CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

Life-saver Keith honoured by police chief Hoole’s Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett has received recognition for his heroics. Keith was given the Chief Constable’s Commendation after saving a man’s life on City Road last year. Noticing that the 42-year-old man wasn’t breathing, Keith called for an ambulance and started CPR. Within a minute, the man began breathing and when the paramedics arrived they said his swift actions had saved the man’s life. Keith said: “When I saw him lying on the ground, I didn’t hesitate to go over and help. As soon as I heard him let out a big gasp of air I was so relieved and happy.” Keith was presented with the award by the acting Chief Constable of Cheshire Janette McCormick at a ceremony at HQ in Winsford.

Keep car keys safe Homeowners have been warned to keep their car keys out of sight following a spate of ‘hook and cane’ thefts recently in Hoole and Newton. PCSO Keith Bartlett says that a man has been caught and has since admitted to a string of offences in Chester and Ellesmere Port. He used a cane with a hook on the end to reach through letterboxes and windows to steal car keys and house keys. Houses in Hoole and Newton were a particular target, with a number of high value cars, including a Golf GTi, stolen.

Hoole couple join hike to raise money for mental health Hoole residents Julian and Gillian Eyre set to trek 40 miles in 24hours in aid of mental health charity Mind this June. Julian (52) and Gillian (51) have switched theatrical pursuits following a sell-out run at Chester Storyhouse of Singin’ in the Rain, directed by Julian for Chester Operatic Society, to hiking 40 miles in what they hope will be sunshine. The couple, who work for the NHS on the Wirral, hope that with the support of their colleagues, friends and family, they will raise an incredible £1500 for Mind which provides support and advice for anyone experience mental health problems. Julian said: “In 2014 we were joined by an amazing group of people on a bike ride the length of the Leeds Liverpool canal for Mind. Many fell off, one fell in but the final sum raised was over £6000. We hope this challenge is going to be a little drier. Now it’s time to do something more to support people living with mental illness. “ Gillian added “Every week in the UK nearly 100 people take their own lives. It’s a shocking statistic isn’t it? I’m taking part in this event for Mind because I really believe in their cause. We, as a family know the devastating effects of mental illness; my Dad took his own life in 2012. Coming to terms with losing a loved one in this way is not a journey I would want anyone to experience. The money raised will fund vital work including the Mind Infoline, advice services and the campaigning Mind does.” To support Julian and Gillian’s challenge, please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/ JulianandGillian to donate.

Elderly man scammed Detectives are urging witnesses to come forward after an elderly man was scammed in Chester. The victim received a phone call from a man purporting to be a senior police officer from London, who told him that someone had been using his credit card and that the money in his account was not safe. He was tricked into believing that he had verified the so-called senior police officer’s identity by calling 999 and he was then coerced into withdrawing a large quantity of money in Euros and handing it over to a courier for safekeeping. The courier collected the money from he man’s house after the fake police officer arranged for the victim to meet him there. Detective Constable Stephen Owens said: “The victim has been tricked into handing over a large quantity of money and has been left devastated by this scam.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Blooms for June T

here are many beautiful perennials flowering in June and it is difficult to choose which ones to have in the garden.

I would love to have delphiniums but the slugs get them in my heavy soil. However, if you can keep the slugs off, they can pop up each year with tall spires of rich blue, pink or white flowers. In autumn many will flower again if you cut the dead flowering spikes off in summer. Another reliable perennial for damper soils are the magnificent Rodgersias with their large Horse Chestnut shaped leaves and tall robust stems with white or red flowers. I saw them at Dunham Massey garden last year growing with huge Alliums. Alliums will flower each year and are often teamed with roses. Will thrive in heavier well drained soils and are especially good in drier borders. Shrubs can form the backbone of a border so why not indulge in a Deutzia. A small on Deutzia Gracilis has little white flowers or Rosealind a taller shrub to 1m with rich pink clusters of flowers. They will grow in sun or lights shade and any soil provided it is not dry. For a larger shrub or small tree one of my favourites are the Sambucus or Elderflower with the purple or golden foliage. Sambucus Black Beauty likes a damp heavy soil and has pink flowerheads in early summer. Make Elderflower cordial with the flowers and it will be pink! Roses are centre stage in June so make sure you feed them well with a proprietary rose feed, spray with soapy water to remove an excess of whitefly and keep dead heading them. Work to be done in the garden includes trimming Privet and Box hedging. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering. Keep climbing roses and clematis tied in and under control. Keep removing any side shoots from tomatoes. Thin apples, apricots and plums where there are many fruitlets on stems to one or two. Continue planting radishes, small carrots and lettuces for succession. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. 150 Barrel Well Hill, Boughton, Chester is open on 23rd and 24th June. A terraced garden with informal cottage garden planting and some unusual plants. Natural springs with a stream lined with bog loving plants. Burton Village Gardens are open on 23rd June with three gardens open, Briarfield, Burton Manor Walled Garden and Trustwood, ranging from more formal to informal gardens with a wide range of plants and wild life habitats.

