Designing travel in Hoole Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen opens new Travel Agent
Global Travel Worldwide, operating in Wrexham for almost 18 years has gone from strength to strength, with a new concept opening in Hoole, Chester
and officially open Hoole office. Famed for designing people’s rooms on reality television programs, Laurence is also an ambassador for Beachcomber Tours, a tour operator specialising in luxury holidays to places like Mauritius and the Seychelles. As Global Travel Worldwide Hoole will be specialising in luxury, adventure and group travel, it is only fitting that a designer would open an office dealing with designing the perfect break. “It is an enormous delight and a great pleasure to be here to bring another slice of glamour in this world, and what a slice of glamour this is “ said Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen as he lead the crowd to a round of applause and cut the ribbon, officially opening the door to Global
The business has grown in many different ways, not only becoming the premier cruise travel agent and working closely with local private hire company for airport transfers, but also sponsoring sports teams within the local community. “Clive and I are amazed at the speed at which we have grown over the past 12 months and when the chance to expand further came to light we decided to take it with both hands” added Global Travel Worldwide MD Gavin Davies. Not allowing an opportunity to go missing, Global Travel Worldwide opened a new office in Hoole, Chester. Focusing on bespoke and tailor-made holidays and luxury travel, the Hoole office aims to help its customers who are looking for that once in a lifetime journey or to tick a destination off their bucket list. None other than interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen came along to cut the ribbon
Travel Worldwide Hoole. “We have been so excited since we found out that Caroline Chadwick from Beachcomber Tours was able to organise for Laurence to open the office. Laurence talked to everyone who came, told some of his travel stories and listened to others, he took selfies and had us laughing all afternoon. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our expansion. I am so glad that we have come to Hoole, as the community has welcomed us in and we hope to get involved with them in the extent that we have in Wrexham” Sam Eastwood, Branch Manager

Celebrations at ‘outstanding’ Werby’s St Werburgh’s & St Columba’s Catholic Primary School have recently been rated “outstanding” by the Diocese of Shrewsbury in their Religious Inspection report. The report praised the children for their “incredible respect and care for each other”. The report stated that “parent responses were overwhelmingly positive of the school.” It recognised pupils’ involvement in the wider community, their academic achievements and the children’s “obvious enjoyment and enthusiasm for their Religious Education lessons”. Headteacher Kathryn Oates said “I am very proud of all the children, staff, parents and governors at St Werburgh’s & St Columba’s.” “This judgment is a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of everyone working together in the school. St Werburgh’s & St Columba’s is a very special place and I am honoured to be the headteacher.”

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS
High summer in July J
uly and August are dominated by flowering perennials to bring colour into your garden. Visit one of the flower shows or some of the gardens open in July to get ideas for planting schemes to try at home. A few shrubs are in flower at this time including the classic Lavender. They revel in gravelly dry soil so are ideal for dry gardens. If you have a wall that needs something to drape over the edge, grow the English Lavender with pale blue flowers and aroma as you brush by. For a complete contrast try Spirea Golden Princess with bright yellow green leaves and magenta pink flowers. This shrub will grow into a low mound, can grow on dry or heavier soils in sun and if it gets too large, cut back hard in February. Perennial borders need plants of different heights and I recommend Veronicastrum virginicum Fascination growing to 2m tall with spikes of pale pink flowers. With it you can plant Hemerocallis or day lilies with their broad strappy leaves and bright colours from pink to red and yellow. They will grow up to 80cm tall. Another good companion is Phlox paniculata Prospero with pink flowers also a taller grower to 80cm. All these will enjoy a moisture retentive soil in sun. If you have a well drained soil then Lychnis coronaria with felted silver leaves and zingy pink or classy white flowers, is for you. For those gardens with damp, well drained soil, I would try Monarda didyma or Bergamot, a perennial with shaggy whorls of pink or red flowers up to 70cms. What to get on with in the garden? Keep pots well watered and stood in saucers to retain moisture. Cut back your evergreen hedges in July and August so that new growth has a chance to ripen and not be damaged in winter. Prune shrubs that flowered in June such as Deutzia, Weigela and Philadelphus. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. On 14th and 25th July, 8A Warwick Drive, Altrincham is open. If you love flower arranging then visit to seek ideas from the herbaceous border and see the new areas developing. Stretton Old Hall, Tilston, Malpas is open on 15th July and planting is described as “controlled exuberance. Five acres of gardens divided into discrete areas including herbaceous borders, kitchen garden and scree garden.

