By Richard Wheeler Cert.REA Many people have asked us how to show off their home at its best in this busy market period so we have put together some handy hints and tips on how to prepare your home for sale. It is vital to create the right FIRST IMPRESSIOn and a tidy looking house will attract more viewings, giving you more choices and hopefully a higher price. The first thing a buyer sees is the outside of your home. If looks untidy they will automatically assume that the inside is the same. Take some time to tidy the garden, trim the borders, sweep the drive, add some flower pots or hanging baskets and, if it needs it, even paint the front door. The standard of dEcORaTIOn is always a consideration so walk through your property with a critical eye. Over time paint work becomes marked especially around light switches and on stairs with no wall rail. Check that all lights have working bulbs, the windows are clean both inside and out, there’s no dripping tap or broken fencing and that the curtains are put up properly. A kITchEn is often the engine room of a home where walls and tiles are subject to a greater amount of wear and tear. Before you go ripping it all out, try painting the walls, re-grouting the tiles, deep-cleaning cupboard fronts and surfaces, you may be surprised what an effect this has (and it could save you thousands of pounds!). If you are considering replacing the kitchen before you sell, please talk to us first so that we can help you assess the viability, cost and benefit. The baThROOM is another key area. It should be clean and fresh, with no water marks or lime scale encrusted taps. Replacing a window blind or shower head & hose can have a huge impact. The suite should be well sealed and the tiles clean and grouted. Clear away the toiletries, fold the towels and put the loo seat down! dE-cluTTER! It’s the phrase most sellers dread, but it doesn’t have to be painful! A large proportion of buyers are moving to gain more ‘space’, so show it off to them, don’t hide it! Make sure smaller or narrower areas such as the hallway, stairs and landing are free from clutter, especially at floor and eye level. A tidy room presents much better than an untidy one so clear away the kids’ toys, put the dog basket in the garage, take down the birthday cards (temporarily) and put the dishes away. Another important factor for many purchasers is the OuTSIdE SPacE your home has to offer. Patios and decking should be moss free and clean, the lawn well cut and the borders weeded. If you have a garage, try and keep it in order (although we know this is not always easy!) In autumn months you may need to sweep up leaves and cut back summer growth. always remember you are selling in a competitive environment. your house must stand out more to your buyer than any other property for sale at the time. Hoole hunks bare nearly INHIBITIONS are being put to one side as Hoole hunks appear in various states of undress for a charity calendar. Entitled ‘Raunchy for Rachel’, the photographs will feature lots of hunky men from Hoole, including builders from Hartley & Parry Developments, Ben from The Suburbs and the lads at Dee Rangers football club. Pam Le Ballois, Sue Mason, Jo Street and photographers Sally Peacock and David

Landells have got together to produce the calendar with the help of numerous male models. Pam’s idea was to produce the calendar for her friend Rachel Stretch who is terminally ill with a brain tumour. Rachel has chosen the Brains Trust as the charity to benefit from sales of the calendar which can be bought from the likes of erj, Oliver George and Telford’s. It will be launched on Rachel’s birthday, Sunday 14th June, 3pm, at The Piper, in Hoole, when prints of the photos will be auctioned off. My name is Rachel Stretch and I have a Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade four brain tumour which is terminal. Rachel has a Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade 4 brain tumour which is terminal. It was diagnosed two years ago after she was admitted to hospital with a blinding headache and vomiting. After being transferred from the Countess A&E to the Walton Centre in Liverpool, surgeons carried out emergency surgery to try and remove the tumour. Despite two years of illness, the tumour has now stabilised and Rachel’s next scan will be in six months instead of three, which is great news. Rachel said: “My family and I were helped enormously by Brainstrust. Brainstrust aims to help everyone diagnosed with a brain tumour access the help they need to get back on top of things by improving clinical care for brain tumour sufferers and provide co-ordinated support in their search for treatment. Labour now have 38 councillors, with the Tories on 36 and one independent. Willow wands make a shady shelter The children of Newton Primary School are no stranger to environmental challenges! Recently, as part of their upcoming ‘Trees Please’ topic, they have been planting willow wands, to create a 30ft long green tunnel. The tunnel, covering the popular pathway which links the school buildings with the Millennium Greenway, will be used by children every day. The children had to measure the distances between the wands to ensure they were well spaced out and helped tie them in place to provide stability to the structure. The tunnel will provide a dual benefit - a shady shelter from the heat of the sun in summer and additional drainage for the damper area of the large school field in winter. In hindsight, I should have run to the bargain bin, scooped up all of the items and raced her to the till, making her wait while I scanned each of the reduced barcodes and whooped and hollered at the prospect of eating such delicacies as a vegetable Somosa, Yakult and ready sliced watermelon. Things I’d never have been able to have afforded should they not have been price slashed to within an inch of their shelf lives. But sadly, I, like the majority of those around me simply let my jaw hit the floor as she breezed away like an early summer tornado. The calm that settled behind her was bathed slightly in Chanel and the late afternoon sun that tumbled in through the automatic doors. It won’t be long before the Midnight Flicks dare the summer rain and the free