Hoole Rangers celebrate 25 years On Saturday 12th may, Hoole Rangers celebrated their 25th anniversary at New Scene, Limewood Fields, writes Glyn Roberts. Many of the past and present players came down during the afternoon to play an exhibition match where the current team played a team of ex players from the last 25 years. The game was played in great spirit, with the vets showing they had lost none of their skills, although some had lost some of their fitness (they know who they are!). The game ended in a 3-1 win for the vets and the Maxiflow trophy was presented to team captain Peter McCleary by Chester and Wirral Football League Chairman Mike Williams and League Secretary Paul Graham. Players and their wives, girlfriends and children moved to the clubhouse, where drinks and food were served. Hundreds of photographs showing memorable moments through the 25 years were displayed, which included team photos from the early days right through to current day, and team photos following successful cup and league campaigns. There were also a lot of photos of non-football events such as the Fancy Dress presentation evening in 2005, a casino night in 2006 and a fun day 2012 with charity match vs Chester ladies attended by a number of ex-Chester players. The annual team awards for 2018 were presented, with Richard Howard winning the Committees player of the year, and Ashley English the Players’ Player of the year. There followed a brief history of Hoole Rangers. The team entered the Chester and District league

in 1993, and within four years had achieved promotions twice to reach the premier league. Over the next decade or so, the Hoole Rangers team changed players regularly, but we were always able to bring in quality players and during that time, we won the League cup twice, the Premier league twice, were runners up in the Tom Gherrity, League, and Challenge cups, and regularly finished the league seasons in a top four position. In 2008, we started a reserve team that competed until 2015. Although the last 7-8 have not been very successful in terms of winning trophies, the focus of the club has switched from chasing titles to having a really great bunch of lads who enjoy playing, and have been fantastic to have as members of our club‌.. and the social nights out have been enjoyed by all. The final act of the formal part of the evening was to recognise a really special achievement. Two players have played for Hoole Rangers in every season since 1993, clocking up around 500 games each. They were also the winners of the Players Player of the year and the Opponents Player of the year in our first season. To mark this fantastic achievement, Barry Neale and Mark Roberts were presented with trophies as tokens of the clubs appreciation by Fran Hastings, Chairman of Hoole Rangers for 22 years, and Gary Williams, the team manager for the first 10 years. All in all, a very enjoyable day, I think everyone attending enjoyed their trip into the past, many great memories and a lot of great friends. Love Hoole Loyalty Scheme to be extended to all of CH2 The Love Hoole loyalty scheme - where one loyalty card works in multiple participating stores to collect points and gain rewards - has had a very successful 18 months in Hoole and now has over 2,000 registered card holders! A recent survey of all card holders said that they agreed the community scheme was a good idea (95%) and exactly half (50%) of them are now spending more in Hoole as a result. The scheme has also raised over £700 in donations supported entirely by local cardholders and vendors that in turn sees the money returned to the local area. Charities connected with the scheme now include Claire House, The Hoole Community Centre and The Countess Charity. Chester-based Rob Meakin, Managing Director at Loyalty Pro Ltd who initiated the scheme, said, “Convenience is everything to the customer these days and the beauty of the Love Hoole scheme is that customers only need one loyalty card for lots of different shops. We needed to prove this concept in a community environment whilst using industry-leading technology. We’re delighted with the outcome and positive feedback from all involved so we now plan to roll out the scheme to the whole of the CH2 postcode, not just Hoole. You will see we have a new card in circulation but both old and new will work in all participating

