Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But

it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton

areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

END OF AN ERA THE impending closure of the Co-op on Walker Street has been a cause for sadness, so it’s an appropriate time to look back on the history of the street and the Co-op’s 110-year tenure there. Also, this month we’ve got news from the Hoole SOUP Project, health and fitness, financial column, gardening with Janet Heath and Thought for the Month with the Rev Andy Glover.

March date for SOUP Project THE next SOUP Project at Hoole Community Centre takes place on Thursday 22nd March. The SOUP project started in Detroit in 2010 as a means of getting people together to support small business ideas over a bowl of soup. A social enterprise combining crowd funding and collective positivity, four people are invited to present their ideas (no technology is allowed) for four minutes each, the audience can ask only four questions and then over a bowl of soup can vote for their favourite pitch. The winner takes home the pot of donations taken at the door, which is suggested at £5. For some small businesses it is not about the money but the opportunity to network and gain some moral support for what they are trying to achieve. The Chester Soup will take place at Hobsons Cafe in Hoole Community Centre Westminster Road CH2 3AU from 6.30 - 8.30 on the following dates. Future events take place on 17th May, 12th July, 20th September and 15th November. Please come along bring your friends, have some fun over a bowl of soup. If you have a small business idea that will help the residents of Chester and would like to pitch it in a safe and welcoming venue please email Rachel on Rachelmacd15@yahoo. co.uk pitches are not themed and will be included on a first come first served basis.

Hoole History Corner

Ralph Earlam, Chairman of Hoole History and Heritage Society, explores the early hi TITHE maps in the Cheshire Record Office show that a Thomas Walker (1782-1857) owned properties in Newton Township in the area we now know as Flookersbrook. These included a tan-yard, a brewery, a brick bank and at least 6 houses and cottages. On the south side of Hoole Road in Hoole township, he owned plots of land and a number of dwellings including Ashtree House. His father was a brewer and liquor merchant but Thomas became a tanner and he married Katherine Lightfoot. Their son, also Thomas (18211871), succeeded him and following his death the land south of Hoole Road was acquired by Brabner & Court, Solicitors from Liverpool, who developed the properties we see today between Faulkner Street and Lightfoot Street. Walker Street was built in 1881 from an opening in Lightfoot Street (see our article next month). Initially it only went as far as Pickering Street, the dog-leg, its link to Faulkner Street, known as New Walker Street not being built until 1887 when All Saints School was erected. (We would welcome any photographs All Saints School because very few exist!) It was necessary

to demolish houses in Faulkner Street by the Bromfield Arms to create the opening for Walker Street. Corner Shops Unlike Faulkner Street and Charles Street where houses were turned into shops, Walker Street had shops on every corner. The range of shops provided all that one could need; grocers, bakers, butchers, newsagent, smallwares, boots and shoes as well as a cycle dealer. They changed hands and their type of trade frequently. Old “Hooligans” fondly recall Lowndes’ fish & chip shop being there. A special feature of these corner shops was the entrance actually built into the corner . The photographs show where the current owners at the junction with Phillip St still have their front door actually on the corner while others have shifted the doors round the corner. End Of An Era? Hoole residents probably already know that the Co-op in Walker St will be closing in July (along with the Faulkner St shop) in order to concentrate

WALKER STREET

ly history of this street which “dog-legs” from Faulkner St to Lightfoot St business on The Elms site on Hoole Rd. This will bring to an end 110 years of the Co-op on its Walker St site. The arrival of the Co-op in 1906 which included a grocer, a butcher and a shoe and clothing store on the upper floor, was a major event . Many will remember getting their divi and buying milk tokens there as well as the cash pulley system. The car park was called Hoole Bank and bonfires were lit there on November 5th but , miraculously, the Co-op wasn’t burnt down. The other major building was the Tin Chapel erected in 1894 following a dispute between Nonconformists, who had run a successful Sunday School at Westminster Road Schools, and the Church of England to whom the Duke of Westminster eventually gave the Schools. The Chapel was originally a Church of England Mission Hall from Edge Hill in Liverpool. When the Congregational Church moved to its present site on Hoole Road, it became Braids furniture store which many readers will remember. In the 1950s football fans could catch a double decker bus from behind the “Brom” to take them to Chester Stadium in Sealand Road (does anyone remember the Chelsea Cup Tie?). I doubt the bus would get through today.

