspaper boy at ‘Docca Dawson’s’, he remembers both Sid Dawson Junior and Senior. Anyone falling short was told to “Sling ya hook”. Fish and chips came from Jimmy Rileys, on the opposite side of Faulkner Street - Jimmy sported a dicky bow, and was well known for his banter at the counter. ‘Gossie’s’ (The Faulkner) and ‘The Brom’ (The Bromfield Arms) were the rival locals. Growing up, John joined the Boys Brigade, the band with its distinctive big bass drum and bugle and Ken Harris organising. John was a keen footballer, he played for the Boys Brigade Football Club (pictured below).
‘HOOLE BOYS’ WHO PLAYED FOR CHESTER F.C. IN THE PAST JOHN ‘BASHER’ EVANS In 2010, during the celebration of 125 Years of “The Blues”, one of ‘the City Legends’, Chester F.C. players invited to relive yesteryear, was John “Basher” Evans, from Hoole. Working his way up through the junior ranks of Chester Football, at the age of 18, in 1961, he became a part-time professional, and turned full time professional at 21. At this time, playing conditions, using heavy footballs, often on muddy or wet pitches, meant that strength was essential for success in the game. Always “Basher” to the crowd, possibly due to his robust playing style, John made 44 First Team appearances for Chester F.C. under four managers: John Harris, Stan Pearson, Bill Lambton, and Peter Hauser. John grew up at 33 William Street with his parents and sister, so he played out around William Street entry and Barrows entry. He went to Westminster Road Infant School, then to All Saints Juniors in School Street. School days took him past the Co-op in Walker Street, so John remembers the shop in 1950s, staff in white
Bible classes were on Sunday mornings at the Mission Room, Westminster Road, when John looked forward to visiting Lewis’s Ice-Cream Parlour for a ‘sixpence ha’ penny special’ (scoops of ice-cream in lemonade soda) afterwards. At All Saints’, aged 9, he played ‘two years up’ in the Under-11s, qualifying because he could kick with his left foot. He was given sixpence whenever the team won. Following reorganisation of schools in Hoole in 1954, John moved to Chester College School site to complete his education at All Saints. John played for Hoole Juniors representing them in the CASA

n Hoole and the city’s football club. League Select 11 Under-18s in Ireland in 1957. He played for All Saints Under-15s, again, two years up, as well as the College, and Chester School Boys (pictured below) , who played in the Semi-final of the School Boys’ League at Swansea in front of a crowd of 7,500.
Second career When John made his debut for Chester F.C. in 1961, the reporter for the Chester Chronicle described him as ‘the Hoole boy who works as an electrician when not playing football’ The fact that John became a qualified electrician and went on to have a very successful second career after leaving football with Chester F.C. was, John Evans believes, due to the thoughtfulness of John Harris, his first manager at the club. Employment was high and boys leaving school readily found work, but, in comparison with today’s earnings, those in football were then quite modest. John Harris thought it was important to get players into work, so he gave John Evans a letter of introduction for Mr. John Neild and his son David, of Thomas Wood and Co. The company needed a trainee electrician, and John was given a job. Another player from Hoole who signed up for Chester at the same time as John was Freddie Field. The contract they signed was to play for Chester Football Club Limited in the Football League and Cheshire County Football League. The rate of pay was £6 per week, with an additional £3 per week when playing for the First Team. A bonus was paid when the team won.
“Basher” made his debut for “The Blues” against Aldershot, in front of 2,775 spectators on Boxing Day 1961. He received lots of congratulations ahead of the match, but only one telegram, from former manager, Stan Pearson, wishing him ‘Good Luck’. The Chester Chronicle described Chester F.C. approaching the game “with zest”; John gave a good performance defending against Taylor “a clever winger”, but Aldershot won 3-2. John’s football career at Chester took off from then, however, and led to 44 First Team appearances, played at fullback. Unfortunately, in March 1964, when Chester F.C. was playing in the Fourth Division, pushing to get into the promotion top four in the League, during the game at Gillingham, John ‘took a hefty kick to the back as he charged between two players’. Substitutions were not permitted in those days, so John moved to the wing. The nature of his injury was not realised at the time. Twenty minutes later, he had to be taken off. A hospital x-ray found two fractured bones to the side of his spinal cord. He was ordered to stay in bed with a plank under his back. How far John might have gone as a professional footballer can never be known. This very serious injury put John out of football for the rest of the season. Recovery and treatment following it did bring John’s much-loved career in League Football to a close. So, John’s second career as an electrician opened up; it included three decades of involvement at the Grosvenor Estate. John has many letters expressing appreciation for his hard work dedication and commitment from members of the family and estate staff. He was also a guest at the Memorial Service for Gerald Grosvenor held at Chester Cathedral. Looking back over his working life, John describes it as ‘A Game of Two Halves’ l Part Two next month l This article is already available on HH&HS website hoolehistorysoc.btck.co.uk, where articles will be updated as new information comes to light.