stores. It’s exciting times for us as we widen our reach and launch our app to support the scheme for those that are happy to use a smart phone instead of a physical card.” Meakin continues with, “Giving traders the ability to offer their loyal customers rewards based on their spend by contacting them via email, text or in app messaging is where the true value of the scheme is. Our aim is to give the local trader community the marketing tools that are only normally available to the big supermarkets to help them compete and ensure the area stays vibrant. It’s a great way to get customers through the door and keep the community spirit alive.” The extended roll out into the whole of CH2 is happening now and the app is available to download on Google Play and The App Store, so consumers can start shopping right away! Once they’ve accumulated points, they can get a monetary reward in store or donated to one of the registered local charities. All donated points are currently being funded by Loyalty Pro as another way for them to give back to the community. For more information call Loyalty Pro Ltd on 0800 612 9747 or visit the schemes website: www.lovehoole.com.

Hayley’s health and fitness

I just can't get MOTIVATED! We all know that first session in gym, that first fitness class or that first run especially after a long time being away is always the hardest! So, what can you do to ensure you stop making excuses and start making those positive changes. My first bit of advice would be to set a realistic goal! No use saying I’ll run a marathon in 2 months when you haven’t moved for years, nor is setting a target of 3 stone weight loss when your cupboard is full of cakes and biscuits. Start off with baby steps, so for example, you might start with ‘this week my target is to cut out crisps and cakes’ once this target is achieved add on another small goal. ‘ This week Ill increase my water intake etc’ With weight loss it’s so important that you do BOTH exercise and diet together. You will get smaller just dieting but when you’re left with saggy skin and you’re still out of breath getting up the stairs what’s the point! Exercise has a huge impact to all aspects in day to day life, whether it’s your mental state, reducing your risk of high blood pressure, improving your flexibility the list is endless! So, there is no time like the present to start. Exercise classes on your own can be daunting but find something you’ll enjoy and use this as a tool to meet new people, get stuck in and give it your all. In group exercise using others as a tool to ensure you keep going, if group exercise isn’t for you try doing your own workouts at home or getting a personal trainer. Dieting is the part of getting fit most find the hardest, sticking to healthy foods especially at the weekends can be tricky! I believe it’s not about cutting everything out just to have everything in moderation. Carbohydrates

are always labelled as the baddie of the food groups yet eaten properly can be a good tool. It’s the refined carbs that you have to watch, cakes, crisps, sugary snacks are the bad foods. Eating the healthy carbs such as vegetables, fruits and whole grain cereals etc are a perfect way of getting nutrients in and getting a balanced diet. Avoid diets that are all protein, or all liquids they can have adverse effects on your body. A diet however high in protein is what I advise all my clients to eat. A typical day would be eggs and 1 small slice of granary bread for breakfast, handful of almonds for a snack, dinner chicken salad, followed by a Greek yoghurt, afternoon snack a small piece of fruit, evening meal pork/ chicken stir fry. Get yourself a food and exercise diary note all the activity you do throughout the day and use this as a guide of where you can improve. Write down your monthly targets and keep track of good and bad days. Seeing what you actually consume is a great way of monitoring your calorie intake. Can you sparkle for the hospice? Chester residents are being encouraged to sign up as a volunteer for the Chester Sparkle Night Walk which will take place on Friday 15th June, in aid of Hospice of the Good Shepherd. More than 75 volunteers are needed to marshall the route and help with setting up the event to ensure that all participants can take part safely. Justin Caroe, hospice community fundraiser, said: “Our Chester Sparkle Night Walk is reliant on an army of enthusiastic volunteers to be a success. Their presence is paramount to keeping it running smoothly and safely.” The Chester Sparkle Night Walk starts at Grosvenor Park and will see hundreds of walkers ‘sparkle’ under the stars. The 5km circular route through Chester City Centre passes iconic buildings and locations along the way including: Chester Cathedral, Eastgate Clock,Chester Racecourse and finishes within the Amphitheatre. Justin added: “The hospice relies on donations for the majority of its income, so events like the Chester Sparkle Night Walk are a vital way of raising funds. There is always a fantastic atmosphere, so I’d encourage everyone to come along and be part of an incredible event that helps support the only adult hospice in Chester.” The Hospice of the Good Shepherd doesn’t make a charge to patients for using the services but it does cost £11,000 per day for the hospice to provide the necessary care and support. Volunteers will need to be on-site from 7pm until around 1am depending on the role and refreshments will be provided. If you would like to volunteer your help please email fundraising@ hospicegs.com or call 01244 851 811. Hoole History Corner Monty Mercer, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, looks at the petition to The

T

he discovery and content of a ‘Memorial’ (Petition) submitted in 1889 for a footbridge entrance to Chester General Station from Hoole.

