WELL.... Where do we start with the furore over The Elms supermarket plans? Despite a big campaign, the council felt unable to refuse planning permission - so it looks inevitable that the GP surgery will become a Tesco store in the near future. Celebrate former school’s 150th 10 Tel 01244 350398
www.hooleroundabout.com
This year sees the 150th anniversary of Westminster Road School, a building which still echoes to the sounds of learning in its role as the Hoole Community Centre. Tap dancing and ballet classes, art lessons and yoga may have replaced chalk and talk and while students now listen for the beat or practise calligraphy instead of scraping their letters on slate, the building still remains at the heart of our Hoole community. Many residents of Hoole will have fond (or otherwise!) memories of attending the school. To mark this momentous anniversary, local community groups are planning a series of events to
celebrate the many and varied people and events in the long history of the school, originally designed by famous Chester architect, John Douglas whose typical buildings are so much a feature of Chester city centre. Hoole History and Heritage Society, the Hoole Festivals Committee (‘Notting Hoole’ group) and the trustees and staff of the Hoole Community Development Trust are appealing for any personal memories, memorabilia ( photos, medals, reports, letters etc) so they can build up an archive to create as full a
picture as possible of history of the school and its people. Please come along to the Community Centre on Saturday 21st March from 10am to 12noon when the Hoole History Society will be mounting an Information Gathering Morning to display the material we already have and hopefully find much more. There will also be talks on the history of the school at 10.15am and 11.15am. You could check if you have an ancestor whose name is on the 1899 - 1914 Admissions Register! For further details or if you are interested in taking part in the research please contact the Secretary at hoolehistory@ hotmail.co.uk or 01244 346151.

School tackles parking problem Newton Primary school has been working with the local council to tackle parking problems as the children are being dropped off and picked up. They have launched a new road safety initiative in which parents, drivers and school visitors make a pledge to reduce the occurrences of congestion outside school and raise awareness of parking safely on surrounding local roads. The charter is constructed by the school working in partnership with parents and the local community, setting out safety guidelines alongside the needs of the school. Newton Councillors Tom Parry and Adrian Walmsley have helped fund this project from their Members Budgets. Cllr Walmsley said: “Local

residents tell us that stopping parking taking place on pavements and grass verges is a top priority. “We hope by working in partnership with Newton Primary School staff, children and parents, that people will drive and park with more consideration, making our communities safer and really support the message that Newton pavements are for people.” Head Teacher Mark Griffiths said: “At Newton Primary School we welcome the introduction of a Parking Charter. “Our Junior Safety officers in Year 6, Leila and Emelia, give advice to children in school assemblies about how to be safe in the community and our ‘Bike it Crew’ are a group of children who give the same

message. They promote safe cycling, riding on a scooter or walking to school, whenever possible. “However we recognise that some parents do need to use a car for school journeys and hopefully this initiative will reinforce the need to drive and park considerately and safely outside school which will serve to benefit all members of the community.” PCSO Mel Johnson, Councillor Tom Parry, Jacqui Kelly (Teaching Assistant), Mark Griffiths (Head Teacher), Leila Hughes and Emilia Harvey (Newton Junior Road Safety Officers), Gill Shaw (CWaC Road Safety Officer), Councillor Adrian Walmsley, Michelle Markert (CWaC Locality Officer)

Traders fight back with shop local plea
Dismay as supermarket plans given the go-ahead LOCAL businesses have pledged to fight back after council planners controversially granted permission for a supermarket at the site of The Elms GP surgery. A ‘shop local’ campaign is already underway on social media in a bid to combat the threat of the proposed store. At the meeting in February Cheshire West and Chester councillors approved the plans for changing the use of the surgery on Hoole Road which is likely to lead to a new Tesco store opening in the near future. Despite most councillors expressing sympathy for the objections, their view was that there are no sound planning reasons to turn down the application. Essentially, this means they were worried that if permission was refused at CWAC, then the developers (probably Tesco) could appeal and it would subsequently be given approval – at great cost to the council. There was anger that an independent report commissioned by the council came to the conclusion that a Tesco convenience store would have limited impact on the shops in Faulkner Street and Charles Street. But Cllr Bob Thompson said that the
22 Tel 01244 350398
independent shops in Hoole would inevitably suffer due to the new store taking away the passing trade. His view was that motorists would be disinclined to make the turn into Faulkner Street and instead spend their money at the Hoole Road store. He added that the Hoole shops have already taken a hit with the arrival of Aldi and Waitrose and that they are ‘wounded’. Cllr Alex Black said that people are vehemently against this and called upon planners to take the difficult decision to refuse the plans and instead support the people and shops of Hoole. But the planning committee ignored those calls and voted for approval. Social media has been awash with reaction to the decision, with many branding it a ‘disgrace’. Ironically, the move to put a Tesco store in Hoole comes just days after the embattled retail giant announced that it was closing its Tesco Home store at the Greyhound Park as part of a range of cutbacks across the UK. A campaign on social media has led to calls for a buy local campaign, hopefully which we will be able to report more on very soon.

Let’s play! Hoole Primary’s PTA raises funds that are used to help enrich the pupils’ play and learning environment. The school has a massive amount of outdoor space and, coupled with other recent enrichment projects in the school’s forest area and allotment, this £5,000 donation in two new areas of play equipment takes this unique asset to another level of fun and activity for the children. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress Cllrs Bob and Sandra Rudd came to the school to open the new playground.