Centennial open day at Hoole Allotments The 13-acre allotment site hidden away in Hoole is celebrating its centenary this year, a milestone in the history of Hoole and the allotments in the local community, writes David Moulton. The allotments are hidden away; they are certainly not easy to see, they don’t have an official address or post code, so easy to pass by without noticing. They are just off Canadian Avenue at the junction of Panton Road, nestled away behind the Coronation Recreation Grounds. You probably need to get the map out to find us! The allotments came in to existence as a result of the 1916 Cultivation of Lands Act. This led to Hoole Council acquiring more land for the cultivation of food and use as allotments. Small beginnings, but the allotments have grown since then, there now being just under 200 allotments on the site. 100 years in Hoole is worth celebrating, so we have planned to have a centennial open day on Sunday 16th July, gates opening at 10.30am with the Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Razia Daniels officially opening the event at 11am. There is a tea and cake stall, musical entertainment with a barber’s shop quartet, a local choir and other live music. Something to listen to while you have a drink at the bar, buy plants, have your face painted or learn to tie knots. The local history society will also be there along with the Cheshire Waste Reduction Volunteers, so you can learn more about the local area and become experts in composting! In addition there will be a trail around the allotment site and the opportunity to learn about bees.

Somerville’s Housing Market Forecast As we enter uncertain times on both political and economic fronts this Summer, many people are asking how this will affect the housing market. Richard Wheeler and Annie Somerville, of Somerville’s Estate Agents, were available for comment: “Well, we can’t speak for the rest of the country but the local market certainly seems to be holding firm and demand remains strong,” stated Richard Wheeler, director at Somerville’s Estate Agents. It’s quality that counts He went on to say: “It’s quality that counts in this marketplace, not quantity. Most buyers want the best they can get for their pound and that’s why it’s always the top 20% of properties that sell within any given price bracket. “Traditional strong family districts such as Upton, Newton and Vicars Cross remain
high on buyers wish lists and there is a huge demand for open plan living space, or the potential to create it.” Buoyant prices Annie also added: “In terms of growing and developing locations, Hoole is still seeing demand outstrip supply, keeping prices buoyant! “Newton is tipped as our next ‘up and coming’ district as we see many young families looking for homes to get them on the next rung of the property ladder but still wanting to stay close to all the schools, shops, Hoole and city centre.” Overall both Richard and Annie are very upbeat about the Summer property market but did say that they thought price increases would start to ease towards mid-autumn as the market enters a less active period.

School does its bit for Manchester victims A two-day international food and cake sale was organised by the Human Appeal charity at Hoole CE Primary School to raise funds for those affected by the terrorist attack in Manchester and to support the people of Syria, providing shelter, sanitation and food. Mrs Ahmed who organised the event said: “Allowing communities to integrate and to share faith with other communities has established how the school values and respects one another. This makes me feel proud for my children to attend this school. With Ramadan starting on Saturday it has been a great blessing to raise money and also involve our community.â€? The stall was extremely popular with parents and staff alike, selling out on both days in 30 minutes and raising ÂŁ453.08 for the charity.

Pupils pedal to better health Bren Bikes and Chester Police visited Hoole CE Primary School to support the launch of the school’s Sport and Healthy Schools Fortnight event. They held a bike maintenance workshop, showing the children how to fix and maintain their bikes safely and two local PCSOs carried out bike marking to the pupil bicycles to ensure that they could be returned to them if they were ever lost or stolen. Elaine Howe, Hoole Primary’s sports coordinator and Year 5 teacher, said “We held the sports fortnight to promote healthy lifestyles and the importance of exercise and healthy food choices. It definitely helped promote the use of bike and scooters for the commute to school rather than travelling by car.” Other events included a charity mile march by the reception children (EYFS) to raise money for the charity, Contact a Family.