tables in the pubs are back inside again. As much as I am basking in this warmer weather, I am anticipating the ‘oh it’s too hot’ mutterings from the queue at the post office because that is a key indicator that the good old British summer has arrived. Those laughing reddened faces in the Brom are sun exposed rather than frost bitten and the distant chimes of the army of ice cream vans heading back to Hoole install excitement rather than the eerie apocalyptic chill they bring during the winter. The summer is here, and while the kids are still in school, I am making the most of it. There’s a New York flavour on the walls of Oliver George, Italian Tapas as Nonna Rosa’s and something new and inviting on Charles Street. Something less sleepy than its name evokes. Take a stroll in the evenings, sit by the open windows in the Faulkner and people watch while counting your blessings that we’re blooming lucky to have found ourselves here, in these ‘north westerly,’ diverse and thoroughly fascinating streets of NottingHoole (insert hashtag where applicable).

HOOLE RANGERS FC Rangers retain Premier league status Hoole Rangers 1st team had a really good run-in, winning four out of the last six games, seeing us climb from bottom position at the start of this period, to the safety of 10th at the end of the season, writes Glyn Roberts. Playing against other struggling sides was not an advantage as all teams were fighting to avoid relegation and putting out strong sides in order to pick up valuable points. The first win away against Christleton Celtic FC by 3-2 was a real boost to confidence as it meant we climbed 2 places from the bottom position, and out of the relegation zone. The next win at home to Ellesmere Port Town FC by 4-1 built on this momentum and put us in confident mood for the most important fixture against bottom placed Blacon Youth reserves which Rangers won 3-2. A 1-0 defeat to Kelsall was turned into a 3-2 win in the reverse fixture a week later. The final game against 5th placed Kelma was of little consequence and ended in a 3-0 defeat. Hoole Reserves continued to struggle in Division 1, losing all of their remaining games. However, the margin of defeat was much less than previously, and showed signs that we have the nucleus of a good side going forward, we just need to pick up some new players. While this season has been disappointing, if we consider that the original reserve team manager left two months into the season, taking most of his players with him, it has been a real achievement to have completed all the

games. We are now relatively secure in terms of squad numbers, and with new additions in the summer, we are confident we will put up a better performance next year. l The end of season presentation evening took place at New Scene on Saturday 16th May. The presenters and trophy winners are shown in picture: Mark Roberts, 1st team manager; Graham Scheuber, 2nd team manager and Clubman of the year; Richard Howard, 2nd team Players Player and Committees player of the year; and Nick Turner 1st team Players Player and Committees player of the year. l Thanks to former councillors Walmsley and Parry, we will be moving back to our original pitch next season as the drainage work has been completed and the grass will be fully recovered. l We will be taking a well earned break during the summer, but will start pre-season training in July. Summer delights June is a month when there is so much on flower so here are a few of my favourites to plant in your garden. For those with free draining soil in sun then the fleeting heads of Alliums are worth growing. They come in small and large heads of mainly pink and purple flowers. I suggest your plant in groups amongst low growing perennials such as Nepeta or Catmint, for best effect. For ground cover I would choose the low growing Osteospermums such as Whirligig which is covered in pink flowers over a long period in summer. It can die back in severe winters but if you have a well drained soil in sun and want a plant to cover a large area by its creeping stems then this is one for you. Grow it alongside the silvery leaved, low growing evergreen shrub Convolvulus cneorum with white flowers in summer. However, it is tender and will die off in cold winters in an exposed position so grow it somewhere sheltered. June is a good month for other shrubs so look out for Spirea Golden Princess with its gorgeous orangey leaves and flashy cerise pink flower heads in June. It will grow in most soils provided it is in a sunny