Praise for long serving hospice staff
Lynne Moorhead receives her award from Robert Mee and Margaret Hopkins
Over 30 members of staff at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd have been recognised for dedicating long service. The chairman of trustees, Robert Mee along with fellow trustee Margaret Hopkins presented the awards to 30 staff members who have achieved 10, 15, 20 or 25 years of continuous service. The event took place in a Marquee in the Backford hospice grounds which has been actively used as part of the Hospice Community Engagement Week to engage with the local community. Some of those recognised at the ceremony included Social Worker, Lynne Moorhead from the Hospice Family Support Team. Lynne, joined the Hospice 23 years ago She said: “Since joining 23 years ago I have seen the Hospice grow, both in numbers of staff and the number of patients we treat. In my time here I have been lucky to have met and worked with wonderful people and been part of a diverse team which goes from strength to strength. I thoroughly enjoy demonstrating how Hospice staff work together to provide the best care for patients and families with a life limiting illness.” Hospice chief executive Margaret Wright said: “It makes us very proud to recognise the longstanding support and hard work of so many of our staff. That level of continuity is vital in helping us progress our services and our patients benefit massively from their dedication. They all thoroughly deserve this recognition.” The Hospice of the Good Shepherd is a local independent charity providing end of life care and support for patients, their families and carers living with cancer and other life limiting illnesses in Chester, West Cheshire, Ellesmere Port and Deeside.

Hayley’s health and fitness
Don't get fat this summer BBQ and wine on a Friday evening when the sun is out - there has to be nothing nicer. Few beers and it’s time to relax and tuck into the massive feast of endless meats and nibbles. Us Brits like to take full advantage of the good weather when we have it, making the most of the late evenings with wine and goodies. Here’s how to make it a little less indulgent so we don’t get fat this summer. Choose lean meats for a BBQ, chicken breasts marinated in a spicy sauce with a salad with no dressing is actually a really good option for healthy eating. Staying away from processed meats such as burgers and sausages is wise but cutting out the buns can save yourself unnecessary calories. Steaks with a sweet potato are another healthier alternative to the processed meats. Portion control is something to be mindful of also. People often when buying for the weekend treats buy double, even triple the amount they actually will need, yet find it very easy to consume the lot in one sitting. An average cheese burger is 317 calories, hot dogs 155 calories, 90 calories per rib, potato salad is 357 calories per cup, 150 calories per bottle of beer, white wine 121 calories per glass. So, adding this up for an average meal, 1 hot dog, 1 burger, 4 beers, salad 5 ribs that’s without any other bits you might have we’re near to 1,900 calories in one meal without added extras. Add on extra drinks, all your food from the rest of the day and it’s easy to see how weight can creep on. Exercise is also something that may go out the window when the weather is nice. Do you
go to your regular exercise when it’s 30 degrees outside answer is probably no! However, work hard in the week and the weekends might not be so bad. Skip the hard work in the week and over indulge at the weekends and it’s no wonder your hot pants are feeling a little tighter. It’s useful to get your old summer clothes out a few months before the summer months to allow time to see where you re at. If work needs to be done this gives you time to get sorted and get yourself back on track, trying to squeeze back into last year’s clothes when you only have two weeks to do it in isn’t the best idea. So be mindful of portions, how much you have already consumed throughout the day and about picking the healthier options. Exercise and stay committed and don’t use the weather as an excuse to skip training! Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786