Turning the Tide

The ebb and flow of many women’s careers makes the challenge of retirement saving even greater. In the last half-century, there have been significant improvements for working women. But according to the World Economic Forum, gender inequality remains stubbornly persistent. In the UK, women are adrift on a number of key measures. The UK was the ninth most gender-equal country in 2006, but by last year had slipped to 20th place (1). Equal pay is often seen as a key marker of social progress. In Europe, one of the world’s most equal continents, income inequality is still a major problem. The average gender pay gap within the European Union is around 16%, which means that, for every €1 a man in the EU earns, a woman will earn 84 cents (2). Women in the UK are still earning 18% less on average than men, across full- and part-time work (3). Likewise, the proportion of women saving adequately for retirement remains well below that of their male counterparts. Yet the pension gap has generally received less attention than the pay gap, even though it has equally serious consequences. Research by Aegon shows that women have barely a third the pension savings of men; their average pension pot holds just £24,900 – far below the £73,600 average for men (4). Furthermore, next year will see an increase in women’s State Pension age. The changes are being brought in earlier than originally planned, leaving many women born in the 1950s facing an extra five-year wait to receive their State Pension. As a result, hundreds of thousands of women may have to re-plan their retirements. We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

#PRAY4UK BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER The use of the #Pray4________ (fill in the appropriate city) is increasingly being used on twitter as unfortunately we are living in a “new norm” with increased acts of terrorism taking place in different cities across Europe. Not least over the past few weeks with the terrible events in Manchester and London, people again took to twitter to express anger, sorrow and prayer. I am aware too that this practice is very Andy Glover has lived in Euro-centric something re-enforced to me when recently I had the Hoole with his wife Sue privilege of attending an Open Doors event and met Pastor Edward for 29 years. Andy began Awabedah, he is Pastor of the Alliance Church in Damascus and at Hoole Baptist Church, leader of the Alliance Church network in Syria. Listening to the on Westminster Road, context that he serves God in, with the continued reality of war and as Youth Pastor, before civilian deaths; yet in the midst of this His and the faith of the church becoming the Pastor and in that country is still strong and active, this was truly humbling to see now Team Leader. and hear. Waking up this morning to the news that the results of the election have resulted in a “hung parliament” with no clear outcomes meaning continued uncertainly and lack of clarity for those seeking to lead the UK, only adds for me the imperative on the people of God in this country to re commit to regular and persistent prayer for the UK. We believe prayer really does change things so now is time time for faith to arise across our churches. As the words from 2 Chronicles 7 remind us: “if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and heal their land” Now you may be asking does prayer really work? As a church leader you would expect me to say yes would not you but did you know amongst the 1 in 3 people believe God will answer their prayers. Across the UK 20 million adults pray; 13 million pray at least once a month and 9 million every day. There are a number of problems that spring to mind when considering prayer…talking to someone that’s invisible…talking to someone who doesn’t talk back. How is it supposed to work? And what do I do when God doesn’t grant my wish to win the lottery? Did you know the bible contains many different kinds of prayer, a prayer of sadness, a prayer of adoration, prayer of the forsaken, prayers of examination, the book of Psalms is good place to begin as you’ll find all these prayer and much more. Maybe you have the wrong picture of prayer, it’s not about being polite, it’s not about using specific words and it’s not a passive act. May I suggest a new picture of prayer, one that is full of rich detail and vibrant colour that emerge from honest encounters with God. The point of all this is that it is possible to come to know God in a personal way and to live life the way he intended. In an amazing statement Jesus said what it is all about: a relationship with God: “This is eternal life that people may know you and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Maybe its time you should #trypraying. I have a helpful app on my phone called Try Praying – it’s a 7 day journey exploring prayer you might find it helpful . We are praying for you here at HBC Chester, the church I lead, drop us a line at hello@hbc.org.uk if we can pray specifically for you. 28 Tel 01244350398

Gio’s tips for staying safe online “How can I browse the web and also be safe online as I’m a little worried about my device getting a virus and am not sure what to do?” Going online with your device (or surfing the web as it is better known) is something most of us enjoy doing, be it to just browse some online stores, go on sites like eBay or Amazon and find a bargain, or stay in touch with family and friends via programs such as Skype. The Internet connects us with shops, friends and is also a wealth of information. Though this all sounds great, there are some people that are worried about ‘surfing the web’, especially lately with the news talking about certain computers being hit by a virus (or in this case, ransomware)
A few simple ideas to help you stay more secure and protected online are; 1. Install Antivirus and Firewall Software – (there are free ones out there) 2. Shop safely 3. Think before you click – If you receive an email and are not sure who it is from, don’t just open it. Either delete it or ask a friend or family for advice 4. Protect your information – If you are purchasing something and a website is asking for your card details, make sure it is safe before inputting these details. There are a few very simple steps for achieving this. 5. Keep your system up to date – (This includes your Operating System, Antivirus, Firewall, software etc.)
There is more to this list but this is just an introduction. It may seem a little daunting at first but believe it or not, this very quickly becomes second nature and before you know it, you will be doing most of the above without even giving it a second thought. Here at Hoole Community Centre, we have a team of I.T Buddies that can help you quickly get up to speed on surfing the internet safely. We can also check over your laptop to make sure that it is up to date and offer advice on the best course of action if required. If you would like some help or advice on anything within this article, please feel free to drop into Hoole Community Centre, our IT Buddies Team are on hand every Monday 2-4pm., Tuesday 10am-12noon and Thursday 1-3pm. For any further information, or to become an IT buddy volunteer, ring us on 01244 342741.