I TREATED myself to a long weekend when my parents came to visit a few weeks ago and before they headed back south, we made time to drop into Cafe.com for a cooked breakfast. There were a few regulars mopping up sloppy yolks while others nursed Monday morning hangovers. Jack Johnson slurred over some chilled out beats and I was amazed at how relaxed everything was in comparison to my usual Monday morning routine. There was a young woman with her daughter sat to one side of us. The daughter was feeding tiny pieces of her toast to a Barbie doll. “Don’t keep feeding Barbie.” Her mum said. “You don’t want her getting fat!” Whether or not the intention was to stop her daughter playing with her food or not, it got me thinking about the possible body image that she had just projected onto her child. I mentioned it to my sister that afternoon and she told me that Barbie has come a long way since I last paid any attention to her dolls. It was actually my eagle-eyed Action Man that was probably the last to actually see Barbie in all her glory. He’d hung up his plastic automatic rifle and headed into a long term relationship with my sister’s Sindy doll back in the early 90s. Sindy had the comfortable house, the plastic dog, the perfect clothes and the beach buggy complete with surfboard. She had the kitchen and the sofas and the dressing table but she wasn’t flawless. Her head was twice the size of Action Man’s and she had a slightly vacant look as she went about her daily routine of ballet and horse riding. She was somewhat troubled and appeared to have graduated from a special school for dolls with slight learning difficulties so the lure of American chic Barbie was a little too tempting. Action Man eventually ditched Sindy for the carefree world that only Barbie oozed from her tips of her tiny disproportionate feet the enormous mass of plastic nippleless breasts. “She’s changed. She comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes now. She even comes with replete with tattoos...” She said. Why this infuriated me, I do not know. Assuming that we have now finally and firmly driven a stake through the heart of common decency, I wondered what else was out there that was just a little too real for our kids.

30 Tel 01244350398

How about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Action Man? Now with scars that you can’t see! Does he come with a “FRAGILE” warning and a strap line that reads “This all plastic, combat-seasoned G.I. Joe comes complete with a kung fu grip, debilitating flashbacks, repetitive night terrors and a replica Bowie knife?” Will our kids have hours of fun learning valuable problem-solving skills as they help a real war hero reintegrate back into normal life and navigate an indifferent benefits system while in search of treatment for his substance abuse, occupational instability and generalised anxiety? I can’t bear the thought of my perfect Notting Hoole shops stocking that likes of Mr. Heavily Pierced-Potato Head or Nicotine Patch Kids. I look at my sister’s kids and see how tuned in they are. They are like sponges. They pick up on everything. I want them to remain as kids for as long as possible. I don’t want them playing with realistic toys. I want them to have castles and knights and dragons and Paw Patrol and In The Night Garden for as long as possible. My eldest godson now has a Facebook account. As I just wrote that, I’m instantly reminded that my last status is littered with language that I’d never use in front of him. I’m now editing it between rounding off this column. But he’s already read it. He even liked it. He’s exposed to worse, I’m sure. But I don’t want that for him. “You’re not being realistic” my sister says. She’s right. I’m not living in a dream world. I just want things to be like in the movies. I want the backdrops and soundtracks to be perfect. I want my friends and family to wander into my world and be swept away by it. I want my neighbour to take in his recycling boxes that have been blowing about the street for the last month. I want all of my meals to be served in a room that replicates the Hollows. I want the girl in Cafe.com to feed her Barbie as much toast as she likes without ever having to think about weight gain or body image. I don’t want the truth. I want something aesthetically pleasing. I want my senses stimulated. I want to cling on to Hoole and embrace all that it has to offer for as long as possible because it’s rare. It is an oasis and I’m fully aware just how lucky I am to have found myself now living in amongst the red bricks and confusing one way systems. It’ll take a lot more than Barbie to lure me away from it, regardless of how small her feet or large her assets.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

