Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Launch days are a resounding success!

S
omerville’s Estate Agents are bringing a modern approach to the Chester property market with their ‘launch days’ and ‘easy evenings’.
Having opened in February 2014, Somerville’s Estate Agents are transforming the Chester property market with their fresh and modern marketing approach to selling and buying homes. Many people have already been impressed with the level of customer service provided by Somerville’s and their launch day and evening viewing events have proved popular with both buyers and sellers. Richard Wheeler, Director of Somerville’s says: “Our open house events have been a resounding success as they work for everyone. For the seller it means that most of the viewings can be completed over a couple of hours and they can be reassured that their property has been fully market tested and the best price is achieved. Buyers have peace of mind that they won’t be ‘pipped to the post’ by an earlier offer.” “The open house idea really worked for us,” said Mrs Evans, from Hoole. “With a young family it was important for us to be able to sell our house with the least disruption possible. We were able to get the house ready once and then go out for the day, leaving things in the capable hands of Somerville’s. By the time we got back we had a number of offers. It was as simple as that!” Miss Parry, from Chester, said: “I work full time so viewing houses can be difficult. The open evening meant that we could arrange the viewing in the knowledge that it wouldn’t be sold before we got a chance to see it. Somerville’s friendly staff were on hand during the appointment to answer any questions we had. Perfect!”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
EARLY SUMMER B
Y June, the garden is at its peak with new foliage, many flowering perennials and shrubs.
For those with well drained soil, flowers like Alliums are popping up fleetingly. The large heads of Allium aflatunense Purple Sensation will grow to about 75cm tall. A sun loving shrub is Cistus purpureus Alan Fradd which has semi evergreen leaves and lovely pure white flowers with red blotches at the base of each petal. Growing to about 1m in height and width it is a good shrub for summer. Those with heavier damp soil, have a look out for Aruncus. This is a large perennial growing to 1m in width and has tall spires of feathery Astilbe like cream flowers. It will grow in any heavy wet soil in sun or light shade. If you have average soil, neither well drained nor heavy clay then a lovely easy shrub for early summer are Weigelas. They grow in any situation in sheltered or exposed positions and provide many pink or red flowers in early summer. If the shrub becomes too large, cut back after flowering to ensure new growth for next year as it flowers on wood from the previous year. Maintenance jobs to do in the garden in June include pruning Cherry trees. However as the trees are in leaf it is more difficult than pruning a tree in winter as the shape is difficult to see. It is best not to do this in winter as cuts can develop canker. Prune any shrubs that have just finished flowering. Plant seeds or summer salads and vegetables that mature fast, like lettuce, radishes and carrots. If you have grown leeks or broccoli from seed, plant them into their final positions in June or early July. l If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. 150 Barrel Well Hill in Chester is open on 25th and 26th June with a superb terraced garden overlooking the river Dee with a stream running through the bog garden and huge variety of flowering plants. The Old Cottage at Frodsham is open on 4th and 5th June with a large organic, wildlife friendly garden with herbaceous borders and pond. C
HARLES Street was given its name to recognise Charles, the last of the Hamilton family to own this part of Hoole. When it was built in the 1850’s it was mainly residential and remained so even 100 years later. Some shops were built, the earliest reference being the sale in 1854 of a “recently erected dwellinghouse with spacious shop, warehouse, yard and shippons (cattle sheds), situate on the north side in the occupation of Thomas Pemberton”. It is almost certain that this became No. 24, occupied for many years by the Roberts family, cow keepers and butchers. It was then briefly occupied by George Stalker, dairyman, and William Wild, fishmonger, before continuing as a butcher’s shop run by the Roberts family again. Chatwins the bakers is the only shop still carrying out its original trade. The first baker and grocer there (in the 1857 Directory) was Henry Richards, a prominent member of Hoole Local Board from its founding in 1864.His son took over the business