In late 2014, two members of The Hoole History & Heritage Society, whilst researching, at the National Archives in Kew, the origins of the Chester Union Workhouse in Hoole, stumbled upon an unrelated, but unique and fascinating document that had led to a major development in Hoole in the late nineteenth century. The document is a Memorial (Petition), urgently requesting that the Joint Railway Companies construct a pedestrian entrance to the General Railway Station from the Hoole side of the main railway bridge (now known as the Hoole Bridge). The main reason for this was to allow Hoole residents, many of them commuters, to have access to the station without the danger and inconvenience of having to cross the main road bridge. Of the 74 householders in Hoole Road at the time, only 4 of them made their living in Chester. From 1840 onwards, the provision and use of railways,

and the population of Hoole and surrounding districts had both increased. The Chester / Crewe line opened in 1840, the General Station in 1848, and the Hoole Bridge in 1849. The population of the Civil Parish of Hoole had grown from 294 in 1840 to 3062 in 1881, just a few years before the Memorial’s composition in 1889. The population figures for 1891 are illusive, but the census figures for the population within the Hoole Urban District Council’s boundaries (the same as the former Civil Parish’s) of 1901 are given as 5341. An approximation of the growth of population from 1881 to 1901, at a steady rate, gives a population of close to 3900 in 1889. The details of reasons given in the Memorial for the urgency to construct an entrance from Hoole to the General Station are expressed in very robust prose. A short extract follows: “Several of your memorialists are merchants, commercial travellers and others whose avocations necessitate daily or frequent railway travelling. “At present, to get to the general railway station from this northern side, foot passengers must go past the station up the whole ascent of a long and disagreeable bridge, thence down a flight of steps which are only used on sufferance and are very uninviting, especially at night, and thence about 200 yards along a road on the south side of the station, which is frequently in almost unusable condition, and has no flagged, or other, footpath, whilst vehicular traffic has, in addition, to descend the bridge, make a sharp and dangerous turn, and return on a different level to nearly the starting point, thus accomplishing a wholly unnecessary distance of about quarter of a mile; moreover, the bridge, which has to be thus traversed for its whole length by buses and vehicles, and for the greater portion of its length by foot passengers, is subject to very heavy goods and cattle traffic. There is no protection for pedestrians against cattle being driven on it; it is very indifferently lighted at night, and it is subject to high shrieking, whistling, smoke and nuisances incident to a number of railways concentrating under it, as they run into the station.” The more informal sheets of the 197 signatories were then glued together and attached to the formal statement. The whole document is approximately 40cm wide and 2m long. It is heavily stained with what looks like soot where it has been folded and is dog-eared in places. It is easy to imagine that it had lain in a Railway Companies’ file for over one hundred and twenty years.

The ‘Memorial’ (Petition) of 1889

The Joint Railway Companies for a footbridge from the station to Hoole

What is significant about the signatories, is that they are the prominent, successful, affluent inhabitants of the township of Hoole and outlying districts. Examples are given in the files, but notable are: Charles Brown, six times Mayor of Chester, and one of the founders of Browns of Chester; Lieutenant Colonel JH Hamersley, Chief Constable of Cheshire; the Rev. Frederik Anderson, the first and longserving vicar of All Saints’ Church, Hoole; Earl Kilmorey; Claud Hamilton Vivian, landowner, of Hoole House; and Eliza J Ewing of Golden Grove (now the Dene Hotel). There are many professions represented, indicating how varied was the population of the area. There are architects, surveyors, clerks in holy orders, builders, commercial travellers, and even the manager of the gasworks. Many of these people would have relied very heavily on travelling by rail to pursue their profession or line of business. The document was submitted to the Joint Railway Companies in 1889, with the support of the Hoole Local Board; a sub-committee of the Board was set up to work with the Joint Railway Companies. In July 1891, Chester submitted a bid to hold The Royal Agricultural Show in Chester in 1893. By February 1892 the Royal Agricultural Society of England had decided to award Chester that honour, and further, the show was to be held on the Hoole site (100 acres covering what is now the Coronation Playing Fields, Alexandra Park and many of the surrounding streets). The Show was the biggest event ever to have been held in Hoole, and possibly gave impetus to a decision to construct a footbridge from the Hoole side of the Hoole Bridge to the platforms of the station. An article in the “Cheshire