EARLY SPRING MAGIC

MARCH is when spring comes to life with unstoppable new growth, usually offset with gales and frost to damage new shoots but there is always colour or scent to enjoy. March is the best month for daffodils with some many varieties to choose from. I enjoy visiting Dunham Massey winter gardens to see many varieties en masse and took this photo of Narcissus Jenny with larger yellow daffodils behind them. Daffodils are good under deciduous trees or in full sun. Another more unusual bulb out in March is the Erythronium or Dog’s Tooth Violet. More fussy than daffodils, they like light shade and the moisture retentive yet well drained soil that some of find so difficult to achieve! However, if planted around deciduous shrubs and left alone they will give lovely leaves with elegant flowers. Erythronium tuolomense has buttercup yellow flowers or try varieties like Pagoda with pale yel-low blooms or White Beauty with white flowers. Before many of the perennials pop up, shrubs start to get going. Ribes or flowering currant usually is in flower before Forsythia and is very tough. It survives in cold windswept gardens but does best in a more sheltered spot in sun or part shade. The combination of Ribes and Pieris looks stunning for early spring colour. Pieris prefers a slightly acid to neutral soil with some shelter but the combination of white flowers and red or yellow new growth brings life to the garden. If it is scent that you look for try Daphnes. Daphne odora is a rounded evergreen shrub up to 1m high with pink starry highly scented flowers in early spring. Grow somewhere sheltered and where you can smell the fragrance. Another good one is Daphne bholua which is taller, semi evergreen but with the same winter fragrance. Well drained soil that does not dry out is best. Finish tidying the dead growth from last year to allow perennials and grasses to get going. Plant seeds of tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers and keep in a warm place such as windowsill or heated propagator. Ensure that you have completed the pruning of roses and cut back winter flowering heathers when they have finished flowering.

Hayley’s health and fitness

HEALTH AND FITNESS BLOG

HOW COMMITTED ARE YOU? How committed are you? Do you really push yourself or is your mind set holding you back? Take this little quiz to find out if your super fit or how you could do more! 1. On average how many nights a week are you active? I’m active In my job I dont need to exercise (0 points) 1-2 nights (1 point) 2-3 nights (2 points) 4 + nights (3 points) 2. Food preparation and eating I skip meals and eat an evening meal (0 points) I eat as and when I can (1 point) I eat healthily in the day and reward myself at nights (2 points) I eat healthily all week and reward myself with 1 cheat meal per week (3 points) 3. At classes I would say ... I only attend when I have a friend to come with me (0 points) I push myself only when I have the energy (1 point) I am getting better as I get fitter (2 points) I push myself to the max (3 points) 4. The following reasons are a good enough reason to not attend my fitness group I have had a stressful day (0 points) The weather is awful its cold and miserable (0 points) Husband was running late I’ll be late (0 points) I have a cold (0 point) I have an injury (1 point) Family emergency (2 points) 5. My fitness attire... I will spend £5-10 on fitness gear (0 points) I’m not wasting money on decent trainers they all work the same (0 points) I will buy the latest trend if they are worth having (2 points) I will wait for recommendations and research what I need before I buy (3 points) 6. If I miss a class I will... Miss the rest of the week and start fresh next week (0 points) It wasn’t my fault my friend couldnt come I’ll start again when she does (0 points) I’ll make up for it by doing 20 mins at home (1 point) I’ll do what I can at home and attend other classes this week to make up for lost times (2 points) I never miss a class its my routine now (3 points)