Look up....
and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. Posts prove popular A triangle of land on Chester’s Hoole Road has received financial support from local councillors Alex Black and Bob Thompson from their member budgets. The two Hoole councillors funded replacement wooden posts for the low chain link fence. The site is opposite the petrol station. The land is owned by the Flookersbrook Trust and is maintained by the people living there. Cllr Black said: “People may think that this small area of land is owned by the council, when in fact the owners are the Flookersbrook Trust. “This greenery and indeed the two plantations of trees nearby are enjoyed by everyone, so therefore it seemed very reasonable that funding for the new posts came from our member budgets.” Added Cllr Thompson: “The presentation
of Hoole Road is important to the Hoole community and also the commercial interests of Chester. “The posts needed replacing and the new ones make a difference to the triangle of land.” Cllr Bob Thompson, Peter Bradshaw, Treasurer of the Flookersbrook Trust and Cllr Alex Black.

Can yOu hELP a ChiLD TO LEarn? Passion for Learning work with over 20 Primary schools in Chester and Ellesmere Port, placing trained community volunteers with children who are in greatest need of support. Our volunteers work with children during the school day, attending twice a week for 1.5-2 hours. From February, we are also running after-school Enrichment Clubs at schools in Lache, Ellesmere Port and Blacon. Volunteers are needed to support once a week at those Clubs from 3.15-4.30pm. We establish strong relationships with the children helping them enjoy books; play games; make crafts and
undertake projects. Working one to one and in small groups, our volunteers offer children a wide range of activities designed to be great fun whilst enriching their learning. Many children have challenges that can impede their learning as well as their social and emotional well-being. This can lead to them not making the expected levels of progress at school. Problems with learning, reading and writing affect the children’s confidence and enthusiasm, impacting on their aspirations and their ability to fulfil their potential. By building children’s confidence through practice in a safe and supportive
environment, their reading and comprehension skills can grow. The children gain problem solving skills, social skills and build their knowledge of the world through experiences which would not otherwise be available to them. The children we work with are those whose entire learning journey can be enhanced by providing the play and experiences that many children can take for granted. FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Gone are the days of searching all around Hoole and Chester to find a solitary jar of Fairtrade coffee, the range has grown and how! 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of the FAIRTRADE Mark. In 1994, the FAIRTRADE Mark appeared on just three products: Green & Black’s Maya Gold chocolate, Cafedirect medium roast coffee, and Clipper tea. Today, the FAIRTRADE Mark is the most widely-known ethical label in the world and UK shoppers can now choose from over 4,500 Fairtrade products including tea, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, bananas, sugar, cotton, gold jewellery, cut flowers, wine and cosmetics. Fairtrade benefits 1.4m farmers and workers in more than 70 developing countries, by ensuring they receive a fair, stable price for their produce, decent working conditions, and a Fairtrade Premium that can be invested in projects that will benefit their community, such as schools, hospitals, clean drinking water or climate adaptation programmes. In 2013 alone, UK shoppers bought an estimated £1.78bn of Fairtrade products, which resulted in over £26m of Fairtrade Premiums being paid to producers.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 26 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
This year’s “Fairtrade Fortnight” takes place from February 23 to March 8; a 2 week period held every year helps spread the word about Fairtrade and the benefits it brings to farmers and workers in developing countries. Buying Fairtrade products is a commitment everyone can make to challenge unfair international trading rules. 77% of all shoppers now recognise the FAIRTRADE mark and with the increased awareness of issues surrounding trade, aid and debt 2015 is an ideal opportunity to find out what Fairtrade means to the 5 million people – farmers, workers and their families – who benefit from Fairtrade. This is why Fairtrade Fortnight 2015 is celebrating all that has been achieved in these 20 years as well as recognizing now there is still a long way to go to make all trade fair – just 1.2% of cocoa and less than 10% of tea globally is traded on Fairtrade terms. STOP THE SUGAR RUSH is one of the campaigns in 2015 that you can support. Choosing Fairtrade sugar has never been more important for many thousands of sugar cane producers, their families and communities in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Pacific islands. Hundreds of thousands of sugar cane smallholders, workers and their communities in developing countries have long made a living from selling to the UK and European Union (EU). But these livelihoods are under threat – sugar cane farmers and their communities urgently need your support. The gap between EU production of beet sugar – grown from a root crop – and EU consumption has traditionally provided a market opportunity for sugar cane smallholders in some African, Caribbean and Pacific countries and Least Developed Countries (LDC). Finally did you know that Chester is a Fairtrade City; in fact back in January 2002 Chester City Council in partnership with Cheshire Development Education Centre attained the status of Britain’s First Fair Trade City. So we the residents of Hoole and Chester have no excuse, so make sure you: • Buy fairly traded products as part of your shopping. If you cannot find a fairly traded product that you want ASK! Shops may be unaware of the demand for these items. • Buy Fairtrade coffee, tea, sugar and locally produced milk for meetings that you organise or attend. • Choose a fairly traded craft item, for the next gift that you buy. • Get your favourite cafè or your workplace to switch to fairly traded refreshments. 34 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com