position. If it’s scent you want then Philadelphus Belle Etoile will fill a small garden with a lovely fragrance. It will grow on light or heavy soils and if it becomes too large then cut it back hard after flowering. Clip back Cytisus or Brooms, Aubretia and spring flowering heathers with shears after flowering. Plant out small plants of cabbages, broccoli and leeks to grow on for winter. Make extra plantings of French Beans, and even courgettes to prolong the season. Don’t forget to earth up your potatoes. If you would like to visit gardens, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Visit Bowmere Cottage in Tarporley on Sunday 21st June to see roses and clematis growing in this beautiful English country garden with courtyards, pergola and abundant herbaceous borders. Also open on 6th and 7th June is Bank House in Bickerton. This has terraces with borders stocked with shrubs, trees and herbaceous plants plus ponds and a wild garden.

Pupils hit the right note at Cathedral Chester Cathedral was full of musical celebration in May as local primary schools, including St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s, in Hoole joined Manchester Camerata in celebrating 175 years of teaching at Chester University. The “On Chester On” project has developed over the last five months and is by far the most ambitious community venture undertaken by the Camerata. Rachel Borman, a music teacher from St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s, said: “Pupils and students explored and engaged in teaching and learning approaches from the Victorian era to present day. These included rote learning, didactic learning, learning through creativity and experiential learning that is learning through doing. “With the support from the professional artists and musicians the children, teaching students and tutors worked imaginatively and created and composed all the music, songs and drama which were performed to a crowd of hundreds.” Rachel added: “Once again we are so grateful to have been part of this amazing opportunity. Using music and drama children have been able to explore and learn about the history of the University and use imagination and creativity to bring this learning to life. Since the performance the children have been so excited and thrilled with their achievements and have grown in confidence and self esteem during this project.”

WHO LET THE DADS OUT? BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Six-year-old Jacob decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor. He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor, which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten. Jacob was covered with flour and getting Andy Glover has lived in frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mum and Dad, but Hoole with his wife Sue it was getting very bad. He didn’t know what to do next, whether to put it for 27 years. Andy began all into the oven or on the stove and he didn’t know how the stove worked! at Hoole Baptist Church, Suddenly he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push on Westminster Road, her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically he tried to clean as Youth Pastor, before up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pyjamas dirty and sticky. And just then, he saw hid dad standing at the door. Big crocodile becoming the Pastor and tears welled up in Jacob’s eyes. All he’d wanted to do was something good, but now Team Leader. he’d made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But, his father just watched him. Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pyjamas dirty and sticky in the process! In the 1840s, Charles Francis Adams, a great American diplomat, wrote this in his diary: “Went fishing with my son today - a day wasted.” On the same day, his son Brook Adams wrote in his diary: “Went fishing with my father - the most wonderful day of my life!” This June we shall celebrate Father’s Day (Sunday 21st , in fact it is the 105th anniversary of Father’s Day; I must admit I sometimes think the role model of a good Father in society is becoming an endangered species! All too often we hear stories of Fathers deserting their families, children growing up with no experience of Fatherhood or families where the Father is emotional disengaged from his children or too busy with work to spend time with them. Maybe what children most need today is time and attention from both their parents. Over the past few years, the church I lead has been trying to address some of these issues and we run a number of activities aimed at dads, make carers and Father figures… Let me ask you dads of young families out there, how would you prefer to spend a Saturday morning? 1. creating another DIY disaster; 2. trudging around the shops; or 3. having fun with your toddler while eating bacon butties and chatting with other dads? If your choice would be option 3, then Who Let The Dads Out? is for you! Who Let the Dads Out? is a toddler group for fathers (and other male carers) and their pre-school children. It aims to: - be a fun way for dads and children to spend time together, and - be a place where fathers can meet other men in the same position. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month in Hoole Lighthouse Centre, from 10am to midday). In addition to a wide range of toddlers’ toys and a craft table, there are the famous bacon sandwiches, good coffee and good company. It is regularly attended by 30-45 dads and up to 60 kids. We also have Who Let The Dads Out? II – this runs exactly the same as the mornings on the 1st Saturday but club is for dads, male carers and their infant school aged children. The group meets on the third Saturday of each month in Hoole Lighthouse Centre, from 10am to midday) In closing let me finish with this final thought, Children brought up without a constant, reliable father-figure in their lives usually find it hard in later life to understand and experience the constant love of God as their Heavenly Father. If your natural parent isn’t there to show his love for you, how hard will it be to accept the love of God? Saint Paul wrote this: “Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how God loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.”