Busy month for the police POLICE have targeted speeding drivers along Plas Newton Lane. During the month they had the speed gun out and caught a number of motorists who have been reported for speeding offences. l High-viz patrols have been stepped up in Alexandra Park after concerns were raised about dogs being off their leads. The local dog warden is also keeping an eye on the area. l Patrols have also been stepped up on the Canalside in Great Boughton in an effort to disrupt drug activity. l A male has been arrested for a number of shoplifting offences in Kingsway, Hoole and Westminster Park. l The police have been made aware of a plain white refrigerated van going around the Great Boughton area where the occupants have been trying to sell fish door to door. Unfortunately, the men have sold fish to a vulnerable member of the community for £296 but the purchaser upon further inspection believes that the produce was worth around £50. It’s understood that the men are in their 30’s and were wearing plain white fishmonger jackets and they did not provide any paperwork relating to the sale.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
HIGH SUMMER IN JULY There are so many flowering plants out in July that I am spoilt for choice. One that you may not know is a shrub, Abutilon Kentish Belle. This is a tender shrub growing to about 2m tall and as you can see from the photo, has hanging red and yellow flowers loved by bees. So if you have a sheltered corner that gets sun in summer on well drained yet moist soil then try it out. It is hardier than other Abutilons and would do well on the Wirral where winter temperatures are lower. Another supposedly tender plant is Agapanthus with round heads of white or blue flowers. These are hardy in my clay based soil in full sun in Chester. You can grow them in pots and bring them in over winter. They do well with low growing perennials around the base. If you have dryer soil and sun then why not try Verbena bonariensis and Eryngium bourgatii or Sea Holly. The silvery blue stems of the Sea Holly look great with the taller stems of the Verbena and both are loved by insects. Surround with low growing geraniums or purple leaved Heucheras. Janet Heath Garden Mentor
Another tall perennial is Campanula lactiflora Alba with stems of white flowers up to 1.2m tall. Good for the back of the border in moist soil but not in a windy position. Plant autumn flowering bulbs such as Nerine bowdenii or Amaryillis belladonna in sunny sandy soil or in pots for autumn colour. If your geraniums have flowered, take the shears to them and cut back hard, some varieties will flower again. Prune plums and cherries after fruiting has finished, not in winter. Make sure you water vegetables like beans and courgettes for a good crop. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. The Rowans at Malpas is open on 1st and 2nd July. It has an Italianate theme and is divided into different areas from quiet pool to exuberant pots planted with annuals. Also open on 15th and 16th July is Sunnyside Farm, Little Budworth. Five acres of country garden with wildflower meadow, pool, herbaceous borders and woodland to enjoy.

Pioneering loyalty scheme to be extended to more venues
After a successful six-month trial involving 20 local retailers, the Love Hoole scheme is set to be extended to include more venues. Designed with community in mind the scheme encourages people to shop locally in Hoole to improve footfall and generate loyal customers by offering instant vouchers, which can be spent in the store of issue. Shoppers can pick up a Loyalty Card at any participating business and register it on the in-store tablet or on the Love Hoole website. Tablets also act as a marketing tool that displays promotional messages and general information about events in Hoole. The Trial scheme has been popular with local people, with over 2000 cards issued, and purchases made with the card totalling nearly a quarter of a million pounds. Rob Meakin, Technical Director at locally based Loyalty Pro who administer the scheme, said: “The beauty of the Love Hoole scheme is that customers only need one loyalty card for lots of different shops, which is much more convenient. We needed a trial as this is a new concept in community schemes with industry leading technology. We now plan to offer it to all the other businesses in the area, including sole traders and mobile businesses who can operate the scheme via their own smartphone.” “The scheme includes the ability for traders to offer their customers rewards based on spend by contacting them via email, text, or instant messaging”. Our aim is to give the local trader community the marketing tools that are only normally available to the big supermarkets to help them compete and ensure the area stays vibrant.” The extended roll out gives shoppers the option to download an app and use their smartphone instead of the physical card, and to donate their points to community causes via the website.Loyalty Pro have launched a media and radio campaign on Dee 106.3 to promote the scheme and encourage people from other parts of the area to sign up and shop in Hoole. Any local trader interested in being involved can call 01244 526010 for more information or visit our website www.lovehoole.com l Pictured: Rob Meakin, from Loyalty Pro