and for a number of years also ran Hoole Post Office from there which had transferred from Balshaw’s shop (now Lewis’s Ice Cream) in Peploe Street (now Westminster Rd). The bakery later became a branch of Charles Roberts of 19 Brook Street and, following the death in 1894 of Mr. Roberts who lived at No. 1 Alexandra Terrace, it was run by Thomas Langford. The Post Office had meanwhile moved to the chemist’s shop run by David Dickinson at 2 Faulkner Street. In 1914 Thomas Jones who had run a bakery in Peploe Street, also at Lewis’s, took over the Charles Street premises and continued until the 1950’s. P.A. Davies from Newtown then installed one of their branches there until it was recently taken over by Chatwins. Remarkably, for over 100 years a horse and cart delivery service was operated (see picture). An incident is recorded when a horse broke the shafts of Richards’ delivery trap and bolted in Phillip Street! The first advertisement for houses appeared in January 1855 when “seven substantially built and neatly finished dwellinghouses let to respectable tenants at the low rent of £83 p.a.” were put on sale. In 1873 the shop on the corner of Faulkner Street with 2 attached cottages in Charles Street was advertised. (This is now Sainsbury’s but many readers will remember Peters Electrics which occupied the site from 1956 until 2011.) In a subsequent sale in 1890 the shop and cottages were bought by William Stringer, licensee of the Faulkner Arms, for £600. The original shop was a grocery run by Charles Harrison in the 1890’s and by William Holmes in the mid 20th C. In the 1860’s Miss Carver’s

School occupied the premises before moving to Westminster Road School. On the other side of the entry in 1871 No. 8 was a butcher’s shop which became Thomas Baldwin’s greengrocery from 1891 to the late 1950’s. Occupants of some of the houses ran businesses from their premises. A shoemaker, dressmaker, milliner, commission agent (bookmaker) and a piano tuner are listed in early Directories, and in 1871 Hoole Local Board rented one as an office for its surveyor, William Grice. Front rooms were gradually converted into shops and some of the tenants within living memory included Magnus Clark the chemist at No 12, Miss Thacker’s smallwares (haberdashery) shop at No. 6, Mrs. Mutch’s sweetshop No. 9 and at No. 18 Isaac Simpson the dairyman who sold his business to Deva Dairies,.
Beck, Thomas Todd, J.S. Hornby, James Broadhurst and Alice Benyon. The well-dressed inhabitants of Hoole would no doubt have enjoyed using the bars, cafés and restaurants and the high class hairdressers which have now replaced many of the retail shops. Raking in the money for the hospice The Hoole Allotment and Garden Association (HAGA) raised a total of £1,000 for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd from their open day last year. While the day was meant to raise awareness of allotments in the community, it also provided an opportunity to raise money and support charity. Pictured are members of the subcommittee who organised the event; Sue Caroe, Helen Wilkinson and David Moulton. This year’s open day takes place on Sunday 10th July – more info next month.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY
A
BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
S I’m sure you are aware we are in the midst of celebrations that mark the 90th Birthday of the Queen. As the Queen has two birthdays each year - one on the anniversary of the day she was born, and one an “official” birthday in June. It’s a tradition that was started by George II in 1748 and is owes its origins to the ageless problem of the British weather. George was born in November, and felt the weather would be too cold at that time of year for his annual birthday parade. It is a tradition that has continued to this day. All British sovereigns are given the option of having an “official” birthday, and because the Queen’s real birthday is on April 21, she has stuck with the tradition of celebrating in June. This year “Trooping the Colour” will be on June 11, actually the day after the Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday!
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
Here are some interesting facts about the Queen: • The Queen is the longest serving monarch. Only five other kings and queens in British history have reigned for 50 years or more. The previous longest was Victoria (63 years) • Over the reign, Her Majesty has given regular audiences to 12 Prime Ministers. Some of these have been: Winston Churchill (1951-55); Harold Wilson (1964-70) and (1974-76); Margaret Thatcher (1979-90) and Tony Blair (1997-2007). • She is currently patron of over 600 charities and organisations, over 400 of which she has held since 1952. • The Queen has sent over 175,000 telegrams to centenarians in the UK and the Commonwealth. • The Queen has attended 36 Royal Variety performances. • The Queen has launched 21 ships during her reign. Over the past few years the Queen has talked about her faith in Jesus Christ especially within her Christmas Day message. In2015 she said “the Gospel of John contains a verse of great hope, often read at Christmas carol services: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”, later she made reference to Joseph and Mary and the circumstances of Jesus’s birth - in a stable; stating “It’s no surprise that such a human story still captures our imagination and continues to inspire all of us who are Christians, the world over.” For me as I reflect on this I believe the Queen is very clear about her faith and whilst she is very affirming of other faiths she’s quite clear that she is a Christian! “The Queen has served us all her adult life, with amazing consistency of character, concern for others and a clear dependence on Christ. The more I’ve read what she’s written and talked to people who know her, the clearer that is. To have a monarch who talks openly about Jesus in a very relaxed and natural way, I find that a huge encouragement and hope that Christians across the country will take a leaf out of The Queen’s book and learn to talk about Jesus in a natural way with friends, relatives and colleagues, so people can discover more about what it means to be a follower of Jesus.”