Observer” of May 1893, a month before the Show was due to open, says: “In Hoole the various improvements are in an advanced stage, and the Local Board must be pleased to find their district benefiting from the selection of Hoole as a site. The County Council has all but completed the widening of Hoole Road, and for this purpose the Earl of Kilmorey has given a large slice of land. Lightfoot Street also now needs only the setting of the road material: and steady progress is being made with the footbridge over the railway. Though not a very elegant structure, it will no doubt, be found of great advantage by those visitors who simply come to have a hurried glances at the show, and then take their departure.” During the week of the Show (17-23 June 1893), a total of 115,000 visitors came to Hoole, many of them by train, and they would have undoubtedly chosen to use the new footbridge. The footbridge, with its own ticket office at the Hoole Road entrance, is remembered by many Hoole residents, as it was closed only in the late 1960s after falling into disrepair. Its bricked-up entrance and iron gateway arch can still be seen today, acting as a support for Hoole Bridge Building Supplies’ advertisement boards. (Except when blown away by Storm “Doris” in February 2016). In addition to the remains of the structure itself, we now also have the Memorial, a unique document with its fascinating collection of signatures, which were the beginning of the process of having the footbridge built, and a source of further research by anyone interested in the period.

The next meeting of HH&HS is on Thursday 21st of June and the topic is ‘Where, when, and what was Hoole’. The speaker will be Linda Webb.

ROYAL WEDDING BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER I don’t know about you but I must admit I do love a Royal Wedding. Many of us will have celebrated with friends by watching the wedding on TV and drinking sparkling white wine and eating cake, toasting the happy couple on their special day. I am a fan of the Royal Family and in particular the Queen – at the moment I am hooked on watching “The Crown” on Netflix it’s my favourite programme! I love the fact that the Queen get to have two birthdays each year - one on the anniversary of the day she was born, and one an “official” birthday in June. It’s a tradition that was started by George II in 1748 and is owes its origins to the ageless problem of the British weather. George was born in November, and felt the weather would be too cold at that time of year for his annual birthday parade. It is a tradition that has continued to this day. All British sovereigns are given the option of having an “official” birthday, and because the Queen’s real birthday is on April 21, she has stuck with the tradition of celebrating in June. The Sovereign’s birthday is officially celebrated by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour (Queen’s Birthday Parade). This impressive display of pageantry takes place on a Saturday 9th June by her personal troops, the Household Division, on Horse Guards Parade, with Her Majesty the Queen herself attending and taking the salute.

Over the past few years Her Majesty the Queen has talked about her faith in Jesus Christ especially within her Christmas Day message. In2015 she said “the Gospel of John contains a verse of great hope, often read at Christmas carol services: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”, later she made reference to Joseph and Mary and the circumstances of Jesus’s birth - in a stable; stating “It’s no surprise that such a human story still captures our imagination and continues to inspire all of us who are Christians, the world over.” For me as I reflect on this I believe that Her Majesty the Queen is very clear about her faith and whilst she is very affirming of other faiths she’s quite clear that she is a Christian! “The Queen has served us all her adult life, with amazing consistency of character, concern for others and a clear dependence on Christ. The more I’ve read what she’s written and talked to people who know her, the clearer that is. To have a monarch who talks openly about Jesus in a very relaxed and natural way, I find that a huge encouragement and hope that Christians across the country will take a leaf out of The Queen’s book and learn to talk about Jesus in a natural way with friends, relatives and colleagues, so people can discover more about what it means to be a follower of Jesus.” Queen Elizabeth II reflects on Jesus’ central role in her life in a

Within the book she reflects on trusting God in the dark and tough times in life, the importance of forgiveness, the significance of prayer and the Bible being more valuable than the Crown Jewels!!