Hoole History Corner Ralph Earlam, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, looks at the friendly society
T
he discovery and content of a ‘Memorial’ (Petition) submitted in 1889 for a footbridge entrance to Chester General Station from Hoole.
The following account of the first procession of the Flookersbrook, Newton & Hoole Female Friendly Society appeared in the Chester Courant at Whitsuntide 1816. Similar reports were to appear in succeeding years, the last one found being in 1843 when the society’s name appears to have changed to The Ermine Female Club. In the first few years the church services were held at St. Oswald’s in Chester Cathedral, later St. John’s Church was the venue and in 1840 the newly built Christchurch in Newtown was used. In 1820, the dinner was “served up by Mrs. Monk the wife of the landlord of The Ermine, after which dancing commenced on The Green and continued until 6 o’clock when tea was served. To prevent intrusion lady non-members and gentlemen paid 2 shillings each for tea, if dancing only, 1 shilling.” In 1818 “the pleasures of the day terminated with feelings of regret by all who participated in the music fete”. In 1840 they concluded the evening by having “a right good merry dance”. Although these annual events were reported as the highlight of the society’s activities, there is unfortunately no other information on what the Society did or how it was organised. Friendly Societies were set up to provide insurance for its members in the event of illness or disability, and benefits were paid to its members; female friendly societies were able to respond to particular circumstances such as pregnancy, childbirth and female ailments; note the surgeon (then the term for a doctor) taking part in the procession. trouble and elderly employees e.g. cooks and maids unable to work any longer could be helped. Neston Female Friendly Society has provided the following information on its scheme: Monthly subscriptions (premiums) were paid according to age, 6 pence if under 20, 8 pence between 20 and 25, 1 shilling between 35 and 40 etc. Like present day insurance there were rules as to eligibility. Benefits included: For sickness: 4 shillings weekly after being unable to work for 1 week on producing an Order from the Surgeon such allowance to be continued for 6 months if ill for so long; if longer only 2 shillings and 6 pence. In old age: a weekly allowance of 2 shillings and 6 pence. On death: if a member for 6 years £2, for 8 years £4, for 10 years £6 providing she had a child or children born in lawful wedlock or other relatives dependent upon her support; otherwise, in no case more than £2. In childbirth: on the birth of a child 5 shillings. The Surgeon was appointed on a salary of £15 per annum to attend all the benefitted members in case of sickness and to find them proper medicines. Those who took part in the Flookersbrook, Newton & Hoole Society were clearly from well to do families of the area and many of the names are recognisable. The prime organisers were the Hesketh family who lived at Newton Hall. Henry Hesketh Senior was a notable City wine merchant; records of the Port of
Chester show him importing port wine on a regular basis. His son, Henry carried on the business and his wife became the President of the Society. One of their daughters Emma, then aged 23, is credited with the establishment of the Society, designing the beehive insignia, ensuring white shawls edged with green were worn and that wands (long sticks) surmounted by evergreens were available. Emma married Rev. Thomas Blackburne in August 1819. Following her husband’s sudden death in 1847 she settled at Spring Hill in Boughton. She died in April 1886 aged 91 and a stained-glass window in Chester Cathedral is dedicated to her memory. The lady patronesses were Lady Broughton who lived at Hoole House and was well known for her gardens there; Lady Kilmorey, the wife of the Lord of the Manor of Newton; and Mrs. T. Cotton a member of a prominent local family. Other members included the sisters, Mrs Francis Bagnall and Mrs. Maria Moore who owned the land on which Moor Park was built; Mrs. Tonna a sister in law of the Hamiltons; Miss Brittain a member of the prominent land holding family; Mrs. Walker nee Catherine Lightfoot, the wife of Thomas Walker; and Miss Broster daughter of John Broster of Brook Lodge, printer, publisher, historian. In 1820 a Miss Brown (Browns of Chester) is listed and in 1823 Mrs. Sedgwick who had moved into Hoole Hall. Nationally, a number of female friendly societies continued to exist for many years, using their local Church as a focus. This area did not have its own Church until All Saints opened in 1867. The coming of the railways in 1840 saw the social pattern of the area changing completely probably explaining the disappearance of Flookersbrook, Newton & Hoole Female Friendly Society.
The next meeting of HH&HS is on Wednesday 18th of July - it is a Members Evening to discuss progress since the 2017 AGM, new members will be welcome.