If you scored 0-6 points Skipping meals and classes at any given opportunity is a no brainer that you wont get to where you want to be fast. Your mind set really needs to change, if the weather bad and you dont feel like it, its about getting that get up and go no matter what you state of mind. Use family and friends to push you and only use one weekend day as a treat day. Skipping meals especially breakfast causes low blood sugars, you crave rubbish foods in the day and you end up eating more throughout. Plan meals and make large batches on Sundays to freeze and store for the week. Your activity needs to be upped to at least the recommended daily time, with the right footwear and clothing. Being busy in your job doesnt mean you’re giving your heart a work out and exercising helps elminate stress, no excuses! Get on BOOGIE BOUNCE with me to really obviate stress factors. If you scored 6-12 points It sounds like your half way there but little things can sway your motivation. You like to buy the gear to show willing but too often a bad day or a small factor can throw off your routine. Set a target of where you want to be and set realistic goals of how to achieve this. Push yourself that bit further to get to obtain good results and ensure you have a willing and encouraging work out buddy to keep you on track. Personal training would be of you to you as this would give you the extra push you require and break bad haibts. You scored 12 + points WOW you’re a super committed and a fitness lover, you strive to stick to commit and you keep on track no matter what the weather or circumstances. You only buy decent equipment and clothing as its essential to look after yourself with support and good footwear. You dont rely on a friend to motivate you as you will attend your training based on your own motivation and determination. Food is there for fuel only and week days are for looking after your body inside and out, treats are minimal but your hardwork pays off as overall health and your appearance is fit and flourishing! To push yourself further you would need to try new things and shock your body, eg if your a zumba lover, bring weights and add that extra push to your body. Or if your a runner, try using inclines to max yoruself out! One off personal training sessions to show you where you could improve would also be of use. TEMPTATION BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

GIVEN anything up for Lent this year? A recent poll stated that over half of all Brits who give something up for Lent don’t last the 40 days and give in to temptation! Most of March this year will be in the season of Lent. So what is Lent? It is the forty-day period before Easter, it began on Ash Andy Glover has lived in Wednesday (10th Feb) and includes Palm Sunday (20th March) and ends on Hoole with his wife Sue for Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday (27th March. The forty days 27 years. Andy began at are called Lent because that is the Old English word for spring. Sundays are Hoole Baptist Church, on excluded from the adding up of forty days because Sunday is the day on Westminster Road, as Youth which Christ rose from the dead, so on Sundays we remember and celebrate Pastor, before becoming the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why 40 days? 40 is a significant number in the Bible: in Genesis, the flood, which destroyed the earth, was brought about by 40 the Pastor and now Team Leader. days and nights of rain; The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God; and Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry. Most Christians regard Jesus’ time in the wilderness as the key event for the duration of Lent. Today, Lent is marked by opportunities of prayer and reflection and is a time of preparation before we celebrate Easter. In many ways Easter is the most important Christian festival in the year, although we tend to give more time and focus on Christmas. Throughout Lent we can seek to recognize and respond afresh to God’s presence in our lives and in our world and to consider the offer through the death and resurrection of Jesus to place our needs, our fears, our failures, our hopes, and our very lives in God’s hands, again. Lent, is traditional a time to give up (or ‘fast from’) something(s) that we do a lot of and that we find pleasure in. This giving up or fasting is done: as a discipline for learning self-control, to free our minds from the chase after material things, to tell ourselves ‘no’ and make it stick; The most common thing is to fast from food for Lent. For those from a Catholic tradition this means giving up meats on Fridays for the season, or to fast entirely for one day a week. You might try giving up pizza or fast food or alcohol or snacks (I wonder if you can do it for the whole 40 days...). Food fasts are not just the most traditional way of marking Lent, they’re also the simplest to do, since we all eat routinely every day. If giving up food isn’t much of a task for you, choose something else that you have to make a serious effort to give up. What about giving up watching Television or maybe not watching your favourite soap for the 40 days, maybe you should decide to stop gambling, or impulse shopping, how about not going on Facebook or the internet, or maybe stop living off your credit card and only spend cash during this month. In fact to give up or stop anything which most relates to behaviours and habits that are especially important for you can be a really good way to mark this season of Lent and to see how disciplined you can be. However, Lent is not all about giving things up. It’s also about adding good things to our lives or to others’ lives -- the kind of good things that follow on what Jesus asks of us, especially that which relates to what we’re giving up. Try these: Reconcile yourself to someone you don’t like, or even hate or did something bad to, or just intentionally stayed away from. Do acts of kindness for people, just because the opportunity’s there; Try and read a chapter a day from a gospel from the New Testament, try reading Luke’s gospel, here you can read about the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. Maybe even go along to a church service during March or consider going along on Easter Sunday to celebrate the end of Lent and considering the most amazing claim ever made – that Jesus actually did rise from the dead!! 40 Tel 01244350398