Queen Elizabeth II reflects on Jesus’ central role in her life in a new book written to celebrate her 90th birthday, calling Christ “the King she serves” in the title. “I have been — and remain — very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for his steadfast love,” the British monarch writes in the foreword to “The Servant Queen and the King She Serves”, which was released in April. Within the book she reflects on trusting God in the dark and tough times in life, the importance of forgiveness, the significance of prayer and the Bible being more valuable than the Crown Jewels!! The Servant Queen is not a profit-making book and is intended to be given as a gift to others as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. I have some copies of this book which is being published by HOPE, Bible Society and the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity and would gladly give away the book to anyone who might be interested in reading more about Her Majesty and the King, Jesus, she serves. Just email me at hello@hbc.org.uk with your name and address and I will gladly send you a copy.

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
Location, Location, Location I’ve become the fattest person I know. It was confirmed recently at a golden wedding anniversary with a series of comments that cemented my new status. There was a solitary muffin left over from the afternoon tea. It was all very posh. Cake stands and bone china cups and saucers. Sugar served with tongs. I’d wrestled a raspberry jam filled muffin and, to be honest, the muffin had come of slightly better. I was attempting to scrape a congealing lump of Tiptree’s finest from my newly pressed shirt when another guest who I was yet to be introduced to decline the offer of the last one and said “oh no. Let him have it” and nodded towards me in a way that showed she was afraid she might have been depriving me of diabetes.
I decided upon returning to home, I was going to keep up that same level of fitness. I was going to walk everywhere. I was going to get out an about in my neighbourhood and not miss a thing. I was not going to sit back on my 40 something laurels and settle into this person I had created.
Following that, we sat down to eat our meal and as the first course was being served, a gentleman, whom I assume is a distant relative, leant in and said “is that going to be enough for you?” I’m not sure if I was insulted or spooked. It had a slight whiff of fattening up the prize pig for the ceremonial dinner. I swear some of them were licking their lips as they eyed me up. Roald Dahl couldn’t have penned it better.
The sun that breaks the single-glazed draughty windows is not as warm as the Californian sun but in terms of location, it shines where I have grown roots here in Chester. The bricks and mortar may belong to somebody else but Chester is my home.
Having politely declined the extra helpings and avoided the big old rusty cauldron bubbling away in the kitchen, I got back to my room, looked at myself in the mirror and thought ‘yeah. I need make some changes.’ I’ve recently returned from San Francisco where I was amazed at how quickly my aerobic capacity increased. Having decided I wanted to spend the first few days exploring the iconic city on foot, I soon realised that my body was not cut out for urban hill climbing. The short vertical walk from the station to our hotel had me hyperventilating on street corners. I was fighting the urge not to double up in a sweaty mess. Instead I pretended to check my phone for confirmation that we were on the right street and diverted any attention from the painful truth that my lungs had leapt up into my brain and were threatening to explode from my ears. On day two, I was role-playing the just checking my mobile waiting for my lungs to return to my chest when an elderly lady marched on past with shopping bags bursting at the seams. I watched her zigzag across the streets and decided to use her as my marker. Together we marched up some of the steepest routes and finally she left me down at the Wharf, ducking into a one of the Chinese stores before the touristy gift shops began to consume the last part of the street.
But I found my home exactly as I had left it. The hole in the kitchen ceiling where the landlord had failed to fix the leaking bathroom from last September was a not-so-polite reminder that this is not my house. The watermarks on the walls that were penned as ‘in need of decoration’ over seven years ago are a wake-up call that if I am still here at 40 then I am not where I need to be. These are not my watermarks. They are not my history. This is not my empire.
So the First Time Buyers Mortgage meeting is set. The ISA is underway. Rightmove and Zoopla are new icons on my phone and I’m thinking in postcodes. I’ve been thrown the “location, location, location” cliché and it’s got me thinking: is Hoole the ideal location? Is the ‘desirable place to live’ stamped by those not living here? It’s certainly ‘lively’ with the neighbouring house parties now kicking off at 3am. It’s certainly ‘bustling’ with traffic, pushchairs and pedestrians attempting to push their way around abandoned vehicles. There is certainly something about the ‘vibrant’ feel of the youngsters (I can say that now) that move through the shared housing or those who zigzag their way through the streets at stupid o’clock using the loudest as their markers their Ebay purchased Michael Kors splitting at the seams. If I wanted to adapt to my neighbourhood it would appear that I either fire up my own playlist at 4am in a definite challenge to next door or just live with it - which appears to be the course of action the rest of the neighbourhood has taken! Turning 40 now appears to be the very opposite of what I imagined. I’m not ready to settle into something where I’m encouraged to put up and shut up. This isn’t my desired location. I’m not where I want to be physically or... well, physically. I need to shape up rather than shut up and I need to make the changes I want to see in my surroundings before I claim to be king of my castle...