In their debut at Pontins, the Under 10s Chester Cherries came fourth in the under 11s age group.
The two under 11st teams emerged with great credit in their first Pontins weekender. The 11s Raiders went unbeaten all weekend while the Bandits finished fourth.
The threadbare Under 12s Cheerios squad performed brilliantly, winning their age group.
Success has come easily for the Under 13s Tigers team who have lost only one game in the last three years. The girls didn’t disappoint this year, sweeping away all competition and roaring to a convincing win against Middlesbrough team Grangetown in the final.
Netball girls have fun in the sun Chester Netball team enjoyed a phenomenally successful weekend at the Pontins tournament recently. The girls, who come from Chester and Ellesmere Port, were victorious in several age groups – and also had a great time off the court! Right: It was a magnificent seven wins on the Saturday for the Under 14s team. Wins in the quarters and semis were followed by a narrow defeat to Grangetown in the final on the Sunday.
The Gladiators and Legions Under 15s teams continued their great record at Pontins, with yet another age group victory.

FOOTBALL v RELIGION BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
It has been said that Football is the new religion. The ‘beautiful game’ certainly does generate a lot of passion and love it or loathe it you certainly can’t get way from it.
either England will be out or they’ve progressed as far as the quarter finals!! Certainly the pubs in and around Hoole are all geared up and focused on the World Cup with many of them showing all the games live!
How many pages of newspaper and magazine print have been taken up with the media interest in the lives of some of the modern day football superstars? The Sunday papers devote dozens of pages covering the events from the previous day plus every day of the week on Sky, BT Sport or now even on Amazon Prime you can watch a live match!
So how do football and Christianity compare? An interesting statistic I read recently was that there are still more people in church on a Sunday then in all the football stadiums across England, when you reflect on football matches certainly there are some similarities to Christian worship:
Here in Chester we have read with interest their struggles on and off the field of Chester FC and their recent relegation from the Conference League! Certainly football as a sport has developed over the last 10 years with attendances increasing across the Premier and Championship Leagues by 31% with television audiences growing to just under 25 million viewers per season!
• Where do large crowds raise their hands in the air in exultation?
As I write this it seems as though we have wall to wall coverage of football as the World Cup takes place in Russia, the question will England do as badly as in the 2016 Euros preoccupies many, although by the time you read this the answer will be academic as
•Where do large crowds gather to sing and chant? Churches and football grounds.
Churches and football grounds. • Where do people gather to express their collective aspirations, their feelings, their emotions? Churches and football grounds. Now of course the resemblance is only superficial. Bread and wine is not the same as pies and Bovril. The adulation of our football heroes falls short of worship but only just. All our footballers can do is play football to the limit of their ability. They give us delight when they show their skills, and satisfaction when they win on
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 30 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
our behalf. So does this make football a new religion – it’s certainly true there are some familiar characteristics with going to a football match and attending church. Where else would you find groups of adults singing and gathering together to worship? Where can you belong to a crowd of people who are all following the same thing? We are making the players into idols, and the ‘professional game’ some would say is in crisis. The amount of money invested in the top clubs is immoral and can sometimes make the players and managers seem “god like” in their adoration and following. So I would suggest for some it is! Don’t get me wrong I love football but it is not the No 1 thing in my life; there is only person who is really worth following and worshipping, he is Jesus Christ.

Summer is here and it’s time to get your outside space in order. Why not give us a call, and we can give you some great ideas to improve your home’s kerb appeal.
Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
